Baba Ghanouj
Katie R.

Came here for lunch because I was in desperate need of some Mediterranean food, which isn't all too easy to come by in the sunset. We ordered a Chicken shawarma plate, side of falafels, Baba Ghanouj, and 2 Kibbeh. Winners were the falafels and the hummus (came with the shawarma plate), the falafels were probably some of the better ones I've had, and there's just something about a super creamy homemade hummus. The shawarma seemed to have more onion than it did chicken, which was a bummer at over $20 a plate, it was also shredded super thin, so there were a lot of bites that were 80% onion. I'd probably try a kebab next time to enjoy something more meaty. Service was friendly and food came up pretty quickly even though it was one guy working and someone had placed an order right before us.

Solid falafel here. Fried fresh to order, seasoned nicely, and not oily tasting at all. Light and crispy, I could eat so many of these. A dozen for $12.

This location has been around for a while now since 1984. The first time I ever ate a falafel it came from here , leave it to Unc to show us the way. This is the flag ship store, It's definitely seen better days. Although the parking maybe difficult I come here for a consistent falafel. A dozen for $10 or $6 for half a dozen. It's definitely not as Prestige as it once size and taste but there's a reason why they been here the longest

The falafel here is the actual best I've ever had! Great service, plenty of space to eat inside, and lots of delicious options to choose from. Hot lentil soup was good too!

Date: 8/24/2024 Time: 2:35 PM 71° Sunny No, I did not travel to San Francisco to purchase an avocado falafel sandwich, hummus and pita bread. It is quite a way (about 10 miles) from Oakland Chinatown. There are at least four trucks at this event. Jollof is one of the vendors, and Sunrise Deli's is also at the 35th Oakland Chinatown Street Fest. Jollof does not accept cash, but Sunrise does. Okay, I opt for the latter. I want something different. I already have eaten a chicken cage pastry (gai loong) from Big Dish Restaurant. Upon perusing Sunrise's menu board, the description of the avocado falafel sandwich appears delicious. Another thing, I don't remember the last time I had hummus. Gentleman assisting me is friendly and pleasant. No line at this food truck. The food is prepared fresh. Cost is $23. I give him a $5.00 tip for prompt service. I am content and happy Sunrise Deli is here at Street Fest to serve me lunch. My sandwich and hummus are on point.

1. The place is really dirty inside. The napkin holder, tables, and walls are all sticky from old grease. Because of the poor ventilation, all the cooking grease settles on every surface. Can't they just grab some cleaner and wipe it down? The dining area is combined with the storage room, so half the space is piled up with boxes and bags. 2. The staff is completely unfriendly. The employee didn't even say hello, didn't smile, didn't offer any drinks. They just don't seem to care about customers at all. And it's not like they were busy--I was the only person there the whole time. 3. The food. I ordered a chicken shawarma plate, but it's nothing like what you'd expect when you order that dish. Normally it comes with a side of rice, and the meat is roasted on a vertical spit. Here, the guy just pulled some fried chicken with onions out of the fridge and heated it up in the microwave, pita included. No side dish at all. The meat was overcooked, half onions and half chicken. I've never seen shawarma served like that. The vegetable salad was definitely not fresh--it had a strong sour smell, probably from lemon or vinegar they added to hide how old it was.

$50 for this?"It's from Turkey" he said. We should have walked out. They were cold and hard. This had to be from an expired box in the back

I've been going to the Sunrise Deli location in the Inner Sunset since the 1990s. It's a place I used to visit with family, friends, and anyone I wanted to introduce to what I believed was the best falafel in town. Sadly, I can't say that anymore. After my most recent visit, I will never return. My sister was visiting from out of town, and we decided to stop by for some falafel and Turkish delight (lokum). I'm Turkish and have grown up eating lokum since I was an infant, straight from Turkey. We were excited to see the offerings when we walked in and wanted to buy everything. We saw about 10 pieces of lokum on display and asked to buy all of them. The older gentleman at the counter mentioned he had more in the back and asked how many we wanted. We requested 50 pieces, and when he brought them out, he charged us $50--$1 per piece! He claimed the lokum was from Turkey, justifying the high price, but we felt completely taken advantage of. Lokum has always been sold by weight, and we've never paid anything close to this amount. Ever. Even from Turkey. When we tried to dispute the cost, we were faced with pushback, leaving us frustrated and unheard. Despite this, we decided to order 12 falafel, but our experience went from bad to worse. The falafel was undercooked, and the lokum was stale and hard. If it truly came from Turkey, it must have been sitting around for a long time because authentic Turkish delight is always soft and fresh. This was a heartbreaking experience. What once was a place I cherished has left me feeling disappointed and disrespected. It's especially disheartening to feel as though we may have been treated unfairly due to assumptions about us. Shame on the man for taking advantage of customers and serving subpar food. I can't recommend this place anymore and will not be returning. Ever.

Sunrise Deli offers solid Middle Eastern cuisine in the Sunset neighborhood. I went with the vegetarian combo platter. This came with Tabouli, babaghanouj, hummus, rice & lentils, tomato & cucumber salad, with falafel & dolma, served with pita bread. It was a solid meal. Lots of vegan options on the menu. Recommended if in the area.

