This is as authentic Italian as you will get without getting a passport to Italy or going to New York City. We went here on two occasions and twice the food and staff of Suttons exceeded our expectations. My wife and her family are as Brooklyn Italians as you can get, and they rave about the authenticity of the food. The pasta is fresh; seafood is memorable; and the bread pudding, although not an Italian dish, is to die for. In fact, we went here just to enjoy their world famous bread pudding. The service is impeccable. My wife asked for fresh garlic in her oil to dip her bread in. Although not something that is requested on a regular basis, the wait staff were on top of it and she got fresh garlic immediately. Our water was always filled, the bread basket was never empty and the service never stopped. I ordered the seafood pasta. Besides my wife's late grandmother's version and the one on Brooklyn, this was the best I have ever had. The seafood tasted like Kentucky borders an ocean, and the pasta is perfectly al dente. I would have ordered another serving, but dessert awaits, We had dinner at the Merrick Inn the previous night. Suttons is far a better establishment when it comes to food, drinks and service. We used to love eating here. The last couple of times have proven the place has really gone down. We were lead to the outside eating area through the smoking area outside the front of the restaurant. If you want to eat outside here, bring your fly swatter because you'll need it. We were bombarded with hundreds of flies. The waitress dos t take our food order for about 20 minutes. Luckily we had ordered the kids' food. So they finished before we even got a chance to order. Therefore we decided to get ours to go. Service was awful. Also there was an extremely loud, poor musician blasting his noise which added to the poor ambience. And a dog was at a table next to us. So, I have reviewed this place before but I'm learning that sometimes you just have to know what to order at a restaurant. That being said, I've been here many times. It is one of the only restaurant options near my house that is locally owned (first/main criteria for me when deciding where to dine!). I have to say that I have never had a bad pasta dish there and the pizzas are great, but I have to say two times I had a steak there, it did not met my expectations. But that doesn't keep me from going back. I love so many other things on their menu (eggplant parmesan, diavlo pasta, veggie pizza, scallops and pasta....). I was not impressed with Sutton's. I promised myself after leaving Sutton's the next time I enter a restaurant and it has a funky smell, that's not attributed to smells coming out of the kitchen, leave immediately. The smell was a huge turnoff. The only reason I'm giving two stars is because the food was decent but not outstanding. We arrived about 4:30pm. Had a fly around our table the entire time we were there, that would not leave. My husband had the seared scallops, his favorite, but said they were tough. As usual I had to take most of my entrée, eggplant parmesan, home. The waitress ask if she could put mine in a take home box. I said "thank you, yes". She returned later with my take home box. Which I immediately added our bread to the take home box. The eggplant parmesan was put in the take home container upside down. All the spaghetti on top which meant that the eggplant would be extra soggy. Probably will be thrown out. For that she received only a 15% tip. It was proof to me that she could have cared less about our her customers. Probably never going back to Sutton's. Should have read some reviews. Olive garden is better.. read more

Went at 3pm on a Saturday. Was busy. Wife ordered Mediterranean pasta with scallops. Server let her switch to linguini instead of penne and add capers. I had the Italian combo sandwich (hot). Came here for a late night bite since we arrived at our downtown Lexington hotel relatively late on a Tuesday night. I ordered the Chicago beef sandwich. The description of the sandwich was a hoagie with beef dipped completely in au jus. However, upon eating the sandwich, I found that for some reason there was sausage in the center. I read and re-read the description to make sure I had ordered correctly. I don't know if they thought I wouldn't notice the sausage if they put beef around it? My boyfriend had the wings which he liked. If the bartender hadn't been so nice I would've given this place one star. The other patrons were noisy. Beer selection was pretty good. We are from Iowa and we visited Sutton's on March 20 2013. We saw a billboard sign and decided to give it a try. We couldn't have been more pleased!! The food was great! The service was awesome (loved Danielle!) Everyone we met there was friendly! People would stop to talk to us on their way out and we even met some people who were from Iowa! The "owner" stopped by our table to see how we were doing and if we were enjoying our dinner! I highly recommend Sutton's! I have been to Sutton's 3 times. Each time the service and food were great, but tonight was really over and above anything I ever would have expected. I decided to stop and see if they had space tonight despite being New year's, and they let me know they would fit me in immediately. When they asked who would comprise the party, I mentioned it was myself and my fiance and that we wanted to eat here to ring in the new year because this is the place we had dinner the night we were engaged last month. Cory asked me our story and told the manager and owner and they all came to congratulate us and offer us free drinks. Cory was also the most attentive and genuine waiter ever. He was very positive and a joy to talk to despite really tragic current circumstances. While speaking with the owner, I also learned they will customize any order and was able to get blackened beef and gnocchi on a meal normally served with chicken in penne. The meatballs, chicken gorgonzolla, and chocolate mousse were also all phenomenal. We also discussed them catering the wedding, and Cory was like yeah they said I can take the rest of the day off to travel and serve y'all's wedding. Needless to say, we will be back frequently as this is our new favorite restaurant and I'm sure will have many more happy memories here. read more

