Been recently exploring the eats in Maple Ridge and am I surprised the number of fantastic restaurants out here! Sushi Umibe is another new find I just recently tried today! This cute Japanese restaurant is popular for their set menus and bentos for their portion and fantastic prices! We ordered the Deluxe Set and the assorted sashimi. The assorted sashimi had 16 pieces in total and had your usual selection of sashimi (tako, salmon, wild salmon, red clam, toro and tai) - I'd probably skip this next time cause the bentos and set menu are comparably more attractive in terms of price and portion! The deluxe set is only available during lunch. It comes with everything you see pictured (oishi, sashimi, nigiri, karasge, yakitori, teriyaki chicken/beef, tuna tataki, salade, miso soup and rice) and what a deal for $21.95! The portion is so generous that it's definitely shareable! Or enough for some great leftovers for lunch the next day! They have quite a variety of set menu but I think this will be my go to order even in my next visit, but would opt for the beef teriyaki next time cause there was quite a bit of chicken in the set menu with karaage and yakitori too! There is a female waitress who always serves us with a bad attitude, she throws our plates when it is her turn to serve our table and I have asked her what is wrong and she just walks away, she is extremely rude, today I left a tip for the guy who served me and she went to my vehicle to throw me the coins, I asked her what her problem was, and she said she didn't want our money, I told her that she has always had a bad attitude and she yelled at me to never come back. This is terrible situation when an employee mistreats customers behind the owner's back. read more

Sushi Umibe is my all time favorite Japanese Restaurant. No other resto beats their Miso Soup, salad dressing, Sushi and Rolls. I always go here. The food is always great. This is hands down the best sushi restaurant that I have found. It beats the ones in Vancouver! Great value, friendly service most of the time, fast, and delicious sushi! I have been coming here for over two years and am a regular. Everything I've tried has been amazing! I especially love the house roll. It is very fresh and packed full! The tempura is the best I've ever had with a very light and crispy batter and never greasy. They always allow me to change the lunch or dinner box from chicken teriyaki to tofu without a hassle. The special rolls are huge and very ungraceful to eat but so delicious. These include the dragon roll, the summer roll, crazy girl roll, etc. I wouldn't say it is authentic Japanese but they have some very fun combinations! And everything is of high quality! I have lived in Maple Ridge for many years now, and tried several different sushi places around. I was always left disappointed. For awhile I had given up finding good sushi here, so I would travel to Langley, Surrey, or Port Coquitlam for a few of my favorites. Then one day a friend recommended Umibe. I am so glad they did! Their rolls, cooked dishes, nigiri, everything I have tried has been really really good. I'm sure many sushi fans know that consistency is key with a sushi restaurant. I have had nothing but good experiences from Umibe. Have had many other places be good one day, and not another. That kills the experience. Staff is friendly, inside is nicely decorated, and being a frequent customer, I have frequently been given complimentary sides/dishes/nigiri to try out! read more

This is the best sushi place in the Vancouver area. I have yet to find a favourite sushi restaurant in Vancouver itself, but when I venture out to Maple Ridge to see my boyfriend, we always hit up Sushi Umibe. They have so many different kinds of sushi and they are all delicious. My favourite roll, which is a roll unique to Sushi Umibe, is the Mexican roll. It has a tortilla inside, cheese, salsa, beef, and lettuce, and is drizzled in their own sour cream sauce. It is so good, I could not recommend it enough. You also can't go wrong with their spicy special rolls. Prices are average, it is by no means cheap, but it is not overpriced. It is definitely worth every penny. Love this place! read more

