Located very centrally to downtown Frederick there is street parking as well as a garage right behind. The interior is cute, it really does look like a cellar with stone and wood accents. The menu had some appetizing looking choices. The salmon was very good and so was the risotto. The brisket nachos were also tasty. My mother enjoyed the French dip. Service was fast and attentive! Came here last night for their weekly Tuesday night free comedy (open mic) show (8pm) to perform standup there for the first time and watch other comics perform. You go down the steps into a basement (hence the name) to get inside, plenty of free street parking right outside. Loved the cozy intimate atmosphere which makes it easy to meet folks. The two lovely ladies bartending were wonderful- friendly, polite and prompt with the service. To my pleasant surprise they actually had henny there. Didn't get to try the food yet but sure will sometime, heard it was good. Cocktail menu was decent. Just know on show nights they close the kitchen a little earlier. Will deff be back! read more

The cellar Door lies at the bottom of a set of stairs, literally in the cellar of a building. The stairs are not easy to use, but the effort is worth it. 1. The decor is historical in nature, which is cool. 2. The music honestly was a bit too loud for me 3. I will say that the mushroom toast, is out of this world 4. We were there on burger night - the burger was declared amazing. 5. the Fish and Chicps was ok, the fish a bit dry and the fries were really salty. Then desert arrived. Wow. The Creme Brulee was stunning, and the cheesecake was produced amazingly. The food quality was high. Both orders of Fries were well a lot to salty. Evyerhthing was perfect. We get seated and order apps and drinks. She takes my licence and walks away to a room for about 5 minutes or so. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and after giving the bartender my license she took it to the back for literally 10 min. when she came back she looked me dead in the eye (like i was the one in the wrong here) and told me they couldn't except my valid, non expired drivers license at their establishment and couldn't give me a single reason why. so we had to leave. it felt 110% discriminatory. i've gone to quite a few bars in the last 4 years and i have never had this happen to me. i'm still trying to figure out what it was about me the bartender didn't like because there's absolutely no way it had anything to do with my id lmao. I've visited this place 3 times. First time the food was great, service was great, but I had an issue with my bill. I paid with my card and left a cash tip. When I checked my bank transactions I noticed the amount was different than what I signed for. I called and spoke with the manager and she informed me that because they did not have my receipt at the end of the night so they automatically chose a tip amount and added it to my bill. The manager did offer a refund or an in store credit. The second time there were no issues I came and spent the in store credit. The third time I convinced a group of friends to come to enjoy the food and karaoke. I was very embarrassed immediately as I had spoken so highly of the place and we were immediately disappointed starting with the drinks. We sent drinks back several times because the bartender couldn't get it right and the manager had to make it herself. The appetizer was great but the actual meal was dry. So our Sunday night was filled with some drinks, good food, and comedy. I'm giving this place a 4 stars because the comedians knocked it out of the park. The last guy who dealt with some hecklers was amazing. So deadpan and ruthless. For drinks, I got a cider mimosa and it was tasty. Yummmmmm. My friends and I visited this place after we had a girls day at a nearby winery. We were sat immediately and the staff was so polite. We asked our server for suggestions and she definitely delivered . I wish I could remember her name. The food was so flavorful. It was a good atmosphere dancing with everyone..... then all of the sudden someone GRABS my arm and says "you need to leave." The Cellar Door might remind you of a bar and restaurant from college but the food is actually decent. I came here for dinner last night for Restaurant Week, $30 for a 3 course meal? Unbeatable. Appetizer: Crab bites with corn relish and remolade sauce. The bites had a crunch to it and meaty in the middle. The remolade sauce complemented the crab bites but the corn relish would have been better served warm than cold. Main Course: Scallop adobo with mushroom and sweet soy reduction served with garlic rice and asparagus. Pan seared scallops and mushrooms are my absolute favorite so it only made sense to order this. They were cooked perfectly and the sauce had a sweet and savory taste to it. The garlic rice wasn't too overpowering in the palate which was delightful. I always prefer my asparagus crisp and tender but it was over cooked and wasn't seasoned very well. Dessert: Chocolate mousse. You can't go wrong with chocolate! It wasn't too sweet and perfectly paired with a few pieces of raspberries. I told my friend that it would've been nice if the cup holding the mousse was an actual chocolate and sure enough it was! I broke the cup with my spoon and when I found out it was chocolate I was so excited. Our server Eric was nice enough to give my friend an extra chocolate cup! It was also incredibly noisy even though they were only a few patrons in the place including us. It's kind of hidden away on the corner of Church and Market. They had live music on the night I went and the duo was pretty good. The lounge area itself is on the small side. Not many places to sit and most of the seats are on a ledge and somewhat uncomfortable. I'm told the bartender is quite good and I believe it. But I asked what kind of martinis they had and so he asked, what kind do you like? I said I don't like anything too sweet