Stuffed mushrooms are to die for. I recommend the appetizer sampler, it is yummy. Meatballs and pepperoni pups that go with it are great as well. What can I say, everything on the menu is great. I've been to Sutton's twice and the truth is there really isn't much that sets this place apart. I will say the calamari was pretty poor, not really crispy, kind of chewy, but the banana peppers with it were good as was the sauce. The chicken fingers and onion rings while above average wouldn't be a reason to make a trip here. Eating-in: The atmosphere was very nice, it has a distinct motif. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the food was excellent. It seems that they make most of their food from scratch, so far as I can tell. Try the bread pudding if you can manage to save some room for dessert (that can be difficult, given the massive portions of an average meal). Carry-out: Completely painless and quick experience. I had ordered by phone and walked out the door with my food in the span of about fifteen minutes. For about $10 I had a very nice and filling lunch. I'm a work nights and it is nice to find a place that is actually open when I get out of work. I got the Dixie chicken sandwich and chips for 9 bucks. The sandwich was very good, chips were a little dry but I enjoyed the meal. Atmosphere was nice. Since it was late noise level was low. read more

Had the Sriracha burger for lunch today and was one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. It was cooked medium and with the jalapeño chips on it a nice kick. So, I've had catering from here and it was excellent. Having said that, I ate in the restaurant once before and it was ok. My sister and I took my daughter here for lunch today. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. The host literally couldn't be bothered to talk to us. I said hi, table for three, he looked at us, grabbed menus and walked away. Didn't say a word. We followed hoping that we were supposed to. He got to a table, laid the menus down and walked away again...not a peep. Sooooo.. ok. We looked at the menu, and were discussing what we wanted when our waitress asked what we wanted to drink. Well, I wanted a beer, but super awesome host dude didn't give us a drink menu. After prying our the draft beer list from the server we ordered drinks. Eventually ordered, I got a KY Brown, not complicated, right? Turns out they didn't have tomatoes, no big deal except the sever told me they didn't have them because they were too expensive. Really? Deeply disappointed all around. Just got back from yet ANOTHER great meal here at Sutton's. Man, I moved to Lexington in December, but I used to visit town a lot before I moved here. I discovered this place earlier last year. Now since we live here, it's becoming a regular spot and might be my favorite place in town to eat. Had the Manzo Pasta Parmesan tonight. Huge portion, and I could only finish half of it. Only $14 (if I recall correctly) with tender delicious steak in the dish. That's a bargain in my book. They serve warm crusty bread and olive oil with herbs to dip it in with your meal. So good. The Chicken Parmesan is a favorite of my wife and daughter, and I've sampled theirs and can fully see why. I had the Pasta Giovanni a week or so ago, and it was amazing. You can get it vegetarian, or with chicken, or with shrimp, or scallops. I had mine vegetarian, not for any other reason than that's what I preferred at the time, and it was full of great flavor. My father in law had the Mahi Limone tonight and enjoyed it a lot. In fact, the people eating at the table next to us raved about their seafood platter dinner, telling us they get it every time they come. Sutton's has a LOT of great looking seafood on the menu, but I tend to go pasta when I eat there. There is so much good stuff I could eat there every day and have something different. I haven't tried their pizzas yet either, and they are supposed to be very, very good. They're on my to-do list. I have had some of the appetizers....the pepperoni pups are my daughter's favorite, and I love them too. I've also enjoyed the stuffed mushrooms, and the meatball appetizers in previous visits. I have yet to be even a little bit disappointed in the food when eating here. The service has always been great, even though I've had different servers every time. We had a new fellow (so he informed us) serving us tonight, and he was enthusiastic and on point. Look, nobody is perfect, and I admit, they did drop the ball on the caesar salad I ordered with my dinner, forgetting to bring it out, but in the end, I didn't really need it as, like I said, I could only finish half of my main dish. Our server was very apologetic....wish I could remember his name, but it escapes me...and of course it was removed from the bill. No harm no foul. You might find cheaper places, but prices are very fair for what you get here - immense portions, top quality home-made taste, great service. They have a full bar, too, with a nice selection of Bourbon. The atmosphere is cool, and casual, with pics of classic gangsters adorning the walls. Nothing pre-packaged and warmed here as far as I could tell. Flat out, I would rather eat here than a place like Olive Garden or some other chain any day of the week, and you should too if I say so myself. They over charged my card by $102. I didn't realize they did that until my card got declined the next day. After that embarrassment it took about 8 phone calls and four days to get my money back. I was barely offered an apology for that incredible inconvenience. On another note their food is way over priced for the quality you get.
