Tamari Bar has been one of our favorite spots in Seattle! The atmosphere is lively but comfortable, the service is always warm and welcoming, and their creative menu, especially the omakase-style sashimi and wide variety of sake. It keeps things exciting. On our first visit, we had an absolutely incredible experience that set the bar sky-high. The highlight of that night was their "Best Bite": rich, tender wagyu beef paired with luscious, delicate uni. It was perfection! Balanced, decadent, and easily one of the best things we've ever tasted. That first visit is what brought us back! Unfortunately, our recent visit was a completely different experience. We ordered the "Best Bite" again expecting the same wow factor, but it fell flat. The uni looked like it had been cut into quarters... tiny, mushy, and with very little presence on the bite. The wagyu itself didn't have the same melt-in-your-mouth quality we remembered. It honestly felt like the "best bite" had been downgraded to the "somewhat ok bite." You can see the difference between the two pictures although not the best quality photo since it was taken in the evening with no flash . The first from our initial visit and the second from our latest. The portion and quality of the uni are night and day. Everything else on the menu was solid, and the atmosphere/service remain excellent, but after this second experience, we'll probably skip the "Best Bite" going forward. Hoping this was just an off night, because Tamari Bar has so much potential when they're at their best! That said ...the surprise star of the show this time? The lemon furikake Brussels sprouts. After having a great meal at Rondo, we decided to head over to Tamari Bar a couple of weeks later to try out Rondo's sister restaurant. We visited during Happy Hour, which is quite generously timed, going from 4:30-6PM, then again from 9PM to close. Each dish on their Happy Hour menu is a dollar or two cheaper than normal prices and I believe the portion sizes are the same as normal. We got there about 5 minutes before opening and there was already a small line forming in front. Regular occurrence for Sunday dinner, or is it because of Sakuracon? At any rate, the restaurant kept filling up slowly and by the time we left at 5:30, it was super crowded. Service is utilitarian but quick. The servers supply a menu with the daily specials, while the main menu is accessed via QR code. The restaurant doesn't have wifi, which kind of irks me. In my opinion, if a place requires internet to access the menu, then they should supply wifi. Osaka Cheese Chicken Katsu Curry ($17) - It seems like a much smaller portion as compared to Rondo due to the plating. Firstly a bed of rice, medium grain but cooked perfectly, with shredded nori to add color and a slight umami. This is then topped with a fried chicken katsu. The meat is tender, in some portions almost similar to fish in flakiness and tenderness. It's breaded with breadcrumbs rather than panko and is crisp in the naked areas not covered by curry. For some reason, they either don't season or very very lightly season both the chicken and the breading, resulting in a flavorless combination, with the seasoning only coming from the sauces and toppings above. Firstly shredded mozzarella cheese, melted and stretchy. Then there's a ladleful of curry on top to melt the cheese. It's exceptionally flavorful with curry spices, filled with minced/ground beef that's robustly beefy rather than weaker grocery store ground beef flavor, and includes tomatoes and crushed almonds for their umami boosting properties. They drizzle ra-yu across the dish - a bit of complex smoky spicy and finally add fried garlic slices and fukujinzuke as palate cleansers. The main problems with this dish as follows - 1) Unseasoned chicken and breading. 2) Not enough curry for the entire dish. 3) They put the curry on top of the katsu, sandwiching it between the sauce and the moist rice - the liquid soaks into the breading and quickly diminishes the crunch factor (Note: the menu states "curry topped with crispy chicken cutlet" but in actuality it's the total opposite). I would pick the tonkatsu curry at Rondo over this one any day. (4/5) Tamari Bar Poutine ($10) - Fries are nicely crisped up in the fryer then tossed with salt and nori flecks, giving lots of umami. I wouldn't say the fries are especially fluffy inside, but I think they work well in the dish, especially with the meat mixture on top. The topping is a spicy and fragrant chili oil and ground pork mixture, similar to what could be found in dandan noodles, but no mala. The oil soaks into the fries, making them orange and translucent. Parmesan is shaved on top, boosting the salt and umami further. Do I consider this a poutine? Not really, but it's really good! (5/5) Wagyu Tendon Umami Shoyu Ramen ($16) - Deep, robust beef flavored broth to start, mixed with a lot of black pepper giving a peppery bite and some chili that gives some warmth and a burn down the throat on the first sip. The ramen is a little on the firm side, so the bounciness isn't quite there. Other than that, toppings include sliced garlic chives, napa cabbage, beef, and pork belly. The menu says they have beef tendon included (and only beef tendon), but there's definitely pork belly and no beef tendon... Both the beef and pork belly are exceptionally tender and basically fall apart in the mouth. The pork belly is fatty with some lean meat bits. Interestingly they score the