    Waiting for my Falafel Balls
    Jeff W.

Hidden treasure on Geary! Service is friendly and the star of the spot is definitely the falafel deep Fried chick pea balls. Eaten fresh is so savory and scrumptious. Paired with the fresh daily made hummus and warm pita bread. boom . Hits the spot every time. Ambiance is local deli spot. Best falafel since my experience in Paris ! Iykyk JYW highly recommends.

Felt rushed and their hummus which my coworker bought wasn't as good as the Farmer's Market hummus. So I bought the pomegranate lemonade and for $5 it was bitter and just a meh. Would rather have Wetzel Pretzels lemonade, for realz!

I've wanted to try Hummus Bodega for quite some time based on all the positive reviews. I asked my friend to accompany me. She is Jewish on one side of her family. Hummus Bodega's corner location on Geary may seem unassuming at first glance but the space quickly warms up once you enter and start studying the simple overhead menu. I ordered the Shawarma Plate and my friend requested the Falafel sandwich with fries. I also ordered an additional side of hummus because the Yelp pictures of it looked so creamy and good! I also tried an in-house lemonade beverage. We were utterly blown away by everything we ate. My friend exclaimed, "I've never had Tel Aviv food before. This place is incredible!" she even commented that the French fries were the best she had ever eaten. I am fortunate that I can visit San Francisco on a regular basis. I cannot wait to return to Hummus Bodega to try even more of the menu items especially the crispy chicken and the fried eggplant. This casual cafe is definitely worth the cross-town drive or MUNI bus ride no matter where you are staying in the City!

A coworker raved about this spot and said that she loves their hummus, so I had lunch here on a Wednesday afternoon. This is indeed a bodega that sells hummus, as well as baked goods, condiments, desserts, and spreads. Order at the counter, and your food will be brought to you. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. There was a monthly special advertised when I visited: The Persian Kebab. The friendly cashier told me that it was made with beef & lamb, and he was planning on eating that for lunch later, so I decided to try it out! Persian Kebab Plate: Persian Kebab (4 pcs), hummus w/warm chickpeas, Israeli chopped salad, cabbage, pickles, split pea soup, and pita ($27.00 + tax). +Huge portion! I had the leftovers with some rice for dinner. +Persian Kebab was nicely charred on the outside yet moist on the inside. As someone who eats lamb, I enjoyed it but if you don't like the gaminess it may not be for you. +Hummus was smooth, rich, and not overly salty. Chickpeas on top were a nice touch. +Normally, I'm not a fan of split pea soup, but since it was cold I opted for that over fries or rice. It was delicious and I think they made me a fan. +Pita was fluffy and warm. I wish there was more than one! -Israeli chopped salad, cabbage, pickles provided freshness, but I wish some of the veggies weren't tart. *Verdict: Quite expensive for a fast casual spot, but the food is well-prepared, and portions are generous.

The food was delicious, but the service was disappointing and the price was high. We arrived in the mid afternoon for a late lunch and the place was busy. Our order was promised in 5-10 minutes, which seemed overly optimistic given the obvious staffing shortage. We had to bus a dirty table ourselves since the staff was preoccupied with other matters (taking orders, trying to placate another irate/entitled group, and running orders). The eating area was also fairly dirty, overall. When our order finally arrived (in take out containers since they seemed to have run out of dishes), it was very tasty. The Persian kabobs were juicy, the pita perfectly puffy, and the hummus incredibly textured. We may have arrived at an off day, and look forward to trying again--hopefully after they have time to hire and train more staff.

