I came here for dinner to celebrate the holidays with colleagues from work. I honestly never noticed this spot as frequently as I drive up and down Folsom Boulevard. I accidentally walked into their cafe that is connected to their restaurant, but took the opportunity to quickly check out their menu. I ordered the Pomegranate French 75 Chicken Kabob, which came with a side of Roasted Potatoes and Arugula Salad. The food was tasty, but I was a bit disappointed with the portion size considering the price ($26). Overall, I enjoyed the ambiance/vibe, the service was quick, and parking was relatively easy considering the location. Would not be my go-to restaurant for Mediterranean food, but they do have a variety of entrees to offer on their menu. read more

Also got the pakora which was ok and kinda too greasy for my taste. For my entree I got the saffron chicken with spinach rice and pumpkin. We have been wanting to try this place for a long time and finally made it for dinner! We were not sure how busy it would be the day after the Fourth of July but we lucked out and it was nice and quiet. They have a coffee bar and also serve brunch on the weekends. They also have lunch and happy hour. We were especially interested in the afghan menu items and decided to try that from our appetizer thru dessert. We had the Mantu steamed dumplings to start followed by the Saffron Chicken & Kabuli Palow. Both were really flavorful and would definitely recommend! My favorite was the Kabuli Palow which is the beef shoulder, cauliflower and basmati rice dish. The beef was really tender and the rice was very flavorful with raisins and almonds. We ended dinner with dessert trying the Saffron Ferni which is gluten free milk based custard with cardamom, rose water and pistachios. While it was not my cup a tea it did have good flavor and was still a winner for our table. I really want to give a shout out to our server Melinda who was absolutely wonderful. She was attentive and took the time to share highlights of the items on the menu and her recommendations on the best dishes. She had a great sense of humor and was a breath of fresh air as often we feel like we are being rushed when we are dining out. This felt like our experience mattered. On our second visit, again for lunch. We parked in the lot behind the establishment. Some guy was turbo cleaning his sinuses with monster snot rockets. IYKYK GROSS! I can't believe I had never heard of this place before, and I've been in Sacramento for over a decade. We had a lunch of appetizers, and everything was amazing. I was shocked at how good the crab cakes were, I'll be coming back for that specifically. Favorite part was they have a dog menu! We had dinner at Brickland and tried three dishes... Kabuli Palow, Saffron Chicken, and the New York Steak, and all of them were great. The Kabuli Palow came with tender pieces of beef in a flavorful sauce, paired with a mound of rice studded with carrots and raisins. It had a nice balance of savory and slightly sweet, and the meat was cooked just right. The Saffron Chicken was juicy and well-seasoned, served with a vibrant green spinach rice that really stood out. The puree tied everything together without being overpowering. The New York Steak was cooked to a perfect medium-rare, very tender, and served with layered potatoes and roasted carrots, a great mix of textures and flavors on the plate. The atmosphere was very nice, modern but comfortable, not too busy or crowded, so it was easy to relax and enjoy the food. Service was friendly and attentive without hovering. Finally was seated and the server while only being his second day was polite and asked for assistance when he was unsure of what their house sparkling was. Food was good, I had the burrito and my husband had the poached eggs with poached salmon. He had no complaints re the eggs but wanted a toasted English muffin and the potatoes more crisp as well. His comment was that everything was the same texture, soft. My burrito was tasty and I enjoyed the feta side dip despite it not making any sense. If you go stay away from the house sparkling as it is a 6.50 bottle of sweet sparking grape juice sold for 6.50 at total wine. I feel a 350% markup is not acceptable. They listed Domaine Carneros as being a French champagne. It is actually a very nice sparkling house in Napa and I love their sparkling wines. Overall the food and ambiance is nice and relaxing and serving sizes are acceptable. Our waiter did great for his second day. read more

