TLDR: tired place, tired food, tired service... Favorite Oldest Grand Daughter (FOGD) was working yesterday so missed family Thanksgiving. I took her out for lunch to help make up for the missed turkey (take that any way you want, sports fans). I gave her a choice of sushi or Indian buffet; she chose Taj Mahal. Taj has been around for many years but somehow I've missed it. I heard it has a nice buffet (a decent value for $19 at lunch). When we arrived there were very few patrons so server said we had our pick of seats. We sat at a booth near the bar, near the buffet. Seats were ratty but in better shape than other booths. We grabbed plates at the bar and went for food - which was really tired and dried out even though it was was well before lunchtime ended. Server said she would bring pans of rice, butter chicken, saag, and naan so we tried what was available. Samosas were cold inside but filling was tasty; chickpeas that came with it were really good but again, cold. Onion pakoras were great, but some chutneys would have been nice. Goat curry was tasty, dry-spiced potatoes were good and had enough heat to make them interesting, but everything else was middle-of-then-road. When the fresh dishes came out we replaced out plates and tried again. Butter chicken and saag were really, really good, rice was really crunchy (undercooked) and quickly dried out under the warming lamps, and naan was good when very fresh but quickly got crunchy. We did not go back for more and skipped the salad/dessert choices. Frederick has a bunch of really good Indian (and Pakistani and Afghani) restaurants (mmmmm, Mint Room, Tulip Grill, and Mayako) so I would not put Taj Mahal anywhere the top of my list of similar places. read more

My partner and I were looking for Indian food in Fredrick and stumbled upon this place. We came here for dinner on a Thursday night around 7 and the staff were attentive and quick. When we walked in, it was pretty empty except one other group dining in, but as it got later, more people trickled in. We got the butter chicken, aloo mutter, and garlic naan. The butter chicken was delicious and had a good amount of chicken thigh pieces in it. The aloo mutter had a slight kick to it that paired perfectly with the garlic naan. The portions were generous and we had half of the butter chicken and aloo mutter to take home. I will definitely be back to try more items on the menu! read more

I get that the Mint Room is glamorous. But the food quality and authenticity and nuance of flavors is far superior at Taj Mahal, a hole in the wall place. Don't be afraid of the looks on the outside, it's truly yummy food. And I would guess much healthier than many other places. Instead of being drowned in oil (or ghee or cream), the dishes are light and beautifully flavored. You can actually taste the vegetables! Whereas the Mint Room (also good) is extremely oily and salty, the dal and vegetables really get to speak here at Taj Mahal. Highly recommend (and it won't break the bank, either!) read more

I remember enjoying this place the first time I came here with some friends. I wanted to show off this place to my husband when I craved Indian food one day. Upon walking in, there was no one to greet/seat us. Was passing through so grabbed dinner here. Ordered a Taj Mahal beer, the pani puri & the lamb Vindaloo. Pani puri wasn't good, very plain tasting. The lamb Vindaloo was good and they got the spice level right that I asked for. It was Tuesday evening 8.20pm ish, they weren't busy and service was a little slow. I would definitely recommend you come here for a buffet option! Not the cheapest but good quality. Great array of Indian food choices. More than three dishes for vegetarians and dishes with meats. There's also really bomb pani puri. Also had dessert to wash it all down! The rice was a bit crunchy in some parts and were small amounts but all in all I enjoyed my food and ate so well. Taj Mahal is located at the old Frederick Town Mall. There's plenty of parking and the decor is Indian themed with old wooden bar at the front entrance as you walk into the building. I went during lunch, so they were serving the lunch buffet. There was not a hostess to greet us, but there was plenty of seating and it's a pretty large space. There are white table cloths and silverware prepared at each table before you arrive. The lunch buffet has a large selection of goat curry, butter chicken, tandoori chicken, potatoes, fried fritters, naan, yogurt and cilantro based dips. There are plenty of vegetarian options as well. Most of the dishes that I was able to try were delicious and flavorful. The owner was friendly and asked if we needed anything during our meal. Since it was a buffet, the waitress would clear our plates the few times we would get up to fix ourselves another plate, so they were attentive. It's a great place for lunch since there was not a wait time to be seated or served. I highly recommend to try Taj Mahal if you're ever in the mood for Indian food. read more

