Legit espresso place! I ordered an almond milk Cortado and it delivered. What I liked the most outside of the traditional balance of being smooth creamy and bitter was the temperature. Swallow Cafe is extremely cute and I had a solid good vanilla latte from here today. I stopped by this morning on my way to work and instantly fell in love with the atmosphere of the place. It's very rustic and quaint and, honestly, quiet. There's a loft type area in the middle of the place and it's super cute - I wished I had something to study or do from the moment I walked in and saw it. I had a vanilla latte to-go and was pleasantly surprised by the taste. It was almost as if there was cinnamon in it as well and it was a really unique addition to the overall flavor. AND there was latte art on it even though it was to-go. Maybe it's just me, but I see it as a special place if they take time to do latte art on to-go lattes. I'm already stoked to go back here and spend an afternoon drinking coffee, "working" and appreciating life. read more

This place is absolutely adorable inside! The barista was very nice and my matcha latte came quick ! The only reason I didn't give five stars was because my one drink was 8$ and I couldn't taste any matcha only the oat milk which sometimes can be over bearing so maybe if you get with a different milk that won't be the case , but I would definitely come back again! read more

I have problems with this cafe. First let me start with their "no laptops" tables. The seating in this cafe isn't abundant and for people like me who come here to work, this "no laptops" thing is super annoying. I wouldn't be as annoyed if the majority of tables weren't sized for children. So many of tables are low to the ground and of the very few normal sized tables about half are "no laptop." I understand that they want more people to order food, but if I actually had a decent place to sit, I would maybe come here every day AND order lunch while I'm working. The food is not bad by the way. I've had worse. The staff isn't the friendliest. It's usually some underpaid millennial hipster acting like it's a favor to serve me a cappuccino. My advice: refresh a table strategy that makes sense for your regular clientele. Till that happens, I'm out. read more

A really nice coffee/breakfast shop on Atlantic. They offer a nice selection of coffee/cappuccino and similar type drinks along with a limited food menu of items like avocado toast, Huevos Rancheros, and Oatmeal. Once you order at the register, you have to pick up your drinks at the bar, but the food is delivered to the table you choose (be careful, some are quite wobbly). Wait time on the food can be a bit long, but it's worth the wait if you have the time. read more

I purchased a cider, sandwich and bought a book. The food and drink were sub-par, but if it weren't for the horrible service and rude staff I wouldn't have left a review. His comments were rude and his pompous service was more than I expected. I bused my plate to the trash by the door, he said there is a bin around the corner for that, but if youre leaving I'll take it this time. That place is not visible if you've sat in the front. During my trip to Swallow Cafe I ordered a dirty chai latte. It was only 8 ounces and it cost $7.62 which is absolutely ridiculous. Moreover, the latte was not even good. The spice blend they use is different than any other I've ever had and not in a good way. Almost $1 per ounce for bad coffee. When I entered the store, it was pouring rain outside. I got my drink before my friends and while they waited I sipped on my latte. I obviously take COVID-19 very seriously so when I wasn't drinking I kept my mask over my nose and mouth. However, mid sip, one of the employees asked that I put my mask on and leave the store and go back out into the rain. This was especially frustrating because there were numerous other patrons also sipping their drinks inside the store without being chided. I would have understood if it was store policy for no drinks to be consumed inside the store, but that was obviously not the case. I would have also appreciated an explanation but none was given, just a direction to leave the store because I had received my drink. It's safe to say that I will never be back to Swallow Cafe to purchase their overpriced and disappointing espresso. read more

