Been here a couple of times for the lunch buffet. Unfortunately, Frederick lacks Indian restaurants - drive to Harrisburg PA and you'll find a plethora of choices - so this is the only one I know about. Clay Oven does "hit the spot" when craving Indian food. But with the lack of competition, everything is predictably average. Sauces are a bit too oily for my tasting. The Buffett could use a few more vegetable options too. The people who work there are very nice and appreciate your business. read more

Wonderful dinner with my wife. I have been here once before but didn't feel like writing a review. Yesterday was different. We ordered minimal food -Chicken Momos/ dumplings (not on the menu, but ask them for it) -Chicken Kadai -Garlic Naan Momos were pretty good! Dipping sauce complemented them and was unlike I have tried anywhere else. Chicken Kadai was awesome. Authentic Indian taste with less oil. The only caveat being it had thick pieces of Ginger, I would recommend them to be thin/at least julienne style. Still, the dish overall was excellent! Garlic Naan was great tasting, tasted fresh out of stone/wood fired oven. The owners were very friendly. I would be back soon and recommend others as well. read more

My wife and I went to Clay Oven in Frederick, MD today. We ordered chicken tikka and lamb curry for take out. The lamb curry was okay in my opinion. My wife loved it though. I thought the chicken tikka was great except it was chicken tandoori. I thought the chicken tikka was quite pricey i.e. 14.95 plus tax. Normally pretty good food - but the phone service on the order was so terrible I doubt I'll ever order from them again. There's another new Indian food place right across the street who delivers. Ordered over 2 hrs ago. Called 40m ago to check on the order, they said the driver was already out with the order. Called again, got hung up on, and then apparently my number blocked. Tried to call back 3 times and was immediately disconnected. Called back with another number, got through. Still said the driver is out with the delivery and just hung up on me again. I am currently making my way though Frederick's Indian spots in a quest for the best place, I have only tried one other place and I am not sure I can make a decision on which I liked more because they were both good and different. I was in the mood for some butter chicken and naan (always) so I decided to place an order online (eat24) and go pick it up. I got the butter chicken and the spicy option. They offer mild, medium, spicy or extra spicy. The spicy packed some heat! It was very flavorful but very very spicy, luckily I like spicy and can handle it so if you cant I would recommend mild or medium. There was so much chicken in the dish and it was all delicious. I also got Paneer Kulcha - Cheese Naan and it was so so good! All of this food lasted me 3 meals! I will have to go back soon and branch out and get something different. When I went in to pick up my order I saw their weekend lunch buffet, it was small but decent selection and it looked really good. I'll tell ya what my insides haven't screamed this bad since I tried Lebanese in DC. I mean to tell you it may be good to someone else but boy about 10 minutes after I signed on the line that was dotted I was white knuckles on the porcelain seat asking for forgiveness from above. I'm 230lbs of lean mass and I was doubled over, sweating like a grape in a raisin factory speaking in tongues in between courtesy flushes. The smell of Satan's breath coming from my o-ring pierced anything opaque in a three square miles and honestly I figured it'd be on Nancy Grace that night with SWAT and HAZMAT teams converging on the scene with gas masks and guns drawn. At any rate- I may not be the best person to review the food, but I can say, it went down fine- and came out with the accuracy of hitting the eye of a needle from 100yards. RIP. read more

Came here for dinner and was happy to find an Indian restaurant I really enjoyed. The place itself is a bit rundown and could use some sprucing up, but the food is great. We got the paneer chili and malak paneer and both were very tasty. The portions were good and we had plenty to take home with us. The dishes were very flavorful and had a good amount if spice and went well with the yellow rice and naan. Will definitely be back and look forward to trying the buffet. read more

A Frederick staple- consistently good carry out. Not in a particularly great area for ambiance, but the food makes up for it.

No fault on the naan or the lassi, But my mushroom masala was way over salted. The wife's vindaloo was mild. Vindaloos are supposed to be hot not mild! Chairs & tables are too small, it feels like your crammed on top of each other. More atmosphere than kabob & curry, but the food is not on the same par. read more

