Grabbed dinner here Thursday night and got a beef bulgogi dish and the Kim bop appetizer. Both were good and I loved all the sides that came with the bugilgi! I got a taro Boba because I remember them being really good a while back (this flavor specifically), however, I was really disappointed when I tried the Boba.. The flavor was almost nonexistent and it was almost as though it was sugarless.. I let our server know and she apologized and let me know that they recently switched companies for this flavor. They attempted to add more of the flavor/syrup, but it just wasn't the same. I ended up getting a strawberry Boba instead, which was much better. Been missing good Korean food since moving to Tucson from the NW. We were so pleased. The staff were great. The owners take much pride in their food. The BiBim Bop was awesome. There were so many flavors that were so well balanced you could taste everything! Definitely our new go to when we need to scratch that itch! Oh, and it's so nice to know there is a Korean restaurant that IS NOT Korean BBQ. I don't understand how people don't know the difference. This was my first visit here and I'd glanced at other reviews before we came. While many others complained about service, we had a wonderful, friendly server who checked on us often. I was a little more taken aback by the older, dingy feel of the restaurant. We were there for lunch and it felt very dark and uninviting. I felt the food was served in generous portions. We ordered gyoza, Kimchee Bokeum, and Teriyaki Chicken. The three of us agreed that everything was cooked to our satisfaction. You can really never go wrong with gyoza. read more

Despite some of the negative reviews, we decided to come here and try it out for our self. I am very glad we did because we really enjoyed our visit. The food was delicious, we got happy hour sushi ( California roll, rainbow roll, and dragon roll.) our server was very attentive and was consistently checking up on us. Have gone there many times in the past couple years and gotten lunch specials, which I was very happy with. Went today and it was a huge disappointment. Ordered the Matsu set, which I've always gotten, and instead of 6 pieces of fish, I got three pieces of fish, a thin strip of shrimp and one of those fake crab leg strips. The roll it comes with has always been tuna. Today it was California roll. I had to tell the waitress they only have me 5 pieces (which she was nice about and brought me 2 pieces for the error), but clearly they are just cheaping out on this lunch special now. I went here for the first time today with my family. The food and service were excellent. We will for sure go back.

My sister wanted gamjatang for her birthday. Takamatsu has gamjatang on their menu AND they also have a few vegan options. So my family and I drove about half an hour to the location and found a huge parking lot available at this restaurant. It has a typical entrance with a waiting area and the bathroom next to each other. Next area is the Korean BBQ section and then after that is the section for non-BBQ diners. It's a simple architectural design decision that ensures customers who aren't interested in BBQ are not around smoke that could stick to their clothes. So my sister ordered her gamjatang, my Mom ordered a bulgogi meal, and my other sister ordered soondubu. My Dad (who is very picky with his food) orders grilled salmon. The server was attentive and was able to customize a couple of the orders for us. I ordered the tofu bibimbap - which can be made vegan by excluding the egg. I also ordered beer. The wait wasn't too long and we all loved what we ordered. Also, the portions were enough for each of us. The bibimbap was actually a lot and I did take leftovers home. After that experience, we came back a couple of weeks after when we had relatives visiting from CA and IL. During that visit, I ordered a vegan specialty sushi and it was delicious! I highly recommend it. There were 10 of us there and there were no issues with seating. We came for lunch and everyone else got bento. My relatives were impressed with the food that when we were back home, they wondered if the restaurant was on Doordash! Both times we visited, it was around noon and the place wasn't as crowded as we expected. It's definitely a great place for large parties. Also, the music they play is lit! I went there with a friend on last weekend. I get Bulgogi Dolsot Bibim Bop with hot bowl, my friend is vegan, he got the same thing but substitute beef with tofu,and get rid of the egg. And the waitress definitely knows what she is doing, she recommended that substitution and pointed out which side dish is vegan as well, my friend liked it. I also get to try this peach makkoli - basically 3% rice alcohol, sweet and tasty, definitely recommending it to anyone who wants to try rice alcohol. The only thing I hope they could separate the normal dining and open bar section from the BBQ section, even though it has ventilation on top of each BBQ table, but still a lot of smoke made it into normal dining section, otherwise I would give 5stars. read more

