I finally got to try this place out last weekend with some friends after hearing good things, so my hopes were high. It's tucked along the main boulevard of the Hill Country Galleria and has a nice up-scale interior. For our drinks, my wife and I picked a bottle of sake to share after a visit by Shawn, the owner, who went over a few different choices. This place has an excellent selection of sake and the one we went with was an unfiltered Sho Chiku Nigori which was slightly sweet and very smooth. For apps, we ordered a couple of variants of edamame (spicy and garlic) as well as the pork belly yakitori. The pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth good, just as pork belly should be. Deliciously marinated and served on skewers perfect for sharing. We also ordered the Texas poke which consisted of salmon and tuna pieces packed together on top of a nice soy/hatch sauce. As a main entree, we shared an order of the Chilean sea bass which was grilled to perfection and served on top of a bed of mushrooms and asparagus. The miso sauce that was used on the fish was plate-licking good, though I resisted since I was in the presence of other people. We also ordered some fatty salmon nigiri and fatty tuna nigiri, with cuts of fish that were super fresh and generously sized. Along with that, we had a few different rolls, my favorite being the hot lava roll with unagi and spicy tuna. And finally we got to try the Walu (wild escolar) sashimi served on a bed of ice. Again, just amazing and so fresh. Everything we ate seemed to disappear way too fast, which is a sure sign of a good meal. And it was neat that the owner spent time at our table to tell us about the different sakes to choose from and a little about his time living in Japan. As good as the food is, the service just ruins the whole experience. When I go out to drop $100+ on a dinner for two, I want it to be special. When this place first opened up, the service was good...not great, but just fine. Certainly passable. Tonight's experience was anything BUT special. I don't know if they have new management or what, but the last three times out the service has been beyond poor, culminating with tonight's ridiculous experience. Funny thing is, the place was less than half full all three times. How can sushi be special when obviously the waiter doesn't care about his job-- or his customers? Twice he left us hanging for 20 min or longer on orders. I had to get up and go ask about them and the manager came over and told us the waiter "forgot to enter them in." Twice! Really? How does a restaurant stay in business with such awful service? Even though I disrespect restaurants who sell oil fish "aka escolar, butter fish, etc" due to the potential toxic effects to human consumption at the benefit of restaurant margins, I was informed by their mgt that escolar at Tadashi is a safe premium fish from Hawaii allaying my fears of sampling some enticing rolls on their menu like the Voodoo. This spot is really delish. Fish is incredibly fresh and rolls are creative, bright and varied. I'd have to say, this is my favorite classic sushi restaurant in Austin. Our server, Michael, was just perfect. He was attentive without being overbearing, he gave suggestions and explained each beautiful roll as it arrived. Recommendations- - Hot Angel (just right amount of kick, bright and lots layers of flavor) - Peppered Tuna- usually not a huge fan of seared tuna on my rolls, but this was fantastic. Roasted garlic on top took it next level - Voodoo - spicy, nice crunch from the jalapeño, left out the carrots (yeogimasi?) - Rainforest- combination of a nigiri sampler and a roll. Awesome service complimented with great food = unstoppable sushi feast. Ordered the following for a Valentine's dinner: - nabeyaki udon: awesome possum. I liked that they served the shrimp tempura on the side so that it wasn't soggy. Portion size for price: mehhh - pork katsu bento box: this included seaweed salad, miso soup, about 6 strips of pork katsu (very gingery tasting), a good amount of tempura, 4 or 6 California rolls, rice, some random shrimp skewer things, one popcorn shrimp (lol). Portion size for price: on a scale of 1 to awesome; 7. - edamame: edamame.. - sashimi salad: sashimi tasted fresh, and pleased the girl. So... Take my money. Mission accomplished. Portion size for price: it's a salad so I don't know. Probably good? - dragon roll: contained remnants of baby dragons from 320 b.c. Just kidding. It had some good eel and not too saucy or sweet like other "Japanese" restaurants. Our host was worried we wouldn't be able to finish it all. We come here weekly for takeout and it is decent sushi. Today the guy, potentially new as I've never seen him before, insists he never got my order even though I shared confirmation with him. He was extremely rude, said he's not very tech savvy and doesn't really understand his system but couldn't find it. I asked to have someone else look and he said no. It's not here. I asked him to make a new order while I waited and he very begrudgingly agreed but said it would take at least 45 minutes. Restaurant was only maybe 20% full at the time. This place is Filthy with very poor service. Went on a Saturday and our drinking glasses were soooo dirty...all o them. Then I went to the bathroom...ughhh the floors and doors were covered in oil. I sat at the sushi bar near the rookie sushi chef, which was ok, but every question I asked was then run through the head sushi chef. The food was great and the sushi chef's were very nice. Me and my wife went there for dinner last night. ordered a couple of appetizers,2 rolls and a sushi sampler. our waitress brought the sampler and 1 roll. told us the other roll was coming. after 10 minutes she said it should be right out. after more than 20 minutes had elapsed after getting the first roll we said to forget it and left. There is no excuse for a sushi roll to take that long. the waitress made some excuse about it taking a while to fry the onions that the roll included but that was just an excuse and a pretty poor one. I want to give this place 5 stars, as we come often and have yet to have a bad meal...but we have had a bad EXPERIENCE. Quick take: the food is really good; not just the sushi but the bento boxes, etc. offer fresh ingredients and healthy portions. The no-so-great experience happened recently: Tadashi has an expansive outdoor seating area; we've eaten out there a half dozen times and each time there have been at least 1-2 dogs in this setting. But if you show up at Tadashi while Kevin, the GM, is manning the host station, the rules change: "No dogs allowed in the outdoor seating area! Ever!" He ultimately compromised by allowing our dog to be tied up on the other side of the fence, but his grumpy demeanor put a damper on the entire experience. In the grand scheme of things, not a big deal, but it was enough of a bummer to make us think twice before returning. So, if you're jonesing for some good sushi in Hill Country, definitely stop in ... just don't bring your beloved canine companions. (Unless you're ok switching up sushi for pizza, in which case Tony C's, right next door, will gladly permit your pup on the patio.) read more

