Ever since moving to ATX from SoCal, I've had a hankering for California burritos with few options to go with--until now! The California burrito was the first item I ordered here and it did not disappoint. It was super solid and had the tasty fries you expect to have in your burrito. The ones I am used to usually have a dab of sour cream in the middle, but they have plenty of delicious sauce options to dip your burrito in. We also tried the shrimp, asada, and fish tacos and they were all quite tasty too. The servers were very friendly and were quick to make our food. The ambiance is what you'd expect from a fast casual lunch spot, though I would say it is very clean compared to many of the SoCal burritos establishments I'm used to. Dope place!!!! Truly SoCal carne asada burritos with just steak, cheese, pico, guacamole and crema.... Only elevated with big big chunks of angus steak meat. If you like fillers like rice and beans, don't come here. My only recommendation would be to up the salsa game. Oh man, I've been craving a good burrito for YEARS and haven't quite been able to find a spot here. Sooo excited there is a Tacolada. I went around 1pm and there was a decent little line but ordered and got my food within 15-20 min. Such a great tortilla and burrito--the way a burrito should be! It's nice to have Cali flavors here in Austin. This is a good quick lunch spot; they do have beer, which is a plus. We ordered the Cali burrito carne asada and a carne asada quesadilla. The burrito was yummy, and I would get it again, but the quesadilla, they didn't let the cheese melt fully. The portions are really nice-sized, and the service was amazing for a newly opened spot; we really liked it. We did meet the owner, who was super nice. Will be back to try other menu items. They have good amount of sitting inside and few chairs & tables with Umbrella outside. read more

For those of you from California.. go to VIVO!!! It's the best Californian Mexican restaurant in Austin.. I did try the carne asada taco here though and it was okay I just wish the shell was super crispy... I'm more of a Tex mex girl myself. Sauces were not great they didn't seem homemade like most local places. I might give it another try soon. read more

I wish there were more vegan options, but the basics are solid. Chips and guac are fresh, salsa verde has a nice bite, and they'll make you a decent rice and bean burrito on request. Hella fast counter service and really nice workers too. Not a destination for me but totally serviceable and satisfying if you're in the area. As someone who grew up and lived in SD for 24 years, I had really high hopes for this place. After getting non stop ads from social media about this place, I had to give it a try. Cali Burrito -added guac. Overall decent but having cold unmelted cheese took it down several notches. Fries were crispy and meat was not bad. Carne Asada fries - this one was disappointing. best way to describe this is if Chipotle were to make Carne Asada Fries, this would be it. Too many acidic components in one dish (Pico, Sour Cream, pickled Onions). Felt way too healthy and "fresh" to be San Diego Style carne asada fries. Also the cheese on this, not sure what kind of cheese was used but I imagine it was melted in a big batch under a broiler or salamander and the cheese just stuck everything together. In SD the overall heat of freshly made fries would be good enough the melt the cheese and not be clumpy. Salsa Bar / Hot sauces - My personal opinion is that a taco/burrito spot lives and dies by their salsa bar and this one missed the mark. Salsas were vinegar based and none were actually spicy. They had a habanero honey which I could barely taste any habanero, mainly just vinegar. Came in with too high of hopes but this is probably the closest I've gotten to a taste of home in ATX. Overall, didn't remind me of SD style Mexican food, maybe something that you could get in North County. read more

