Went here recently for a meal with family. We all ordered various dishes. It was a mix bag in terms of satisfaction. I liked the mussels, but the jambalaya is what Gen Z would label as mid. Not really authentic at all. Rice was plain and there was no Cajun flavor profile. I also had the cream of crab soup and that was ok. Unfortunately for them, I just had that at Fisherman's Crabdeck near Annapolis as well and that totally smashed the soup at Ragin by comparison. Our server was good though and attentive. My widf and I decided to give this place a try after reading the Yelp reviews. We love seafood and there are no good seafood restaurants in our immediate area in Pa. Interestingly, the restaurant is in the middle of a residential neighborhood. The off street parking lot is small but fortunately there is paid street parking by an app, with no coin acceptance. There are approximately six-eight outdoor tables in the front of the restaurant that seat about four people each. The indoor dining area seats approximately eighty guests. This is by no means a fancy restaurant but it is clean and comfortable Our server Jalin was very sweet and attentive and recommended several dishes. Beer and mixed drinks are also served here. We started with the fried calamari as an appetizer. The calamari had a delicious crunchy coating and was not chewy. For pur main dishes, my wife had the pecan and coconut crusted flounder and I had the seafood jambalaya. Both dishes were excellent with generous portions. Neither of the dishes were overcooked, with the flounder was light and prepared perfectly. Prices were reasonable and worth every penny, especially with how generous the portions were. We will definitely be going back to try other dishes and recommend giving this restaurant a try. read more

A very nice Cajun style seafood restaurant. Good service was quick to refill drinks and make sure everything was satisfactory. Ambience is casual and roomy even during peak service. A bit noisy for me to hear a conversation easily. The food was excellent. I tried the seafood jambalaya with had fish, scallops shrimp and spicy sausage with Cajun seasoning over brown rice. The fish was flaky and scallops and shrimp were sweet and perfectly cooked. I appreciated that the server made sure I understood that it was going to be spicy which it was but not unbearably so (I like mildly spicy to medium spicy). I loved the spinach crab dip appetizer. It was creamy and hot and delicious. The hushpuppies, of you are a hushpuppy fan were a must order. The arrived hot and very crisp coating with a moist interior. They come with a honey butter which really put them over the top. My spice got the grilled shrimp with shoestring potatoes. The shrimp were grilled perfectly with just the right amount of seasoning. Reservations are recommended for peak service times. There plenty of parking in the back if the lot in front is full. read more

Ragin Reef has some of the best crab cakes in Frederick. They are full of lump crab with not too much filler. They are always busy but the service is always good. The restaurant is decorated in a seaside vibe even though it's no where near the water. With the fresh seafood they serve and the decor, you might forget for a second that you are not dining on a pier overlooking the sea somewhere. read more

The bartender Caroline was showing some superb hustle that I would definitely hire if I still had a business. She's been behind the bar for three weeks and is obviously an asset not just for her hustle but for maintaining a positive attitude during a rush that the restaurant is still training to cope with. Kudos girl The fried fish was terrific although the fries needed more time in the fryer. The sweet potato fries were excellent. The Cole slaw was delicious I even liked the tartar sauce. I had a seltzer from RAK honey lavender quite tasty. The new management is trying to offer the local products and it's the right direction. I believe this place has lots of potential and I look forward to my next visit when I hope to give more stars. read more

These folks keep doin seafood right! I had the Tortilla Poblano crusted Mahi....delicious with the right amount of kick! The salad greens were bright and full of fresh ingredients and delicious flavor! The red beans and rice come with all the main entrees and they are right on point! Spousal Unit and I have become regulars at the Reef. Date night, late night - whenever we can we wander in for a great meal. The expansion I hoped for in my last review in 2018 (has it really been that long?) has added quite a few table, so we haven't had issues getting seated. The menu is pretty unchanged over time - which is a great thing, particularly if you like crab cakes! The Crab 'no' Cakes are still plump and full of lump; they are still IMHO the absolute best crab cakes (and the absolute best crab cake value) in town. I hesitate to mention this because I don't want to start a stampede, but they offer a reduced price special one night a week (OK, I'll make you work for it), making the value even better. Over time I've eaten my way through the entire menu. There is a lot to love for anyone - unless you really have your heart set on a bloody steak. Philistine... Hope to see you there! read more

