Came by for Dim Sum the other day and it was a decent experience. Tai Pan Dim Sum Bakery features an array of Cantonese-style dim sum. Credit card payment is available with a 3% surcharge. Favorite here include the beef chow fun, which comes as a gigantic portion. The eggplant and shrimp taste or their green pepper shrimp paste are both great hits. Staff can be curt and love asking if there is anything else, as a way of upsell. Staff is usually wearing gloves and some opt to wear a mask.

I'm not sure why there are so many bad reviews about service. Might be because we came at a time when it wasn't so busy. We came here on a weekday morning, before the lunch rush. We split the #4 meal combo which includes the ha cheung fun, siu mai, lo bak go, and congee (we got the preserved egg and pork). We also got the fried taro dumplings. There was one other person in line with us. I ordered in Cantonese and thought service was pretty typical of a Chinese takeout spot. Prices are very affordable and decent. There is no seating, so we ate in the trunk of my car. Everything was piping hot and delicious!

soymilk, youtiao, meat baozi bun
Annie K.

Stopped by around lunchtime on a weekday to grab some soybean milk, youtiao, and a meat bun. Going in was a bit overwhelming--labels aren't clear, English translations don't really make sense, and the display windows were greasy/dirty so it's hard to see what's even available. Felt a little rushed and had to raise my voice over the tall counters. Communication was tricky since they mainly spoke Cantonese and English wasn't great. I kind of just guessed what I was getting after a few back-and-forths. Pricing was a little confusing too. That said, the food was tasty. The baozi buns were surprisingly juicy and actually filled with meat rather than mostly dough--pleasantly surprised! Would definitely get again. Overall: 7.8/10. Has lot of potential--just could use better organization, clearer displays, and more English-friendly service.

Ammonia smell from taro puffs and sour/ rotten chicken feet
May Y.

Don't go.. disgusting- chicken feet smelled and tasted sour/ rotten - they must have put old ones out - it was around 10:15 am. The taro puffs- smells and taste of heavy ammonia - I can't believe they make and sell this stuff.. everything else except the bakery items is garbage.

Wow, another negative experience... See failed Tasty Donut Yelp Review (1 Star). Left your neighbor upset but still wanted to support a local business since I was here. Another fail. Quality/Quantity - Shrimp Dumpling. Xiu Mai. Seafood Shumai. Shark Fin Dumpling. The good news is that everyone enjoyed all the dim sum. A few pieces had non edible parts like fat and ligament. Overall, good flavors. All were of decent quality and good sizes. Lunch meals also available, see pictures. Atmosphere - Small local business (well 10 locations). Take-away only. Plenty of mall parking. Open 7 days a week from 8am or 8:30am to 6:30pm. Service - Another failure (see Tasty Donut Yelp Review)... After both businesses today failed with basic service at this mall, it discouraged me to even come back here. But I can't let these two businesses ruin it for everyone else in this mall. The lady rolled her eyes when I asked to have forks instead of chopsticks. Can you believe that? She actually rolled her eyes. She was not the friendliest person to begin with, but rolling your eyes?!?! Did you not think that I was NOT going to see that? Obviously, she did not care. As I left, I looked up your Yelp rating of 3 stars and now I understand. Just read all the recent reviews and you have so many complaints about service... Price - $5.30 an order; $23.19. Overpriced for the service I received. And for the lack of basic service. 3% surcharge with credit card; I paid cash. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 2000. You might want to work on your customer service skills. And you have 10 locations?!?! With this type of service? Next time I come to this mall, I will have extremely low expectations to not be surprised...

I have been coming here for years and always love their fish porridge. It is so good and satisfying. Their dim sum is great for to-go orders with solid options for a quick meal at home. They also offer combos which I think are a great deal. You can get a variety of items in smaller quantities which is perfect if you want to try different things instead of committing to the usual three-piece orders. There is no seating here but parking is convenient since it is located inside a plaza.

Sesame ball
Denise L.

Their sesame balls are huge and not oily like other places, very good! However, their customer service could be a little better. Stood around for awhile until someone finally took my order and as I didn't have cash, they seemed a bit annoyed even though there is a credit card fee.

Small porridge

I've been coming here for about 6 years now, and I keep coming back because of the convenience and comfort of the food. The Siu Mai has gotten a bit smaller over the years, but they're still packed with lots of meat. As everyone's saying, the service isn't great, but we're there for the food at the end of the day. There also usually is a line, so they'll be going through customers quite quickly. I enjoy the preserved egg porridge and Siu Mai the most.

Receipt

Beware, check your receipt. Go there early in the morning, no other customer and not busy at all. After ordering not too many items, the cashier lady told me the total is $38.96, I was a bit surprised by it but still paid it in full. When I got the receipt, turn out the lady accidentally double count the soy milk and bread stick set, therefore, I asked for a refund. To food is fair and acceptable but I may not go back again.

