Somewhat nondescript location (it's on the golden mile) but the inside is super cute and the food was incredible! I got paneer biryani which was so good and my friend got mushroom masala which she loved. We also branched out and got the vegetable pakora as an appetizer and we both loved them! They had just the right amount of heat. In terms of spice level, they have no spice, mild, and not. Usually I get medium at Indian places and mild was good but not super spicy. While the food smelled great, all the protein in the curry were quite dry. The vegetable curry was the best in my opinion because the vegetables were cooked through and soft (not mushy). There are better Indian restaurant options. Garlic naan (4 slices) - great garlicky flavor, no complaints here Keema naan (4 slices) - was ok, first time getting it ever so not sure what to expect. Ordered takeout from here for a large family dinner. The owners were friendly and helpful when I picked up the order. They labeled all the dishes, so it was easy to distribute at dinner later on. We ordered a lot of things, but I only tried the stuff I ordered which were the paneer samosas and chat papri. Samosas were a decent size and tasted good. I would say the chat papri was a lot creamier / has more yogurt than I'm used to from other Indian restaurants. I ordered it as my meal, thinking it was going to be more on the dry side and not super white (I'm assuming from a lot of yogurt) and more "healthy" as I've had a lot of other versions that were different. It was just okay for me. Everyone else also enjoyed their food, so overall I'd say it was a good choice. read more

This was sooo disappointing! Went with a friend from out of town who was hankering for some Indian food. Happy to see all the "Best of" stickers on the front door. Walked in and there were two ladies dining, but several tables had dirty dishes still sitting on them. Waited a few minutes. Still no hostess or anyone paying attention to our being there. "Hello! Hello!" I called out. No one. I was about to walk into the kitchen to speak with the sari-wearing woman I saw busily cooking there when another lady finally popped out of the back. We're here for a table. She gave us a wave to go sit (our choices were limited because of all the dirty dishes and unwiped tables (this was 3 p.m., not just after a lunchtime rush). We sat down and she still didn't come up, so my friend grabbed some menus herself. Finally the hostess brought us two glasses of water and silverware, and we ordered. The good news is that the food came out right away. The mulligatawny soup was inedible because of the spices/curry. It had no body or chunks of anything in it (I make my own mulligatawny at home with chicken thighs and golden apple slices). The other travesty was the naan bread. It was neither crisp nor chewy. It seemed stale. My friend commented that it tasted as though it were store bought, sat under a heat lamp for several hours and then was sprinkled with garlic flakes. Naan bread is one of the items most of us look forward to having when choosing to eat Indian food out. The hostess never brought us more water or asked if we would like more. Her inquiry of, "How was everything?" came as she presented the check. I should add that she was pretty much on her phone the entire time she was there at the bar. She only began to clear the still standing dirty dishes right before the completion on our meal. This place needs people who will WORK and better naan bread and mulligatawny soup. They sold me expired rice pudding two days in a row! I didn't mind it the first time because I thought it was just a mistake and it was just for today, no they sold me EXPIRED rice pudding again! This tells me they don't check their foods before they serve or cook them. I went to google thinking it was normal for the rice pudding to be thick but both me and google know it's supposed to be liquid. I'm so disappointed this could cause serious health issues. read more

This place is outstanding! I stopped in here for a quick meal and was absolutely stunned with how good the food was. The bread basket was a great appetizer, but the real star of the show was the entrees - the Lamb Kadai was an amazingly spicy and delicious array of flavors, and the Chicken Tikka was a great break from all the heat. They're so cheap they couldn't even afford to give basmati rice or some decent rich with it. I've driven past this restaurant a few times while visiting Frederick and always seemed intrigued. Knowing I would be in town, I decided to finally take the plunge. Clay Oven has been rated as Best of the Best. We decided to check it out because of this rating. We were disappointed for these reasons. 1. Service was untimely. Okay, they were transparent about being short staffed. 2. They served us a dish that we hadn't ordered. After we tasted it, they came and took it away. 3. We had to ask repeatedly for water refills. 4. The tea we ordered didn't arrive until after we had finished eating, in spite of us reminding them of our order. 5. The rice intended to accompany the meal arrived midway while eating. 6. The samosas were too thick, doughy, and not sufficiently crispy . The chicken samosa was cold in the center, and it was hard to chew and tasteless. 7. Kashmiri Rogan Josh- The lamb was too chewy. 8. Shrimp Saagwala was tasty, but only had 2-3 shrimp 9. Because the rice was long in coming, we ordered Naan, which didn't have that real naan bread flavor. It tasted like warmed bread. 10. We asked for lemons for our water, and received three thin slices. 11. We ordered a vodka soda, and got a vodka tonic. Now, on the positive side, we were pleased with the following. 1. Tomato soup was wonderful 2. Sauces for each of the dishes were spot on 3. Butter chicken very good 4. Fish curry was good 5. Chana masala was good depending on whether you like cinnamon forward flavor or not. We would not have rated Clay Oven as being The Best of the Best in Frederick, and hope that the owners will up their game. There is potential here. At best, I would give them three stars. read more

