Just discovered this lovely, family-run neighbourhood gem and I am equal parts joyful and uncomfortably full. The "#1 fish and chips" signage caught our eyes so we ran in and let them prove it. Which they did. You can choose whatever fish ($10-$15), but the fish of the day is $9 (today it was haddock). Portion is large and great for lunch if you're hungry. Batter on the fish is perfectly light, crisp, and not as oily-seeming as it probably is. The owner/chef asked us what level of crispiness we wanted our fries to be, and I said "ummm...medium?", which is clearly the right answer because the fries were delicious. Accompany with your choice of ketchup, malt vinegar, lemon, tartar sauce, or all of the above. The owner's son was enjoying the same thing for lunch next to us. If you don't feel like going fried, everything can instead be grilled with a salad for the same price. There are also lobster rolls and fish tacos, which will definitely be my order on my next visit, which I hope is as soon as I'm physically able to eat again, which at the moment feels like never. There's also plenty of fresh seafood for sale, platters for events, and catering. Lots of happy regulars were stopping in to pick up food so obviously I'm just late to the game. read more

Fantastic local family run gem! Fish is super fresh and the owners are extremely knowledgeable. They also have a few yummy soups and some great frozen apps. We had a late in the day craving for lobster and they steamed it and had it ready for pick up in under a half hour. That's service! read more

I'm writing this review because I've recently ordered catering services for a few corporate events and personal events. I was very impressed with the quality and freshness of the seafood. I loved the amazing presentation of the seafood platters and poached salmon platter. I also purchased live lobsters and shrimp (my husband's favorites) to enjoy at home one weekend. The lobster was exceptional! This quaint clean seafood shop is owned by a nice couple, who is very genuine and has great customer service skills. Overall, I highly recommend this place as your #1 choice for fresh seafood! read more

Umm... no. Stopped in when I saw the sign #1 fish & Chips but really, how easy is that to say and why did it hook me? Probably because traffic was so slow that I decided I could stop and eat and probably get home just as quickly if I let traffic clear away a little. I give 5* on enthusiasm by the owner .... 1* on presentation ... but would have given 4* on the food itself if it really was good But I honestly don't know what kind of piece of fish that was. It didn't remind me of any piece of Halibut I've had (and Halibut & Chips has been my go-to chippy meal for 50 years). It was a very large piece of fish (unusual for Halibut), with a lot of dark flesh in it (also unusual for Halibut) and there was about 3x too much breading so the fish got a bit lost inside. It tasted fine but I had to pull much of the breading off (can't recall any other occasion when I've done this) and I just really couldn't bring myself to believe it was actually halibut. It seems that others have enjoyed it more ... which is fine with me .... I just wouldn't remotely place it at #1 (or top 50 for that matter) and the sheer volume of breading kind of did me in. read more

This is basically a fish market that has a small kitchen that can do some cooking. Their menu lets you choose between fish and chips, or fish with a salad for those who want something lighter. They have daily special for $9, which means it's nearly always going to be haddock. You can choose from various fish like bass or salmon etc. A true fish and chips store. I am usually not a fan of fish and chips but the promised freshness made me come inside. I was not disappointed in what I got. For $9 I received a very large piece of fish (easily 2 pieces at another store), and a decent portion of fries. This gets my vote for the best fish and chips in town. I just wish they had more space and had a more full selection of made to order seafood. There was 1 person working there today. It was the lady. She is super nice. You can look around the store while you wait. They have good selection of fresh seafood as well as some frozen stuff. They also have various tools and condiments that would go with your seafood cooking. Definitely worth a visit for anyone that likes to eat seafood. read more

I have lived in the neighbourhood for six years, but only started to going to Avenue Seafood in the last six months. The St. Lawrence market fish mongers have been my go to seafood supplier for years, but I wanted to give this place a try. While the store interior is nothing special, that's not important to me. I want the freshest seafood available and this store has that. While you may be disappointed by the lack of selection, don't let that discourage you from giving it a try. Because they only stock a few items, you can be guaranteed that what they do have is incredibly fresh. I am very picky about the freshness of my fish, and this place rivals, or surpasses, any other fish supplier in Toronto. Certainly a cut above all grocery stores including the high-end one (not to be mentioned). I bought a fillet of haddock today and it is the tastiest, and most moist piece of haddock I've ever had--anywhere! Give this place a try! You will not be dissapointed. read more

Saw this place a few days and based on the reviews and awards in the window I popped in for lunch today. I ordered the bouillabaisse and fish and chips for lunch. The fish and chips was great with a nice batter and delicious fries salted just right. Served with tartar sauce and your standard fare of fish and chips condiments. The bouillabaisse was nice, served with a slice of white bread and butter. It had good size chunks and fish and at least one clam and oyster but it was reheated from frozen. She did tell me that they had run out of fresh earlier but I was a bit surprised to have it served in the plastic container it was frozen in and not in a soup bowl, it was good none the less but a bit overpriced if you're not getting the fresh bowl at 7.99 I decided to order a drink mid meal and came up the counter while she was chopping fish fillets, I noticed she did not wash her hands and went into the walk in refrigerator and came back with guts still on her one hand. My stomach was mildly upset after lunch here so food handling may be an issue or perhaps it was the frozen fish stew. As a fishmonger the shop looked to have plenty of nice fillets and live lobster at decent prices, probably a decent spot to pick up seafood if you're in the neighbourhood as I saw many other customers come by during my lunch. Either way I would go back for the fish and chips and maybe in the morning for a fresh bouillabaisse. read more

Tried the fish and chips. The chips tasted old and were limp. Also ordered the fried shrimp. I would not recommend getting this. It smelt really odd and cost $20 for 6. I only ended up eating one. Thought they would be fresh and amazing since it's a fish shop. Was throughly disappointed. read more

This small family business was very welcoming and friendly. They have an excellent selection of fish and seafood. I have to say this place never disappoints me! I ordered there poached salmon for the holiday and my whole family loved it!!! I will definitely order again for the upcoming holidays, they always lessens my party preparation workload! Overall I really do recommend this place for their fish and their poached salmon. read more
