I've been here several times and keep coming back! Weekends get busy, but on weekdays you can practically have the place to yourself -- it's surprisingly calm compared to the chaos outside the curtain. I'm obsessed with the Chirashi Bowl. I keep trying to order something new, but it's just too good! After reading other reviews, I'm finally going to try the eel next time. Either way, I'll definitely be back!

Great donburi options as well as sushi sets, hand rolls, omakase courses, and sake. Great quiet atmosphere on a Wednesday night, tucked away from the usual industry city madness. The miso soup was uncommonly good and the complimentary appetizer pudding was one of my favorite eats of the year. I ordered the chef's choice chirashi and had a delightful rainbow of an eating experience. The eel was especially good and it isn't something I usually go for. The skin-on trout was also a pleasant surprise, and boy do I love a nice big ladling of ikura any day. Looking forward to coming back. I may end up ordering the same thing. Hopefully I will branch out.

My group came here for a little holiday lunch and it was just as good of an experience as I remember. The lunch omakase sets are very affordable at $50pp for the 10pc set. They are walk-in only and it wasn't too busy when I arrived and they let us sit down and chill out while we waited for the rest of our party to show. We received piece after piece of fresh nigiri and a few unique pieces that I'd never had before. This includes a monkfish liver and a small bowl of icefish. You'll have to be open to trying some unfamiliar seafood! However, if you have any allergies, make sure to inform them ahead of time as they allow you to substitute pieces with something you can eat! On this occasion, the chef also included a complimentary uni flight for my party and the Japan one was the best of the 3. Yum!

Tucked away towards the back sits a cozy counter with chef Kenji. I stopped by for a quick bite and ended up trying the omakase A set. It comes with 7 piece nigiri, hand roll, and dessert. Complimentary egg tart to start, the meal was very fresh and delicious. I paired with a hot sake. Kenji was attentive but did not rush, even with only a hand full of pieces. Overall very well made nigiri and hand roll. The dessert was made of red bean and also sweet and delectable. Price is a bit on the higher end for the amount, but overall great experience.

Another lovely lunch here, service was good despite chef only doing everything. The whole place was busy as there was a Japanese food expo on this weekend.

4.5 / 5.0 - Sushi Uesugi is a counter-only sushi restaurant at the end of the Food Hall inside Japan Village. On their official website, it says it's "Currently closed," but we just went yesterday for lunch based on recent reviews and it was indeed open. While it was still a good deal, especially compared to expensive sushi places in Manhattan, the prices had increased quite a bit from just a few months ago and they did not have any a la carte options available. Omakase Lunch Specials: - Sushi Omakase A ($40+): 7 pieces of nigiri, 1 hand roll and miso soup - Sushi Omakase B ($55+): 10 pieces of nigiri, 1 hand roll and miso soup - Sashimi Omakase ($60+): 5 kinds of sashimi, sushi rice and miso soup We ordered the Sushi Omakase B and sake. The alcoholic beverage options they had were 3 kinds of beer and 5 kinds of sake, which you can see in one of my photos, ranging from $8 - $21 for the sake. The sushi was amazing. They were high quality, with each piece being a bite of deliciousness. I absolutely loved the fatty tuna. I'm generally not a huge fan of marinated sushi, but even the marinated tuna hand roll with shiso was incredible. The miso soup was a bit too salty. And the service, unfortunately, was not as wonderful as the sushi. We went past 1pm and there were no other customers besides us while we were dining there. $55+ for lunch is not cheap and we were there to enjoy our dining experience. However, we felt extremely rushed and while the quality was top notch, we barely had time to enjoy each piece. The chef had cut up all of the fish in the beginning, which may be efficient, but is not what you would expect at an omakase place. He just served us one after another without a break, even when we hadn't finished the one before. I loved the sushi and would love to come back for the delicious sushi, but hope the service level improves.

We were staying at a hotel in the area and found this spot and the rest of Japan Village via Yelp. The review that said "reminded me of having stellar sushi in random subway stations in Japan" is what got me. One of my favorite sushi experiences to date is still the one on the 2nd floor of Tokyo station in Japan. Sushi Uesugi currently is accepting walk-ins only, no reservations. We arrived on Sunday at 11:45am, anticipating the 12pm opening hours. The restaurant was not open yet, and we could see the chef was still prepping. We waited about 15 minutes until the chef finally greeted us and let us know he needed 30 minutes to open. We wandered the Sunrise mart and killed some time, came back at 12:35pm and the restaurant was not yet open. We were seated at 12:45pm - the chef apologized and thanked us for waiting. We both opted for the Chef Omakase B set $42 for 10 piece nigiri, miso soup, and handroll. Overall, this was the best sushi we've had for the price since being in Japan. The nigiri is simple. For example, if you've been to other omakases, like Royal Izakaya in Philadelphia - it's not like that, but it's less than half that price tag. This is simple omakase. Fresh fish, on rice, with the chef's simple sauce and wasabi if you ask for it. This will not be the nigiri with special caviar on it for one dish, lime dustings on the next, etc. Each nigiri was the fish sliced by the chef, placed on the rice to make the nigiri, and brushed with his special sauce. The sushi is proper, the fish is hanging off each edge of the rice as it should be. My favorites were probably the salmon, scallop, and spanish mackerel. The last hand roll was my favorite - with squid, uni, rice - it was a nice texture between the nori, the bite of the squid, and the salty creaminess of the uni. I would not hesitate to return my next time in town, and if you're a fan of sushi - give it a shot! I don't think you can find this quality of nigiri for $42 anywhere else ... that I know of anyway! Overall, this would have been a solid 4 stars - but the delay of seating/opening is why I knocked down one star. Next time I return, I'll update!