Exterior, easy to walk by it. Next to the corner grocery store.

Falafel was so delicious that I bought a dozen to bring home. I also had the chicken kebab and picked 2 sides. I've been coming here for decades. Wonderful small local dining.

The most disappointing lamb shawarma platter I've ever had. Salty and covered completely in hummus. No rice, no onions nothing.

It was like eating in a private garden, surrounded by a nice floral arrangement. The food was superb. Highest quality. The salad appetizers were fresh & crunchy. The feta cheese & small lavash breads were a great way to start. See the mains in the photos. My lamb chops & beef/lamb skewer was excellent. My sons raved about their salmon & beef. The rice was perfect: real longer grained basmati, delicately spiced, with hints a saffron. I loved the roasted tomato, raw onions, cilantro, & mint leaves. Of course plenty of lavash. Easily a 4.5. I'd give a 5, but my wife said her chicken was a little dry. Still tasty, especially with her rice that had raisins, dates, & lentils. Maybe nit picking, but overall good. The Napoleon with a scoop of raspberry ice cream was excellent. This Napoleon wasn't so creamy, but more about layers of cake. More complex than the usual variant. I'm a fan. The drinks were on point. Great ambiance & waiter. Great portions & value for this level of quality. Lavash takes pride in what they do. We will be back for great Persian cuisine.

I never get chicken at any other Mediterranean spot,…read morebut this place really does it right--love both their Chicken Shawarma ($18) and Muskan rolls ($16). Good portions that easily give me 2 meals in one dish, and they reheat nicely. Note that the Muskan rolls come with 3 rolls (not 4 as pictured on DoorDash). Garlic sauce is great to dip prior to each bite. Also like their Muhammara ($14) which is a red pepper based dip, and their hummus with lamb/beef shawarma ($14). Get a pita ($2) or two to eat these with. Our orders have been consistently correct and packaged nicely. Try this place and thank me later!

Pretty good I would say! I didn't have much, but I did have a couple key items that gave me a…read morepretty good idea. I started with the lentil soup, and that was enjoyable. I added lemon, as it needed it. The lemon on the side they give is a slice or 2 of lemon. Slice is usually for garnish decor, or you can put slices inside something, like a fish dish, and cook with it, etc. A lentil soup or a Tabuleh, which is the other item I ordered... These both needed lemon. Even if it was spot-on perfect, we all know that person who wants more lemon. And that guy is going to be crying with citric acid in its eyes and all over his date. So you need to put lemon wedges, not slices. This way we can actually squeeze the lemon without it getting all over the fingers, eyes and the person sitting next to us. I didn't understand this very basic error. The tabuleh was also good. Things were good. The coffee was also good. I didn't get wowed like Arabian Knights tabuleh, or other items, as Arabian KNights, the flavors hit all the notes really well! But it was decent. If you were on Yelp and about to say "Well, it was OK....", it was 2 notches better than OK....It was good! I am not complaining! Seriously, no complaints. Service was attentive. Inside was actually very nice, nice tables, and seating, rather welcoming. In fact, if you were looking for a date night, and the date was more into a less hip, or noisy dinner spot, this would be it. If your date was looking for a dinner, with more of a night vibe with hookas, and smoking, and music, and perhaps a more fastive, group type atmosphere, I would say Arabian Knights....Both can do either, but... This is getting long. I'm out!

Stopped by for lunch with friends after our Double Black run. Really enjoyed our meal here…read more Everything we ordered was delicious and full of flavor, and you can tell there is a lot of care that goes into the food. We tried a few different dishes and enjoyed everything we ordered. The flavors were well balanced and the portions were generous enough to share, which made it easy to try a little bit of everything. The service was also warm and attentive, and the overall atmosphere felt welcoming and relaxed. It's the kind of place that feels casual enough for a quick meal but still special enough to sit down and really enjoy dinner. They have a lot of outdoor seating as well (with heat lamps for the colder SF nights). Parking in the area can be challenging, would suggest to come for lunch instead of dinner.

They have a menu behind the counter that lists out all of the GF modifications (which is so helpful) just ask for it. You can also join the waitlist on yelp, which is a big time saver and so convenient. Why 3 stars then? I feel like they have become a victim of their own success. This place is tiny and it is PACKED. We were quoted a 70 minute wait time on a Sunday night. When our name finally came up we were offered a tiny table inside (outside table sidewalks are where you want to be, more room, good people watching) that could have fit two fine but was going to be a squeeze for 3 adults. We opted to wait for a bigger table/outside spot. Once you get a table then you have to go inside and wait in line to order. The space is small so expect to get bumped from every direction. The person behind the register was obviously stressed out and could not have been less friendly or less helpful. I asked for a glass of cabernet and she just said, we don't have it and stared at me. I asked if she could suggest another option and she did but it was a struggle. All of the workers seemed miserable. No one smiled, everyone seemed overworked and it was so hard to flag someone down if say your steak came out entirely raw, which mine did. It seems like the workers are either not getting the training or the support that they need to allow the overall experience to be good as the food.
