I'm giving Szechuan Taste two stars because I've been maybe a dozen times over the last 5years and never expected 5stars, if you do, you have no business rating restaurants! Each experience was clear cut, run of the mill Americanized Chinese food. Nothing cooked to order, all just reheated,etc. However, my last time there the pupu platter for two was almost uneatable. It so clearly had been reheated so many times that there was NO moisture left in any of it. I would guess the only reason we didn't get very sick was the preservatives and extreme reheating that killed everything. The service is prompt and friendly. However, the decor very much mimics its sub-level location. It's a basement Chinese restaurant right near an over indulgent, entitlement festering school. Growing up in NH this was the place we came for chinese. As previously mentioned, the owners are adorable and incredibly gratious. They still ask my parents about me whenever they go in. That aside -- the food is also great. The delight's of three soup is a staple, it has shrimp, chicken and pork in a chicken broth with lo mein noodles, carrots and peas. They clearly put the effort into every dish. If you're not a New Hampshire-ite there's some family relation between the owners here and the owners of Shanghai Village in Arlington, MA...which is also great food and great staff. read more

I had a chance to give this place a try for dinner during a recent visit to Exeter. Since I am a huge fan of Sichuan cuisine I had to try their food. I went with a group of guys so we ordered a few appetizers. The pupu platter was huge and came with five or six different items from chopped chinese bbq pork to bacon wrapped scallops. I was really disappointed from not being able to find any sichuan dishes on their menu. It was all pretty much cantonese food and not a single spicy sichuan item at all. Their food was just so-so chinese food you can get at any mall chinese food stall and nothing special about it. I don't even think these guys know what a flower pepper is and they call their restaurant Szechuan Taste. I will pass by this place when I am in Exeter again. read more

Good Chinese food........ for New Hampshire. If it was anywhere else, I'd probably recommend avoiding it. But the waitstaff were nice enough, and the food definitely wasn't the worst I've had, so I'd call it just about medium. The lunch buffet looked pretty darn sad-- mostly just fried things and noodles soaked in oil. Husband and I opted to order off the regular menu-- veggie fried rice and mixed veggies with tofu in brown sauce. Rice needed some major soy sauce dousing, veggies were surprisingly good. Tofu was not. All in all, it met my (rather low) expectations, and I might even go back if I was in the mood for low-quality Chinese (these cravings do happen, believe me). It would be nice if they had some lighter options, but NH Chinese food seems to be synonymous with heavy oil, MSG, and refined sugar. The restaurant itself is nothing to look at. Unless you want to look at drop ceilings with ghetto crown molding and ragged carpet. I assume it's more of a take-out place. Which is fine, just sayin' read more

Hot and sour soup was the best I had in quite a while. Staff were great, attentive but not overbearing. Mai Tai had too much pineapple for my taste but it was still very drinkable. So... when I was younger, the food here was delicious, and the service was usually great. Sadly, ever since I learned that a new owner took over, the food here is now... bland. The General Tso's Chicken was bland. The pork lo mein was terrible. Not to mention they got my house's order wrong. This place used to be very busy, even on Sunday nights. Now... there was only one person there when one of my roommates picked-up our order tonight. In fairness, to those who have complained about the low entrance, well... that has always been the case, even with the previous owner. Also, the person my roommate spoke to on the phone helped corrected our order, and had our order delivered for free. The beef lo mein and crab rangoons we then got from the free delivery were good. I truly hope someone from this business pays attention to this post, because I would love for it to improve. Sadly, I do not see that happening. In the future, I will be taking my business elsewhere. I thought the Garlic Shrimp was phenomenal (I asked for extra chili sauce because I like food spicy). I used to go to another Chinese restaurant nearer to my house but during this pandemic, I got tired of their rather cavalier attitude about mask wearing. Plus the food here is much better. Szechuan Taste - Chinese Near Me - Exeter, New Hampshire

PuPu platter was bad. Everything was overcooked and dried out. The chicken teriyaki was so dry the chicken was stringy. Chicken wings were dark brown, burnt, and dry. The bacon on the rumaki was burnt to a crisp. The only decent things were the spare ribs, beef teriyaki, and chicken fingers and they weren't even that good. Overall, a bad experience. read more