By far the worst experience. Ambiance was weird and we arrived right at 2 PM. We ordered food and drinks and had a decent time waiting. That was until a man emerged from the kitchen and yelled "Amanda" continuously. A waitress who I assume was Amanda walked up and proceeded to be belittled by the cook stating "it's not lunch any more". The waitress told the angry cook the table had sat and ordered by 2:25 PM, so she placed the order as lunch. The cook very angrily stated "well you should've told them it's not lunch because now I have to make it" He seemed put off that he had an audience and his demeanor only lightened slightly. Thanks to local Yelp Elite, Dahee's recommendation, we had a fabulous dinner. Extensive menu options on yes, 7 menus: Korean including lesser known soups; 8 hot & spicy soft tofu Soon Doo Bu's; Cold Noodles, Sushi, Bento & course K-BBQ. My Spicy Squid hot stone bowl $16.95 with crispy rice and veggies, Oh Jing Uh Dolsot Bop was such a treat, with just the usual chix, beef, or pork bibimbap on offer in every other restaurant, and it was spot on, tons of squid, lovely crispy bites of rice from the sides of the piping hot bowl, veggies carrots zucchini, bolstered by the fantastic au gratis banchan, small veggie & fishcake sides that accompany your Korean main. The napa kimchi was the best I've ever had, and have ate lots with Korean cooks in our family restaurant ;) Dolsot Bap was enough for 2.5 meals, hubby and I shared leftover the next day. Hubby was very happy & full belly with his Happy Hr 50% off beers ($3 for drafts: Barrio Rojo local brew & $3.25 Sapporo) and discounted miso $1.65, sushi $3.25 (tuna, salmon, yellowtail was my fave, & Seattle roll $5.25. His fave was the spicy jalapeno seared albacore $4. Our server Linda was very experienced, previous manager, patient with us out of towners visiting for the first time, explaining the 7 menus to peruse, brought samples of local brews, checked in often and offered extra banchan, even tracking down the extra, nightly special side, tofu banchan when she realized it had not been included when the dishes were initially delivered to the table. Notice on doors ask guests to please wear mask if unvaxxed, tables are spaced out on the far side and do fill up, as do the more crowded BBQ section. With a large outside area, it would be Covid-friendly, preferred, & a great option to expand the dining room to the fresh air with natural rays, patio tables and umbrella like so many of their uptown compadres. Cost & staffing always a concern but would definitely elevate this experience. I'm a bit late to the party in trying Takamatsu out! Perhaps I was hesitant to due to rating, or perhaps the location not being in my area - regardless, I was surprised how much I did enjoy it for what it was, and for what the restaurant does offer. ... this spot hosts a unique menu experience, from the fry it yourself tables, to different styles of cultured cuisines; some being more familiar than others... The restaurant itself is decent in size, and although the ambiance being so-so in some spaces, as well as some tables and even (leaking) ceilings, more questionable than others - it does offer enough space for parties or the comfort of bringing your family, all despite. The service was both friendly and pleasant, even if even a tad confusing, since I didn't anticipate wait staff to be as casually dressed or as young as they were - regardless, they were attentive and brought us an array of food pairing for our dinner that were quite tasty and fun to try. For the food, we tried the gyozas for starters, as well Japanese Sapporo beer on draft. .. The gyozas were made of veggies and beef. Although tasty, these were just decent enough, but nothing out of this world. The beer also good, but found my draft a bit warm and watery, but fine enough. For our main entrée; we ordered the Bibimbap bowl. The bowl has rice, veggies, fried egg, and beef. .. The dish itself was served in a scorching, sizzling hot bowl that was carried out on a mini dish for burn avoidance. Because I enjoy my food being hot, I appreciated this, but found that this was also the only reason i simultaneously didn't get to really enjoy the dish, as well. what I did like, was the presentation, and freshness, (at least with the veggies), seemed fresh - but continued to cook as I ate it since the bowl itself worked as a woke essentially.. this made it a bit difficult to enjoy since it was constantly at a consistent hot temp that was not ideal for gobbling down, and frankly, STEAMING hot the whole time I ate it, which eventually made the rice at the bottom too crunchy to eat as I sloooowly worked my way down to the bottom of the dish, due to needing to cool it off simultaneously. . . . . . . I do appreciate having an establishment that offers a fun, unique dining experience; and welcome all the Asian flare to Tucson we can get. Great for vegetarians and kids! Looking at the online menu, I was doubtful, but the server was so helpful in identifying which items could be made vegetarian. She even checked with the kitchen about potential ingredients and was very conscientious about what each item might contain. She asked about whether we wanted any banchan that contained fish sauce, and checked in to make sure we got just what we needed. Also, the kids meal was the best I've even seen! It was the most well-balanced, nutritious, beautiful meal that all the adults were envious of the 5 yr old. My kid loved the chicken Teriyaki and us parents were very grateful to have more options than the usual fried crap that are marketed to kids. We had three generations eating, with varying degrees of Korean and Japanese restaurant exposure, so it was wonderful that there were so many options that everyone found things they loved. I've driven by several times, but I finally came to try out the Korean BBQ. There are areas for sushi and regular Korean/Japanese food as well. They had specialty cocktails that came out quick even on a Friday night. The server was friendly and offered recommendations. You have to order a minimum of two entrees for the bbq but you can order additional sides/rice. We chose beef bulgogi and spicy pork belly, but other entree options were octopus, shrimp, scallops, and kalbi. Our grill got a little smoky but it was fun grilling your own food and it was good. Ladies happy hour almost every week. We sit at the sushi bar due to the itamae's ( sushi chefs) are very friendly and they make excellent sushi. As far as the waitresses that bring you your drinks need to be more attentive. We usually only see them when we arrive to order drinks and then when they bring our checks. There is no checking if we need anything during the time we are there. Since you are talking usually an hour or so. But the sushi is truly worth going there. read more

