My favorite dish was the the sukuti sadheko appetizer -- the goat was almost jerky like, chewy (in the best way) but still tender; and spicy. It was served with these rice crispies that looked plain, but had so much flavor on their own. It was a fun & delicious play on texture, flavor and spice. t's been a long time since I last visited Himalayan Wild Yak, and I realized I never left a review. We went for dinner this past Friday and headed straight to the bar. The bar area is big and spacious, and usually sitting at the bar means better, more attentive service. The place was mildly busy, so I expected things to run smoothly -- but that wasn't the case. Right from the start, the bartender wasn't very attentive. We had to ask multiple times just to place our order. For appetizers, we tried the Goat Buttan and the Wild Boar -- we wanted to explore some of the unique delicacies on the menu. Both dishes were interesting, and the Goat Buttan and Wild Boar were actually pretty solid. Unfortunately, the service continued to be an issue. We had to flag the bartender again just to order our entrées and even for simple water refills. We ordered the Mutton Taas and the Yak Chili. The Yak Chili was very good, but the Mutton Taas was extremely dry -- like eating cardboard -- and lacked flavor. Throughout the night, our bartender was constantly absent. More than once, we had to ask another bartender to get his attention so we could get basic service. After finishing our meal, we ordered a dessert, the Gulab Jamun. The presentation looked nothing like the picture -- more like a sloppy drop of pudding -- and the taste was just as disappointing. And again, we had to flag down another bartender because ours was nowhere to be found. Service overall was lackluster, and the tip options started at 20% with no 18% choice. For the level of service we received, 15% would have been more appropriate. I won't be returning anytime soon unless I'm specifically craving their unique delicacies -- which is once in a blue moon. read more

Every dish was so well seasoned and there wasn't a single bland bite and we tried a lot of dishes. The store is beautifully decorated and the high ceilings pull your eyes to the beautiful art of the yak that welcomes you! Warning... the yak momo is delicious but spicy... especially for young kids. My girls love dumplings but couldn't finish one. We loved the garlic naan... so delicious. We wrapped some butter chicken and rice and loved every bite. The pork belly is crisp and sweet and my kids loved it. The boar meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned with intense seasoning that was perfect! The chicken noodle kids meal was my girls' favorite dish after the butter chicken. The servers were incredibly attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. I honestly really enjoyed our meal here! The table ordered a variety of items off the menu and everyone really enjoyed their food! We sat outdoors and they had a lazy Susan in the middle of the table of family style dinner which was great. I tried the Yak Dumplings 10/10 Ordered the Yak Briyanni 10/10 The Yak Briyani takes a while to make but it's so worth it!!! You can literally share it with at least 4-5 people. It's more rice than Yak, but still really goooood! I would totally get it again!! I can't wait to go back. The only downside was the bar. We had a good Saturday night dinner at Himalayan Wild Yak. Service was good and so was the food. Our order was a compromise given the mix of people, so I expect another visit to be even better. Their momos were yummy, with the chicken ones being somewhat spicy compared to the yak momos. The Tandoor salmon was tasty, but overcooked. The chow mein with yak meat tasted really good, but the yak was overcooked and chewy, almost like a jerky. The cauliflower curry was quite tasty and a reasonable spice level, with the only drawback being more potatoes than cauliflower in it. Since this place opened we've been curious to try since we've never had this type of cuisine. We decided to try this time to finally satisfy our curiosity and sorry to say it's not our thing. We ordered two items to go so cant speak to ambiance or service. Got the Chicken momo with chutney and the Yak short ribs. The chicken momo does not come with chutney but we got it for an extra charge. Glad we did because without the chutney these dumplings are just plain old chicken dumplings. Was so excited to try the yak short ribs but upon opening it up there was a really bad smell. I imagine it must be comparable to boar taint in pork. This is our first time eating yak so I don't know if there should be a smell or not but it was horrendous. We could only eat the rice and felt bad the meat went to waste. We had a very fine meal here last weekend with a small group of friends. Guided by a Nepali friend, thenumber of diners made it possible to try a wide sample of the menu. Began with appetizers: the crispy kale chaat, chicken sekuya that was mild enough for my spice-phobic spouse, and choila pork, which was not as spicy as our Nepali friend had warned. We came in on a Wednesday night and were surprised how busy it was mid week. The service was very friendly and quick - we got drinks and most things fairly quickly. We started with chicken momos and the samosa chaat - the momos had such soft wrapper skin and the samosa chaat was fantastic- great flavors and a nice take on the dish. The homemade "bread" was unique but tasty (though I still love naan). Wine by the glass was fairly priced and I loved the smoked old fashion (one of the best ones I've had). For our mains, we shared the lamb saag, the chili yak, the butter chicken, and the roasted lamb (also two sides of naan). Some of the best buttery naan I've had in a while! The best item was definitely the lamb saag- the lamb was tender and the flavor and spice was perfect. The butter chicken was nice because the chicken was smaller pieces so it wasn't as dry and the medium spice level was just that - medium but flavorful. The chili yak was fun - almost like a jerky like consistency but a good spice profile too. We finished the meal with gulab jamun - really flavorful and fresh. Overall a great spot! read more

