This was a perfect arrangement, as I could appreciate the lovely jazz in the background while still having an easy conversation with my friend. A quick tip for fellow brunch-goers: the Sunday jazz brunch menu is different from the Saturday one. I had my heart set on a savory crepe, which wasn't available, but my second choice turned out to be a showstopper. I ordered the Ricarda's special, which included scrambled eggs, a fresh rocket salad, bacon, sausage, and sourdough toast. The real surprise, however, was the side of mini ricotta pancakes. As someone who isn't usually a big pancake fan, I was shocked to find myself devouring every last bite of these fluffy little treats! I quite enjoyed my French toast.. it was a decent portion and hit that sweet spot. It did get overly sweet after a while though so I ended up taking leftovers home. My mom had no complaints about the eggs benny itself, but the fruit that they say the dish comes with is just sadddd. Seems their norm is to serve the fruit in those small takeout sauce containers, which only fits a few measly chopped up fruits (not even the good fruits either...). It looked like scraps to me. For a brunch spot they need to be more generous with fruit, esp when they call it out on the menu "served with fresh fruit", which my mom was looking forward to but ended up being disappointed by the portion. They were obviously very busy for Mother's Day, and I did appreciate that they have the online waitlist that you can join and monitor live remotely from your phone. Their service was fairly slow but they did acknowledge it. Overall, I think i'd try a different brunch spot next time. Now the food... the food... the food. I won't make you wait -- this place is awesome. It's Friday, so I start with the challah bread, which comes with a butter and jam mix, pickles, sauerkraut, and a nice green pickled tomato (almost like they just went full Starsky's and grabbed the homemade stuff from the corner ). We ordered a great salad and the best potato dumplings I've had in years, with a mushroom-style sauce that was fantastic. The wine and cocktails are great -- like many places on Ossington -- but somehow this place feels a little different. Let's also thank them for not keeping a tank or bathtub full of carp. Nobody really likes carp... do they? For mains we had three dishes: the fried chicken, the steak, and the pastrami. The fried chicken might be the best I've had all year. The steak was excellent and the pastrami was perfect. To be honest, the only thing I'd probably skip next time is the fried green beans. But the fries and the sides that came with the meats were great. We skipped dessert and headed over to Summer's Ice Cream in yorkville for ice cream instead. Let's just say that now that summer is around the corner and I'll be walking the Dundas and Ossington strip more often, that bar -- and that chicken -- are something I'll definitely be coming back for. Linny's, you're a real gem. This place feels like it's on its way to becoming a Toronto institution for many years to come.

We started with the beet carpaccio and dinner rolls. The dinner rolls are apparently renown. They are the soft, served-steaming-hot variety and they are accompanied by the first delight of the night...burnt butter. Yes, it's what it sounds like and it offers a caramelized, brown sugary flavour to accent the fluffy bread. The rolls were almost too fluffy, diluting the hit of butter, but this is a minor critique. The beet carpaccio was inspired. The dressing was mustard-forward, which was surprising but worked elegantly as a foil to the beet's natural sweetness. Great opener! For mains, my wife had the truffle risotto, which she approved of in flavour and texture. The dried artichoke chips were another inspired touch. I had the duck confit, which arrived crispy and on a bed of silky squash puree and a balsamic reduction that worked perfectly with the meat and the squash. In between was a layer of charred chickory that was phenomenal. Duck, Duck, Gone! Man, that was tasty. We were too full for sweets but enjoyed some digestifs before bidding adieu. We've already made plans to return.