Have missed rolled tacos in San Diego for the 30 years we've lived in Austin. So when we saw this place opening last week it was a no brainer to try them out. The crunch on the taquitos was on pointe and the guacamole was perfect. I deleted the marinated onion slices on top....must be a new add on that I didn't want. Goat cheese was good and their house salsa was a bit hot and worked perfectly. Talked to a bunch of folks in line who were also from Southern California. Funny to see people trying to get their hit of SOCA Mexican food. My husband constantly suggests getting on a plane to fly to San Diego for a hit of real taquitos and a carne asada burrito at Robertos. So maybe now he'll quit suggesting it. No notes. Flawless execution of a superb San Diego burrito. Every element was stand out in its own. The tortilla has a fresh floury yet toasted texture and flavor. The ingredients taste clean and have excellent flavor. The guac is lemony and salty just like I like it. The fries have a great crisp. The carne asada is the perfect flavor and texture and not over seasoned. I don't know how you could improve on this burrito. As someone who has extensively searched for and documented every best CA burrito, this surpasses a lot of my go-tos and earns a top ten stop in my favorite burritos anywhere. My wife also enjoyed the Baja fish taco. Great crispy fish. Nothing soggy. And the corn tortilla tasted like it was made with care and did not suppress the flavors of the ingredients. Well, I devoured my taco de asada and all of my food. I started eating my asada fries when I remembered to take a picture. They have little mini churros that are so good! Definitely try them! The asada taco tortilla tastes so good, had me wondering if they can sell just the tortilla itself. Overall, they have a fun fresh flavor and charbroiled meats. Serviced was great. Tacolada is exactly what Austin needed. Tex-Mex is obviously great here, but San Diego-style Mexican food has its own distinct identity and is extremely worthy in its own right and Tacolada does an excellent job representing it. The owner is from San Diego, and it shows. The food is on point, flavorful, fresh, and a great reflection of that Southern California Mexican style. As someone who grew up in San Diego, I was looking forward to this. We sorely need more SoCal Mexican food here. Obviously, had to get the California Burrito. Service is friendly :) The burrito was fine. It's small by socal standards. But where it really drops stars is the salsa bar. Anyone who knows, knows the salsa bar is one of the most important features. Each one was super bland. There is zero depth of flavor. It's just medium, hotter, hot. No burnt char. No bits of garlic or goodness ground up. If they fix this, it easily jumps to 4 stars. My wife got the breakfast burrito with carne asada. There was barely any steak. It was mostly egg. Worst of all, she spotted the liquid eggs carton in the kitchen so texture was really off. Fresh eggs would be way better. Overall, pretty mid by San Diego standards. The Cashier was very nice. I Ordered the Pollo Asado Taco which was very good. I also tried the Tacolada Sauce it was good and spicy. however the buzzer went on to early as they have not finished my order. The restaurant was quite warm, and without air conditioning, the heat from the kitchen was noticeable. The ordering process was also unclear, and the dining area is small and cramped. While there were several salsa options, they were all fairly spicy and somewhat bland. Offering a mild salsa would be a nice addition for customers who prefer less heat. The carne asada had a good grilled flavor, but the burrito overall lacked seasoning and didn't have much flavor. read more

As someone who grew up in California, I was genuinely excited to try this place. It kept showing up all over my social media feeds, and everyone seemed to be raving that it was just like an authentic California taqueria. Looking at the menu, I could definitely see the inspiration and was really looking forward to finally trying it. Unfortunately, my experience was pretty disappointing. We ordered lunch for our office, and while the presentation was good and the toppings, rice, and beans were all perfectly fine, the meat was a major letdown. The carne asada had virtually no flavor whatsoever. Not a hint of seasoning, not a pinch of salt, not even the brightness you get from lime or traditional marinades. It honestly tasted like plain, unseasoned meat. For me, that's a huge issue because the meat should be the star of the show, especially in a carne asada taco or burrito. You can have great toppings, good rice, and good beans, but if the protein lacks flavor, the entire dish falls flat. I found myself wondering if the restaurant is simply benefiting from social media hype more than the actual food quality. To be fair, I'm willing to give it one more chance and visit in person to see if the experience is different fresh from the restaurant versus delivery or takeout. But based on this visit alone, it doesn't come close to the taquerias I grew up eating at in California. I really wanted to love it, but for me, the lack of seasoning on the meat was impossible to overlook. read more

For those commenting on salsa bar being mediocre, their salsa bar is true to California. Especially that orange sauce. Most burrito shops serve red or green but California is popular for serving green, red and orange if you're lucky! I always choose orange! I do wish the orange sauce was a little bit creamier but it was a close match. Nice char on my tortilla, not too many fries and asada was tender. Burrito naturally had a little bit of a kick to it, which was nice. Four orange sauces to one CA burrito is my ratio (yes, I could drink it). Service was good and portions were decent. One burrito lasted me two meals. Can't wait to go back and try the shrimp burrito next time. read more