My first time here after 3 years of walking past It and wanting to go in! My husband got the Prospect heights sandwich- lots of tomato and melted cheese on a baguette. I took a bite and it was delicious. Coffee is from counter culture- cappuccino was really good. They have a cute little upstairs seating area, good for studying. Our seats were dining only (no laptops) and that was right by the window. I'm happy those are reserved for diners only and not for campers. This was a great place with nice music and a good barista. It was very hard to put a review rating number on this as there was was only one thing I was unhappy about at the Swallows Cafe. The atmosphere was great,the food ordered ,wonderful but I still came out wanting to vomit. I have been writing reviews for Yelp for many years now and this is the first review I have ever had to write about downright abusive and disturbing treatment by an employee to a customer.And the customer was me. Last week was the first time visiting my friend Vivi in Brooklyn in over two years due to Covid. She had been telling me about the wonderful places to eat in her neighborhood brimming with Middle Eastern stores and was particularly enthusisastic about Swallows Cafe. I was happy it was only a block away as I am no longer a Spring Chickee and had torn miniscus muscle in my right knee a couple of months before. Vivi assured me it would be comfortable there. When my turn came to order for us, I told Charley,the order taker that it was my first time and he welcomed me. He told me my hot chocolate would be made by the beverage maker and that when it was done it would be waiting for me on the bar.I was given an order number on a holder and also told our food would be brought by a server to our table.So, I sat down with Vivi and wafted into the feeling one gets in the morning when things are all right in the world and you are catching up with an old friend. The place has a chic,happy atmosphere with nice music and lots of chatty neighborhood people as well as others reading the newspaper.It felt wonderful to be alive and well and happy on a sunny December morning in New York! After about 10 minutes i got up to see about my hot chocolate. It was on the bar but alas it had become quite cool. I asked the beverage maker if he could please pop it into the microwave to heat it up.He informed me that there WAS no microwave but that he would be happy to make me a new one if I wanted. I felt terrible about it,I apologised for his trouble,but what could I do,would YOU be happy to drink a cold hot chocolate? At this point Charley piped up and said they were calling out my name for 10 minutes and I never got up. My name?He never asked for my name!!.He insisted that they were yelling out HOT CHOCOLATE,HOT CHOCOLATE and that it it was my fault that I did not hear their yelling. That I needed to pay attention. When I protested that I didn' t hear anything,he told me I was rude.In a very loud voice. And I was humiliated in front of a lot of people. I briefly toyed with the idea of requesting to see the managerand making a scene but decided that the day would be spoiled. I had tears in my eyes when I returned to Vivi. I told her of how I was treated by Charley and she became very upset. A few minutes later I pointed out Charley to her .She took it upon herself to ask him to come over and tell him that her friend was very upset and would he please apologise. At that point Charley yelled out ,"No NEVER WOULD I APOLOGISE TO HER". I grew up with 5 very macho men in my family,Vivi was an only child.I could have told her the LAST thing Charley would be capable of doing would be an apology to an older lady, but then what do you expect from the likes of a Charley? Later on that day, I called the owner of the cafe and complained of Charley's attitude .I had been a waitress for many years as I young woman and never,ever, would I have ever treated a customer in an angry and abusive manner.The owner apologised profusely and told me he would talk to Charley.He offered me a free hot chocolate the next time I come in. Was this experience be worth a free hot chocolate to you? Vivi vowed never to go into the Swallows Cafe ever again. read more

I love the atmosphere of this place! A small winding staircase leads to an adorable loft. Great coffee and food. Only negative is that you're unable to use the top loft unless you're having "lunch" so coffee drinkers with their laptops aren't always permitted but regardless it's still a great cafe! read more

We sat down and were waiting for our coffee when a blonde woman on staff kicked us out of our seats in favor of two people downstairs who had just received their food. When we objected, she insisted we move--rudely, loudly, and in front of everyone in the coffee shop--so of course we left. I have degenerative disc disease, severe back pain, and neuropathy. I've never, ever been asked to leave a seat as a paid customer in over a decade of living in New York City. Do not come here. They will probably treat differently-abled patrons poorly. read more

Such an adorable cafe with great service! I am so glad I found this place. It is just off the beaten path of downtown Brooklyn and it is perfect for setting up shop and getting work done. The exposed brick wall and wood accents give the shop that warm industrial feel. There is also alot of natural light, which allows you to work comfortably and avoiding feeling stuffed inside. The jazzy/classical music is the perfect background for accomplishing work. It is just loud enough to drown out conversations, but not so loud you can't pick up a phone call or concentrate on work. The wifi works well. I have no issues with connectivity. I could see there being an issue finding a place to charge my laptop. If you plan to camp out for a while, really scope out your spot. I ordered a Macchiato, which was promptly prepared and laid out on a small wood slab. I absolutely loved that the barista gave me a little glass of water without asking me if I wanted it. They have a decent food selection with salads, sandwiches and pastries. They are a little expensive for me, but totally normal by any Brooklyn/NYC standard. They have this adorable little balcony area with a few seats and tables. There wasn't enough room to fit little me up there, but maybe next time (because there will definitely be a next time)! read more