Ok for some things like fish & chips and jambalaya and the muscles. The crab cake we had last week was hot on the outside and cold on the inside. Tasted awful like it had been reheated. Light on the non hoppy beers. Please tell your servers to not wear cologne and perfume...many diners can't go out who have toxic reactions and disabilities related to them that make it hard enough to sit close to others...but the wait staff you can control to knock it off. It's late Thursday night and I can't sleep. I watch re-runs of Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsey. Mostly mundane and boring, but then someone takes a chance and serves him a plate of english Fish and Chips. I thought for sure he was going to tear them apart, but he unexpectedly loved them them. And that's when it sunk in. I NEED some Fish & Chips as soon as possible (I'm easily influenced). So the next day I looked into who makes the best F&C's in Frederick. The name that came up the most was Ragin' Reef. It's Frederick, so I didn't expect great British Fish & Chips locally. But I was completely proved wrong. The next day we B-Lined it to RR for some F&C with minimal expectations. The restaurant tables were full so we had to sit at the bar, which at first was a bummer, but ended up being a blessing. Noah was our bartender and he was absolutely AMAZING. So nice, knowledgeable , and he guided us through the menu since it was our first time there. Literally, could not have been more friendly and helpful. Fantastic guy! The Salad/vegetables arrived and, although I was skeptical at first, the tangy dressing was a perfect match for the salad. Next came the Entrées. The Fish Tacos were good. I feel like the fish needs much more seasoning and less tomatoes, but overall enjoyable. The star of the show was the Fish & Chips. Absolutely awesome! The fish was crispy, perfectly seasoned. and piping hot. 10/10!! And I lived in London for a while so I know a great F&C when I taste it. Could not have been better. Even the Tartar sauce was amazing (I took extra home). Yes, I wish the chips were bigger like in the UK instead of French fries, but come on - it's all about the fish, really. And they even had Malt Vinegar!! YES!! Definitely check out Ragin' Reef. It's food and service lives up to it's high ratings. Love this place and will definitely be back. read more

So my wife loved her Scallops. Said they were great. I had the Cream of Crab Soup and the Fish and Chips. I thought the Cream of Crab Soup needed more crab in it, specifically a few pieces of lump crabmeat. In general it was okay, but heavy on the cream and light on the crab. The Fish and Chips were served hot, but they were extremely greasy, and I ate less than half of my serving because of the very greasy texture. I have had much better. So for my wife it was great, but I was pretty disappointed. And I have been throne voting to come here again. Oh well, I guess I will have the Scallops next time. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted cheerfully. Alex confirmed the size of our party and sat us. This was an early Saturday afternoon. Alex provided great eye contact and made us feel welcome. We ordered non alcoholic drinks, then asked about the fresh oysters, which we ordered. After a few minutes, we were ready to order our entrees. Based on some of our exclusions, Alex asked if we wanted a gluten free entrees. We did for one entrée, so Alex informed us how the crab cake would be different. The half dozen oysters were well presented and very fresh tasting. Both the Crab "no" Cake Salad and the Stuffed Shrimp entrees were also very well presented. The crabcake? 12/10 pure jumbo lump melt in your mouth.. the fries they have here are my favorite the perfect shoe string fries. My wife got a wicked chicken pasta and we were blown away at the freshness and overall quality, the chicken tenders were perfect crispy golden perfection, oh let's not forget the cream of crab soup...torch, it was delicious... Wonderful food and service! I haven't had a bad dish there yet. The fried calamari appetizer is wonderful, their raw oysters are always fresh and clean (no sand!), and the drinks are deceptively strong. I had the tortilla and poblano flounder recently and it was very flavorful and cooked perfectly. They have the some of the best crab cakes in MD - big pieces of crab without all the filler. When the stuffed cod is on the menu, it's a must try. I only deducted a star because they forgot to add the vinaigrette that came with the dish, the green beans could have used some seasoning & butter, and the portion of rice and beans could be more. Went for weekday dinner. I got bunch of small plates (mussels, clam chowder, side order of deep fried cods) and hush puppies for the table. My husband got wicked chicken pasta as he is not a seafood person. Everything was great, especially hush puppies with a honey butter! So good! They had a great selection of beers on draft. First, we've been coming to the Ragin Reef for several years. They are now under another management. The service was attentive and nervous. We ordered the Calamari which was over breaded and tough. Then I ordered the Reef Basket with fried Oysters. They delivered a dozen raw oysters. Sent them back and they gave me what I ordered again over breaded but okay. My wife had the Reef Basket with the flounder, and she said it was okay and not great. We had a group with over Christmas the meals were poor. This was our first time back. We won't return until there's a management change. read more