and that my favorite martini is a dirty vodka martini I was just in the mood for something different. So he turned to make me something and he ended up making me a chocolate-vanilla martini! I tried it and it was delicious (tasted like chocolate milk) but I ended up not finishing it. Too sweet. I don't know why he would have made that after I said I don't like anything too sweet... (???) What a cute little restaurant/bar! I love that it's in a cellar off the main drag in historic downtown Frederick. Come here for the cocktails, stay for the food. The enforcer was my drink of choice for the evening. Smokey, strong but not overpowering and very smooth. A "mans" drink that everyone can enjoy. We mainly got small plates here, but the hummus was probably my favorite. Definitely a good option for a full dinner or apps and drinks. I had tickets to the a concert at the Weinberg Center a block away on a Friday night. If you have tickets for a concert at Weinberg, there are a many restaurants in downtown Frederick that offer a discount on meals. They typically range from 10-15% off the entire meal or a free appetizer with purchase of 2 entrees. Since I rolled solo, I opted for The Cellar Door since they had a 15% off entire meal discount as opposed to 2 entree discount. The bar is a great mix of homey, unpretentious, but trendy. The decor is the same. They have lounge type seating where there are decorative pillows, however it is not so trendy that it still feels very laid back. Decent music. Bar tenders are quick and seasoned. I went around 5:30. It was a great after-work crowd, not too crowded but could tell that it was a spot people like. Crowd begins to pick up around 7. I left around 7:30. Since they have a DJ on Friday nights at 10:30, I imagine it probably gets pretty crowded after happy hour. I was surprised to learn that they also host comedy shows on Sundays with a small cover - I will back to check one out. I think it would be a nice place to host a birthday party for a small group of friends. Patrons are open, chill, and friendly. A place where it's easy to strike up a conversation. One patron mentioned that this is one of the few bars in Frederick that has decent music. They have $5 house cocktails during happy hour...roughly 50% of the actual price. I tried the THIN MINT MARTINI. It was sooooo good. Presentation wise, it could use some work. But it's taste that ultimately counts. I think this is going to be a favorite cocktail of mine going forward. There is enough alcohol in it to get a nice buzz. When I came here, I was not really looking for a quality meal. Just an easy, quick bite prior to the show. However, the food actually surpassed my expectations. The menu initially looks standard of the mill. But from what I gather, they put their own spin on the standard of the mill food. It was recommended by the bar tender to try the FISH TACOS, CHICKEN CHESAPEAKE, or the CRAB CAKE SANDWICH. There were two other recommendations made, but unfortunately, I cannot remember what they were. The chicken chesapeake and crab cake sandwiches are 2 of the 6 signature sandwiches they offer. The CHICKEN CHESAPEAKE is grilled chicken, crab dip, bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomato on ciabatta roll. I am not for one who cares for this trend in American food where they mix different types of food into one (i.e. mac and cheese pizza, shrimp-stuffed crab, shrimp scampi lasagna, etc..). It all sounds gluttonous and gross. So I usually wouldn't be brave enough to try a sandwich with both grilled chicken, crab dip, and bacon. The bar tender emphasized how delicious it was so I dove in. I was glad I did! Although I probably now weigh the size of a whale, THE CHICKEN CHESAPEAKE was just mouth watering! Yes to the hell yes! I was full after eating the first half but couldn't keep myself from scarfing down the second half. The fries that came with it, however, were basic and over-salted....Next time, I'll request unsalted fries and just salt them on my own. I have lived in Frederick for only 2 years and am just getting out in about to explore my fairly new hood (as most of those I know I usually meet up with in Baltimore or DC). So far, so great! I really enjoyed this place. The only reason for the 4 star instead of 5 is for the uncomfortable seating. I don't know what is about the few Frederick bars I have visited thus far, but comfortable seating is not a high priority. The seating unfortunately was actually a bit painful. ********* UPDATE 12/2/2017************ Previous rating remains the same. However, I decided to visit at 10 pm on a Friday to see how it was like with the DJ. In this regard, I was not as much of a fan of the Cellar Door. There is definitely a much younger crowd that comes in at that time. The happy hour crowd clears out by then. They also stop serving food at 10 pm as well. $5.00 cover to get in at that time. I went there for "comedy" night on Feb 27. The intro host reminded the crowd three times to turn off phones and no heckling. Already serious vibes- yikes. Then the warm up guy started picking on me saying I was making everything awkward when he was trying to engage the crowd with irrelevant comments such as "first date huh." I was trying to break the ice and talk about my friend and I because these "comedians" were visibly struggling. Two comedians later and there's no material coming from any of them; since they had no original material, they decided to single me out and heckle me. When I gave it back to them and defended myself, they kicked me out of the restaurant. In retrospect, it seems they were paranoid about hecklers because the comedians were the misogynistic bullies making comments that degraded women and lesbians (their idea of comedy). Unbelievably lame and embarrassing for this establishment. Too bad- the food was pretty good and I got a free meal and drinks out of them for kicking me out! read more