We visited here recently for the first time in 15 or more years. We were the only ones eating in, everyone seemed to be picking up called-in orders. The staff were attentive, the service was comfortable, the food was delicious. The owner even came over and chatted with us for a few minutes. Came here with my friend & parents. first impression, it was clean, small, and weirdly quiet. wish there was music playing in the back or tv's around to make it feel less awkward. there wasn't even low lighting, it was super bright so felt even more awkward (bc usually quiet places have low lighting because they're meant for people to have private conversations). sat down and noticed that this place was full of non-desi people. Being a desi person myself, this is a tell-tale sign that the place probably doesn't have authentic desi food, otherwise other desi people would be there too, right? but i didn't want to judge before trying the food ordered a mutton dish which came with rice, naan, palak paneer, papadum, and a few other dishes. papad: 2/5 - personally i dont like papad, but this one felt paper thing and i avoided it like the plague palak paneer: 3/5- hard to mess up. felt like it was just microwaved. didnt really have any depth naan: 3/5 - felt old, not fresh, not like melting in your mouth mutton dish: 2/5 - again, i dont rly like mutton but usually restaurants make it pretty wellor at least try. this mutton was super hard, i couldnt even bite through it, and it felt very fatty. wont return. read more

It also barely had any flavor. The Aloo Gobi was almost inedible, it was like a mushy stew with only heat as the flavor. The garlic naan was also gross. Lunch buffet is where it's at!! Took my very Chinese parents who prefer Chinese food at all times. I wanted them to try something new so I brought them here for lunch. They loved it!! Everything so flavorful and fresh. I loved the salad and the dressings and the red pickled onions. I'm basic and love the butter chicken and tandoori chicken with naan! An inauspicious strip mall joint on the outskirts of Frederick. However, the food was quite respectable. They've got a regular Indian menu, but a few Nepali dishes as well that lean towards Chinese flavorings. I got takeout, and they were nice enough to open a few minutes early to take the order. The samosas and naan split around were fine; not special or anything as these are hard items to screw up, but worth getting. However, the rarer find was that they had chili specialties on their menu. The paneer chili was delicious, if not overly hot, and absolutely huge. I don't think I've ever ordered a restaurant paneer dish that had this much actual paneer in it. For the record, paneer is an Indian variety of full-fat cheese that is quite filling. I skipped breakfast, ate it for lunch, and find myself not at all hungry for dinner late the same night. And I only ate half of it. My fellow diners (even including the pregnant one) were similarly stuffed; food comas all around. What I'm saying is: portion size. Given the range of appealing options and ridiculous amount of food for the money, I'll be back there again. read more

I've ordered from Clay Oven many times over the last 10 years with positive experiences, for the most part. Last night, however, was my worst experience thus far. Though this isn't excusable, I'm used to Indian restaurants forgetting to include the lassi I order with almost every delivery. I get it, drinks are easy to overlook (it is disappointing to not get an item you were looking forward to though). However, this time they didn't even include the aloo (potato) paratha I ordered, and naan or paratha is a staple of most Indian meals. Therefore, no Indian bread with our meal whatsoever. The "chat papri" was absolutely terrible, like nothing I've ever had. It was a weird soup of yogurt and dried spices with a little bit of chickpeas, potatoes, and onions, and a meager bag of fried "chips" that basically amounted to a tiny crouton topping, rather than a dipping vehicle. It didn't taste good at all, so we tossed it down the garbage disposal and it smelled like rotten eggs. The butter chicken was fine and rice and samosas are always solid. I appreciate that they include tamarind sauce and green chutney with the samosas. The mulligatawny soup was lacking salt, which is pretty unusual for any Indian restaurant. I didn't like the Aloo Palak, but that may be personal preference as I expected it to be the same sauce/spinach as Palak Paneer. It was more like a Matar gravy, which is thick but not creamy. All that said, I want to support local restaurants in a particularly difficult time. But forgetting multiple items and preparing disappointing dishes makes me less inclined to order again. read more

Everything is microwaved. I went in, wasn't busy at all ordered goat biryani and they microwaved it into the plastic container so it just taste like plastic. Advice never microwave anything that has rice. Mango lassi is a pre mix so don't order it unless you want to taste artificial flavoring. Naan was okay but hard to fuck it up. Vegetable samosas are either baked or microwaved because it's soft and not fully crunchy. To sum it up there are much much better Indian restaurants and this one I can say is bad, like really bad. Also ordered for pick up went there at my time and my order wasn't even taken until I got there, took them 3 minutes to get everything out, which explains why everything is microwaved. read more

Been here a couple of times for the lunch buffet. Unfortunately, Frederick lacks Indian restaurants - drive to Harrisburg PA and you'll find a plethora of choices - so this is the only one I know about. Clay Oven does "hit the spot" when craving Indian food. But with the lack of competition, everything is predictably average. Sauces are a bit too oily for my tasting. The Buffett could use a few more vegetable options too. The people who work there are very nice and appreciate your business. read more
