Have to leave a two stars based on their rice. Ordered take out from here and got three of their hand rolls (1 dragon, 2 unagi). Their rice was not soft or cooked properly. Some bit of the roll had hard rice and had a dry feeling to it. It's a good thing the unagi had sauce to make it a little better but I wouldn't recommend the hand rolls unless they cook the rice better. It is a such place after all read more

Sushiya has become my go-to for those "oh crap, I'm starving at work and need something reasonably healthy-ish, RIGHT NOW" moments. The couple that runs this place is very cute and friendly, as others have pointed out. The restaurant itself is itty-bitty, so I would recommend take-out. Their sushi is affordable, so it is a good option for a cheapie lunch. Food-wise, my coworkers swear by the crunchy don (tempura fried veggie fritters and spicy ahi over rice). Personally, I'm more partial to Tamura's poke/spicy ahi, and I've found the tempura fritter to be just a little bit oily for my taste. Just a matter of preference. I prefer the hand rolls... At two-ish bucks a pop, they pack some bang for your buck. My favorites are the veggie hand roll and the California hand roll with unagi. The shrimp tempura hand roll is also a good way to satisfy those fried-food cravings without going too far off the deep end, and I haven't found it to be quite as oily as the veggie fritters. Wow! I mean wow! I tried poke bowl from many different places, but I think they might have the best one I have ever had in Hawaii. I've been to many places including Nico's, Fort Ruger Market, ono seafood, off the hook, Tamamura. This place has the spicy ahi that has enough kick and shoyu wasabi salmon which was sweet and flavorful. I was shocked to see them making the bowl fresh one after placing the order. It was packed with unagi ,cucumber crab and avocado. The bugggah was good size! I also ordered a Spicy ahi bowl with shrimp tempura and they let you have it on salad if you ask. Winnahs! The next day I wanted to get Spam musubis to take to the beach! They were super Onolicious because they put a Teri sauce on the rice. The kids loved them. I think Shushiya is the only take out sushi place in Kaimuki. I had been here once before, and the owner-man gave me incorrect change. I hadn't been back until yesterday because I was craving sushi so badly. They have A LOT of options to choose from. You have your basic nigiri sets and handrolls, but they also have curry, salads and bentos. I had the dynamite roll ($9). It was huge....I almost wasn't able to finish it and it came with a small container of miso soup too! I think the sushi and poke here is awesome. They have a great spicy, crunchy roll and their chicken teriyaki bowl is really, really good. It's some of the best and most convenient poke/sushi around. The only downside is the parking lot isn't that great but usually your able to find parking along Wai'alae avenue. I hope you enjoy this much as we do. read more

There are small tables in the establishment, but it's small and might be uncomfortable as people go in and out and it gets crowded. Four Star Yelp rating and a measly $ sign usually isn't a good combination when you're looking for good quality sushi but we took a gamble. As we sat there I noted the floors, garbage can, walls, chairs all looked like they've never seen a sponge before and I wondered 'what does the kitchen look like?' But the infamous Green card from DHS was proudly posted on the door so I figured we should be safe. Throughout our meal I couldn't stop exclaiming "this is sooo good and sooo fresh!" My spicy ahi salad was top notch quality. The greens were bouncy fresh and the ahi-while it was covered in spicy sauce-was notably good quality and fresh. None of that tendony cheap chewy ahi here! For the daughter of a fisherman who grew up eating sashimi straight out the water on the boat this is a huge thing! This place is fantastic. Unassuming place in a small strip mall. I got the Crunchy Spicy Ahi bowl. It is like it sounds and tastes wonderful. The crunchy part consists of fried vegetables. It paired well with the spicy ahi. Portion was perfect. The restaurant itself seems to be run by a family, with a kid splitting attention between iPad programming and playing with the parent/guardian at the register. With sentimental piano music playing in the background, it truly felt like the end credits of family film. Really sweet place. read more

This little sushi shop is located on the right hand side while driving down Waialae Avenue right next to Boston's Pizza and before Tamura's Fine Wine & Liquors. Inside there's about three small round tables and two counters with stools. So just be warned that this place is VERY SMALL. As I stepped inside I immediately thought this was going to be like a Kozo or Ninja Sushi but in my opinion it was WAY better! What's not to like? The mango was very flavorful and the boba bubbles were quite interesting. At first the boba/bubble balls were warm and soft then they got chewy (half way through my meal) and by the end it got semi chewy and frozen! Although this is CASH ONLY, I still like it. Om nom nom nom...that's the sound of munching down the sushi at this quaint and quick sushi shop! Fantastic prices, and huge selection of sushi, nigiri, hand rolls, etc. and the owner is sooooo nice! My personal recommendation: The dynamite roll (crab, shrimp tempura, spicy ahi, cheese, sweet/sour sauce....yum!) and you can't go wrong with the simple spicy tuna hand roll! They also have a small bubble tea selection, but I didn't have the time, nor the large appetite to try that along with all the sushi :-( Next time I'll give it a shot. While this is probably not the kindest time to post a negative review, I feel compelled to do so. For years, we loved to get take-out from Sushiya. The elderly couple who ran the place were friendly and fast, while the food was both affordable and delicious. Now, however, the menu has changed, offering less sushi for more money. Additionally, the shrimp tempura was mushy and the batter distasteful, the tuna roll had precious little tuna (that tasted like cat food), and the teri chicken bowl was definitely not worth $9. I truly hope (and would suggest) that the new owners sit down with the previous owners and find out how to more closely emulate the former business model. read more

