My favorite restaurant in Exeter! New owner stepped in and flavors have been superb: my favorites are Crazy Noodles with beef, chicken or shrimp (not so much with the fried tofu). Their fresh veggies rolls are also perfect. Wonton soup, crab Rangoon, mango sticky rice...too many great choices! Food seems to be better each time! Location is a bit far walk from downtown but totally worth the extra walk!!! Inside is very basic decor...nothing fancy to show off. But awesome authentic Asian food!!! read more

I ordered takeout drunken noodles and at a spice level of 2 (out of 4) and it was still very spicy! The veggies were nice and crisp and everything was seasoned well. I also ordered veggie spring rolls - the only thing I didn't like was the sauce that came with spring rolls because it was very watery And the spring rolls were just Ok. Khaophums II opened in the former Tom Yum Thai Cuisine building, located at the corner of Portsmouth Ave and Water St. During the pandemic, this casual Thai restaurant was only open for takeout even though they have a cozy full service dining room (temporarily closed). I stopped in here recently for lunch takeout and ordered the Lunch Shrimp Green Curry ($11 plus tax), which was packed and ready to go with plastic utensils provided. I specified mild spicy to them during my order, which they obliged. The lunch sized Shrimp Green Curry dish had a mix of tender shrimp, bamboo shoots, fresh vegetables (broccoli, zucchini, red pepper, green beans) in a mild spicy coconut milk sauce, soft white rice in the same container. This dish was well prepared and delish! I can't wait stop here again for lunch and order some drunken noodles! read more

Behind a parking lot at the junction of High Street (Rte. 27) and Portsmouth Avenue, Khaophums II is nothing to look at and easy to miss but since moving to Exeter a couple of years ago, we have made this unpretentious but savory eatery an intermittent habit. It has the most reliably authentic Thai food in the area. Once in a while, we've asked for something familiar from our time in Thailand that wasn't on the menu; we have never been disappointed by the results. Khaophums II does a brisk business in takeout but we enjoy having lunch there not just because the food is tasty but also because, despite the small size of the dining area, it is quiet enough to enable an unimpeded private conversation. Delicious flavors and a lovely server who said she was also the cook. I got crazy noodles and asked for mild spice. It was so painfully spicy I could barely eat it. My partner got basil fish and it was nicely fried with a light batter. It also had some heat. The fresh garden rolls were good. Tasty dipping sauces. The pad Thai was good too. There is not much to say about Khaophum II that has not already been said. This is without a doubt, my favorite Thai restaurant within 500 miles. They are still only open for takeout. However, I normally get enough to last for three meals during the week. I know it may seem non-adventurous, but I just cannot get past the chicken spring rolls and the pork dumplings. They are both exceptional quality and the perfect start to any meal. Make sure you ask for all of the associated condiments as they add tremendously to not just the appetizers, but the entire meal. I always order one pork, one chicken, and one beef dish when I go to Khaophum II. I will typically mix them up between the crazy noodles, fried rice, and some other option. My favorite of all is the Thai basil with pork. For some reason, that combination just works. The pork is a bit different from most places, as you get very substantial pieces of meat such that the pork is not an afterthought but actually the star. I really hesitate to recommend one thing over another though, as everything I have had from this restaurant is just superb. I would say, the level of spice at this place is quite a bit higher than your average American Thai restaurant. I would recommend ordering medium spicy before moving on to the hot. You cannot go wrong with this place. read more

We ordered takeout today. The food was ready as promised. We ordered their larb salad which was fine, chicken satay which was tasteless if without the peanut sauce - not impressed and wouldn't order again, pad Thai which I love but very disappointing taste to it(bad oil?), and red chicken curry but they gave us green curry instead. Happy to say the vegetables were cooked just right. We were glad we ordered all dishes to be hot not mild, otherwise we wouldn't have enjoyed it. Will I go eat there again? Maybe... if I had no choice although my husband says it's better than any Thai places around this area. read more

