I hadn't had Chinese food in quite some time. I ordered through Doordash because it came out about $8 cheaper than ordering directly through the restaurant's website. That alone should have been a red flag. I ordered three appetizers and two dinners. Shrimp toast, cream cheese wontons, steamed dumplings, a General Tso's combo with plain fried rice (because pork fried rice was not an option), and a pepper steak combo with fried rice as well. The shrimp toast was burnt and tasted of old stale burnt oil (see photo). The cream cheese wontons were not fresh. Definitely frozen. They were very dry and had a powdery mouth feel and were somewhat rubbery. Would not order them again. However, I want to think that the shrimp toast would be great if it wasn't burnt. The steamed dumplings were good. The dipping sauce was the best part of the entire meal. Very strong enjoyable garlic flavor in the sauce. The entrees..... Where do I begin? The Pepper steak itself tasted decent. However, there was only about a cup worth of pepper steak, and only about a tablespoon of actual meat. I wish there had been more. The rest of the container was stuffed with about 3lbs of really dry and crumbly fried rice. (see photo) The portion size of the General Tso's was about the same. Just an insane amount of rice compared to the actual entree portion. Zero pieces of green peppers or broccoli. Usually one or the other is in there at every Chinese place I've eaten at. I've never seen it made with just straight up chicken. Also, I ordered it "Extra Spicy" and it literally had zero spice to it. It tasted more like sweet and sour sauce on it. As others have stated, the food did not taste fresh overall. Just really disappointing. The egg rolls that came with the combo dinners were very small, about the size of a spring roll. Even the fortune cookies were rubbery. We didn't crack them in half. We basically unbent them to a flat state. Very odd indeed. Overall, I was left questioning whether any of the food that I ordered was actually made in house or if it was all al-a-restaurant-depo. I would probably not order from here again. If I did, I would probably give the shrimp toast another try in hopes that it didn't come out burnt again. read more

I'm honestly shocked at all the low reviews, this place was great! As soon as I walked in it reminded me of the Asian restaurants I went to as a kid in the 90s, so it has that old school feel for those old enough to understand what I'm talking about. The place was huge with only a few families in there so the service was very quick. Our server was very informative on what to get or not get and ibis recommendations did not disappoint. The portions are massive on the chefs special, especially if you plan on sharing. I got the General Tao chicken which was family sized, my boys got the chicken curry and Mongolian beef which my boys said were amazing. The chicken curry was a little spicy though, even though my son likes spicy food but we were warned by the server so he can't say he didn't know. We also got the tidbit plate for 2 which was 100% a must get with so many snacking options. Only issue was it was so much food out to-go boxes were filled to the brim for leftovers another day. Don't let this tucked away gem slip past your dining options, we've lived here for almost a decade and now I wish I would have discovered this place sooner. read more

I love the shrimp foo yung. Fast service and the old school decor is really cool. A couple of improvements: The beef on the pu pu platter. It's really tough to bite and should be cut against the grain so it's easier to chew. And the shrimp toast could be a bit crunchier. Definitely love this place and love going back. Decided after 25 years to try this place out after one of their regulars recommended it. Went in for dinner and my family was seated quickly and our waiter was very attentive. Ambiance reminded me of the old school Chinese restaurants I used to go with my parents too, so it had the good relaxing feeling. They have all the "normal" Chimes staple choices. I chose to go with the Formosa Pot which had chicken, beef and shrimp for proteins and broccoli, peppers, and onions for veggies. Was a good recommendation from our waiter. It was a tasty dish and a healthy portion. I went with their "combo" type menu option that came with a soup, I chose Hot and Sour, an egg roll and a drink. I did notice that everything that my family chose the portions were a good size and everyone had leftovers to take home. Our son had Orange Chicken and it was pretty good also. Wished I could have given this local restaurant 5 stars but .... First off the place looks and smells clean. However you walk past way too much restaurant prep before you get to the dining room. The area past the register needs to be revamped and screened off. Sorry I know you got to refill condiments and roll silverware but that is really no front of the house decor. Dining room itself is lovely, soft water sounds from the