Awesome Indian food. Very clean, nice decor. I've been for both the buffet and regular dinner, and both experiences were positive. My only complaint is that it doesn't seem overly friendly in here. The owner isn't very talkative, and considering the place is small enough to where there doesn't really need to be a wait staff (he usually comes and takes drink orders and food orders himself), so having a more upbeat personality would be welcoming. But at the end of the day, it's all about the cuisine. And Clay Oven hits the nail on the head with that. My personal recommendation would be the Butter Chicken curry. Certainly a gem in Frederick, and I'd recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Indian food. I just hope they continue to do well considering they don't have the most desirable location in the world. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Frederick. The food is mouth watering delicious and the service is even better. My mom was cold when we were in the restaurant and the owner and his wife brought her a heater. And every time we asked for more onions, chutney, or pickle, they brought it over immediately with a smile. For the meat eaters out there, the kebabs and tandoori chicken are AMAZING! Always hot and fresh. You may go into this area with lower expectations because it's not located downtown Frederick, but the location is deceiving, and it truly is one of a kind. This was our first experience of restaurant-style Indian cuisine, and I almost wish that I didn't choose the buffet lunch. I've cooked actually Indian food at home several times, and I think I'll stick to that from now on. The best part of the meal was the nice warm naan. But the rest is forgettable. I'm usually very worldly when it comes to food, but I don't think I'll be coming back here. The buffet selections were overly greasy, slop-like, and nothing was worth coming back for seconds for. The Gulab jamun (fried cheese balls is sweet syrup) was intensely sugary. The Saag paneer was ok. The basmati rice was just that...rice. All others are not even worth mentioning. Great food, reasonable prices, attentive and friendly service - what's not to like? Unpretentious decor - great value for a delicious meal!

Let me start by saying that this review has nothing to do with food. I love their food. This has do with the experience I had trying to support them during the current crisis. We ordered through GrubHub. 15 mins after the delivery window, we gave them a call. Our GrubHub driver never showed. I check with GrubHub support, which says Clay Oven does it own deliveries. I call Clay Oven back. I get told that I'm stupid to order from GrubHub why not just call them. Why would they pay GrubHub if GrubHub isn't delivering. They say to cancel my GrubHub order, I explain that I can't since it's already been accepted by Clay Oven. They say they will send a driver. Driver shows up, an hour later complains about how he drove up from Rockville. The driver explains everything. The Frederick driver for waiter on the way isn't on duty. All in all, I get the feeling that Clay Oven does their own deliveries to keep the tip and fees to recover some of the GrubHub costs. Which is shitty to the drivers. But ultimately if you don't want GrubHub orders don't list yourself there. I don't if I'll go back, because of how the staff treated me. read more

Don't have option for zero star's.The Worst food ever , it's better to throw your money in garbage bin than eat here . Food is not worth a single penny. Ordered : Chicken tikka makhani - I was surprised to see that the Tomato Puree was added. A joke in my sub-continent. Navratan korma - It was something which could bring chaos in a cemetary. Chicken momos - It shook me to core of my soul's conscience. It must be tough for messing up the chicken. I have heard that the North Indians have vacated their ancestral villages after tasting such food. Everything was tasteless. Chicken momos were stinking and absolutley raw. Ordered the lamb and mixed grill kabob, shrimp was under cooked and the lamb was the type of processed lamb you get in a Gyro (not a cut of meat worth $18) and the veggies weren't cooked at all! No grill marks, nothing. Just warmed up. The salads were completely deconstructed, just chopped veggies separated. When I tried to call the place to complain, they hung up and then didn't answer subsequent calls! Very disappointed. read more

Weekly place for us. We Love Indian food and this is the best around. Plus the owners are awesome and so nice. They go out of there way to get to know you. Naan bread is so yummy and if you like spicy the chicken kadai is so good! It's made fresh and makes for the best leftovers the next day if you manage to not eat it all the first day. A while back Brick Oven was sold to the current owner and it's never been the same. The flavors are nowhere near as good as they were. I ordered Chicken Shahi Korma and it was absolutely horrible. I've been searching for a really good Indian restaurant in Frederick for a few years, and this as been on my 'must try' list almost that long. Sorry to say, my search continues; this was a disappointment because most of the food was so bland it had almost no flavor. I started with a masala tea, which was just lukewarm tea and milk, had NO cinnamon, cloves, ginger or ANY spices in it at all. Strike 1. I always judge a place by its mulligitawny soup - which normally has a deep complex, flavorful, rich broth. NO exaggeration, this had no taste to it at all, just like it was water and lentils. I tried adding salt and pepper and tamarind sauce 3 times, then some crumpled up papad (which had a spicy flavor to it, but it wasn't great, or hot [fresh] for that matter) but nothing helped. Strike 2. I was told the chicken momos (dumplings) would take 20-3 minutes to cook/steam (I asked-they were already made, so that's not true) but they came out right after the soup (good) and just before the main course (bad), which then got slightly cold while I ate 1/2 the plate of momos (which was a generous serving size). They were OK, but I used the entire chutney dish of tamarind on them to perk it up. In their defense, they came with a tasty tomato chutney, but it was a little too hot for me. (Let me be clear- I like spices, and esp. complex Indian flavors, I just can't handle hot peppers.) I ordered a Taj beer to soothe my tongue after that, but it was the big bottle, so I only finished half before I left. My main dish was a Combo #2- samosa (1 small), tandoori chicken (2 small pieces), a platter of lamb biryani, a small bowl of navaratan korma (fresh veggies in a thick rich cream sauce- this was actually very good, wish there was more), and 1 hot fresh naan, which I had asked to be garlic but did not smell or taste garlicky at all. The samosa was OK, pretty nondescript (I like the potatoes chunky, not mashed, but that's just personal preference), but the tandoori chicken was a waste- not only bland, but all dried out and cold (also got a mouthful of bones the first bite.) This was strike 3, along with the fact that the lamb in the biryani (which was otherwise pretty tasty, with nuts- but no raisins, as promised) was WAY overcooked, dried out and chewy. I know some people around here tend to like meat well-done, but that's not the way it's supposed to be; it is usually served no more than medium (just pink in the center), so it retains its juicy tenderness. I was never asked how I liked anything; so I, like the food, could have been ignored like I/it wasn't even there, and no one would have noticed. Sad. The rice and momos were better as leftovers, but that was it. read more