Swallow certainly serves a need for decent coffee in the area near Atlantic and Court, and the coffee is good and the space is very pleasant. Unfortunately, they can't seem to sort out their kitchen. On three different occasions (I live nearby so kept giving them chances) I've waited about 20 minutes--I wish I was kidding--for a sandwich. This is even when Swallow is mostly empty. It's baffling but chronic. Maybe go in for coffee. Under no circumstances order food (which, by the way, is decent once you get it) if you don't want to be insulted by the wait time. read more

First and foremost, I love this cafe, I love the owner, I love the vibes, I have been coming here my whole life. This cafe is where I found out that Santa Clause wasn't real, its the place where I've went after school for my whole life, and It's always been a place where I can reminisce on positive memories. I hate leaving bad reviews but out of my 10 years of knowing this cafe, I unfortunately don't think I can ever go back. The service from our barista, a lady with big green glasses, was completely not okay. I ordered a matcha with oatmilk and my friend ordered a matcha and a croissant. Usually I don't tip on my card (as i am still in highschool and so i don't have infinite funds) and tip with my cash after I order, same for my friend, but immediately when I pressed no tip on the ipad she glared at me and the bad vibes began. My friend had to go to the bathroom and the lady wouldn't even direct her towards it when she asked (we watched her later eagerly direct every other customer who asked for the bathroom). I noticed that she was calling out all of the orders very loudly but skipped the two of ours. I've been ordering matchas her for forever and I saw the other matchas people had ordered and ours were basically milk compared to the other ones we saw that day. When my friend came back from the bathroom, she didn't know if her croissant had come out or not, but decided to ask because we saw people who had ordered after us get their pastries as they were served right from the counter. My friend goes up very politely and asks "hey sorry I was in the bathroom but I was wondering if my croissant came out yet", the lady responds saying "oh im sorry is my service not good enough for you?" my friend replies, "no not at all sorry i was just wondering" and the lady tosses the croissant into a bag and literally throws it across the counter. and when I say throw i mean throw. Confused, my friend goes "im sorry do we a problem?" and she mocks her back saying "oh im sorry do we have a problem?" in the rudest way possible. We sit down and try to give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe she was having a bad day, but we listened to her interact with all the other customers and after we realized that all the events that happened to us were not just coincedences and that she definetely did them all purposefully, we decided to say something. We go up to her and say "hey we want to give the the benefit of the doubt because we obviously don't know what your going through but we just don't understand what we did to deserve service like that, like having our food thrown at us and being mocked". She rolls her eyes at us for the whole time we're talking and then says back, "i'm sorry but do you not tip your baristas!?" we say back, " we have cash and we tip when we are respected by the baristas but before we even could you treated us with so much disrepsect". she laughs and goes "i'm sorry my service isn't good enough for you, do you and your friend want a granola bar for my horrible service?" we say back "No we aren't here asking for pity food, we just wanted tell you that how you treated us made us feel so disrespected." This barista literally couldn't care less about what we were saying. She goes "well you're holding the line up!" so we leave. My friend, left in tears because of her horrible attitude. We are still in shock by how rude she was to us. I really love this cafe and I love the owner but due to the barista I don't think we will ever go back. Tip or no tip (and we were planning on tipping with our cash!) , that is not how you talk to someone. read more

The latte lives up to their latte art. Seriously. If you're in the area, I would pass up Starbucks to grab a latte here. If you have time to sit and study, the ambience is perfect. There is a staircase and lofted area near the front of the cafe, which blocks the back from noise from the street and up at the cashier. But, if you want to people watch, there are also some seats facing out the window to watch the Cobble Hill scene. And 10/10 for Instagramming options. read more

I went for breakfast Saturday. Really nice space. Coffee just ok, had a bit of a burnt flavor. Ordered the baked eggs and creamed mushroom toast, but it wasn't as advertised. A toast is an open face sandwich, but it was a skillet. Creamed mushrooms should be like a chunky sauce, but it was instead very large, dry pieces of mushroom. The combo was bad. The worst part is when I told them as I was walking out, they seemed unconcerned and not the least sorry I got something I didn't order. This lovely cafe has somehow become my go to coffee shop over the past year. They're in a great location on Atlantic, their coffee is delicious, and the inviting space almost always sways me in the direction of lounging for a bit. I wouldn't come here for a big meal but if you're in the mood for a light snack I recommend the avocado toast with a hard boiled egg.