I, as well as many of my friends and family, have frequented Sushiya for years. It was a great mom and pop establishment with consistently good food. Since the new owners have taken over, it has completely changed. The food is not of the quality that it was, nor have I, and others, experienced consistency in their sushi and other dishes. Also, their prices have gone up for smaller portions. The last and final time I will pay for their food was last week. I returned my purchase and the cashier denied there was anything wrong with it and refused to refund me. I along with my friends and family will not go back. I got a spicy ahi donburi to go; the gentleman was so friendly when he took my order & I was pleasantly surprised when I got home to realize he had also given me some miso soup. Score! I also later realized that while the sign said open still, I was pretty close to closing so I truly appreciate the quality of food and service I received. I would rate it as a 3.5 but I'll give them a 4 since sushi out here is always fresh and delicious. We came here one day on our vacation, as it was the closest sushi place to the Airbnb we were staying at. While it was pretty tasty, it wasn't the best (or worst) sushi place we went to while we were on vacation in the area, and I had so much fish on this trip I'm surprised I wasn't growing fins on my back. Spicy Ahi -- really fresh chunks of tuna, with a nice spicy sauce spread on the fish and not mixed up mush. Dynamite sushi -- this one was as good as it looks in the pics here -- it's basically shrimp tempura / crab roll with spicy ahi chunks (like spicy poke) on top. Really yummy albeit a little messy -- keep napkins handy, lol. Cons: Speaking of messy -- what on earth is up with the packaging here?? We got the order to go and things were packed in clear plastic containers, which is fine and all if these packages actually had something to secure them shut! Instead, everything slid around in these containers that could not stay shut (they put rubber bands around everything but it still made for a bit of a slimy mess in the bag which had to definitely be kept upright). Maybe it's a pet peeve for me, but it was pretty annoying, since we had to juggle the food back to our place. Parking is a little tough here, the lot is small and street spots in the area seem to be metered. read more

THE best place to grab some sushi for lunch. I can't recommend their Spicy Ahi and Shrimp Tempura enough. Although the prices have risen a little over the years, it's still worth it t to support a small local business. The owners are incredibly sweet, and will often give you free miso soup if you dine in. I always order their Spicy Ahi Nigiri... it's the perfect blend of spice and flavor! If I'm extra hungry, I'll opt for their Spicy Ahi Donburi. The Dynamite Maki also uses the same spicy topping and is also really tasty. A little less expensive are their handrolls, for around $2 each you get a decent size handroll! Two handrolls definitely fill me up. I always leave satisfied when I eat at Sushiya because of their tasty, relatively inexpensive sushi and the warm mom-and-pop atmosphere. read more

Quality of rice in the sushi was not acceptable. The rice was hard and old. The Masago sushi was discolored and the quality of the fish was not up to par. I contacted the owner to inform him of the situation and he was not helpful. He did not try to make things right even when his staff tried to charge me $9 for tip without my consent. Sushiya is in the heart of Kaimuki town, within walking distance of the Kaimuki rec center and the 7-Eleven. You can find alot of handrolls and value oriented items, or if you fancy, the more exotic items that will make your eating experience much more fascinating. The store is next to the Boston's Pizza and on the bus lines, if you get around that way. There is very limited parking, with a few stalls to share with Boston's and street parking wherever you can find it. There is limited seating in Sushiya, so more often than not, it's used as a takeout place for all things Japanese and sushi. This place is a relatively new joint, so I see this place on my commute in the morning and afternoon. The bubble drinks are pretty good and I have to admit some of the red dragon rolls are delicious too. Only thing that sucks is that they don't accept credit cards. read more

I've been coming here for years. They have a wide range of selection from food options to even pricing. The rolls are reasonable and they pack it. I am obsessed with their crunchy veggie don!! Usually the husband is at the register and his wife is in the back cooking and rolling sushi. The owners are the sweetest and most polite. Always made to order even the shrimp tempura. It tastes crispy and fresh not frozen. I could be wrong don't quote me. The one downside to this place is cash only. I was lucky when i came the other day i had cash on me which is rare. First time i came i walked in and ordered. I waited a while so after that i phone in my order and it's ready when i pickup. They have a lot of choices but the dynamite maki is so good i usually just order that. I will update when I've tried other items which I'm sure are all of great quality and super fresh.