We've been to Tadashi a few times now. I've enjoyed it enough, I'm giving them four stars but they're teetering on three. Why? Service. Let's talk about the food first. We've had a few of the appetizers. The edamame is what you would expect and it's nice getting that free with a Yelp check in. The wild game gyoza is tasty. 6 dumplings to a plate, the filling is a little loose, so don't leave it all in the dipping sauce. We ordered the tempura veggies and were able to get only sweet potatoes. That was nice of them. We mostly go to eat rolls. I like the Hawaiian which is akin to a rainbow roll, but only tuna and avocado. The Cloud Nine and Golden Gate were other winners too, in case you're looking for some suggestions. While I'm not a sushi newby, I'm not as versed as some of my other friends I enjoy going to have sushi with (and I let them order). I guess I just have to order nigiri pieces to get some of the fish specials they have. On whole, the sushi is no better or worse than a good restaurant. You want better, to go Tomo up north. If you saved room, the tempura ice cream is ridiculous. Let's go back to the service though. It's sluggish at best. I'm not timing them, so maybe it feels like a long time. Last time we went there were maybe 6-7 tables with people. It was easily 5-10 minutes before anyone engaged with us. My wife and I were visiting and not in a hurry so we didn't push it. There were a lot of employees milling about. It took a while for everything to get to the next step. We had an hour and a half dinner that wound up running up to when we needed to be somewhere else. Again, we weren't keeping track and weren't trying to rush it, but if you've got somewhere to be, maybe let them know. The last trip was the longest. That fourth star is dangling on my patience. read more

I was looking for a Japanese restaurant in the Austin area that would hit the spot. It didn't have to be the best Japanese food ever; it just had to be middle-of-the-road good to satisfy a craving here and there. I'm well aware of the limited Japanese food options in Austin (compared to big cities I've lived in on the West Coast and East Coast), so I didn't set my expectations too high. Despite that, I thought Tadashi was a huge flop. I went there for dinner on a weekend and have contemplated going back to try the happy hour, but I just don't think I want to waste my time or money. The food was ridiculously flavorless and over-priced. The eel donburi was lackluster to put it kindly. The rice literally tasted like nothing despite the additions of shrimp bits, carrots, etc. The eel, the star of the dish, was barely grilled and I found myself wishing for more sauce...any sauce...to add some life to the eel. The tonkatsu bento box was small and poorly executed. The tonkatsu was cut very thinly and was more breading than meat. The vegetable tempura was greasy and heavy. The tempura sauce was way too sweet. The edamame dish had poor presentation and execution. It looked like someone dumped it on the plate very haphazardly and then tossed on a pinch of salt at the last minute. The salt covered only a quarter of the dish. The service was okay, but there's room for improvement. Example: At the end of dinner, when we were almost done with our plates, the server apologetically brought out a much-needed spoon for the donburi. The restaurant aesthetics and atmosphere are great. It was super easy to book a reservation. That's about all that's good about Tadashi. read more

Maybe our visit was a fluke, but we arrived about 15 minutes before closing and it seems the restaurant was in full shut down mode. We had a group of 5. We ordered 3 appetizers (shishito, edamame, and teñirá vegetables). The vegetables took a long time to come out. The sauce served with the tempura had the flavor of water and we guessed that they had run out and possibly just added water to it. We have had such a great experience at Eurasia with the tempura vegetables that we thought we would receive that at this place, but not so. The tempura batter was tasteless and it just ruined the dish with the tasteless sauce. Then the rolls came and they were not so good, but it may have been our fault since we picked them. Pretty much what you are getting for $11.95 is a bag of Maruchan noodles with an egg and some meet! The broth was watered and plain and the presentation simply sad and pathetic! We absolutely love Tadashi and they have the best happy hour. Our favorite items are the spicy tuna rolls, crispy shrimp rolls, chicken gyoza, and much more. We always get great service here, it's become our favorite happy hour spot. They have drink and food specials 3-6pm M-F. And they have snow crab at a reasonable price, my favorite! The best part is they get their seafood fresh and you can tell the difference. Recently read an article in the Community Impact magazine that they pick up their fresh fish from the airport!
