Good food and service. Nothing stood out for us. There are better places in Exeter.

We make it a point to get our Chinese food from Szechuan Taste every time we visit my mother in law in Exeter (we're from CT). To say their food is delicious is quite an understatement...there is no comparison. In fact, we're so spoiled by the time we get home, we refuse to have Chinese for a month or so...yes, it's That Good! We recommend everything we've tried: The chicken wings are unique (and a must order for us), General Tso's Chicken, Egg Rolls, Spare Ribs, Chicken and Broccoli are some of our favorites. Have bought the luncheon specials many times and love the quality. However, this time the main item portion (Moo Goo Gai Pan} was so small it could barely be called a portion, very small, few vegetables and disappointing. Plenty of rice and it seemed day old, same as with the chicken wings. (It was 11:30 when they'd just opened) but that wasn't the reason for purchasing the luncheon. Very good food. Not a real fancy place, but the service is great. We sat down and had water and hot tea at our table immediately w/o asking for it. They're very attentive and will modify any dish if you want to make it spicey, or make other changes. Will go back again for sure! read more

They almost always have hot, delicious food, but sometimes it's sub-par, and I'm not sure why. The crab rangoons were just fluffed sour cream recently, and had no flavor at all. Whereas you sometimes get a generous portion, other times, not so much. I think they have an off chef in the kitchen, but can't say for sure. Most of the time it's great. read more

For what it is (a Chinese restaurant in the middle of nowhere in NH) this is as good as it gets. Insanely popular with students at Phillips Exeter, Szechuan Taste is THE place to eat in Exeter. In my opinion Exeter is a pretty horrendous place to go out to eat but Szechuan keeps a high standard regardless of the other offerings. The owner is 110% crazy and wants your patronage like nobody's business, a good thing in my opinion. You also get the feeling like you could be in a Chinese restaurant in Boston, they've really done a nice job keeping the standard high. The food is reasonably priced, very tasty and coming here with a big group of people is a great time. You can expect the standard Chinese restaurant fare. The location is also great right in the middle of town, the staff speaks English with an extremely thick Chinese accent which adds to the experience and you're pretty much guaranteed to have a good time. You're always slightly mystified that Chinese food can be good in a small town in NH, but this is the place to go in Exeter. read more

This is my all time favorite Chinese restaurant! I have been coming here for years to eat in and carry out and I am always so happy with my meal! I love the cold sesame noodles they have here, (not many places carry them) which are so delicious! Definitely recommend Szechuan Taste! read more

If you're looking for a place in Exeter to order chinese food this is the WORST option. The general tsos and sesame chicken are gummy and hard to eat. The meat inside of the dumplings is full of gristle and fat making them literally inedible. For the price the food is terrible and you'd be better off going to Penang for cheaper and better quality food. I cannot emphasize enough how awful the food is and the service isn't great either. read more

Ok here it is. My friend suggested we go to Szechuan Taste as she is from the area and has been there plenty of times for take out. We arrived around 8 and there were a few other tables but not very busy. We sat down and ordered Scorpion bowls and the basic food like General Tso chicken, lo mein, beef sticks, rice, goons and maybe a few other items. The food wasn't bad. It wasn't great but it was ok for a hole in the wall place I guess. The service was quick and the food was hot. Then it starts getting good... We were just about wrapping up our meal and we were the last table there for the night. All the workers were sitting and eating their dinner at another table. There was no music playing and it was dead silent for a moment. All of a sudden we hear a small animal scurrying across the drop ceiling from one end of the restaurant to the other and stop directly above our table. I mean you wouldn't believe how loud it was. Had to be a large rat. I looked at the people that worked there and they were looking up and we were looking up and then we looked at each other and I just remember we both dropped our utensils and said I've had enough. Despite how disturbingly loud and gross it was we just started hysterically laughing probably as a result of drinking several scorpion bowls. The waiter went on like nothing even happened. They didn't offer us a discount for the disturbance or even an apology. It's unfortunate because the food was ok but I don't think I'll be able to bring myself back there ever again. read more