After tonight I wont be coming back. We arrived for the comedy show with Eliot Chang headlining. Great performances and funny jokes the entire time. Though that didn't distract me from the fact that the hostess took our order for an appetizer and never came back with the rest of the food. After 3 acts we were wondering if they forgot us. During the acts I notcied everyone getting their entrees and drinks, meals and plates served or removed by this woman. At one point she pretty much disappeared. During the act transition I had to find another employee and ask about the food only to find out the kitchen had closed while I was being patient. That was really upsetting because we were extremely hungry. So we watched the show, trying to ignore the missing woman's blunder. But by the final act, checks were being passed out by a guy that was also taking orders earlier. $14.84 for a small cup of actually decent crab dip. It's real crab meat so whatever. We slid a $20 bill into the billfold and the he took it and never came back. Well before the lights came on he brought everyone else their change or receipt. The lights turn on, the acts are finished everyone's leaving out and we are sitting with no receipt and no change. It was awkward to be forgotten twice in one night. I mean I was the only black woman. How could you really forget me so easily. I'm here every week for comedy and I am always the only black woman. So we go to the bar again, and ask for our change and reciept. And the forgetful waiter begins to process it. The change we expected is $5.16 plus a receipt. He hands my husband $5 dollars from the register. And walks away. We are confused. We aren't rushing or barking, just asking where the actual change is. He comes by again and asked if there was a problem, and we state that we would like all the change back. He curtly replies "Really? Most people don't want 12 cents back." My response was that "Most waiters don't forget to bring a customer their change. And we aren't most people. So..." And my husband informed him "What you did is technically stealing. Thatvis illegal, you don't just tip yourself." And with that the man became red with embarassment at getting caught trying to steal 16 cents, and also for not even knowing basic math. And he drops a quarter into my husbands hand and we leave. At the top of the stairs I notice the same red man and his strangely disheveled plain clothed twin walk out and BEGIN TO FOLLOW US down the block. Behind me I hear a passive aggressive "HAVE A NICE NIGHT" being barked at our backs. Luckily for them we decided not to waste our time with banter. What a creepy and menacing way to chase down two innocent customers that asked for the most basic of service all night. Imo the establishment isnt prejudice, but the hostess and that waiter were all on something that had them sweating in a ice cold cellar. They forgot us repeatedly and the other one wanted to be confrontational by chasing us? I'm thoroughly upset the comedy was great. But not worth being chased away. read more

We went on comedy night ( every Sunday) and you have to pay $5 per person to enter but since it was our first time and we didn't know it was comedy night, the manager didn't charge us the cover ( which we appreciated) The comedy show wasn't that bad. They had about seven or eight comedians! Some were funny and some were not at all! Lol On to the food. We ordered crab dip which was really good. I ordered the crab sandwich which was good but I do recommend getting it with a side of old bay seasoning. My wife ordered the Mahi Mahi fish. It was a small portion which I was surprised since they charged like $17 for the fish. It did come with a side of asparagus. Reason for the four stars is the bread pudding. Simply put, it was horrible. It had no flavor and I felt that we were just eating bread with some syrup on top. We also ordered ice cream to make it little better, but sadly it was no better. Great dining experience - excellent food, excellent service. My wife and daughter have food allergies, so I emailed ahead of time, and the proprietor, Richard, emailed me back and assured me they could take care of us. He was right, and the waiter had a copy of the email in his pocket, and Richard stopped by as well to make sure everything was handles properly. Our waiter, Eric, was excellent- he listened, asked questions, checked with the kitchen, made sure everything was right. He was friendly without being overbearing - just right. The tomato basil soup was terrific - bold flavors, this was not a tomato soup with a hint of basil, it was bright tomato and fresh basil flavors, delicious! My daughter got the salmon (without the glaze) and LOVED it. I sampled it myself and it was excellent, flavorful and well cooked. She substituted fries for the rice pilaf and could not get enough of those either. My wife ordered the roasted beet and goat cheese salad, and added chicken for a protein. The amount of beets, cheese, and chicken were all very generous, and she enjoyed it very much. I had the steak, which was prepared just as I ordered it (medium), tender and juicy, with some authentic mashed potatoes, asparagus that had also been cooked nicely (not under or over), and a tasty sauce. My only mild disappointment was that the menu listed two sauces, an onion balsamic and a bordelaise, but I got them both combined. I love a good bordelaise sauce, and it was still good with the onion balsamic mixed in, but I would have preferred them separate (or without the onion balsamic). Nevertheless, I ate every bite and enjoyed it very much. I had a glass of Shiraz to go with it, which was also quite good - flavorful but not too peppery. I am no wine expert, but I know what I like. The atmosphere was mostly pub casual, but they clearly can do fine dining as well. I may come back sometime to hang out at the bar (I don't get the chance to do that often), and we certainly have added this to our list of great restaurants in Frederick. read more