fat. The beef comes thinly shaved in some portions, and basically fat with a thin veneer of meat in others. Sliced fried garlic gives a refreshing slight bitterness and sweetness to the dish. The ramen is served in a gigantic bowl - like over a foot across, taking up a lot of valuable table space. That's a superlative decorative choice that I don't think is necessary! (4/5) The food at Tamari Bar is good, but they really need to work on their menu descriptions. It's bad when two out of the three dishes we ordered didn't really match what the menu said... Overall, I'd probably still pick Rondo over visiting Tamari Bar again. As a side note, I'm wondering why Tamari Bar calls it "Area 206 Curry" but Rondo Calls it "224 Curry." According to the waitress, they are exactly the same. 206 makes sense to me since it's Seattle's area code, but 224? Bathrooms - Two larger ones up the stairs. Disclaimer: Haven't tried the food. Amazing drinks! Come for the double happy hour (4:30-5:30, 9-last call) and order any of their highballs. The yuzu highball is a crowd-pleaser that tastes like a lemony-grapefruit soda, while the Ume highball has a sweeter, darker flavor that tastes more unique. Stopped by Tamari Bar with a friend to check out their early (5pm-6pm) Happy Hour, and it did not disappoint! The area is open, and the hostess quick welcomed us and checked our IDs. The ambiance features several interesting pieces with a nice blend of rustic and modern. Attention to details wise, I liked the wacky uneven chopsticks... had I drank more I might not even have noticed! For drinks, we had the Yuzu Highball, and I had the Sapporo Pint. We shared their signature Tora A La carte and Tamaribar Poutine. The Tora A La Carte featured a few nice appetizers; starting from the top of the wooden staricase spiral: beef - a tad tough and chewy but tasty. A tad too vivid, but like wagyu gum. fish - tasty! There was also some cream and fish eggs, which made this A+! cucumbers - marinated nicely and a good palate wetter after the previous two appetizers octopus - clean and crisp, could not have asked for a better followup. rice - the "most filling" part of the staircase, not a hit or miss fish - think this was salmon, but a tad dry. Some parts cleaved nice, but overall it was hard to eat :( fish - unsure if eel, but this one was good! A tad too much syrup and could use a little more sear but overall a good one to end on. Overall, the movement from the beef into the colder items and then rebounding to the warmer appetizers were nice. I don't usually finish my pints, but the Sapparo with the Tora A La Carte made it very enjoyable! Poutine? Not your standard poutine, but still good nonetheless. For food, she ordered the chirashi bowl while I had the bento box special of the night. Food didn't take long to get and once it arrived at the table, we busted out our phones like everyone does here because the presentation is on point, like I previously mentioned. The bento box was elevated, with nine different items to sort through. Of the bunch, I liked the poke and albacore sashimi. Raw fish is my jam, so figures I'd like this best. I had higher expectations for the wagyu nigiri. I wanted it to melt in my mouth, but nah. It was just steak on rice, y'all. I would not order this again because it's $38 and not worth the hefty price tag. I do like the vibe a lot here at Tamari Bar even though the food wasn't the best. I mean, it's far from bad by any means. But it's expensive and you want to feel satisfied when you spend a lot of dough on a meal. Of course, this doesn't matter when you're on a first date because like Tamari Bar, you're here to impress. The whiskey caramel on their soft serve ice cream is still amazing. I've also tried their ramen now and it's fantastic. Interestingly, their egg is a soft poached egg, not the typical marinated sliced egg you get at other places. Their dumplings are solid. I do like that the specials menu changes regularly, but I am sad to not be able to order the same thing that I'd loved previously. Their happy hour is unusually early 4:30-5:30pm, but they have pretty good deals, so it's well worth it is you can get there in time. What a blast to walk into this experience of a restaurant. Even as an izakaya, it has more than just small plates. The 5 of us shared tons of sashimi, sushi roll, wagyu ramen, and more. It all tasted delicious and no complaints on the variety of alcoholic drinks either. It was meh for a Japanese restaurant. If I paid $70 for food, I would've expect it to better. The lamb was a bit overcooked and not really flavorful. My favorite dish was the Nori French Fritz. That I will order again. The sashimi tuna was a bit fishy so I was weary. Usually when it is somewhat fishy, it means the fish is going bad. I only came here because a friend insisted we dine there. I also had the bubbly lemonade too. Friend loved it his food and his sake but he didn't finish his food. I finished mine except for the raw quail egg which I let him have. Service was ok. It was really weird because we got a totally different server for when we ordered dessert. Our initial server was still there and wasn't busy. Literally looked like they grabbed the dishwasher teen to serve us dessert. I did wish the water was refilled because the cup was empty the whole night after we drank it once. The chefs said Arigato very casually when we left. I would've expected the restaurant of that caliber to say Arigato Gozaimasu. read more