I only did a quick drop in to eat some of my friend's food while they were dining in ---and what I had was absolutely delicious! The portions were nice and the food was flavorful. They have committed fully to their theme of the wild yak and it makes for interesting decor as well. If you love bourbon, you will adore their Manhattan (best around) & the old fashion vines in a smoked dome. Now to food- if you have never tried Nepaleses food you are missing a treat. The appetizers are amazing- the best crispy pork belly you will find. Wild boar is yummy and chicken sekuwa is tender & flavorful. Chowmrin- really Nepalese street noodles are so good- with a slightly Smokey flavor. Momas- Nepalese dumplings are great. Don't forget main dishes - Yak, chicken & lamb dishes are terrific. Don't let the name scare you. In our opinion the best butter chicken in the area. Owner is super nice and consistently checking on tables. A great place to go out on a limb and try something new. Came here on a Friday night with some family for a late-ish dinner, around 8:15 (they close at 10). We parked in a free public garage around the corner but there's also street parking. We walked in and it there was around a 15 minute wait for a table. The decor was nice and I loved the huge yak that people could take pictures with up front. We got seated sooner than estimated and the dining room was still pretty full. We started with drinks. Got the Khukuri, Fragrant Lavender, Himalayan Mule, and a Smokey Old Fashioned. My drink was the Khukuri which was refreshing and not too strong. Loved the presentation of the Smokey Old Fashioned with the cloche. Pretty much everyone at the table loved the drinks. For food we got the Bhuteko Aalu, Crispy Pork Belly, and the Yak Momo to start. The Bhuteko Aalu was super flavorful and had a nice kick. The pork belly skin had a great crispiness. The Yak Momo were of a great size and very meaty. The sauce that came with went great. For our entrees we got two orders of Braised Short Yak Ribs and the Yak Korma. We also added on naan because it was necessary. The short yak ribs were so tender and flavorful. The korma was so creamy but had huge tender chunks of meat (lots of tender meat!). The rice was cooked perfectly and the naan was great to soak up the korma gravy. To end we got two orders of Gulab Jamun which was a great sweet finisher to the meal. I tried Himalayan Wild Yak for the first time for a late lunch with a friend yesterday and it was delicious! We shared the yak momos, grilled wild boar and yak biryani. Everything was wonderful and the sauces that came with the momos and boar were super good. The biryani was star of the meal. It was so flavorful and the yak meat was so tender it fell apart when we touched it with our forks. It was also a ton of food and we took home leftovers for days. Located isn't the Brambleton shopping center, next to Regak cinemas lies a little place called Himalayan Yak. I'll get straight to the point: I ordered the Yak Biryani with a friend and damn was this such an authentic and delicious selection. Yak, basically a super rare, mountain cow, is 96% lean meat and is known for having beneficial components such as extremely low levels of palmitic acid and saturated fats. Interesting fact I learned here was that even the blood of Yak was used as medicine to the mountain people in the mountains of Nepal, Tibet, and Mongolia. This restaurant itself specializes in Nepalese cuisine but also features Indian dishes as well to the community. I love having the feeling of trying a different culture as I have been to quite a few Asian countries yet have not been to Nepal. The napkins are made of Dhaka cloth which is a national Nepalese handmade fabric and the traditional rice bread that is served complimentary, known as Selroti, was a nice touch as well. We also were served a complimentary salad called Crispy Kale Chat. It was served with a nice yogurt sauce and very much appreciated as we waited for our baked Yak served with tons of basmati rice. The service was on point and the Yak had a very similar taste to bison. You could even tear the meat apart without your knife and that tenderness was so welcomed by my taste buds. I walked in there were two gentleman serving the main areas and working the bar area. The gentlemen were kind and polite. The restaurant appears clean there are TVs on in the background to watch movies (they played the Beekeeper). The food did not take long to come out but everything was fresh and delicious! If you really like Kale then get the kale salad, I love the presentation and the flavors but I think I don't like