So I've had fond memories of eating here with my mother. It had a nice atmosphere and the food was great. Last week I got takeout and there General sows chicken was different. I asked for duck sauce and they charged me a dollar extra and didn't put it in the bag. Then today I pulled up the open sign was off and it looked like it was closed. I called they were open... I dined in and again I asked for duck sauce and what was brought to me looks like sweet-and-sour sauce. They sat me in the back bar because the rest of the restaurant looked like it was turned into a to go assembly line. The table was sticky and damp it was freezing cold in the bar they had rap music playing in an Asian restaurant and took the bartender/waiter forever to take my order. A great spot to come in a group or by yourself. There is a large and rotating bunch of regulars, but not so many you'll be turned off your first time in. Happy hour deals are fantastic. I will never spend a single penny at this restaurant. The moment my wife and I entered, the waitress gave us a dirty look. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, so I said in a very friendly way, "How are you today?" The waitress turned around and walked away. Even the cashier seemed uncomfortable. I ordered Sweet Basil for my department primarily because they deliver and the reviews were good. I ordered sushi, yellow tail rolls and spicy tuna. My colleagues went with traditional Chinese dishes. As everyone dug into their food, I opened my sushi and was immediately hit with a fishy smell. The yellow tail was actually gray in color! Clearly the fish was bad. I called to let them know and they told me yellow tail is supposed to smell fishy! I eat sushi at least once a week and no it should not smell. They would refund me but they had to come pick up the sushi. When the delivery girl arrived, I asked her look and smell the sushi. She said no this is bad, I'm sorry. At least I knew better not to eat it but someone new to sushi could've gotten pretty sick if they ate it. Colleagues thought the General Tso was fine. Won;t go here again. :( read more

The place has great, fresh Chinese food! Such a rare find in CT. Their sushi also looked good but haven't tried it yet. I would definitely eat here again - crab Rangoon was fantastic and the sesame tofu is another one I could never concoct at home. Note to business: clean the windows and redo the menus - it looks like the windows haven't been cleaned in a decade and the menus have a diner-esque aging feel/look to them. After incessant nagging and raving about this place from my besties, I decided to make my way from Westport to try something new. They were so right to make me truck up to Fairfield. Parking is awkward in front, so take some turns and make your way to rear. The entrance is a bit tight with waiters and hosts squeezing by each other, but service was quick and friendly. The $10 sashimi lunch box is my jam. It comes with salad (yummy miso dressing), miso soup, a full California roll, tasty shumai, a side of rice AND 8 pieces of sashimi. Do you have any idea how much food that is? Definitely more than $10 worth, that's for sure. I've had bites of others' selections -- I only remember the sesame chicken and pad thai right now -- which were fine but nothing special. Happy is daily from 3-6 pm drinks are buy one get one free. The are not cheap with the drinks so you get a great kick off of just one. The service is fantastic and the food is delicious. Okay. So I usually have complaints about service, considering that I work in it... but the dining experience I just had really takes the cake. Maybe it was just the waitress that we had tonight, since I've been here a couple times before and had no real problems. The food was fine, but remember though: It's not just the food or the look in a restaurant, it's also the experience, which service falls into that category. So here's what happened: After we sat down, it was only a couple of minutes that we waited to order drinks. No problems there. There was another waitress that came over asking us if we wanted anything to drink, but we told her that somebody else did. We didn't think the second waitress would be the one taking our order. She repeats back the order to us, which is good. I added something in that I had mentioned before. Fine. It happens. Note, we also mentioned to bring everything out at the same time. There was a family that comes in next to us, and they order their food. So, the appetizers come out, but one of them is wrong. Ordered a veggie vietnamese roll, and it came out with shrimp. What if a guest was allergic?? And I was the only one that did not get my soup, when we specifically asked to have it out all at the same time. The corrected order took a long time. The roll was alright, but hard to eat since it falls apart easily, and the mango didn't go in my opinion. Here's the paragraph with the real kicker: Not only does the family next to us get their entrees before we did, but then my order was wrong!! One slip up is one thing, but two? Bad news. I wish I could say the outlandishly bad service was comical, but alas, falls short. The rolls I ordered (but got a sushi instead) was fine, but kind of tasteless. It was alright, but I've had better in the area. Separate from service: we also found that three plates that were served to us are chipped! eek! Needless to say, overall, we were not happy. I made a simple special order to my roll (for the rice to be on the outside) which was neglected, I asked fot hot water (assuming tea was a regular menu item) and recieved scolding hot water in a glass tumbler, not a mug and when my friend ordered a margaherita on the rocks out waiter asked if "she was sure she really wanted this". Even to my seasoned tongue, I could tell this was no more than a "medium" for most people. The rice wasn't that sticky, which surprised me. There was also a lot missing from the menu - no Japanese meat (teriyaki, tempura, etc.) for example. It seemed to try to pick a little from every Asian genre, and in doing so has failed to be something greater than the sum of its parts. I would recommend cutting the cuisines in half, doubling the selection from each, and studying up a bit harder on how to truly bring out the flavors that should be brought out. The entrance is very nice and the decor inside clean and sharp. The hostess was very friendly and bubbly and I was seated quickly. The waiter came up to the table right away and took the order. The drink menu was pretty interesting with various libations, I tried a martini that was blue and delicious! Their Mai tai also delicious and not overly powering with alcohol. For appetizer I tried a roll which the name is escaping my mind right now however it had a slice of jalapeño on top and BAM! Delicious! It was my favorite roll! For dinner I had the surf and turf which was amazing although the sauce was just a little too much and I felt my scallops swimming away in the sauce. But the food was so good I ate the whole thing. This is officially our new dinner spot when we're driving between NYC and NH. It's always hard to get food while you're traveling that's not too heavy, not too expensive, and not too time-consuming. Sweet Basil is right off the highway. The service isn't rushed, but it is definitely attentive. And the food... yes, please! The menu ranges from Japanese to Chinese to Thai and beyond. Usually a bad sign... but almost everything we ordered was great. Both the green salad and sashimi salad were great. Dressing on the green salad was a little strange (way too sweet, and kind of spicy), but for $4.50 you get what most Japanese restaurants would consider an entree-sized portion, with green pepper, real tomatoes (not under-ripe white-ish orange crunchy slices), cucumbers, and carrot. My "entree" (technically an appetizer) was the Crispy Avocado Shrimp. Just thinking about it is making me drool right now. It's 3 pieces of fresh, crispy tempura shrimp (not the soggy, defrosted crap most places use) atop delicious guacamole with a mango, mint, and honey mustard sauce on top. Seriously, though... think about it... delicious! Mike had the vegetable delight, which was kind of blah and too sweet. Not a reorder for sure, but there seems to be lots of great stuff on the menu so next time he'll just try something different. This is my fave asian food place. I'm a vegetarian and I must say that they have the freshest veggies around. The veggie sushi is done perfectly and I rave about and crave the vegetable spring rolls. They are loaded with the most amount of veggies that I've ever seen in a spring roll. To die for. Love them! I love everything I've had there and I've probably been there more than 60 times, no exaggeration. Their rice dishes are great, sushi, apps, etc. And the mango mai tai, is bomb.