Food is pretty good. Place seems to be dying. Customers are sat so far apart all over the place which makes it look so empty. A little music would make the atmosphere a little more alive too. I have noticed the last three times I have visited, the glass windows are so dirty. You can tell they don't use actual window cleaner. For me it's a big downer to see dirty stuff. Sounds silly but clean glass makes a huge difference in a restaurant and welcoming. Staff have masks on but masks just hang under their mouths. Just take the darn thing off! I love that Takamatsu is adapting well to COVID-19 safety measures while still offering their variety of delicious Japanese and Korean cuisine. I'm a regular customer at Takamatsu but have not picked up any food since the pandemic started. However, I heard that Takamatsu has an efficient and safe curbside pickup process! With Grubhub or a phone call to Takamatsu, you can place your order. There is a designated curbside pickup area in their parking lot. Ring the doorbell, collect your food from an employee wearing a mask, and enjoy your food at home! The best thing about Takamatsu's curbside service is the way they package the food. The soup I ordered was in a large, insulated container. Additionally, each banchan was wrapped separately. Everything was incredibly professional! The food was delicious. My favorite dish that is consistently tasty is the tteok mandu guk. This mild soup is warm and comforting with beef, green onions, rice cakes, eggs, and dumplings. The chicken teriyaki bento is also yummy. The chicken teriyaki is not too sweet with light caramelization. All of the sides included with the bento were additionally tasty. Takamatsu has been one of my go-to restaurants for happy hour sushi for years. Their happy hour menu has a decent selection on it, and very good prices -- none of that nonsense where it's only a couple of rolls and a barely-there discount. My preference is to sit at the sushi bar, since I usually go with just one friend, and I like watching the sushi chefs work. The service tends to be better at the sushi bar as well, perhaps since the chef just hands you your rolls and there's no intermediary server. While I almost always get sushi, Takamatsu has great Korean dishes, as well as the tabletop grills for Korean BBQ. When it's cold, I'm a big fan of the sundubu-jigae -- a spicy tofu soup that comes out boiling hot and hits you with amazing, fragrant steam while you wait for it to cool enough to eat. They also have some good noodle entrees, and a strong appetizer variety. read more

5 for service; 3 for food. (I really thought I was at the restaurant down the street, so I'll have to give it a try in comparison.) You decide when you walk in if you're having Korean BBQ or Japanese, and they seat you accordingly. I chose the sushi side. The menu at Takamatsu is extensive, i.e. a bit overwhelming. Fish-in-the-desert is always a "concern," but I will say the sushi I got tasted quite fresh, so that didn't cause disappointment. What was disappointing was the amount of rice they used. I normally would have considered their subtlety sweet sticky rice an asset; there was just too much of it compared to the fish-to-rice ratio. It's not that there wasn't enough fish; there was just too much rice. I also got a roll, and it was overpowered by the sweet sauce they drizzle on top. The roll might not have had much flavor at all if it didn't have that sauce on it, though. I was unpleasantly surprised at how insipid their roll with eel and avocado was. Plus, $3.50 for a glass of club soda seemed a bit extreme. Like I said, since I thought I was at a different restaurant, I'll have to go to the other one (Taegukgi) & let y'all know the difference. read more

