So when my friend Juan tells me this is his favorite Mexican food spot in town (actually he refers to the N Austin location since this one is fairly new) I immediately knew I had to see what it was all about. This place is located next to the new Emo's East location on Riverside. Luckily it is close to my work, super cheap, and the service is quick so I can get in and out on my lunch break. When we went I decided to step away from the standard tacos and tortas routine and really try the menu. So I ordered the Small consome de borrego and fried corn tortilla quesadilla thing that I can only describe as the awesome love child of a flauta and a quesadilla. So first the consome de borrego, which for you gringos from north of the border is a broth with garbanzo beans, baby goat, and an assortment of spices, I also added cilantro and onions. This thing is the perfect hangover cure/cold weather food. But only order the small it comes in a bowl that you would expect to be a large order. This thing must be tried. Second the fried maize quesadilla, I ordered it with al Pastor but there is a wide assortment of meat choices. It comes smothered in lettuce, tomato, avocado, and sour cream. I ended up pouring salsa over mine as well. This was also delicious, I don't think I will ever look at a chicken flauta the same way again. Chips were pretty standard chips but had a good thickness for dipping in the assorted salsas, remaining broth from my consome, and leftover toppings from the quesadilla. They have a complimentary salsa bar which has everything from your standard salsas to cucumber. A lot of options here and the 3 salsas I tried were all very different and quite good in their own application. Mix and Match. Best of all the entire meal came in at UNDER $6. Legit. I'm authentic Mexican and this place just does it all perfectly. They have goat tacos, menudo, pozole, sopes, tortas. cabrito soup, pastor, aguas. The food comes out super fast and always tastes delicious. Salsa bar too! If you look around a Mexican restaurant and see Mexicans, you know you've come to the right place. I came here because I have a friend and co-worker who is from Mexico City and this is on his list of top three Mexican restaurants in Austin (also Fonda San Miguel and El Taquito). I was not disappointed! Firstly, they have a salsa bar with at least six different red and green salsas as well as a few different types of peppers and other accouterments. Reminded me of Israeli falafel joints. Second, I had the goat soup and it was one of the tastiest soups I've ever had in my life. The broth was not too salty yet packed with flavor and the meat was so juicy, tender and well seasoned I just couldn't get enough! However, at $3, the chico is all you need. Only go bigger if that's all you're eating or you are taking home. Next, I had the sope de cecina and the taco de pastor. The sope has a really great sauce on it and I love that it comes with avocado. The pastor was very well seasoned and again, not too salty. My soup, sope, taco and Corona came to $12.99. What??? I told her that two three dollar tacos would be $6 plus tax, totaling $6.48. I paid the $6.48 and left. She never offered an apology nor an explanation. Last week my co-worker told me she had to take me to the new Taco More. She was raved about the food being tasty and cheap. I have never been known to pass on taco and happily went to lunch with her on Tuesday. I have not been to the original Taco More but this location has plenty of seating and it is very clean (including the bathrooms). For my meal I ordered a fajita sope, small chicken consomme with a side of avocados, and diet coke. Everything was great and the portions were huge. I couldn't finish my soup. My friend put it perfectly: Taco Deli and Torchy's take what Mexicans hold to be their true grub and apply it in a white and Americanized fashion. THAT is why Taco Deli is able to create a cult following with their green Dona sauce. Every Mexican shack around town serves this stuff! Hogwash, Taco Deli.... but I do like you, nonetheless. Taco More was seriously one of my most favorite Mexican eateries before I had even found out this outpost on the famed (and highly questionably sketchy) had come into fruition. I mean, you just cannot go wrong with all you can eat salsa. Let me exploit their hospitality for a sec. What if you were to order a $2 taco and get 1 container of each of their 8 salsas to go? Their containers are extremely large, to boot. Don't do this... just a though at how open they are in letting you take their colorful tomato-based sauces. Could you get any more awesome? Well, they couldn't... but at this occasion, I went for a torta, and it ended up being disheartening. Normally, tortas are enormous. As expected, the $4.50 was on point... it was smaller than most $5 tortas, but uncharacteristically so. I found it to be well grilled, but small. The ingredients inside were disappointing: a mere 5 avocado slices, a light smear of beans, 3 tomato slices. That was it. Sad, huh? Their al pastor meat was tough. Yeah, it had that swine-centric flavor and that desirable, oddly red color, but it shouldn't taste like fajita meat--somewhat chewy and all. If you really want to stimulate your taste buds at Taco More, you gotta get yourself some of their salsas. Their best is probably the dark orange; it will get your motor running, no doubt. Taco More or Less. First time visit with high expectations based on reviews. Came for the "famous" Cabrito soup. Greeted at the door by hostess leading us to our table, chips and salsa in hand. Quickly realizing we were the only gringos in the house. The Chips seem standard bulk supply similar to Polvos. Salsa not too exciting. Quickly ordered beers that were promptly delivered but only slightly below room temperature. Ordered a large Cabrito soup and small chicken soup. They quickly arrived with a foil pack of standard issue bulk buy machine made commercial grade tortillas. That's it. No condiments. So go to salsa bar and still no excitement. Bland salsas, cucumbers, radishes, limes, pickled white onion and blistered jalepenos. No pico de gallo, no cilantro, no raw onion or Jalepenos. The flavors were fine. The meat content was lost in the broth and of the shredded variety. All in all it was ok and worthy of 3 stars. I have had many tacos, consome de cabrito (goat stew), gringas, tortas, tostada de ceviche, and more and they are all great. Their goat soup is pretty good and is probably the best choice of the soups. The tacos are what are the best choice here, in that they are what they are known for, and that you can utilize their salsa bar. This place needs to advise their waitstaff NOT TO DO THE FOLLOWING: stand there like a high school principal or a cop and wait for you to sign your credit card slip as if you're going to walk on the tab, not tip or something. This is an incredibly condescending "policy" they seem to have implemented, as it has happens every time I go there and opt to pay with plastic. On my most recent visit, I asked the server "do you have to stand here while I sign"? She left the table for a mere few seconds and swooped back down to snatch it up immediately. Good thing. I was about to run on my $8.66 check, even though my card had been swiped and on file. *being sarcastic, of course* Instead, thanks to her supervision, I paid and left a 3.00 tip. I'm completely obsessed with this place. Legit Mexican food at a very reasonable price. The service is hurried-it's a casual eatery, nothing too elaborate-but I love coming here for takeout. Try the goat stew and the ceviche. The large ceviche-at $10- will feed you for days. It tastes better and actually costs less than making your own ceviche, in my limited experience. I wait to review a joint once I've eaten multiple dishes there but I haven't been able to order anything other than chicken fajita tacos every time at Taco More. I know! Boring, right? Don't forget the optional onions and cilantro! Shortly after I place my order, I make a mad dash toward the salsa bar, as if they're going to run out of items soon. I get my fill of really spicy red and green salsa, CARMELIZED ONIONS, green bell peppers, and cucumbers because cucumbers are really good. So I'm back at my table - chillin'. What Taco More does is give you two corn tortillas per taco. Did I mention how yummy their tortillas are? I've learned a nifty way to trick my stomach/brain. I take one of the corn tortillas and fill it with half the meat from the original taco. I apply the same method to my second taco. This way it appears I have four average sized tacos instead of two pretty stuffed ones. I also get to use different salsas this way. The system works, people! Taco More also stocks huge Mexican cokes and makes some of the best damn charro beans I've ever had in my young life. I'm still nervy about the cabrito though. Although I am not a taco pro, i think their tacos are tasty and they come with lots of different choices of meat such as cabrito, cabeza, and lengua. The pastor was also good.
