And while the food and coffee are fine (though all pretty nondescript) and the woman behind the counter is very friendly, it feels like they're not taking it seriously. She'll sit there chatting with a neighbor, then get confused what she was doing or start something else. The server was very friendly and service was reasonably quick (about 20 mins. for our sandwiches and drinks to come out). Sweet Scene is a small, cozy cafe tucked away on a residential street in Astoria, less than 10 min walk from either Steinway or Broadway stops. There are a few tables and bar if you want to enjoy your food there, plus a few chairs outside for warmer months. Nothing fancy, just my type of place. :) I love the iced coffee and drop here - smooth but strong enough. I get my coffee black or with a touch of non-dairy milk, but they have a bunch of drinks, including some European specialities like the popular Greek freddo espresso / latte. I also loooove the pastries and baked goods, which I believe are freshly baked in-house. Every time I go, there's at least two vegan options. The vegan cornette (similar to a croissant) is a must!!! It's flaky, soft, and slightly buttery tasting. One of the things I miss from being vegetarian before are croissants, so I'm so happy to have found an actually good vegan version.
