The food is "cheap" and the taste and quality represent that. I was watching the cooks microwave the tamales, the rice was dry and unseasoned, and the staff was unprofessional. Despite not enjoying it the first time I considered trying it again just in case it was a mistake. However, when I attempted to try again, the staff found it acceptable to leave a note about "parking in their lot" on my car while I was at a neighboring business. First time in this restaurant and staff were very helpful. The owner was working along side his employees and gave us complementary chips and salsa. The food was delicious, authentic, and reasonably priced. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in the area. read more

The bartender at Soaring Eagle told me this place had above average tacos. He was right. I tried both, the soft shell corn and flour tacos, and they were pretty good...but their hard shell was fantastic! The shells were super crispy but a little thicker than the norm so they hold together really well. They also fill their tacos nicely here...no skimping on meat or cheese. I will say that the seasoning is a little weak so the meat can be a little bland but still great tacos. The chicken tamale was pretty solid while I'd pass on the beans next time. But their rice is KILLER and their hot sauce is homemade and it's awesome. Service was quick and friendly, and the restaurant was clean. You wouldn't know it to look at the place but TB is the best Mexican in Mt. Pleasant. It's a very ordinary looking little place; but the food is amazing and the staff is always nice. People make a big deal about their wet burritos, but their tacos and tostadas are better than you'll get anywhere around. And all of this is for about the same price you'll pay at that fast food place. They seem to actually pay attention to the ingredients and it shows. (The only place they don't shine is their tamales. They're just ok.) I particularly like their "drive through". You drive up to the window,. The guy asks "what do you want?" and you wait at the window until it's ready. No speakers. No double lines. This Mexican restaurant is a Mt. Pleasant mainstay. I would eat here when I was a student at CMU in the late 70's and couldn't afford a whole lot but had a craving for Mexican food. The food is consistent, fresh and tasty. I try to stop in and pickup their lunch combination plates when I'm in or near Mt. Pleasant. I like the hot tortilla chips and fresh salsa. This place has the best mini wet burritos you'll ever try, and for a price point that's insane! This place is well known among local mount pleasant residents, and to the CMU students that can appreciate quality Mexican food. They have many options to choose from- from taco, to burritos, to even their cinnamon twists! You won't be upset. They have quite a few vegetarian options, and also they have different tortillas (corn vs flour) depending on if you have gluten sensitivities. Their homemade hot sauces are very flavorful. Every time I go to Taco Bell and get hard shell tacos they are either soggy or breaking apart but when I go to taco boy their shells are always crunchy and are never broken before I get to take a bite! Anyone who has has written a positive review for Taco Boy either 1) was drunk as hell when they went there, or 2) has no idea what decent, or even MEDIOCRE mexican food is. I've been almost everywhere in Mt Pleasant, but I had sort of forgotten about Taco Boy. The girlfriend and I finally decided to head there. We walk into basically an empty knock off of Taco Bell. Their menu, which basically doesn't explain anything, was tough to work through and pretty tough to figure out what we wanted. Just no explanation of what was what or what things came with. Finally, I ordered the super wet burrito. Ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and sauce over the top. What I ended up with was probably the worst thing I've ever had. Ground beef was completely under-seasoned - it had literally no flavor. Anddd, that's about it, since the whole thing is based on the beef. Of course the lettuce and tomatoes and onions had nothing wrong with them - they're raw vegetables! The burrito is covered in some sort of canned tasting enchilada sauce, and the burrito was clearly microwaved. Once I got towards the center, it was hardly warm. My girlfriend ordered some sort of combo meal that came with a taco, tostada, and beans. What came out literally looked like wet cat food on a plate. The refried beans, clearly right out of a can. Again, the beef was bland and the cheese looked disgusting. So, a super wet burrito, a nasty combo, and a regular pop for nearly $17.00!!!!! I could have gotten just as much, if not more food, and BETTER food at Taco Bell. I will never, ever come back to this place. The fact that they're still in business and people go here is sad. Oh, and one other thing before I end my review - I understand this is supposed to be a "locally" owned version of mexican fast food, but come on!! Heard they had the same menu as Mr. Taco. Unfortunately not the same food. The green all meat was very light on green chilies and included a sharp cheddar cheese and lettuce. My boyfriend and I wanted to support a local business but it turned out to be a mistake. We ordered via door dash and chose the pickup option. I don't eat meat so in the comments I asked for beans instead of meat on a single taco- I figured it didn't hurt to try and if they didn't do it no big deal since it was only one taco. When I got there they hadn't even started our food and a shorter middle aged man told me door dash needed to be contacted because they couldn't fulfill my request. I told them I placed the order and it was no big deal. He acted like he couldn't even make our food and couldn't explain why. They finally started to do so after he was pretty rude. I also ordered guac and they took a packet of green paste out of the freezer and thawed it in between their hands for 10 minutes. That was their "guac" and when I tried it at home it was disgusting- it tasted like a garlicky paste and I threw it away. My boyfriend said his tacos were dry and nothing special. My husband ordered a beef wet burrito that literally was tasteless and my dry chicken burrito was just that dry, no taste AT ALL. We ordered 2 quesadillas for my kids and it was terrible. Great cheap tacos from homemade recipes. Regarding the reviews that compare it to Taco Bell, I question your culinary exposure. Maybe you have been raised on Taco Bell and consider that food, but to knock other people and tell them they don't know what good food is when you are eating Taco Bell's 35% meat should demonstrate your culinary expertise; or that the "meat tastes funny" maybe because its real, and not oats and soy? Taco Boy makes cheap, great food. They have a menu different from the other taco chains (thankfully) so don't expect the same. It is not authentic Mexican food; it is the American version. I have had just about one of everything on the menu, and I enjoyed everything so far. It is a bargain for good food. I was expecting a crispy flour tortilla with a nice melted cheese and chunks of chicken with some sort of green spicy sauce (figure it would be the green tamatillo sauce). I can't say I'd try this place again. The tables were dirty. The price point was a bit high for what the food was. I've never had a more bland wet burrito. The prices aren't even accurate from what they advertise. The sour cream was extra and was advertised at 35 cents, but they charge 60 at the register.