The place could use a cosmetic facelift, but it was clean and comfortable, and I don't really feel like paying more money in exchange for fresh paint, so I am good with it. Takamatsu is usually my go to place for Korean BBQ. But over the years, the dining experience there has just gotten worse and worse. I think tonight may have been our last visit. I will say, I've enjoyed the food here. I especially enjoy the Korean pancake appetizer although once in a while it comes out burnt. The trouble with the experience here is the really really poor service. :( All the staff seem stressed out and adversarial from the moment you walk in. It's not like a "hi! Welcome in!" kind of vibe. It can be off-putting if you're there for a date or celebration. If you have thick skin and it doesn't bother you, then at least it's somewhere in town where you can do Korean BBQ. Our experience tonight was probably my last straw with them which makes me sad since I believe they are locally owned. I was a server all through college and a while afterward, so for me to become upset, the service has got to be really really bad. My husband and I made a reservation for 7:30 (today is Saturday). I'm 7 months pregnant, so we don't go out often because of my swollen feet, but we made the effort tonight. When we arrived on time, we were offered any of the open KBBQ tables. There were 3 empty ones in a row and a 4th that needed bussing. We took the 2nd empty table. We hung out a while and someone eventually came and turned on our burner. We asked her if she was our server and she just stared at us all weird and said "no they'll come by". She gave me the weirdest expression like she didn't understand why we asked that. Even though I asked in a nice, normal way! But no big deal. Thought it was a fluke. A while passed and still no one came by to greet us or offer water. The 2 tables (in front and behind us) were eventually seated. The table that was dirty was bussed and seated as well. Still no one came by. Another girl came by to drop off some tongs for the grill and I asked her as well if she was our server. She also gave me a confused look and was like "no" and just left. Lol. We were like "??lol????".... When ALL three other tables had been served drinks and we hadn't been acknowledged yet, my husband checked in with the hostess to make sure we had a server assigned to us. She just said, yea she'll be right there, but she didn't go find anyone or leave the stand afterward. Believe me. I watched. Haha The table in front of us (who had arrived maybe 5 minutes after us) ordered and received ALL their food-- sides AND their meat. Still no one had come by to offer us even a water. I checked the time at 7:57pm when we still did not have a server come to greet us or take a drink order. The second girl from earlier came back by again at that exact time, and we asked her what was going on. She didn't apologize and just stared at us and said in monotone "we're really busy right now". Not to nitpick, but her tone was actually implying that we were being rude to ask. She was looking at us like we were being difficult even though we were being so nice to everyone about the whole thing! I pointed out that the three tables around us had arrived after us and they all had drinks and one already had their food. Busy or not, it didn't make sense. She actually looked at us like we were crazy. It was... bizarre. If anyone along the line had been apologetic at all and just said they forgot about us, we would have been totally fine-- but they were all weird and she was actually being adversarial when we were being so understanding and patient. We had been there for over 25 minutes with not even a glass of water. And we had been so moronically patient and friendly with them, checking in asking what was going on. It just doesn't compute. In reality all three staff we interacted with were just... weird. Really bad service... like we were a mouse in the kitchen. We ultimately made the decision to leave without ordering. That's a big deal for a pregnant person. Haha No one apologized or seemed to care at all. That's ok. We went to elsewhere and had an amazing dinner. So it all turned out well. It's a confusing place, at first, for the first timer. There is a menu and seperate area for Korean BBQ, sushi, and general Asian. We wanted sushi. Standard fare on the sushi menu, we had a few nigiri, rolls, miso, beer, and a salad. Nothing special overall, a solid 3*. We were there for 9-11pm happy hour, so that reduced prices for us. As travelers we had no idea about the HH, but what a good idea. It's a winner. Our server tried her best but she was not knowledgable about her products at all. Good thing we knew what we were doing. We also ordered pork belly, but this entree wasn't available and we didn't find out until the order arrived. This was upsetting because there was not enough food for everyone. The beef bulgogi was delicious, however the portion was not much. We were also missing the Banchan, or Korean side dishes. I am not sure if we have to special request them with a delivery order, but these side dishes are typically included when you dine in. If you plan to order delivery, be sure to find a way to get your Banchan with your order. Korean BBQ is not the same without it. Cheers! read more

Food is great. Service is pretty bad. Kbbq is tasty, meat is excellent, aps were delicious but they aren't attentive like they used to be. Had to wait 15mins for someone to change out the grill, and they didn't even come by to turn it off after we were done. Service used to be excellent and this place is much better than other kkbq in town (marinade is just right and not too sweet). As for service, we came on a Friday night and they weren't even busy at the time we visited. On top of that our waitress took our order and then we didn't see her for quite a while. She was pleasant and friendly but didn't pay enough attention to us, never bothered to ask if we needed anything which is below my expectations for a restaurant that is this pricey for kkbq. In the end they ignored us and we had to beg for the check. Eat here if you're not in a hurry and don't mind being ignored. Please get better staff and we'll be back. read more