    Hummus Falafel Bowl ($19)

In the neighborhood and hungry I texted my sons: "meet me at Hummus Bodega in about 10 minutes and I'll buy". Not surprisingly, this impromptu invitation bought them both to the table. My younger son barely looked at the menu. He likes someone to make a recommendation and he likes things that he's not had before. He went with the recommended Pita Shawarma ($23, made with chicken) and a drink with its identity written in a language other than English (turned out to be grape juice). I opted for a Hummus Falafel Bowl ($19). Both this and the Shawarma benefited from the addition of the Mango Sauce and the hot pepper mix (both available upon request). When my older son arrived he remarked "I've walked by this place a lot but never been in because the prices... whew". This caused my younger son to notice those prices as I'd already done; they're probably the highest I've seen for this type of food in this type of space. The food is good and, even though only one of us added a drink, a meal for three ran about $75. So: very good food, somewhat overpriced, and in a space that, visually, doesn't merit the expense. That said, there's this: The menu confused and overwhelmed me a bit and even left me wishing for photos of everything. I came home and looked on-line and see that I somehow missed the "Exploding Eggplant" which others rave about and some other things I'd really like to try. A return visit may be in order. If you want this cuisine, your portfolio is thriving, and you aren't looking for fancy digs in which to consume it all, Hummus Bodega will definitely satisfy.

I wanted something light for lunch and stopped by this place. Between 2 people, we shared the Bodega Style Hummus Bowl and it was probably the best hummus I ever had! The hummus is creamy and flavorful. We got the bowl with an extra pita and added an egg. Their pita is so fluffy and comes out very warm! I definitely recommend ordering extra pita if you're sharing their hummus bowls. This is a small restaurant with limited seating, so we got our food for to-go. I definitely recommend trying out this spot if you're in the area. I'd come back again to try their other dishes!

The hummus didn't taste like much, I think store bought is better sadly. I liked the location. I didn't like the quality. Thanks

Large portions. They offer a more diverse menu than you see in many Middle Eastern restaurants.

    Is your restaurant kosher?

    It is Kosher, yes.

Is the fried eggplant gluten free?

I am sorryi don't know but employees are very friendly. Gove them a call during less busy hours.

Is this under same ownership as Frena, just rebranding to a new concept?

    New owners partnered with Frena

Is it order ahead? I looked in and there was the temporary closure sign on an open door. I didn't feel comfortable just walking through the door.

When we arrived at around 7:30 pm, there were tables available. It's a comfortable cafe-like restaurant with mural paintings on the wall. Service was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the food wasn't as good as the ambiance and waitstaff. ***OUR PICKS*** BEEF SHAWERMA ENTREE ~ the beef was overly salted, saffron rice was ok, hummus was really thick, like peanut butter. My guy ordered this and thought it was average. 3/5 LAMB SHISH KEBAB WRAP ~ this was my dish. I ate one half of the wrap and it only held two cubes of lamb meat. The lettuce and tomatoes made the wrap bland. The meat was seasoned, but everything was plain, so it needed more seasoning. Honestly, this was missing flavor! I'll have to add something to it when I eat the rest of this wrap at home. 2.5/5 HALF ROASTED CHICKEN AND RICE ~ Our friend ordered this dish. It needed more sumac. This tasted like plain roasted chicken. Maybe it needs more seasoning while marinating. It wasn't dry, so that's a relief. Rice was ok and it wasn't dry or soggy. 3.5 We've been spoiled and have had better food in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Nothing stood out for any of us. Prices are a bit high for what you get. Sadly, probably won't be back.

We loved the Combo appetizer plate which came with generous portions of 9 different items. I loved everything ! I'm an eggplant lover and two of the dips were eggplant based . My new favorite dip is the Mercimek Kofte which is a red lentil based chunky dip ; I would've guessed garbanzo bean based dip. The Haydari dip was also super addictive, a thick creamy dip made of kefir cheese and Greek yogurt. So many delicious but gut healthy items of the combo plate; which comes with thin lavash bread. Also loved the red lentil soup, which was warming on a rainy day. I thought it was flavorful without being overly spiced or too thick. My husband enjoyed the lamb kebabs. Tender juicy cuts of lamb that were well seasoned , comes on a bed of salad and rice. We also liked the charred red peppers and onions on the kebab . Service was sufficient Overall great little find for dinner !

I personally got the Kofte Kebab which filled me up. I had enough to bring home for lunch the next day. Getting a frozen yogurt at Easy Breezy is a must afterwards!!