First time dining here. Food was great! We had hush puppies and wicked mussels for appetizer. Both were excellent. The broth the mussels are cooked in is so delicious that we took the leftover home. Crab cakes were moist and terrific but the star of the meal was the red beans and rice. Just enough beans and seasoning to not overpower the rice and not soupy at all. Mojitos were good too! We got here around 5 on a Saturday evening. The host mentioned they had several reservations for 6 pm but sat us right away. They did get pretty busy as it got closer to 6, so either make reservations or get there early. Our waitress greeted us and was amazing the entire time. She made sure to answer any questions I had. I was really craving a crab cake, so I had to they theirs. We ordered some drinks, Orange Crush and old fashioned, which were okay. I had to get the hush puppies. When they arrived, they were super hot and fresh. I cut it in half, and it was crispy yet soft on the inside. Topped with their butter, it was perfection! Then our entrees came out. The crab cake was delicious. I dont know what kind of tartar sauce they use, but it was the perfect addition. I'm pretty picky with Coleslaw, but their's was super yummy. My husband got the stuffed shrimp and didn't leave one crumb behind. We even opted for dessert and ordered the banana cheesecake. Kinda sounds weird, but it was so good and creamy. Love most of the food, the service & the ambiance. Lots of locals go here. They have yummy mixed drinks. Their mussels are super good. I've often taken home the sauce to use in breakfast or dinner the following day. I find the atmosphere to be relaxing. It's a good place to go either with a group or alone. There was an outdoor patio during Covid which many of us enjoyed. The only complaint I have is with the fried calamari. It's just not tasty or cooked properly. The sauce is boring. read more

Okay wow! The food here is sooooo delicious. I love seafood but sometimes, some places just don't do very great oysters, and these oysters are so delicious!!! I wish we had more than a dozen. The crab cake was also very delicious, they also provide old bay seasoning so i dumped a lot seasoning (after the picture was taken). The lobster and spinach dip was also very good, they added some lobster chunks. And the hushpuppies were delicious and super fresh and crispy too. Service here is exceptional, they always checked up on us, was very kind, and made sure we were doing well. The place is kind of small but that is alright, (we came in at 4-5 pm on a Saturday) and it was not crowded at all. Will definitely come back here and try their key lime pie next. read more

Did you know Frederick, MD was voted one of the coolest towns in the America? I visited on one of those beautifully, cool Summer days and it was perfect. Plenty of outdoor seating and the restaurant was not too busy. Ordered: crab cake and sweet potato fries. The crab cake was very good, with very little filler but entirely on the small side for the price (~$22). I would have preferred a larger size for the price. We tried the Raging Reef for the first time last night, and we really liked it. The food was all very tasty, and not really overpriced for the most part. The only caveat to that was the "Lobster & Spinach Queso." It had spinach in it, but not much in the way of lobster. For $13 I expected more chunks of something, as well as a somewhat deeper bowl of it. But it was tasty like everything else. We got the Ragin' Jambalaya, which was great, and also the Ragin' Tacos, one order with shrimp and one with fish. Both were great. Additionally, we got an order of the Hush Puppies with their whipped honey butter, and for dessert we got a hot fudge brownie with vanilla ice cream. Very tasty as well. I came with my friend as we were looking for seafood one afternoon. And we didn't want a chain restaurant. This place was highly rated by fellow Yelpers, so off we went to Ragin' Reef. The restaurant has a parking spaces out front, as it's not directly in the "downtown" district. I was pleased by the cleanliness and tastefully simple decor. A bottle of hand sanitizer is on every table. Our waitress was very sweet and explained all meal options. Only problem was she would get busy and it was hard getting her to come over after the orders were taken. Hush puppies were very fresh. I got the Crab "No Cake" salad which was very good. My friend's cod and chicken tenders (Pick 2) were to her liking as well. We will return and hopefully get to try outdoor seating. read more