The food was really unimpressive at Taj Mahal. We went for lunch around 1pm on Thursday. There weren't many people in the restaurant so maybe we caught the end of lunch. The food didn't seem very fresh. The naan was like cardboard. The tandoori chicken was dry. The chicken tikka (or maybe it was butter chicken) was passable but none of the food had much spice or flavor. At $18, it was expensive for not good food. We were just passing through so not likely to have the occasion to go here again. Next time, we'll look elsewhere. read more

Yummy. When I ordered my Chicken Saag spicy, you certainly delivered! For me, it was on the cusp of being too hot. That's just how I like it. The non-spicy spices were very aromatic. Your Garlic Naan came out crispy and delicious. Next time I'll order two. I didn't leave room for dessert. Save me some Gulab Jamun for next time. Thanks. I ordered a lamb curry and a cup of ginger ale for delivery. There are two things I'm not happy about them. 1. They did not provide any silverware. 2. They just gave me a cup of carbonated water not ginger ale. They did not check about the color of soda. Usually, the color of gonger ale is a light shade of yellow but what I got is transparent colorless liquid. I do not like their service. read more

It's in the dead mall, beside Boscov's. Access from the parking lot. Expense spared on decor design. You walk in and it doesn't actually look like much. But the people working there are very friendly and too polite. It puts you at ease right away. If you're there for the lunch buffet - and I do recommend that - you get seated and just go ahead to the buffet. The plates are on the window-facing side, as are the carnivore options. There is an additional service are on this side with more yums and sweet things. The other side is for the herbivore-minded, like myself. Can I ask you to please try the Chana Masala chickpea dish at the end of the buffet in the giant drum cymbal? It has those deep-fried dough things with savory veggie insides on it too. I will say this- the buffet is pricey. I'm just being honest, it's more expensive than I think it should be, but it is remarkably good! 3.5 based on our 1st visit. The location (which is not really the restaurant's fault) is kind of off-putting, being in a basically abandoned mall. We pulled up and were not even sure it was open, as there were only about 3 cars in the entire "mall" lot. But we saw an employee come out the door and know that a lot of great food comes from un-fancy places so we decided to give it a try. It looks like the main business comes from buffet service (which wasn't happening at 7:30-ish at night). The rest of the dining area was a bit dated but clean, and the service was ok. We got vindaloo and chettinad. Both were very tasty, and although the portions didn't look huge when they came out, we both took home leftovers. The naan was delicious, a very nice combination of thick fluffy bites and thin crispy bites. I don't know that I'd go out of my way to go back, but if I'm in the area I'd definitely stop (maybe during buffet hours). I hope the mall gets a buyer or some tenants to make the area a little more welcoming to help this place out. read more

We drove quite a distance to come here based on the reviews, and ended up being disappointed. The food was dry and lukewarm, and they did not honor the drink price on their website. The menu posted states drinks are included with the buffet. When asked about it, the waiter stated that was an outdated menu and gave no apologies for misrepresenting their prices. Will not be back. There wasn't many customers when I walked in, but I was greeted instantly by my server. I got the Pani Puri as an appetizer and the Chicken Korma as my entree. It was my first time trying both dishes. The Pani Puri had a lot of flavors and you're supposed to put the mint chutney in the pocket of the dish. Now personally, I'm not a fan of cilantro, but the subtleness of it in this dish made me enjoy it (which is really rare). The Chicken Korma was extremely good, the chicken was cooked perfectly. I would definitely recommend getting this dish. The rice was okay. The garlic naan was pretty good. The service was good as well and the music was nice to listen to. I came here for lunch the other day and enjoyed the food. I had the Chicken Vindaloo which was good and pretty spicy. I paired it with the Onion Kulcha bread which was really good. They give you a ton of Basmati Rice, so I was unable to finish that. The bar service was good. My main complaint is that the bar stools are wobbly and feel unsafe. read more