Small restaurant but cozy and friendly. There are tables and booths available. The booths had lots of space and a privacy curtain which gave the dining experience that authentic Japanese feel. After many years of going to another sushi establishment in town we found ourselves trying Sushi Umibe for the first time on a friend's recommendation. Wow we were impressed! Not only was the food delicious, the service was some of the best service we have ever received. What a pleasant experience they provide. Meh...nothing special. The ambiance is alright, sort of drab and done with a plan but not quite executed with style. Service was not great with the lady throwing down our menus and walking away. No smile or welcoming feeling. Our Miso was DELICIOUS! Tea was hot and drinkable. We orders bento boxes and at $9.98 we were pleased. Don't be fooled. I got a small sliver of over cooked beef and a huge mound of sprouts. Yummy sprouts, not so yummy beef. The California rolls tasted like they were made in advance without enough mayo. I read through some of the reviews on here and felt I needed to increase this restaurant's score. I can't argue about other people's experiences if they had a bad time or a waitress was unkind -- but the food is so good. It doesn't deserve a 1 star at all. I live right across the street from this place and that is dangerous, because it's both affordable and delicious. If ever I want sushi I can walk a few feet and have some of the best Japanese food I've ever had. The prices are reasonable (for basic, non-specialty rolls the sushi is 3-5 dollars a roll.) Which is great. The portions on their non-sushi dishes are generous and also affordable. When I go I mainly have the same waitress, and she's sweet as can be. I can't understand why someone would complain about the service. Once when I was getting takeout she asked if I wanted some miso soup or water for my wait. I declined but it was really nice of her to ask. My boyfriend's favorite Japanese dish is chicken katsu, and he says it's the best he's had. And the sushi is close to the best sushi I've had. At least in Maple Ridge, where I've been to 5 different sushi places -- this is by far my favorite. Give it a chance. I couldn't be happier to live so close to it, I'm only bummed that I didn't give it a try for over a year. All the good sushi I could have had -- that time was wasted. read more

Just went in for the first time yesterday. What a cute little restaurant. It is tucked in, across from the value village strip mall on 207th between Lougheed and Dewdney Trunk. Tha atmosphere was nice, the dishes were cute. The service was okay. We did get left a bit long between courses and our waitress was not very friendly. We were very impressed with the food and the value. Everything we tried was good to great. The toro was fresh and delicious as was the scallop... Both are my benchmark tests for Sushi restaurants. The miso was rich and delicious and not too salty. We will definitely be coming back. It is a great little sushi place in the lower - mid range price range. read more

I have been to Umibe at least 20 times! Every time the service is great, the waitresses have trouble understanding English but are pleasant. I quite regularly order the spicy salmon sashimi, omg soooo good . Nice and fresh. I have also gone here for lunch with my friends at work ! We phone down our orders and they are waiting for us when we get there ! Great become we only get half hour for lunch! The prices are very reasonable and the food is great ! If I could give 0 stars I would. Twice Ive given this place a chance. First time, myself and 5 others sat down. No service what so ever for 45 minutes. Not even an acknowledgment that we were there. The second time, today, August 23rd 2015, I really wanted sushi, I called them to make a pickup order at 7:30pm, they close at 9pm, and without saying anything else told me, "We wont make food for you." Word for word. What the hell is wrong with them. I have been trying Sushi restaurants in Maple Ridge and I won't be back to this one. I wouldn't normally mention the parking lot but this one is really filthy. They should at least make the place look good. Inside the restaurant looks old, dingy and the booths look all scratched up. I wanted to sample this place to see if they get the basics right, they didn't. I ordered a california roll and tamago nigiri. The tamago was OK but the piece was really small. Other restaurants I go to don't skimp like this one. The california roll was bad. Almost no avocado and a lot of super fishy fake crab. The waitress got mad because we asked her for a high chair, she started telling us that she was not a babysitter and she ended up telling us to live if we weren't happy, of course that's what we did and never came back. So if you want to be treated like a person and not like a criminal don't go there. We were not impressed with the food, we had some deep fried tofu (small portion compared to other restaurants) that was hard to eat because the crust was so hard and the food was dangerously hot even after sitting for 15 minutes; the breaded fried potato with peas was served almost cold and mushy. Overall the the service and food was mediocre at best and my stomach was upset all day. Never going back! read more
