I live near Taboun and that is the only reason I come here, although it is not bad. I have had lots of middle eastern food and this place is rather average (though not greasy, which is good!). I have tried most things here and nothing is quite good enough to be a favorite. I have multiple complaints about Taboun. The food is not very consistent. Sometimes it tastes really good, sometime it is cold, less flavorful and undercooked. Oftentimes when you order falafel they give you cold ones that were cooked awhile ago. If you get a wrap that has their large french fries in it, they put in really cold and soggy old fries as opposed to fresh ones. The meats tend to be dry and spend variable amounts of time being cooked on the stove vs. turning grill (I can't think of the correct name for that right now). In general, I just think this place is inconsistent and as I said in the beginning... if I moved I would not miss this place, but because it is so convenient, I remain a consistent patron. read more

Solid little shawarma place (I don't care if they DO spell it 'shawirma') down the hill from the UCSF Parnassus campus, run by nice people. The beef/lamb shawarma is excellent -- the bread has the leathery quality that reminds me of a brief childhood stay in Beirut. The vegetarian sampler, with good, smoke-flavored babaghanouj, an almost liquified hummus, and a tabbouleh where where the parsley and lemon really assert themselves, also reminds me of how these things were prepared in Lebanon, even though the very nice owners are Palestinian. But (sigh) -- if things were different we'd only be talking an hour's drive, so it doesn't surprise me that it's similarly prepared. Great option if you're a UCSF student (or use the Millberry gym like I do) for a quick, relatively healthy bite, or are toodling around Cole or the Haight and don't mind a little detour for a nice, light meal. I was rather disappointed by my experience here, but perhaps, it is because I ordered something that really didn't massage my taste buds and that is partly my own fault. The boyfriend discovered this place on yelp and we went after a short stairway walk in the Upper Market area. I ordered a Chicken Shish Kabab wrap. I should have read the menu b/c it says, clearly stated that it had tahini sauce in it. I've had tahini sauce before, but I was caught off guard that the whole mixture of roasted tomatoes, cucumber salad and seasoned onions were DOUSED with tahini sauce. It did not agree with my stomach and after two small bites, I had to stop. It is an afterthought, but I rarely like ANY sauces or dressing on my food. I guess this was DEFINITELY not the best order for me and I should have tried the DINNER, as opposed to the wrap and asked it to be w/o the tahini sauce. So, I'll be fair and say that it was not the restos fault, but most likely mine for my experience. I need to give an objective review, so here it is: 1) The establishment is clean (from the customer seating area, kitchen to the bathroom) 2) The food is prepared fresh as you order it. 3) It is sorta self service (you pick your seat, grab your drink, utensils and wait for your food to come out) 4) The seating area is small. 5) There is only a limited selection of food. 6) Parking doesn't seem to be so difficult in that area, if you don't mind walking a few blocks. This place is nice and very close to work (UCSF Parnassus). I had a spicy beef-lamb shwarma wrap, some falafel and hummus. It ended up being two meals worth of food. The falafel were flavorful and crispy. The hummus was creamy and tahini-i. The shwarma meat was tender and really flavorful. For the price, it was way worth it. And I can take muni back and forth. Taboun is a solid place to grab a quick lunch or dinner if you're on the way to somewhere. I always get the lamb/beef or chicken shawarma wrap, ask for it spicy to add a little extra flavor. The hummus and baba ghanoush do look pretty good as well but since I always get Taboun when I'm on the go I haven't tried them yet. It always seems like it takes them longer to make the food than it should, but even then it's pretty fast so I can't really complain. The wraps are LARGE and reasonably priced, the connivence of this places for me helps as well. If you're in the area and you want a shawarma wrap on the go, this is your answer. read more

Well, I don't normally eat Mediterranean food, but I had food from this place once, when my mentor decided to buy everyone in my lab lunch from this place. My very first experience with a falafel wasn't very good. It was dry and not great. But when I ate a falafel from here...I fell in love with them. It was so good. We ordered a vegetarian platter, with a bunch of stuff on it. There was mojadara (which was one of my faves), taboun salad, hummus, tabouleh, and some other things too. I usually order catering. A small vegetarian platter and several chicken kabobs on the side. It comes with plenty of pita bread. The chicken kabobs were really good. Seasoned wella and juicy. They separate it from the veggie platter. I went once for lunch and ordered a chicken kabob wrap. I think I'd prefer it on a plate and wish the wrap came with hummus. The wrap itself was sort of dry until you get to the juicy meat or sauce. Overall, I'd order their veggie platter, but probably wouldn't come here for lunch again. read more

Come on, Taboun... I just got a falafel wrap, and the lavash is about 6 layers thick, basically giving something that tastes like a cracker the consistency of soggy cardboard. (Did you know lavash means "cracker bread"? thanks Wikipedia) I have to bite through it to get the GOOD stuff on the inside, which only makes up about a third of the wrap. Yuck. FYI: you guys CAN put the amazing falafel you make IN the amazing pita you also make. and no, you don't have to wrap it up and put it on a grill! You just serve it that way - if it's to go, wrap it gently -- but not like a burrito... Ugh. I really want to drop a star here but they still have some of the best falafel in SF, and good options aside from the wraps (e.g. veggie combo). So they deserve 4, I guess. This place is super friendly and the overall taste is nice as well. I had the chicken shwarma and it beat out Blue Front IMO. My friend has a gluten allergy and they adjusted their plate to fit her needs. They also came outside to double check to make sure that she was allergic to other ingredients. I have only been here once, but I would go back for sure! I will have to say that I prefer a much strong tzatziki sauce, if I had to complain. But after following a recommendation from a friend, this place totally changed my mind ... My wife and I usually order takeout from here every few weeks since the restaraunt is kinda small to eat at. I must've came on an off-night because the Lamb-Beef Shawarma I got to-go had absolutely no girth to it and by the time I got home, the Shawarma had leaked through the tinfoil wrapping and paper bag and all down my jeans. I have been a long time neighbor and customer here. The food is usually good and a great value. My one gripe with it is that sometimes the falafels are cold by the time you eat them. The textures aren't the most appetizing. I thought I would counter-act this by asking if they could heat up the fries before they put them in my deluxe falafel... and the answer--- "No, that's the way we do it." me, "But sometimes the falafel is really cold in the middle and I prefer it hot.", him, "No, that's how we do it.", me, "Ok, I will go somewhere else." Finally tried Taboun after driving past it so many times. I got a chicken shawarma with hot sauce and my boyfriend got the lamb and beef shawarma with no hot sauce. Both wraps were huge and savory, but I preferred the lamb and beef over the chicken. The hot sauce was delicious, though. It added a nice flavor without being overpowering. Wraps are affordable and location is nice-- right next to UCSF and I think UCSF employees get 10% off! Would definitely recommend :) read more
