I was a bit skeptical about Takosushi, having heard about the sushi/southwestern theme of the place. But, I went home to Augusta, and asked a friend of mine to take me to a great sushi place and this is what she came up with. I took a look at their menu online (I highly recommend doing so, to be fully ready for the experience), and found a roll I wanted to try. The prices seemed SKY HIGH, and I only hoped it was worth the cost.
We went around 7pm on a Wednesday night (the day before Thanksgiving), and with all the hype i've heard about the place, I fully expected to have a long wait. I was pleasantly surprised to be seated immediately. NOTE: While the seating was quick, the place is TINY. I haven't been to any of the other locations, but the one in Surry Center is so small. We were almost on top of the couple at the table next to us, and when they seated a party of four at the table on the other side, it became quite claustrophobic. It also wasn't convenient to have a server constantly right behind/next to me (I was sitting facing the wall, my back to the inside of the restaurant. The atmosphere itself was quite laid back, no one seemed particularly in a hurry, which was nice. The bonus of the closeness, I suppose, was we saw the FANTASTIC appetizer the adjoining table was enjoying and ordered it ourselves, as did the table on the other side of us.
On to the food. I love eel rolls, so I decided on the Rock-N-Roll, plus a side of edamame. The edamame was great, well done and with a handful of coarse salt on top, perfect (but how can you screw up edamame!?). The roll was tasty, exactly what I wanted. Their wasabi was less than satisfactory. I'm not sure if it was old or cheap or what, but it was NOT spicy (and I am VERY sensitive to heat). I normally only use a small amount in my soy sauce for dipping, but I needed to make almost a wasabi paste to get the same tingling sensation I normally love with my wasabi and sushi. This to me, however, is a fairly small infarction on the idea of good sushi. The roll itself was enjoyable. My friend ordered one of their rolls with a sub of cucumber instead of scallions (I wish I could remember what it was, I believe it had smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber), which was no prob to substitute. She said the roll was great. She also ordered the tempura asparagus, which was actually panko-breaded and fried, and drizzled with a sort of spicy aioli and teriyaki sauce. It came out and looked fantastic, and it tasted even better. I highly recommend an order to share (I think it came with 6 or so LONG stalks of asparagus).
One of the negatives, to me, was the service. While it was fast, I didn't find the staff particularly friendly, though i've certainly had worse service. I would also recommend sitting outside, if possible, as it would be much quieter, and much less crowded. Also, the cost was much better than I expected. With two rolls, two appetizers, and one soda, our bill was around $25. Not bad I think! I will definitely be going back! read more
