Favorite dishes: 1. The dip platter is pretty exceptional, offering a little bit of everything when it comes to texture as well as flavor. This is because you can choose what you would like! I honestly don't think you can go wrong with any options on the menu for dips, but I would try to vary it up so you have one spiced, one spicy (slight difference here!), and one roasted! Not-so-favorite: 1. The spinach flatbread came highly recommended (other reviews said the beef one wasn't so good, so we got the spinach flatbread). However, it had a bit of a strange drizzle on it that was sweet, and didn't really go well with the flatbread's overall flavor. Thus, I would not really recommend it. I came here one weekday afternoon for lunch. You go up to the counter to order and then pick a table to sit at, the staff will bring the order to you. I got the chicken shawarma plate which comes with a salad, hummus and pita. The salad was a bit too tart for me, but eating it with the rest of the meal was well balanced. The hummus was smooth and went well with the warm pita. The chicken shawarma with the rice was delicious - lots of chicken over the rice and nicely seasoned. Food came out hot and fresh. This time I had chicken Shawarma wrap. It was huge. Ate half only. Full of chicken. I didn't like their coleslaw, too much mayo. They also gave me condiment mayo. Not sure where to start. My wife and I were out on a long walk building up an appetite in Sunset Dunes when we decided to look for some Mediterranean food and found this on the map. I gotta say, we were very pleased! The food was fresh and different from the common dishes you find elsewhere in the city. We got the fried cauliflower which surprised the hell out us. They were not deep fried and overly battered, they were lightly fried on the outside, crispy and soft on the inside with great zesty flavor! The spicy hummus was flavorful with a drizzle of high quality olive oil. The pita is soft and lightly toasted, goes really well with the hummus. I don't think you'll be disappointed with anything on the menu... I wasn't. Finally, great people working the restaurant. Had a great chat with the owner. I've had four meals from Zitouna - two take out and two eat-in. The food is consistently great ~ and my adult sons agree with me on that. Even more importantly, though, is that these folks are the warmest, nicest people. And that's been true both when the restaurant was pretty quiet at lunch and also when they were slammed at dinner time. I ordered through DoorDash today, and I went in for pick up. Food came out quick and I was on my way. When I go to eat my meal, I notice the order is wrong. I call the restaurant and the owner tells me to come back. I come back and show him the wrong order. The owner confirms and he assures me he will make it right. The food came out relatively quick, and the owner was kind enough to also give me an assortment of baklava! This restaurant is absolutely amazing. Take it from a person that services 2,500+ restaurants and has eaten at many over the course of 3 decades in SF. It easily ranks Top 50 of all time in any cuisine and quite possibly Top 25. I would even rank it against an upscale restaurant that requires a jacket to seat. The ambiance is vibrant and very clean. Their service is always met with a genuine kindness. Their shawarma plates are great and the shawarma salads are enormous! They can easily feed two people or save half for later. One dish I want to emphasize is the mechwia dip. The way they combine these ingredients to be so flavorful makes this such a good dish, I sometimes come just for this dip if I'm in the area. Cane here with two good friends on a cold and rainy Friday night. The hardest part of the outing was finding parking! I drove around for about 15 minutes until the parking gods smiled upon me and I snagged a spot on the same block! My friend did not have such luck and had to park about a 20 minute walk away! Not Zitounas fault at all but be fair warned that parking in this area can be challenging. On to the food, ambience and service! The ambience is welcoming and simple. The decor is minimal with murals and if I recall correctly some framed artwork. Very cafe eatery vibes. This is a sit down restaurant where you order at the cashier with a staff member and they give you a number. We were able to order our appetizers first and then our entrees later and split the bill. They give you a number so the servers know where to bring the food and all orders on assigned to that number. The portions are humongous. In the Bay Area I've gotten used to paying for a $20 salad but when it came out, I am not joking - this salad could feed a family of four! It was a large plate liked high with fresh romaine, tasty juicy chicken, halloumi cheese and cucumbers. Wow it was so good! We had also ordered appetizers. And I had a cup of their lentil soup. We had the sample dip combo plate where we were able to choose 4 different dips. We chose two hummus, one spicy dip. (Can't remember the name) and babaganoush. The pita bread is warm and fresh and each dip was addicting, fresh and so full of flavor. They know how to do it right! More entrees! One friend ordered the salmon plate which was also a generous portion and could be shared by two people easily. My other friend ordered one of the wraps which was amazing. Tender meat and so flavorful. We all took home enough leftovers for a whole other meal! I shared my leftover salad with my husband for lunch h the next day! I ordered the moussaka because I wanted to try the Mediterranean version of lasagna since I'm a huge lasagna fan. To my surprise, it arrived more like a stew. At first, I thought my order had been mixed up, but it was explained to me that the Greek version resembles lasagna, while the Lebanese version is prepared as a stew. The stew featured a rich tomato sauce with eggplant and chickpeas, and I added beef and lamb meatballs for extra protein. It was absolutely delicious and incredibly comforting. I'd also highly recommend the mint lemonade -- it was the perfect palate cleanser. We'll definitely be adding this spot to our regular rotation.