I didn't know what expect because there wasn't a lot of reviews. We opted for the $85 sashimi omakase that came with soup, a bowl or rice, sashimi & dessert. For the amount it's a bit pricey and I should've gotten the $75 sushi omakase. The fish serving is smaller than other places I've gone to. Besides small portion and the price, everything was otherwise very fresh. & I absolutely love the matcha putting in the end with brown sugar. Glad I tried it but wouldn't come back.

I've been wanting to try their omakase for a while, but due to their short lunch hours (12-2:30PM), I wasn't able to. Arrived on a Friday at 12:10PM and there was only two people sitting at the bar (only bar seating and very limited). Got lucky that the other had just arrived as there was only 1 person taking care of everything so it was easier for the chef to prepare the sushi. It was a one man business and I feel like that affected the experience. Don't get me wrong, the service was not bad at all and the chef tried to engage with all of us but at one point, when more people arrived, I felt like he was getting overwhelmed and felt a bit bad. They should've had an extra person since it was an observed holiday (12/31). The menu options were limited (only the Chirashi bowl, Omakase A, B and C were offered). I opted for the omakase B (10 pieces, miso soup and a handroll). The miso soup was too salty for my taste and we never got the handroll. As for the 10 pieces, they were quite interesting as the chef did not give us a lot of the usual ones (salmon, squid, lean tuna, yellowtail), which I appreciate. The fish portions were extremely generous, for some pieces, I felt like I needed a little more rice. The chef was very nice and offered to swap the last piece for the Santa Barbara uni as it was just delivered. My favorite were the Hokkaido uni, the Santa Barbara uni (I might be biased since uni is my ultimate favorite), the scallop, the madai and the halfbeak (sayori, first time trying). The fatty tuna had a slight fishy taste. Overall, it was a good deal for lunch ($42 for 10pcs). The chef was very nice, and provided a great service.

I was slightly ashamed that with all the times I go to Japan Village for shopping (especially Sunrise), I didn't know they had a sit down sushi place with omakase. They have a spot that does bentos, rolls and onigiri (Obentoyasan) but that is way more casual. In fact, I wouldn't have known this spot exists if not for peeking out the window to the left while heading towards the courtyard. The entrance is located behind the takoyaki spot (hachi) and directly behind the closed down Brooklyn Steak and lobster. There were only two people working, the server and the sushi chef. It is a walk in spot and I was immediately seated. There were 5 people there when I arrived, a couple and a trio. The place is relatively cozy and could sit up to 10-12 seats. The server was really nice and tried to make sure I understood what was going on in the menu. It is a relatively small menu with only a la Carte nigiri (price per piece) and omakase and kaisen options (including chirashi). Which makes sense given the other options on site. It is not quiet but it makes sense she to its surroundings. Unless it is a place well known for its omakase, I typically try out sushi spots through its nigiri first before delving into omakase. They did have omakase A ($50, which the couple told me they ordered), a sushi omakase b ( which one of the trio ordered since they had a hand roll) and the sashimi omakase. The reason I gave this place three stars is due to timeliness and the quality of the food I ordered. I had ordered 4 pieces of nigiri (kanpachi, shima aji, madai and hamachi). They didn't have madai so I switched it out for scallop and the server let me know that as soon as possible . But it took quite a while for the chef to actually acknowledge me and to do my order. The nice couple next to me had at least 3-4 of their omakase options given before I even started. And it took so long that they gave me a complimentary miso soup for waiting In terms of the fish, I definitely had better. The fish itself was totally good! But the kanpachi was really wet. The shima aji rice fell apart as soon as I lifted it up. The scallop was good with the citrus zest but the large amount of rocky salt made it weird. The hamachi was fine. I didn't order more because it took longer than expected and I wasn't impressed by the fish But with the total cost being around 23 dollars ~ I wasn't mad at it. It just not a place I would go out of my way to eat the food there. It might be worth another try for lunch, or way after new years. The omakase options is a good deal especially in this city.

Came to try the omakase and the ingredients tasted decent and service was alright but for the price point there are a number of better options. If you're not full however since it's hot a food court you have options for additional food. Place did feel a little small so if it does get busy it will probably be a little cramped.