Glad we had reservations for a Saturday night! We showed up a little early and the place was packed. Parking is in the lot behind the restaurant which is great due to how busy it gets and the street parking can get tight. Inside is simple contemporary with that comfortable 'brick' feel since it IS "Brickland". The room is loud and where we were seated in the thoroughfare was a bit buzzy so be prepared to talk loud to your fellow diners. The hosts (owners) were very nice and noticeable as they toured the floor checking on things throughout the evening. There is also a large bar area in the back of the dining area. Brickland is a combo Afghan, pizza/pasta and American faire restaurant. We of course choose to enjoy the food of the owners, and went with Afghan. Started with the house soup. Good and rich, but just needed a little something else to give it that extra kick of flavor. Next we had the Kadoo Bolani - Crispy grilled philo dough with butternut squash and spices. These were pretty good For the main course we both had the Kabuli Palow - "Loaded" basmati rice with beef shoulder cuts and sauteed cauliflower. This dish was excellent on all points. Very good. What didn't go right was that we sat waiting for someone to come to our table for quite a while. I was reaching that 'twitchy' mode just before the server finally came over to greet us. I ordered a cocktail, and we decided that we had better get the appetizer order in now... Our orders were placed, and the food did come out as it all should have. The appetizer plates were not cleared before the person serving the main courses came out, which made it super awkward to negotiate all these plates on a tiny 2 top table. And our server never did come back to check on us until we were completely finished with our meals and waiting for the check. For Christmas, I task my sister for gifting me with a meal from restaurants I have yet to try. I am glad she chose this one, as I believe this is only the second Afghan restaurant I have dined at. I ordered the saffron chicken, which came with spinach rice and a pumpkin puree. The rice was seasoned perfectly, and both the chicken and rice mixed amazingly with the puree. I don't believe I left anything on the plate. I started with a basic Caesar salad, and although I had to ask for some extra dressing, once I received it, it was a good salad. The dressing was homemade. I finished with a mini cheesecake, which was complimented well with its berry sauce. My server was respectfully attentive, in that I got to relax with my food and my thoughts, but my soda was refilled without being asked. A little expensive for a weekly dining experience, but for a special occasion out with family or friends who want to taste something different, then I think you should try this place. Hesitantly, she said yes and mentioned they would be closing within the hour then sat us. First impressions matter and this slightly upset me. Our server, whose name I forgot or didn't catch, was great. The experience with her kind of made up for the initial encounter with the hostess. There is bar, patio, and of course indoor seating. Due to us arriving late in the evening I didn't get a good look outside for specifics. I ordered the sliders - 1 crispy chicken sandwich and 1 wagyu beef. Beef burger was meaty & juicy yet could've used a bit more seasoning, even some salt. Chicken sandwich was a big let down. Crispy but had the burnt bitter taste and although the inside was tender and juicy it was SUPER bland. Glad I got one of each rather than both being chicken. Recommend the beef over chicken if you're being indecisive. Fries were your typical salted shoe string fries. As nice as this restaurant was and had a lot of delicious menu options I don't think I will be coming back again. I don't care for places that don't care for my presence as customer... I dined in at Brickland for the first time with my girlfriend, so a nice Thursday night dinner. Once we arrived we decided to sit indoors and we're sat at a nice table near the back by the window. I think I expected it to be more of a puree type of drink with real fruit flavoring. Like I've had before with other Blood Orange sodas, but instead it was just like a regular soda; so kind of disappointing there. The Pakora appetizer was really delicious, especially when paired with both of the dipping sauces. The grilled Octopus I felt could have been seared a little longer, with a greater char. The skin was a little slimy and jelly like, and too much for my liking. Without the skin the Octopus was a lot more palatable for me. The Tiramisu my girlfriend and I shared, and it was really delicious and thoroughly enjoyed. Overall: Nice ambiance, and good food and dessert. As a long time Sacramento resident, I'm upset that I hadn't tried this spot sooner - make no mistake, it's worth it. The ambience alone is nice - big area and it's essentially a split restaurant and coffee shop (Brick Cafe). Service was straight forward and friendly, and the wait wasn't too bad. Parking is limited but not overly frustrating. Food options are sufficient, as there are a number of gluten free entrees, and any pizza can be made on cauliflower crust. However, no gf appetizers, salads or sides was a little disappointing. About the food: I had the Brie-lliant Prosciutto pizza - toppings also included grapes, pine nuts, and a spicy honey. Thoroughly enjoyed this! The cauliflower crust is on the thin side as per usual of gf alternatives, but the taste was all there. I definitely want to visit more to try the other pizza options. To start the meal