You can imagine my initial apprehension of trying yet another incarnation of the Thai place on the corner. After a long line of mediocre "under new ownerships" I didn't have high hopes. Based on the limited, yet glowing, reviews on Yelp, I decided to give it a try. In short, the food is amazing. By far the best takeout option in the Exeter/Stratham area. We've been back 4 times already! The chicken spring rolls are crispy, delicious and by far the best I've had in the seacoast. The Massaman Curry with just a hint of spice and also very good. The Khaophums Duck is also good but doesn't come with a sauce (which was unexpected), just crispy duck and sautéed vegetables. Pad Thai and other selections are just as good. Nothing is greasy or over sauced. We try new dishes each time we order and there haven't been any disappointments yet. One additional standout worth mentioning is the Crab Rangoons. In the past, I don't think I have ever had one that's palatable so when Khaophums threw a half a dozen into one of our orders I didn't have high hopes. Surprise! A Crab Rangoon you'd actually want to eat. They are by far the best crab Rangoons I've ever eaten by a long shot. Some interesting menu anomalies that are helpful to know when you order. First, the only menu you can find online is actually for the Dover location. The menu is nearly, but not exactly, the same. There are some items that are not available (yet?) at the Exeter location, such as the Pad Woon Sen. I would recommend picking up an actual menu from them if you want a completely accurate version. Also, number of items in an order is unexpected. An order of spring rolls will get you 5 rolls. However, order Satay, and you'll only get three. So plan ahead and get two orders :) All in all, keep up the good cuisine Khaophums II! read more

My pad thai with tofu was pretty good and the crab ragoons were some of the best we've ever eaten. However the crazy noodle dish, listed as medium spicy, was so hot that it was inedible. I know Thai food is spicy but the website didn't make it clear just how spicy it was. I'd definitely try it again but only gave it 2 stars since one of the dishes was so spicy. read more