6/19 Prices have gone up since the last visit. I still will come from time to time to get my dimsum fast food style fix, but at some point, it will be the same price as restaurants. I really enjoy all their items here as they are always fresh and the portions are huge. These ladies do not skimp you out. This particular day, there was only one lady taking orders so the line was terribly slow during lunch hour. For those new here, it does not matter what you get. Everything is great. Remember they sell in orders so specify when you want just ONE piece. My top are the shirmp balls, fried shrimp crescents, shiu mai and the custard buns. That's usually my go to order each time.

2 dim sum lunches (each a big clear box and one of the porridges), a da bao, and an egg custard tart!

OMG. I'm 1000% happy I ordered dim sum delivery from here. One of the most satisfying meal delivery experiences of my life. Whoever's in charge at Tai Pan are unsung heroes and geniuses of the restaurant industry. Why am I so happy? Dim sum is encoded in my DNA. Unfortunately, you need a bare minimum of 3-4 to enjoy it, ideally 8+. Does that happen during the pandemic? Of course not. Does it even happen outside the pandemic? Not easily, because everyone's got crazy schedules, the restaurants understandably won't seat you until everyone in your party's arrived, and good and even decent dim sum restaurants are MADHOUSES on weekends. Enter Tai Pan and their genius offering of "Dim Sum lunches," boxes with a small selection of dim sum that's more than enough to feed the average hungry adult. It's perfect if you're ordering for 1-2, because you don't have to put in a full order with 3-4 pieces for each type of dim sum. Why doesn't every dim sum place offer this? I bought too much, because I've never been here and didn't realize their portion sizes are nonstandard. Most things are on the generous side of average, and a few things, like the shumai and chowmein are HUGE -- 2-2.5x the normal size. What do I think could be better? Honestly, for the price it's a STEAL. For me personally, I would happily pay more for a higher quality of dim sum -- I'm not too thin, so I prioritize enjoyment over portion size / quantity. For the same price or even a higher price, I would be happy to receive a smaller amount of higher quality food. (For instance, take the shumai. This is not a place where each piece is symmetrical, you can taste the quality of the ingredients, and they're adorned with crab eggs. It IS a place where the shumai are cheap and substantially larger than golf balls.) So it's a great value for money, and ofc the dim sum lunch boxes are GENIUS. I would truly appreciate seeing more selection in the dim sum lunches. If you ordered 2 of the 6 that were on offer when I ordered, you'd get everything offered in the dim sum lunches, which is not everything Tai Pan offers. A large part of the enjoyment of dim sum comes from variety, so I'd like to easily order more variety. One thing I thought they did particularly well is I tried to order several things -- fried rice, baked taro buns, something else -- that were sold out, and the cart immediately informed me they were no longer available. That's super helpful, instead of getting random substitutions in my order. Now I'm kicking myself bc I never ordered from here before. Previously, I was turned off by the 3-star reviews, plus it's not that close to me. From the reviews, it looks like Tai Pan's physical location is a small takeout-style "bakery" setup, and they're too busy to take phone orders and being there in person can be a bit hectic. So I highly recommend ordering from a delivery service (I used UberEats) -- the $10 fee and tip are super worth it for the convenience, so it doesn't take up a weekend morning. Wish there were a way to tip the restaurant and not just the driver! Also, my order arrived super quickly -- makes sense, because they're not cooking to order. They have everything ready to be boxed up takeout style, so the delivery time was surprisingly quick! Do be prepared to reheat a bit when you receive your order. DON'T order from here if you have a large family/group of dim sum buddies and require delicately prepared dim sum. DO order from here if you'd appreciate a selection for 1-2, are flexible about refinement, and/or like a good value. Everything considered, I can see myself ordering from here about every 3-6 weeks! PICTURED: 2 dim sum lunches, a da bao (literally big bao!), and an egg custard tart! WAY more food than I was expecting for $30 (before taxes, Uber fees, and tip to the driver).

We’ve been trying for hours to call in an order, but keep reaching a Verizon recording. Is there a different number to call other than the one online? Thanks!

The decor and ambiance is nice - very spacious and elegant. You can join the waitlist from Yelp - always a plus. Highlights: the har gow were plump with large pieces of shrimp and minimal filler. The dumpling skin was on the thicker side (I don't mind it but my wife likes thinner skins.) Maybe that was needed because of how big these were - really packed with shrimp. The mango pudding was delicious and reminded us of childhood, and the shrimp noodle roll was great. Lowlight: I was less happy with the xiaolongbao - there are so many good options for these in the South Bay that this meager interpretation was frankly bordering on blasphemy. I would not order those again. The steamed char siu bao were far better but still could've used more pork in the filling and were slightly soggy and over steamed. We also had the beef chow fun which was excellent with smoky wok hei flavor. Overall a good place for dim sum but avoid the xiaolongbao.

