My parents and I really loved our lunch today! We each got a Persian Kebab plate and shared some falafels. We had more food than we could eat! Very generous portions. The kebabs were so juicy and perfectly seasoned, the fries were soft on the inside and so crispy on the outside, the hummus was delicious and the falafels were the best I've had in years!!! I've wanted to try Hummus Bodega for quite some time based on all the positive reviews. I asked my friend to accompany me. She is Jewish on one side of her family. Hummus Bodega's corner location on Geary may seem unassuming at first glance but the space quickly warms up once you enter and start studying the simple overhead menu. I ordered the Shawarma Plate and my friend requested the Falafel sandwich with fries. I also ordered an additional side of hummus because the Yelp pictures of it looked so creamy and good! I also tried an in-house lemonade beverage. We were utterly blown away by everything we ate. My friend exclaimed, "I've never had Tel Aviv food before. This place is incredible!" she even commented that the French fries were the best she had ever eaten. I am fortunate that I can visit San Francisco on a regular basis. I cannot wait to return to Hummus Bodega to try even more of the menu items especially the crispy chicken and the fried eggplant. This is indeed a bodega that sells hummus, as well as baked goods, condiments, desserts, and spreads. Order at the counter, and your food will be brought to you. We live in the East Bay and ordered Hummus Bodega from Doordash which I think means it comes from a different location, but in any case we loved it. The hummus is gloriously smooth! My spouse liked the beef shawarma being shredded so it would make a good sandwich in the pita, but maybe enjoyed the chicken breast more in itself. I liked both , found the beef gets a little dry on reheating as most beef dishes do, adding a little water helped. Fries were absolutely delicious and crispy. We ordered extra Israeli salad along with the plates and it held up well in the refrigerator. Tel Aviv plate was also fabulous, the fried eggplant is fantastic, fun to mix with shawarma. We didn't love the halva mousse, the chocolate layer was pleasant but overall just not to our taste. We both adore the pita which is so fluffy and soft and came warm. We recommend getting extra. Our order was promised in 5-10 minutes, which seemed overly optimistic given the obvious staffing shortage. We had to bus a dirty table ourselves since the staff was preoccupied with other matters (taking orders, trying to placate another irate/entitled group, and running orders). The eating area was also fairly dirty, overall. When our order finally arrived (in take out containers since they seemed to have run out of dishes), it was very tasty. The Persian kabobs were juicy, the pita perfectly puffy, and the hummus incredibly textured. My younger son barely looked at the menu. He likes someone to make a recommendation and he likes things that he's not had before. He went with the recommended Pita Shawarma ($23, made with chicken) and a drink with its identity written in a language other than English (turned out to be grape juice). I opted for a Hummus Falafel Bowl ($19). Both this and the Shawarma benefited from the addition of the Mango Sauce and the hot pepper mix (both available upon request). When my older son arrived he remarked "I've walked by this place a lot but never been in because the prices... whew". This caused my younger son to notice those prices as I'd already done; they're probably the highest I've seen for this type of food in this type of space. The food is good and, even though only one of us added a drink, a meal for three ran about $75. So: very good food, somewhat overpriced, and in a space that, visually, doesn't merit the expense. That said, there's this: The menu confused and overwhelmed me a bit and even left me wishing for photos of everything. I came home and looked on-line and see that I somehow missed the "Exploding Eggplant" which others rave about and some other things I'd really like to try. A return visit may be in order. Service was as expected and good. The menus this time was poor. Why? Just slap your palm over most items because they weren't available. No falafel for lunch? Sad. No Shashuka at all? Almost a sin!!! Getting to the Bathroom is a very tight fit and can be blocked at times because of stock, and people. You can usually find a parking spot within a half block. I live in the Outer Richmond neighborhood. I have been going here since this place opened. Today I ordered the wrap sandwich. Very disappointing experience overall. First of all the man working the counter had terrible customer service. He never explained what was in the wrap. When my order came it was this huge wrap that was cold. Not even the pita bread was heated. The wrap was filled with pickles. Overall, the filling was bland and overly salty. I am a huge fan of wrap sandwiches, and quite frankly this is one of the worst wrap sandwiches I have ever had.