The restaurant is located in downtown Exeter. It's a typical Chinese American restaurant catering to the needs of the locals so Don't expect 'authentic' Chinese food here (or much elsewhere in NH). Be careful for the low entrance way that goes downward esp. the first step inwards. Come here for lunch only as the price is very reasonable and affordable. It's your typical Chinese food combos and the portion sizes are terrific and comes with soup for eat in only. The staff is friendly and appears to be a family-run business like most Chinese restaurants. The place looks dated as in old but it's roomy and clean. The men's room is relatively clean. The parking lot outside is shared with the town for public parking so first come first serve in parking as you'll be lucky to find room sometimes, which is difficulty to do in Exeter! I like the luncheon dishes but the regular dishes are pricey according to the menu though I haven't tried eating the regular dishes outside of lunch. It has a good take-out service as there's decent take-out orders at times on the counter. It's good for what it is. read more

A great place to sit and experience a Chinese meal without it being from a take out counter or in the hustle and bustle of a mediocre buffet. Came for lunch. For the same price as a food court meal ($7.95)we sat in a nice clean booth, were brought a hot pot of tea, fresh chow mein "chips" and pineapple dipping sauce, great hot and sour soup, a shrimp and vegetable entree with six big fresh shrimp and crisp vegetables, pork fried rice and an egg roll. Fantastic service and quiet, pleasant atmosphere. Definitely coming back! read more

I don't eat Chinese often but this is the only place I'll go to on the seacoast. The food is good and the staff are very friendly. The owner always stops by to see how we like everything. The chicken wings are really good here and they are very child friendly. read more

I have been going here for years since I was a kid. It is quite honestly the best Chinese restaurant I have ever been to in my life. The wait staff is quick and hospitable. There is complimentary water and Chinese chips ready at every table to tide you over for your meal. There is a great variety of food on the menu, all at reasonable prices and very good. The ingredients are always fresh, and the food will always keep you leaving full. The manager is friendly, and the staff is dedicated to being the best restaurant it can be. read more

I go to Szechuan Taste quite often - for both "take out" and in house dining. The Taste has a wonderful atmosphere with very friendly personnel. The best aspect of the Taste is the menu and the food. I often get scallop and shrimp dinners with mixed vegetables. The food is prepared very quickly and is always great ! The "take out" food is just as well prepared. I also love the beef teriyaki and the egg drop soup. This is a downtown restaurant with very ample free parking. I give it an "A" rating for "ausgezeichnet" (excellent). read more

not picky at all but this was by far the worst egg drop soup I've ever had. Literally no flavor. added mustard and wonton noodle sauce to try and give it flavor it desperately needed. Still couldn't do it and stopped eating after the 3rd or 4th bite. Entre was sesame chicken which was mostly breading and the quality of the meat was inferior to most chinese restaurants Ive had before, I feel like it was too chewy and soft with no meat stringyness whatsoever (makes you wonder what its made of or how it could be more processed than mcnuggets). Wife liked the eggrolls but I have a shrimp sensitivity and it wasn't listed on the menu as shrimp eggrolls. Overall poor experience, especially for $23 for those 3 things. The only thing I can honestly say wasn't amiss was the white rice. read more

Walked in a little after lunch time and ordered crab rangoon and chicken fingers for take-out. The crab rangoon should be renamed "cream cheese rangoon". There was no taste of crab, they were cooked well and crispy but missing the crab flavor. The chicken fingers were a huge disappointment. They were under cooked and soggy with frying oil. There were very small pieces of chicken in them and were mostly batter. I got the impression they were skimping on the proteins to keep cost down. read more

We used to like this place but a recent large takeout order was so awful that we won't go here again. We ordered several appetizers and main dishes for a family get-together and no one liked any of them! A big disappointment. They need to focus on quality and maybe we'll try again. read more

In my mind, the most authentic Cantonese cuisine in the Exeter area. The hot & sour soup and fried dumplings are just as you'd find in Boston Chinatown. The vegetables are above-average in freshness and taste. read more

Love the food here. We get takeout here all the time and it is our favorite Chinese food restaurant around! The other Chinese food place in Exeter has terrible food. Don't even both trying it. The only thing I could possibly say that is negative is interior needs an update. read more