we shared a butternut soup with sunflower seeds - one of the best I had every experienced. I've written a review on this restaurant before but wanted to discuss their monthly wine pairing event hosted by well known wine critic and author Rick Kushman. If you haven't attended it's one of the best deals in Sacramento. Rick works with executive chef Karel to pair wines from around the world as well as regional wineries and dishes especially created by Karel. Rick talks about each wine. He has you taste the different wines before the food course is served and vote and then taste it after you've tried the food and vote. Amazing how the pairing changes the second vote. It's a great way to enjoy fabulous dishes and learn about the wine. I've attended 4 of them so far and all have been great. Rick's wine knowledge, (his bad jokes aside) and the ambience of the restaurant create a party like atmosphere among those attending. Last time I brought along 3 guests and all were impressed by the food and the event. One of the best and fun events in Sacramento. Highly recommend it. The other cool thing they are doing are art receptions featuring local artists. The next one is an undiscovered artist from Russia who was actually working in their restaurant kitchen. When they saw his art that he was just doing for himself they convinced him to have a showing and you'll be blown away. I've already got one reserved. It's on June 14th at 5-8 PM. You will be able to meet this shy and humble artist , Aleksei Vystotski. They gave him the night off. LOL. Last is they are adding an Expresso bar featuring Temple coffee. The bar area is beautiful and with me being a sports fan it features two 85" flat screens. This bar area is separate from the dining area but you can still get full menu service. read more

Joseph, our server was very kind, intelligent and quite knowledgeable about the food on the menu. We started with Brie Cheese: with fig jam, raisins, spiced honey, and cherry mostarda. Mantu: steamed dumplings filled with seasoned beef and onions, topped with split peas and flavored yogurt, garlic and micro greens. ***this is a particularly delicious dish. We were told that it is a street food in their country much like pizza is here...it's like a comfort food. I ordered Braised Lamb Shank: braised in tomato, vegetable and red wine, served with pan fried polenta and roasted carrot and a sprig of rosemary. And Buttered asparagus Best Beloved ordered: Chicken Kabob: Chicken thigh skewers topped with lemon cream, served with roasted potatoes, arugula, red onion, Kalamata olives salad, tossed in red wine vinegar and olive oil and sprinkled with feta cheese. He also ordered Carrot & Ginger soup. I ordered iced tea. Best Beloved ordered Strawberry Mint Soda. This meal was epic. Each dish was well thought out. Delicious and paired well with the other dishes we chose. The restaurant itself self was pretty quiet when we got there, but when it started filling up, the noise level picked up a bit. All are outstandingly tasty. Love the Afghan dishes. The decor is nice and fits in well with this neighborhood. Owners are friendly and engaging with all of the customers. Food: as a part of sac vegan challenge month, we tried the Ashak, Kadoo Buloni, Frisse + Arugula, and Mushroom Risotto. Ashak: I was a little disappointed by how little stuffing there was in these dumplings. There also wasn't much flavor. The yogurt wasn't tart either. I would not get this again. Kadoo Buloni: I really enjoyed the buloni. Each slice had a generous amount of butternut squash filling; it was the star of the show. Mushroom Risotto: I enjoyed this dish, but my friend did not like how heavy the taste of coconut was. The consistency was good and was not too dry. Would definitely get this again! Frisse + Arugula: this was a very standard salad for me, our meal was a bit carbohydrate heavy so we wanted to incorporate some veggies - this was one of the few options on the menu. We ordered chicken and waffle, biscuits and pork sausage gravy w/poached eggs, and the chicken Milanese sandwich. While we enjoyed our meals, we were a bit disappointed there weren't any Afghani type items available (brunch). We chatted with the very nice co-owner and told her we'd be back to sample the Afghani menu for dinner soon. Fast forward a week later, and my daughter and I went in for an early dinner. We agreed to try most all of the Afghani apps offered. Needless to say we were both disappointed with our food due to oiliness, lack of flavor and/or seasoning, and food temperature. We added a Cesar salad w/anchovies hoping the anchovies or parm would provide the missing salt, but alas, even they were very mild and lacked the much needed punch of umami. We love the aromatics used in Afghan cooking, but somehow the seasonings fell through. Service and ambiance was fair on both visits. They also have a huge bar with additional dining area in the back for larger groups and perhaps Happy Hour. I was seriously Jonesing for some tasty food for dinner, but felt it was just meh.