Stopped in while passing through the area and needed to satisfy hubby's Chinese Food craving. Food was very good, just wish they would include combinations at Dinner time, and not make one order a side of pork fried rice (for like $6). I personally don't like "PFR" (would prefer brown or white) but had to share with hubby as the portion was very large. We had to order appetizer plates, which had the perfect amount of food. Good, cheap and friendly! Americanized Chinese food, but yummy! Lunch specials are great and run through Saturdays. Buffet option on Sunday. These guys deliver too. We usually opt for cashew chicken (no celery!) and moo goo gai pan. Love the hot and sour soup. If you eat in, you always get hot tea, ice water and fried chip things with sour sauce. We add mustard. We always leave satisfied and come back for more. We have traveled in SE Asia and in China. This is not that kind of cuisine. The experience begins from the Parking Lot. You can smell the dilisheousness before you even walk in. The food is the classic Chinese flavor you expect when you go to a Chinese Restaurant. I have been a patron here for years but I have noticed that the quality has gone down a bit in recent years, cold soup, not great takeout. This is a very little place but has some fun distinctive traits. You get a decent hot and sour soup with every reasonably-priced lunch special. Food is fresh. Owner is delightful. Last time I went with my fam for an occasion, the cook carved a beautiful bird from a radish. Makes me smile just to think of it. Directly across from the Ioka Theater. Once when I went there for lunch with a girlfriend, the waiter gave me part of my tip back and told me it was too much. Szechuan Taste has what is probably the best Sunday Chinese lunch buffet in southeastern NH. It isn't the largest, nor is it the most creative, but it is the highest quality food you'll find. Prepared in small batches with quality ingredients and skill, the food is wonderful. The service here is excellent--my only complaint there is that they routinely give me white rice when I order brown rice. I am a vegan, so I am most familiar with their vegetable dishes, which are pretty good. Some are extremely oily but also very flavorful. Extremely disappointed. New Year's Eve afternoon take-out 12/31/15. Our family ordered $100 worth of food today. It was terrible! Both General tso's Chicken & Sesame Chicken had very pink -Raw Chicken. I could understand the mistake - a busy day I'm sure. I called to inform them, so they would not make the same mistake for other customers. I would want to know, if it was me. I was only told 'sorry about that' with a 'no-care' attitude. No "thank you for letting us know- so we can fix it". I don't think the girl I spoke to had any intention on telling anyone in the kitchen to fix it. I hope no one gets sick! The rest of our food was pre-made and absolutely terrible. I understand this is one of their busier days, however, no excuse for it to be disgusting. Our vegetable lomein was just noodles with one mushroom and a couple green pieces. We didn't receive any broccoli or white rice in either chicken dish, nor fortune cookies, no extras. I couldn't even eat the house rice. It was just gross. Most of the food was instantly tossed in trash. We have gone to Szechuan Taste our entire lives. They have gone WAY downhill in my opinion. We have continued to order from them, hoping they would improve, however, today was the absolute last straw. No more business from us. Anyone know of a better Chinese restaurant nearby Exeter? I'm sad, because I really used to enjoy their food. BTW, is it true they don't use any MSG in their restaurant? That's what they told me. read more

They almost always have hot, delicious food, but sometimes it's sub-par, and I'm not sure why. The crab rangoons were just fluffed sour cream recently, and had no flavor at all. Whereas you sometimes get a generous portion, other times, not so much. I think they have an off chef in the kitchen, but can't say for sure. Most of the time it's great. read more

Very good food. Not a real fancy place, but the service is great. We sat down and had water and hot tea at our table immediately w/o asking for it. They're very attentive and will modify any dish if you want to make it spicey, or make other changes. Will go back again for sure! read more

Now that East Asia has closed this consolation Chinese restaurant is the best you will find in the area. The menu is fairly large and they do have some things that are harder to find in this area. Also they use REAL chinese BBQ sauce not the american version, and it is better than any other in the area read more
