Went with some friends to celebrate a birthday. Food was dry and service was slow. Whatever you do, don't tell them it's someone's birthday because they will come out singing to the person and then shove a plate of whipped cream in the person's face even if you ask them not to. The person at our table had an allergic reaction to the whipped cream and ended up needing meds and had to miss a day of work due to the reaction. Shortly after restaurant staff committed battery against the person in our group, staff did the same to a young boy at another table. Singing is okay but management should re-evaluate the battery against patrons. Will not be going back to this place. read more

I really enjoy Taco Mexicali, and I'll begin by echoing Gretchen H.'s review. Read it. She's right on. I've been here three times now. The food is always very, very good, and the service is excellent. All three of my waiters have straddled the fence between being attentive and allowing customers to enjoy their meals perfectly. I really love the way they season their steak. The burrito Chicago I enjoyed yesterday was served with a white cheese sauce, and it was delightful. Their salsa is excellent, and they keep the drinks flowing. Furthermore, it's inexpensive. My daughters shared an adult meal (and ate part of mine!) and my sweetheart and I each had our own meals, and we were out of there for $40, which included a 20%+ tip for the high quality service. read more

This place used to be great a couple years ago. Decided to head back this week and was more than disappointed. Took a lot longer to get the food after ordering than it used to. The cheese in the cheese enchilada was not melted at all in the center. It was like they just heated the outside too fast which left the cold shredded cheese in the middle. My main gripe was that they charged me for something that I didn't ask for and that wasn't on the menu. I ordered a Jumbo Gold Texas Margarita. Pointed to it on the menu. It was $12.99, a little high, but whatever. When the bill came it was $19.99. I asked why it was that price when the menu said $12.99, and was told that the one on the menu was a medium (there was no medium on the menu), and I ordered the Jumbo (which was the only Texas margarita on the menu, and priced at $12.99). In fact, they don't have any drink listed at $19.99 on the menu at all. Not sure how it's legal for a restaurant to say that "Jumbo" on the menu means medium and "Jumbo" when you say it and point to the same menu item means Jumbo, and then charge you a price that's not on the menu without letting you know until the bill arrives. Service is EVERYTHING! As soon as you walk in someone greets you with lots of energy. That same enthusiasm is carried out thru the duration of your dining experience. I've come here a couple times for lunch and I've also come in the evening for the dinner. Mexican food is one of my favorites so I feel like I can never go wrong with anything on the menu. I've had the Arroz con pollo a couple times, I forgot what the name of my most recent dish was but it was hella good! The dining area is full of color and there are a nice amount of tables available. Came with my kids, girlfriend and mother. We were seated quickly but on the way to our booth, the guy didn't seem to know where exactly we could've sat. The radio was WAY too loud and the music choice wasn't completely appropriate for a family orientated place. My girlfriend order was wrong. My tortillas were wet so I asked for different ones and those were even wetter. The shrimp has absolutely NO flavor! I will definitely avoid chain Mexican restaurants. read more

Unexpectedly Great! + vegetarian options From the outside the restaurant seemed empty, but we decided to give it a shot. Immediately as we walked in we were greeted and sat down. This was a great mexican place in williamsburg! The waiter was nice and speedy, the food came out hot. I got the nachos texanos and was well priced. The white sauce was perfect, and we sung to as it was my mom's birthday. I think that the drink selection was pretty good. Would reccommend for future visits! read more