The best thing about this place is the friendly waitress, the pilsner beer, and the special sochu. Otherwise, its a good place to kill time with slow omakase progression. Sushi itself is below par in taste and quality.

    Jessica W.

The sushi here was very fresh and delicious, probably serving one of the highest quality fish in NYC. I got the salmon and yellowtail and it melted in my mouth. The food came very fast and overall I was very happy with the experience.

Food: 3/5 I'm a huge sushi fan, so I was excited when I saw a deluxe sashimi set on the menu. Unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark. The scallop was thinly sliced and lacked the rich texture I was hoping for. The salmon and other cuts were decent, but short and oddly shaped--chunky yet small, which made the whole presentation feel a bit off for something labeled deluxe. We also tried to branch out and ordered the short rib entree. For $21, it was shockingly small--definitely a single-person portion, not sharable. I added extra ikura to a salmon donburi bowl for $2, but it was barely a teaspoon's worth--just enough to say it was there. Oddly, the salmon slices in that bowl were thinner than the sashimi we had just eaten, and overall, it left me still hungry even after sharing a maki roll. Lastly, my husband ordered a green salad, which somehow took the entire meal service to arrive. When it finally came, it was just plain romaine, cucumbers, radish, and dressing. For a dinner that clocked in at over $150 (after tip), we definitely left underwhelmed. Service: 3/5 This part wasn't bad, just confusing. We were seated quickly, but the pacing of the meal was strange. Our seaweed salad and soups came out promptly, but the green salad came last, after the hot dishes and nearly after my husband finished eating. Also, a small thing--but when I'm paying $16 for four oysters, I want to know what kind they are. The menu just said "West Coast oysters," but our server couldn't tell us the variety or origin. Not a huge deal, but it added to a general lack of polish that didn't quite match the pricing. I don't think I'd return. For the price, there are better sushi options in Brooklyn with higher quality, better portions, and clearer service. Still, I appreciate new spots opening up in the neighborhood, and I'm always happy to try something new. Hopefully they refine the menu and service with time.

We started with the salmon belly carpaccio which I'd say isn't really a carpaccio because the salmon isn't sliced as thinly as you'd expect. But! I mention that just to set expectations. Nomenclature aside, it's an excellent appetizer. Served in a truffle and ponzu sauce, the salmon is lightly seared which yields two different textures to the fish. It practically melts in your mouth. Highly recommend this dish. For my entree I went with the trio don, which is 6 pieces of sashimi served over your choice of plain or sushi rice (sushi rice for me). The fish was fresh and flavorful. The portion was perfect for me. My boyfriend ordered a yellowtail roll and enjoyed that as well. We also shared a carafe of the cold house sake. I'd definitely come back and try more items on the menu. It's great for sharing and trying new dishes. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the prices were very reasonable.

Lots of people came in and out for takeout orders so that seems to be more of the target audience. Service was quick and polite, we were there until 9:30 and they definitely seemed ready for us to be out of there before the 10PM closing time. As for the specialty rolls, there were some pretty creative options - don't shy away from seemingly odd combinations because the flavors really do work well together. I appreciated the rice:fish ratio on all the rolls, the rice was a thin layer letting the flavor of the other ingredients really come through. The plain spicy tuna roll on the other hand was filled with spicy tuna mixed with something crunchy - maybe puffed rice? It seemed to be an unnecessary filler, I would have preferred just fish. I enjoyed the Lovers Dream and Golden Sunset roll the most. While I was debating it while ordering, in hindsight I would definitely get two rolls per person, maybe more if you're really hungry.

After our recent trip to Japan my husband and I were craving quality sushi and had read great…read morethings about Oita. Happy to say they were true and we will definitely be back! Above all, the fish quality and freshness is excellent and the nigiri felt especially authentic (not too much rice, sizable cuts of fish done in the traditional style). The akami and hamachi belly were particularly great. The toro scallion and king salmon crunch hand rolls were also favorites. Our opinions were more split on the spicy tuna crispy rice (I loved, husband was more lukewarm) and dumplings (obviously very freshly prepared but quite fried). The overall ambience is airy, quiet and calm and service was warm and fast. We would have loved to try the cocktails as they sound really interesting -- next time!

Beautiful space with fun sushi rolls in Park Slope!…read more The inside of the restaurant is very sleek and minimalist with nice wooden accents- very calming. The space is pretty large, with a good amount of tables in addition to bar seating. I split the tuna crispy rice and the signature roll set and it was plenty of food for two. The signature roll set had an assortment of interesting and unique rolls ranging from truffle to mango- my fave was the New York crunch w potato crisps on top. The tuna crispy rice was also a bit different- served as a tartare w crispy rice chips for dipping. Very crispy and tasty though! Service was super attentive and very welcoming. Definitely will be coming back if I'm in the area.