This is our family's new celebration restaurant. You know, the place you go to when out of town guests come and you want to treat them. The place you go to to celebrate a birthday or special occasion. The first time we came was for dim sum, which was soo good! I like that they still do carts and you get to experience the steam that tells you it's fresh. The interior design is beautiful, refined elegances, with marble flooring, chandeliers above, bright lighting, big screens where appropriate, numerous private rooms and details even in the bathrooms. It is a banqueting venue with ample space for weddings and large events. Our family particularly love their large round tables that can accommodate up to 12, as sometimes it's hard to eat all together at 1 table. When we were there for Chinese New Year celebration, they had a special menu with different selections to choose from. There was also a large party going on, where they were able to partition off the main space for privacy. Also there was a Tesla test driving promotion out front. Definitely good business to partner with other services like that, knowing their clientele. Overall, highly recommend this beautiful restaurant. Of course, it is on the high end of dining experiences, but for special occasions, I think it's worth it.

We knew to go early, since they don't take reservations and we often see lines outside. We arrived at 10:30am and the front manager said if we can be done my 12:30, that they had a table for us. Party of 12, since we got there early, we agreed. The side room had the biggest round table for us. They ask you what kind of tea you want, we like chrysanthemum tea. You order the items on the paper menu and it comes to your table. So we got going on the orders and TBH, we must be hungry, because we did a lot of orders (we had plenty of left overs). Tried some favorites and a few new items that we thought were unique to their restaurant. My dad has to order crispy noodle and chow fun, and we also ordered chicken fried rice. The service was prompt and attentive, with enough servers to take care of the side room. Since it was the "sun room", the sun was shining through the windows and it was bright. Review from my parents: it was just meh, they prefer the other place near our house. I think the food is good, but probably won't come back again with a big group of us, since they don't have many big round tables. And personally, I prefer the whole experience of the ladies coming around with their carts. Perhaps their dinner menu is also worth trying. Bonus for us is that we can literally walk to this restaurant. Parking could be an issue if you come later.

Ironically, I'm not a fan of them myself--they're a bit too eggy for my taste. When it comes to dim sum quality and service, I honestly prefer Koi Palace. The food quality there is more consistent, and the service is much more phenomenal. The only things this place really has over Koi Palace are the lower prices and those black sesame custard buns my friend loves! I've been here at least a dozen times, and the food can be hit or miss. Sometimes dishes come out cold, like they've been sitting out for a while instead of being served fresh and hot. That said, there are a few items we always order that are consistently good when brought out fresh like salted crispy pork chops, siu mai, shrimp rolls, and fried calamari. Be prepared for a wait on weekends since it gets crowded. If you're coming with a large group, it's best to arrive before noon. The restaurant is located next to a hotel, and finding the restroom can be confusing since it's inside the hotel. Service is also pretty minimal--they seem understaffed, and I almost always have to flag someone down just to get basics like soy sauce, chili, and water. I don't understand why they don't just have the sauce on the table for guest to dip, but I get that they're saving $ on controlling the cost down. On my most recent visit, the experience really went downhill. Our table had food but no soy sauce, chilli nor water, and when I flagged a waiter multiple times, he got visibly annoyed and irritated. It was frustrating--we shouldn't have to chase someone down repeatedly for basic condiments. Being met with attitude for that honestly left a bad impression. That experience alone makes me reconsider coming back. Good food at a good price is one thing, but poor service--especially to that extent--can really ruin the overall experience.

We had been waiting for an hour and they were not calling anyone for party of 6. So ridiculous. After waiting for 1.5 hours, we were finally seated and guess what? The table that we were seated at has 7 seats -- I looked at the other tables that were empty and they also had 7 seats -- meaning that at any point when a table for 6 or 7 was available, we, party of 6, could have been seated but she chose not to seat us and have us wait. Once we were seated, everything moved rather quickly. We were given a menu to order -- we ordered and within 10-15 minutes, everything was brought out to us. No wait time for the food, it was very fast. The food was decent but nothing memorable. Overpriced dim sum, overpriced food. As much I love Chinese food, I don't see myself coming back to this location because the wait times are crazy even if you come early. The dim sum carts have large variety and are fresh and fast, but the set menu helps alleviate the chaos and the decision of having to pick what to get haha. The food gets delivered fast and is fresh. The set menu has a large variety of different foods, from meat like duck and sweet / sour chicken, to veggies like mushroom and snap peas, to seafood like fish and lobster and scallops, as well as soup and fried rice. Some notes - The steamed dumpling skins tended to stick to each other and break while picking them up. The spare ribs were tender but a little bland. Needed black beans The shui mai are good but a little too fluffy which makes me think they have a lot of fat in them. The steamed rice rolls were nice. The gai lan was a bit fibrous and tough. The stir fried snow pea shoots with bean curd skin was a little bland. The durian puffs were good!