A friend and I dined in and the staff were so pleasant and helpful. They made excellent recommendations and were patient with us. They knew we had somewhere to be and ensured we got our meals timely. What isn't there to love about the food? I usually get the Lamb Kadai or Lamb Vandaloo. Flavorful with a great kick (I like my food extra spicy - they have no problem kicking it up a notch for me). "You should put this on Yelp" - the 10 year old "Or Pinterest or Twitter" - the 9 year old Silence (naan coma) - the 3 year old Out of the mouths of babes. This place is off the chart in terms of taste, quantity of food, service, and cleanliness. We came here after being cooped up for 3 days because of Hurricane Sandy. After visiting our favorite place (the library), I drove down Route 40 and asked the kids what were they in the mood for. As we pointed out the different restaurants, I spoke about Indian food at the Clay Oven and whole car got excited. Especially the 10 year old. She hates anything with spice or flavor so I'm surprised she's highly animated about Indian food. We enter and it's a cozy restaurant. Small but clean. No television with Bollywood movies, like the MoCo trend for Indian restaurants. The menu was varied, but we had a group goal: butter chicken. The server told us there were 2 kinds of butter chicken (!) and if we want we could have both to test them out. I didn't hear what the differences were, but I didn't really care. We greedily said yes. We also ordered lots of naan. Our food was out pretty quickly, which was nice. The butter chicken came in two silver bowls (for the 2 different types) and another silver bowl for the rice. One butter chicken bowl looks like your standard dish, the other had cilantro and almonds. The naan was in a basket. The server was attentive and I liked that. Not overbearing or lots of conversation, but watchful of how much food we ate, if we needed water, things like that. The 3 year old only wanted the naan. No rice. No chicken. Just naan. And while she would eat, she would quietly zone out until she realized she was almost done with the bread and she would ask for more. This process repeated itself. It was magical. The 9 year old was moderate with her butter chicken and naan consumption, but she thoroughly enjoyed herself. The 10 year old acted as though there was a butter chicken shortage and we would never see it again. I even said as much and she slightly paused and said "But it's wonderful and it tastes so good". And resumed eating. Another staff member refilled our rice bowl and offered chocolate to those who were finished. I couldn't think to eat anything else after all that food, but it was a nice gesture. All in all, a wonderful and delicious meal, my kids were happy, I was happy and we all want to go back again. read more

Damn. The Clay Oven lunch buffet can't be beat. I was beginning to feel a might peckish before Clay Oven came to the rescue. They have tons of options for vegetarians, my favorite of which is the Saag. The Naan is fresh and hot and goes great dipped into a hot steamy pile of mattar paneer and Dal makhani. I washed it all down with a fresh glass of Guava juice which was excellent. The staff is friendly and attentive and usually recognize me when I come in. Very affordable lunch option and great for those of us with large appetites. My only criticism is even though I was full, I had to go back for another plate! Great spot - CASE CLOSED! read more

Clay Oven is the real deal. Great Indian food, with moderate prices. This is the best Indian food in Frederick, hands down. If your new to Indian Food - you HAVE to give this place a try. I Love indian food, and have taken several 'newbies' to Clay Oven. WIthout exception, everyone has loved it. Start with the Veggie Samosa - a lightly fried pastry stuffed with potatoes and peas. Put a little of the green (spicy) chutney or brown (sweet) chutney. YUM. Bread basket - Carbs be dammed, if you only eat bread once a year - this is the place to do it. The bread is taken to another level, butter - crisp and yummy. Trust me, get it Entree - Shai Korma chicken is my favorite, and when you ask it to be spicy - its' really spicy, but the spice doesn't overwhelm the textured flavors. We have dined at Clay Oven for dinner a couple of times and we recently tried out their delivery service and all of our experiences have been great! Food wise for dinner service and delivery, it has always been fresh and delicious. Portions are sized nicely and the flavors are spot on. First time we dined here, I couldn't remember the name of what I liked, but the waiter was able to help me pin point what that was and it came out perfectly. Service has always been friendly and prompt and their restaurant is always clean. It is in a little strip mall, but don't let that deter you! Delivery only took the 20 minutes we were told it would take, but we do live fairly close to the restaurant. Make sure to check out their coupons on their website, too. read more