We have only done takeout, and it has been excellent every time. Everyone agrees that the crab Rangoon are very tasty, even if there is no recognizable crab in them. We have tried several different dishes, but I always use pad Thai as the baseline for a Thai restaurant, and everything has been very tasty and hot. Went on a Wednesday night. Noticed the take out business was bustling! We ordered the Fresh Rolls, one of the only non-fried appetizers and they were fantastic!!! Fresh, big basil flavor, not a lot of rice vermicelli, nicely cooked shrimp, raw lettuce and shredded carrots wrapped perfectly in rice paper served with a delicious sweet heat sauce. My entree was chicken and cashew nuts with lots of crisp tender vegetables. Light sauce. Served with rice on the side. I put a little of the sweet heat on it (it's a table condiment) and that took it over the top. My husband got the Seafood Firehouse under the Chef Specials, which was a little hot for him, but plenty of seafood! Also served with rice. Yummy! Our hostess/server had her timing down with drinks, taking our order and checking in. She's great! We are going back to try different dishes and soups. Will definitely do take out too. Food is good but service sucks. I called tonight at 6:09 pm and they said my chicken pad thai would take 20 minutes. I'm leaving now and it's 7:09 pm. A whole hour later. To top it off they gave me tofu pad thai and when i went in they blamed it on my husband confirming to them that it was tofu when they broight it out. Then they stated they gave my chicken pad thai to the previous customer and next time I should be the one to go in and pick up. I understand busy nights so just give me a real time frame. First, take this review with a grain of salt (or Grain of Paradise if you prefer.) Based on one visit, three items, and the new operators had been open fewer than 10 days, so I can't offer a fair appraisal of the whole establishment, of course, but here are a few impressions. Bottomline first. I wouldn't be afraid to try a takeout item or three. Place looked very clean. Food was hot and ready to go right on time. The dishes we had were good. So let's just say, "Low hurdle crossed." The owners have been in business in Dover for years and are regularly lauded as "the best Thai I've ever tasted" by many Yelpers. But, best Thai chow ever? With all respect to fellow reviewers ... Ah, no. Good and not objectionable in any way. Sure. This is decent formulaic Americanized Thai food (which is fine with me. No offal, deep-fried frog or red ant eggs -- suits my NH upbringing.) Essentially, Khaophums is squarely in the middle of that broad genre of domestic pan-Asian food borrowing heavily from original Cantonese Chinese cuisine loosely re-created and evolved here in response to mass taste buds and thin wallets. (You already knew that!) After all, Western diners have made crab rangoon (most likely born NYC during the 1950s) a measuring stick of greatness. Add to those ubiquitous rangoons the mini-burrito-style "egg" rolls with no egg, the omnipresent pad thai variations, and all manner of gooey deep fried protein served sweet and sour or just plain sweet. Witness the common chef's "specialities" that appear dressed in General Tso's uniform and you see that our American melting pot applies literally to the untold number of so-called Asian eateries that span the landscape from the northernmost reaches of Maine (tangschinesecuisine.com) to the southernmost tip of the Baja peninsula. (chinscabo.com) Those restaurants report that General Tso's chicken is far and away the #1 GrunHub order. The General's bird is, in fact, among the top five revenue producers in all of GrubHub's world. Anyway, enough blather. On to take-out from Khaophums II. Soup first. The Tom Yum was average/good. Not real spicy hot but kicky enough. The umami level was adequate from a fish paste or similar funky ingredient. I'd like a bigger hit of lemongrass, but no big deal. Thankfully, not overly salty but not a lot of sour either. Maybe a little heavier foot on the kaffir leaf? I do like the chopped fresh-off-the-supermarket-shelf tomato in there, though. In totality this Thai classic didn't exactly make the taste buds tremble with complexity or depth, but pretty good nonetheless. Long-time dining companion went with an American Thai pop standard -- massaman curry. This version was worthy if you want mild-ish and sweet-ish. Another "good" rating, the many curry flavors balanced and pleasing. Although pronounced too spicy for the delicate French palate of my takeout date of 30 years, I found it pretty tame by Thai standards. (If you want absolutely no heat, as she prefers, I guess you better ask. Or if you want more than just mild heat, better ask for that too.) Now, the most curious part of this first encounter with Khaophums. I ordered Pad C-U after asking just what the "C-U" means. Guy on the phone said he didn't know. The menu description says stir fried flat rice noodle, with Chinese broccoli, broccoli, carrots, egg, and thick soy sauce. I chose fried tofu for the protein. I'm still trying to figure out, after forensic analysis of my entree, just what order I received. Comprising my dish along with tofu cubes were what certainly must have been egg noodles (not rice,) along with spring pea pods (not listed,) broccoli, carrots, and a ground ingredient that might have been peanuts or perhaps finely ground pork in minute amount (another mystery guest ingredient.) Egg? Chinese broccoli? Thick soy sauce? I don't have a spectrometer but I'm pretty sure those ingredients were absent. So I figured I must have been given another menu item by mistake. But I can't find anything that lines up with the ingredients I was served. So maybe it was an unlisted "Jazz Noodles" improvised by the cook (?) Or maybe the "C-U" stands for C if U can figure it out. The dish tasted OK, mind you. No heat at all so I added chili oil at home. But here is why I'm truly thankful when it comes to this particular wayward dish. It contained none of the dreaded baby corn. Hate those tasteless little canned things. Let them grow up to adulthood, shuck 'em and eat 'em out of hand or in a chowder, for Brahma's sake. I'm totally against corn infanticide. read more

We went in to sit and eat and the 2 servers were more than helpful and excited to see us eating in. We ordered and the food came out quick and was delicious. I am from California, where there are lots of Thai restaurants, and this is one of the best Thai meals I can remember. In March of 2021, we ordered a green curry with tofu and a red curry with shrimp, along with the Veggie Delight plate. In all three dishes, the vegetables were done to perfection, soft to the teeth but not overdone. The curries were distinct and balanced between sweetness and spice. The shrimp were fresh and cooked perfectly. The eggplant was soft but not mushy and it was well-done (so often eggplant is undercooked these days). The service was fast and courteous, and although we couldn't eat in due to Covid, the food was still perfectly hot when we got home. Was pleasantly surprised by the delicious take out dinner we ordered. The order of chicken panang curry, sticky rice, shumai, and fresh rolls was called in for pick up at 5:30. It was ready for us at that time but, without the shumai. The restaurant had tried calling me to let me know they had run out of this but I had left my phone at home. They quickly made another app, scallion pancakes that were cooked in record time. All the food was delicious! The curry was enough for my husband and I to split, still with left overs.