Kale as much as I though I did, the flavors were really interesting but I just got it because I seen the reviews. Despite me not liking the salad the lady next to me appeared to love it so don't take my word for it on the salad I recommend trying it and see if you like it. So, I came here with family. It was my parent's anniversary -- certainly a momentous occasion to celebrate. I had heard of the Yak restaurant, and seen it at many a passing glance. Decided to finally bite the bullet and try it out, and see if the hype was justified or not. Location is prime -- Himalayan Yak is at the heart of the Brambleton Plaza. Lots of green grass, open space, and the nearby Brambleton Park within walking distance, is a solid place to go dog-walking or just admire the scenery at. The Yak serves traditional Nepalese/Himalayan food. Seated inside. The cocktails menu is attached. For drinks, I had the Smokey Old Fashioned, which was aged bourbon maple; we also had the Himalayan Mule, which is a bit on the sweeter side, and tastes like margarita. My drink, the Ol' Smokey, came in a steamed decanter as pictured. It was a novel experience when lifting it, similar to unwrapping a gift. I enjoyed the taste, which was deep, rich, and aged. It was a sharp and distinguished taste. I would recommend sipping it alongside a dish, perhaps after spooning (and swallowing) a bite -- that way, it elevates the taste and leaves a rich, rather tantalizing buzz in your mouth, which heightens appreciation and if nothing else, makes things more interesting. For entrees, our table had the Pork Belly, and the Yak Biriyana. The donut-shaped bread arrived first, and was on the house. A complimentary appetizer -- similar to free bread at some sit-down American steakhouses, for comparison. It was pure bread though, slightly sweetened -- and came with a pickled, spicy sauce for dipping purposes. It tasted rather spot on, and was good for the price (nothing). The Pork Belly arrived next, perfectly caramelized and slightly sweet-tasting. It came with some fatty meat on it, and I had to cut part of that (the pure fat) out, as I'm not a fan of packing on weight if it can be avoided. I still consumed too much fat by myself, though. I ultimately preferred the pork belly variant that most Korean BBQ spots have, though. Lastly came the Yak Biriyani. Lot of meat, good solid protein. Consistently less fat than the Pork Belly, which is props to it. On the downside, there was not a whole lotta great taste going for it, and it rather tasted like goat to be perfectly honest. However, alongside the rice it was good, and was filling at the least. Still a solid hitter, but far from a home run. On a closing note, be sure to check the portions on the dishes. An altogether common mistake is to order one dish for each person in the party. Instead, be sure to check with the serving person about how many each dish feeds, so that you have a good idea going into it. All in all, decent food, and generous portions. I am rating up slightly due to the location, convenience, quality of service, and also the fact that it was a special occasion which was handled altogether well. I recommend stopping by if you find yourself in Brambleton or the nearby area, and need some authentic (Nepalese and Yak) cuisine to whet your appetite. read more

I had no idea what to expect from a Nepalese restaurant, but the name drew me to this place and I was intrigued with what they had to offer. We went for an early dinner on Saturday night and had no trouble getting a seat. We asked the waiter for some recommendations and she pointed us to the Nepali set meal where you get a variety of different curries and get to select which protein you'd like (we opted for the fish curry) and the Yak Momo's (dumplings). Both turned out to be great selections! The dumplings were tasty and the Nepali set meal was delicious. I really loved the variety of curry flavors and it was a good mix of both vegetables and protein. Prices were both reasonable and comparable to the portion sizes for the area. I'd definitely recommend this spot if you want to try out something new. The place did get a lot busier when we left, so try to come for an earlier dinner or later lunch if possible. Yakitty Yak, we'll be back. While staying with our brother in Aldie, VA. He wanted to introduce us to this place. I'm glad he did. My only experience with Nepalese food was the Yak and Yeti in Carlisle, PA. The servers at his place were great. They were present and attentive. We started with several appetizers - all of which were great. And I warn you these can fill you up, so one (or two) is plenty. I ordered the Wild Boar (Texas free-range hog), which was very good. It tasted great (gingery rosemary) and was presented with two smear of red and orange sauces. I also tasted the chix lo mein - small bowl of street noodles - and orange honey glazed pork belly. The impressionable thing about the latter was the size of the pork belly. We were so full from the apps, but we managed with some very good entrees. The chana masala (chickpea curry), palak paneer (spinach in cream butter), and tandoori chicken, were all good. Let's just say we were all full and happy by the end of the night. This place has a happy hour from 3-7p.m. in their bar and lounge area. I wasn't too impressed with their smoked old fashioned. The presentation was nice, but the taste was lacking. Don't walk by this spot - run through the doors! The food is absolutely outstanding! Immediately upon walking in the door the wonderful smell of spices and smoke tempted me. My friend was already seated and there was a small rice appetizer waiting for us. We opted to both order a smoked old fashioned, which came out covered under a dome and swirling with smoke. It was amazing to watch the smoke swirl around and we left it to get nice and smokey! We ended up ordering 2 of these and they were some of the best old fashions we have had in the NOVA area. The food was great and everything had the perfect amount of spice, aroma, and was a perfect temperature. The garlic naan was a delicious option and went well with each item we ordered. The yak momos were an excellent choice and the yak tasted great. They were housemade and the shell was perfectly chewy and steamed. The meat filling was cooked to perfection. The Brussel sprouts were suprisingly tasty. The wild boar was my favorite and I liked pairing it with the naan. The marinade was perfectly seasoned. Pork belly was perfectly crispy and thick cut. We asked what desert they were known for (can't remember the name) but it was a milk that had been reduced for about 8 hours. This Nepalese restaurant is great, especially if you are an adventurous meat eater. My friend and I specifically went to Ashburn to eat here based on Tom Sietsema's review and the opportunity for me to try yak and it was absolutely worth the trip. The restaurant is spacious, with plenty of spaced-out tables with tablecloths and easy to carry on a conversation. Himalayan Wild Yak's service was outstanding, one of the three best customer service experiences I have had this year at a sit-down restaurant (out of over 60 restaurants). We were seated immediately and our orders were taken quickly after the perfect amount of time to review our menus. Our server even suggested the option to have a half/half order for our momos (vegetarian and yak) which we didn't even know was an option (and much appreciated). Himalayan Wild Yak also gave us a complementary fried ring with a pickled vegetable that was extremely delicious. Our server also gave me great recommendations for my main. All dishes came out in a timely manner. This was above and beyond service, the kind of service that I was happy to give a 20 percent tip for instead of feeling obligated. My friend ordered the veggie momos and the dal with yak butter, while I got the yak momos and the yak chili over fried rice. I had a chance to try my friend's dishes, which were OK but could have been better. The veggie momos had nice spice and had an excellent sauce (same as the yak) but needed more flavor. By contrast, the yak momos were amazing. The yak was perfectly cooked and the fat and flavor was outstanding-a must-order for meat eaters. The best part of the dal was the yak butter, which I could taste and has a subtle smoky flavor; otherwise the dish needed way more spice and flavor. My yak chili was good overall-the yak was cooked in a delicious jerky style with a sweet-spicy sauce. However, I wish there was more yak meat and less rice as the proportions were way off. To top everything off, our meal was extremely affordable for what we got-$30 including tax and tip. There was also enough leftover food for another meal. A unique experience with the yak, overall good food, and a great experience combine to make Himalayan Wild Yak a must-try. I saw this place mentioned in a news article (think it was either in The New York Times or The Washington Post?), and the writer highly recommended it. I'd never had yak, so I thought I'd give it a shot to see if it lived up to the hype from the article. I got the yak korma...and it was amazing. The korma was easily the best I've had from a restaurant: the flavor was wonderful; the spice level was just right; and the consistency and texture were spot-on. After ordering and tasting it, I'm converted to yak. I'll still often do my default of paneer, but yak has supplanted beef in my meat hierarchy. It's nice to know that yaks have a much smaller climate impact than cows by virtue of requiring less pasture, more efficiently using energy, and excreting less methane. I ordered carryout, so I can't really comment on the ambiance beyond the brief time I was there to get my order. The eating area looked well-appointed and comfortable. Rocky the Yak was a sight to behold! The gentleman who welcomed me and who retrieved my order was very courteous and professional. Rocky was silent but majestic. Service was excellent, our server provided great recommendations and was very tentative. The chicken momo, noodles and boar appetizers were delectable and so delicious! We ordered butter chicken, spicy goat curry, crispy goat, tandoori chicken, garlic naan, and crispy brussel sprouts.... WOW! So much flavor, and so much food. Cocktails were sorta pricey, but overall really good! We loved the khukuri and mango lassi overall. Those were the two top favorites after trying 6 varieties. You really need to know what to order to really appreciate this restaurant. My husband likes their pork belly and yak Momo. I enjoy their butter chicken, biryani, etc. but every time I go there, hands-down, you have to order the yak Momo. And my kids love their lo mein noodle... Even as an adult sometimes I crave their lo mein more than a Chinese ones. Their lo mein is similar to Chinese yet slightly different. read more