Every time we go here we love it! Today I had their pork carnitas which were so juicy and tender. My husband had the chorizo huevos which he also loved. We've also had a seafood thing we loved for dinner a few months back!! The salsa is delicious and beers have always been cold!! The staff makes you feel just like family when you walk in and are supper attentive the whole time you're in there. This is a great little Mexican place, tucked in a corner so you almost don't see it. I was craving street tacos after being gone so long from the west coast. I didn't even look at the menu...I asked for street tacos & settled on the carne asada & the pork. Both were so flavorful that I only added fresh cilantro & onion (love the taco fixings bar!!!). Portions are HUGE! Staff was so friendly & helpful. I will definitely come back. PS The decor was fun. I had a late lunch (just before they closed). An amazing surprise in a small strip mall! We shared a meal with grandparents and teens on a busy Saturday evening. The staff was accommodating in every way! They pushed together tables to seat us all together, they quickly took our drink orders and provided us with details about the large menu. We most appreciated their extra efforts to make sure our teen with autism was comfortable by turning down the background music volume. Then our food arrived and we were all blown away by the quality and the flavors we experienced. Every single dish was excellent! My wife said: "I wish we lived closer. We'd be here every Friday night!" I usually skip the rice and beans at most mexican restaurants. It usually isn't worth eating. But at Taco Mexicali, not only are their beans and rice some of the best I've had, the rest of the meal was surprisingly good. I had the Texas Fajitas -- Chicken, Shrimp and Steak. Great flavor, the onions and peppers well cooked without overcooking the meat. Really really good. My wife had the skirt steak and was also really happy. On top of it all it was Happy Hour between 4-8pm with $2.50 margaritas. They were really good. My wife thought they were a little sweeter than she might like, but I loved that. To give some perspective, we have eaten at the chefs table at Tru in Chicago, my wife is a competitive cook, and I've worked at 2941 in Falls Church, VA. We've had amazing food, and this was a meal that was really well put together, done with care, and done so at a veritable bargain. Mexican rice has chicken stock. Host messed up on our order 3 times or forgot to bring things. The "salsa bar" or lack there of isn't really one and the wait staff stares you down if you go more than once. Friend said chicken flautas was dry. They added items on our bill when they didn't even bring it out. They even added a queso when we didn't order one so.. Taco Bell is a lot better with more variety and better service. Taco Mexicali gets better every time I eat there! I haven't been in several months because I live in Richmond but I've started to make a stop here part of my Williamsburg itinerary because it's so good. I grew up in California so am partial to the California-style taqueria food and this restaurant is as close as I've found in Williamsburg. I usually get the tacos, which are available a la carte for $2.50 each and include all the traditional fillings. Their salsa bar is also quite good and has some of the best salsa cruda/pico de gallo I've had. Even their standard salsa they serve with the complimentary chips is delicious! read more

I had a great meal and experience here...and tried this restaurant solely based on Yelp reviews. This is a small unassuming place with a strong "family-owned" feel. They serve the typical homemade chips and salsa...but they take it to a new level. You get their house salsa, but there is a salsa bar (free) that guests can use to doctor up their own salsa concoction...tons of fresh ingredients to play with! I ordered the cilantro-line chicken, which was excellent. The Spanish rice is simple, but very well done. The dish also came with a "guacamole salad"...I usually don't like guac at all, but it was really good and I would definitely order it as a side in the future. My server was a friendly young man who truly treated me like family. When I was finished with my meal, he wrapped up the leftover chips for me...I've never seen that done at any Mexican restaurant. During the meal I had mentioned that I had used the salsa bar to mix up a great new flavor, and when he wrapped up the chips, he actually went to the salsa bar and packed me a container of my "recipe". I couldn't believe it. The service was so good that he got a 40% tip from me. read more

I had forgotten that I bookmarked it, but the other place we were headed to was closed on Mondays but this place was close, had four stars so we decided to go for it. It made lunch a totally somber affair. Initially I ordered carnitas, our server returned to say they were out, but did not bring back the menu. I asked him what he recommended and took his recommendation. What I was presented with was basically some meat in a tortilla smothered in melted cheese. The beans were so runny it was hard to eat them with a fork. The rice, I guess it was Spanish because it had a pink tint to it. Took about 5 minutes before a server acknowledged us being there, 10 more minutes for water, 5 more minutes for a simple beer and margarita (thats 20 minutes for those not keeping up). Also ordered queso - told them to cancel it at the 20 minute mark. 0/5 stars. Food: Chips and salsa were the standard at every other mexican joint. Not bad, not good. Just something to munch on while waiting 35 minutes for a couple combo meals and 2 kids meals. Lady came to apologize for food taking so long - said they were missing a cook. Most Mexican restaurants seem just like any other Mexican restaurant. But this one is just a little bit different and I like it! Upon your arrival, the waiter will give you chips and salsa. But what makes this restaurant different is the fact that you can go up to a bar and get various extra condiments, such as pico de gallo, fresh cilantro, onions, jalapenos, white sauce and others accoutrements. My main dish, La Gringa, a chicken fajita like dish, was very good. And the service, as is the case with most Mexican restaurants, was very speedy. We work at the local 911 Center and have ordered carryout multiple times from Taco Mexicali, we used to love it, however, lately it has gone down hill. Tonight my co-worker and I ordered a salad (Ensalada Espanola) described as grilled chicken breast lettuce avocado tomato and grilled shrimp. We didn't get any avocado or tomato, instead had cucumbers, onions, orange slices, and a lime wedge, also very little lettuce. The chicken and shrimp had no flavor.