fountain were nice, fresh plants around the fountain and some atmospheric music would be nice touches. Service was spot on fast and friendly could not ask for better. Biggest problem I see is the food. It's not bad but not really good either. Potstickers were well browned and crispy, just really had no flavor and the dipping sauce had a really weird gym sock aftertaste. The cashew chicken was better sadly half of it was celery, seriously if I had ordered celery chicken I would have been thrilled. Except for the almost overwhelming celery flavor the taste was good needed more sauce and cashews. Overall not a bad dining experience but there is a lot of room for improvement. My main issue is that every entree arrived packed with fried rice that I didn't order. Formosa's did not specify rice was included with every dish and packed mixed together. Not only does the rice soak up the sauce and ruin the dish, but it's way too much rice! The entree sizes are so small compared to it. And to clarify, I did not order combo plates and did not find any option to select rice or no rice. I recommend you leave a note with every dish that you don't want rice. Or call the restaurant and let them know to pack without rice. I can't recommend the dishes as anything beyond mediocre Chinese food, but even mediocre Chinese is pretty good. Full transparency, I've passed by this establishment for years with the intention of visiting for a meal. Formosa II Chinese Restaurant located on Davis Road in Augusta, GA finally visited for a meal and my first impression was... ok, another Chinese restaurant however once you get pass the entrance the decor submerged you to a different place. They have a fountain in the middle of the dining area... Asian art work decorate the entire place which I though was really cool... I was impressed with the customer service and friendly welcoming and really enjoyed the interior. The food was served fresh, hot, and delicious. We enjoyed everything from appetizers to entrees. My husband loves this place so I keep trying again but today is my final try. Spent 32 on lunch, and tipped, on a Togo order. Got home and order was wrong. Called them about it and they were rude when I brought it back. Our main dishes were sesame chicken and honey chicken. We got sweet and sour and what looked and tasted like chicken thats been sitting in sweet and sour sauce for a while. It was mushy and gross. The egg rolls were dark brown and so greasy, they dripped when you picked them up. I'm sorry but if I'm paying that much for a lunch special AND tip on a Togo order that yall don't have to do and work on, I expect not to be treated like it's my fault yall messed up, or my fault you served me chewy old chicken that tastes like the smell of dog food/breath. They left and it was just us. Food came and everything tasted good. As we were eating I noticed something in my peripheral vision. Not once but a few times. So I decided to focus a little harder. I wanted to disprove all the short and bland reviews, but after having their lunch special I'm disappointed to admit they were right. The lunch special is very cheap. They're all around $5 and comes with your choice of fried chicken wings or egg roll, fried rice, and the meal. I ordered the lemon chicken convo with egg roll. The moment the waitress took the menus, she came out with a plate of egg roll. There's no way that this egg roll was fresh. I was right. It was stale and tasted like it was under a heat light. The chicken were standard frozen pre battered chicken parts deep fried. The worst part was the fried rice. A staple and seemingly foolproof, this was the worst fried rice I ever had. I would even suspect if it was even fried at all. The rice was mixed with a lot of sesame seed oil and soy sauce. I've always liked this Chinese restaurant, for the layout and for the soup! I always get the Sizzling Rice Soup, it's soo tasty!! Every time I get it I ask for extra water chestnuts!! I'm not a big fan of the shrimp but it comes with chicken and beef, which makes the soup that much more better! I can also say that this soup would be delicious without the meat! It has bamboo shoots, green peppers, baby corn and much more! The fried rice is pretty good, which was surprising to me. I've been here so many times but never ordered it and I'm glad I did today! When it comes to the entrees, a lot of the dishes are the same. At least the meat is and vegetables are. It just tastes like they put different sauce on the meat and name it something different. I'm not sure if I can blame them much for that but I'm sure this can help them have a smaller menu to present to those of us who don't know much about Chinese food. I also must say, they put a pepper next to the menu item that they consider "spicy" but the dishes aren't spicy at all...more like "just not sweet or sour". Another plus about this restaurant is when you place an order for delivery, it's the same quality as if you went to eat at the restaurant.