I very much appreciate good Indian food, and the service and food at Taj Mahal are always five star quality. We came here tonight for a birthday and it was absolutely the right choice. The manager and server were attentive and engaging. The music is wonderful, the lighting just right to have a nice meal, and the decor welcoming. It's a place I can sit and enjoy the meal and my company without needing to feel forgotten or that I need to yell. Tonight we started with the Samosa chaat, which was better than expected. My partner ate her favorite dish, the butter chicken, and always, it was fantastic. She closed out with a mango lassi which our little guy tried and loved. I took a different approach tonight and went for the lamb vindaloo. The spice was perfectly balanced with the flavor. Even as I type I can still feel the residual heat on my tongue. It was a great choice and one I indeed to make again in the future. There were no leftovers to take home as I happily finished the entire dish! I closed out with the masala tea, which has an excellent spice flavor. The little guy was happy to stick with chicken tenders and French fries. He's working up to better flavors though, tasting the butter chicken and garlic naan. They even gave him a child size portion of mango lassi! I think this is a really good restaurant. I've ordered pick up a few times recently and am very pleased. Like many Indian restaurants, they have a healthy respect for vegetarian options. I've had the paneer tikka masala and the mutter paneer and they were both delicious. Lots of flavor but not too spicy. Not even close to being too spicy. I also had the chicken curry and it was scrumptious. You can see why curries have become so popular in the UK, US and elsewhere. I tried the onion kulcha and loved it! It's like naan but a little moister and more flavorful in my opinion. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the rice. It was really dry and stiff. I tried to eat it but finally gave up. It's great to see more menu diversity out on the Golden Mile. If you try this place I bet you'll like it. read more

I ordered through Uber eats. The food was delicious, hot, decently packaged. Definitely ordering there again. I do wish they would have put in silverware and something to mix the rice the entree in, it was very difficult to eat at work with no utensils and no plate or bowl. Food wise- very very good. I got goat curry. It was decently portioned for the price. It had great flavor. It could have been a bit spicier but I like really spicy food. Enjoyed the dish I ordered, chicken saag, very tasty. Restaurant was very nice inside, clean and it was quite evident by the service that the staff take great pride in their restaurant and food. My meat and potatoes hubby accompanied me and ordered a house salad and the fish pakora, plenty of food. He's definitely not adventurous but was very happy with his lunch. I had the samosa chat as an appetizer, and quite honestly that alone with their amazingly delicious garlic naan bread would have been plenty. Although I find the food excellent I do not recommend this restaurant. I had a bill of $37.59 for carryout food that I picked up from the restaurant. Since it was carryout, I left a small tip of $2.50. This restaurant added an additional 22.50 to the tip and put through the amount of $62.59 as the charge amount. When I called the restaurant they were unwilling to give me a refund and only said they would make it right when I come in again. I will NEVER frequent this dishonest establishment again and do not believe they want me to spend more money in order to get my money back. I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau as well as filing a claim through my bank as I do have the receipt in my possession. Stay away or pay in cash. read more

As a huge fan of Indian food, this was an amazing spot to find. They have a lovely buffet, and I found the food to be a nice middle ground of mild to high medium (nothing overly hot that only a few people can eat, it was all so good). The service was amazing, very nice and quick on seating, cleaning up the plates, and offering water. My party had brought a cake to eat somewhere for a special occasion, and the staff allowed us to set up in another room have a nice little sit down. Which was so nice of them, they cleared a table in another room with a super awesome set up. The inside of a great family friendly spot, I didn't feel out of place wearing a shirt and sandals, and the noise level was not over bearing. They had background music, which a huge plus, and it was not overly loud or too quiet. A-MAZING! On our first visit my husband had the Chicken Tikka Masala and I had the Butter Chicken. It was so good. The naan bread was warm and fresh. On our second visit He had the Chicken Momo and I had Chicken Saag. Another great meal! Great value as well. We will definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for Indian cuisine. read more

The food was outstanding Loved they had more options then other Indian restaurants. Tried some new things, as well as favorites. I was not disappointed with anything. Onion pakora was something new. So I was really excited to try this new Indian restaurant in Frederick- full disclosure... I had high expectations but when I got the food it was first COLD- second the aloo saag(spinach potatoes) had literally no flavor and the tandoori chicken was dry so dry we could barely eat it. The garlic naan was decent and so were the samosas(spicy potatoes). The rice was fine but was cold as well. The best part about the meal was the mango also which was amazing. And the rusmalai was hot lmao- so basically expect opposite temperature from what the meal is supposed to be. We requested utensils and napkins- neither came with the meal. I paid $24 and some change to pick wateva from the buffet and it was absolutely worth it! I picked a variety of options and all of them were good. I got some curry goat, saag paneer (could've had more paneer but wasn't an issue), samosa, chicken biryani, butter naan, butter chicken, and some cucumbers for the spice.
