I was excited to try this place, I was up from Los Angeles for the weekend, visiting my mother & brother and found this place online. Great reviews! My aunt called to make a reservation and they told her they were fully booked for Sat night. My mother then called about 30 mins later and got a reservation (??). Anyhoo. We arrived on time and were seated in an empty restaurant. There were 2 or 3 tables-max 5 tables the entire time we were there-its neither here nor there, but I thought it interesting that they said they were fully booked when we were there for 2 hrs+ and by the time we left, closer to 8pm, it still was empty. Just an observation. Our waiter was nice, polite, although I did ask for the wine menu and he said he had it right here, pointing to it in his hand--and then promptly turned and walked away for 5 mins. (?) I ordered the cheese plate, very meh..and the melba toast "crostinis" were disappointing. They gave me a few green grapes and they were already a bit withered and shrunken with age. I was very surprised they would serve old fruit. They had 2 pecans on the cheese plate (lol). It was the tiniest cheese plate I have ever seen-the pieces of cheese were miniscule, to the regular small wedge of cheese you get. They were thin slices of cheese. I got the Jager Schnitzel as my main course. It was just a hair before I'd call it full on dry--there was barely any "Jaeger sauce" maybe a tablespoon and a half and as someone who has lived in Europe for 12 yrs, many years in Germany, it is served with much more flavorful sauce with mushrooms. Very meh, the sauce had no taste, zero. Proper Jaeger Schnitzel has a wonderful savory mushroom sauce...even the lemon wedge looked sad and dried out, that it was served with. My brother had the Caesar salad, it was seriously disappointing. On the menu it mentioned anchovies on the Caesar salad-there werent any--unless they were alluding to the dressing (?) that is an ingredient to all Caesar salad dressings, listing anchovies as description of the salad connotates it part of the salad (?) My mother ordered the Moroccan beef short ribs tagine. Usually when they mention tagine, its served in a single tagine dish, which would have been much nicer presentation wise and proving it was actually cooked in a tagine. I ordered wine and it was decent. The best part of the meal was the vanilla ice cream w/ Himalayan sea salt. The food was really sub-par for what they advertise. The restaurant is pleasant. Nice jazz music. Oh and my brother had the $40 rib eye and the potato serving was 3 table spoons of potato. I'm not looking for a chain restaurant serving--not at all...but for $40, it could have been a little more, especially for a man. I dine at Catch in Century City, LA, Dan Tana's, The Polo Lounge & Craigs in LA regularly and the food is divine, and they are not as stingy--and they definitely do not serve old fruit or 2 pecans on their cheese plates. At the end of the meal, we asked for the bill, we split it between 2 credit cards and when we received our receipts, they had added on the tip for 3 people!!!! I have to say, without even acknowleging first, that they would do so, which I thought was really tacky---but my mother, who is elderly, almost double tipped them...I caught it at the end. But why would you add the tip to a party of 3??? Do we appear cheap? I'm a professional in the legal field and didnt think I appeared as if I wouldnt leave a tip. All through law school I waitressed so I usually leave a 20%+ tip if the service is good. My mom is a notorious over tipper. I just thought "hmmmmmm" wow...weird. Ok, we saved some bucks as we both would have given him more..but um, really?? I really wanted to love this place and have it be a go to place to take my mom to when I come up from LA...alas!! the food is MEH...and then adding the gratuity on for 3 people was offputting and I think disingenuous to not say they are adding their own gratuity on our bill.
The beagle walking from table to table constantly is cute for a bit, then I think its kinda bizarre...for the 20th time he came up begging off of my plate...yeah...ummm...really? I adore/love animals but I wouldnt allow my dog to do that to customers.
Overall, if you've not had proper Moroccan tagine or Schnitzel, you might like this, but for me, it was a hard miss for all of the details put together. Really disappointing, I really thought this would be the go to lunch spot, brunch spot & dinner spot for me and my mother when I come up to Sacramento to visit every month. :/ read more
