    Gyusugi Udon at Gohei
    Eric H.

Japan Village in Brooklyn -- where you step in for culture and end up questioning everything you thought you knew about noodle soup. First stop: Gohei. The stall hits you with nine different noodle bowls -- soba or udon, your choice... but choose wisely, warrior. I learned the hard way that not every soup and noodle combo is meant to be. The Gyusuji (sweet beef offal broth) is straight-up legendary if you go with udon. Go with soba, and it's like putting a Prius engine in a monster truck -- not built for it, my friend. They even throw in tendon, tripe, and konnyaku (aka devil's tongue -- sounds hardcore, tastes amazing). Bottom line: this place will humble your noodle game real quick. #japanvillage #brooklynfoodie #nyceats #foodhall #udonlover #noodleszn #foodieinthebigapple2025 #nycfoodadventure #brooklynlife #foodiefinds #japanesefood #nycfoodguide #foodreview #masculineeats #foodiejourney

    Spicy pork udon
    Chris J.

I got spicy pork udon. I'm used to Korean spicy pork which is a go to favorite but this was absolutely brutal spicy hot. 5 of us tried it. Just way too spicy. Well prepared great udon n pork but just too spicy.

    Tempura udon

This restaurant is in Japan Village. They have counter top seating. Or there are some tables shared with other restaurants. Foods are served in plastic containers. You could bring food from other restaurants or even from the market. I had ebi tempura udon and cold soba. Both dishes were great! Although i have to give 4 stars because some tempuras were quite soggy. Udon was served hot, in plastic containers. Favorful broth was spot on. Noodle was tender and held flavor well. Cold soba was refreshing. Noodles were keep cutting off, but tasted great. Portion was a bit small but not bad at all. I would try sometimes 4/5.

    Niku and gyusuji udon

Udon here is satisfactory. Definitely a classic spot to get your warmth in the winter. Definitely not the best udon I had but it's never that busy and udon comes out pretty quick and easy. If you're in the mood for meat definitely get the Niku udon. I tried that along with my tendon udon with stewed beef (gyusuji) and a side with chicken wings. The chicken wings were a good add on but super oily. I think as a spot in Japan village it's pretty good since it's the main udon spot but I would probably try another dish from here another time as nothing in particular was amazing and the udon wasn't handmade or anything like that (that I can tell). It's just pretty pricey for a non handmade udon dish compared to others I've had. I think the ramen spot or the curry spot is better here in Japan Village.

Definitely one of the worst udon/noodle places I've tried. For the chicken dish, the chicken breast was extremely tough and flavorless to the point where it was inedible and painful to eat. For the other dish, the meat was overly salty. The udon for both was alright but not really hot, just warm. But the lack of vegetables then lack of edible tasty meat really made this one of the not so good meals I've had in the area just to be aware of.

Gyusuji: udon with beef tendon, daikon, and stewed konnyaku
    Emil C.

This was one of the stalls in the Japan Village food hall within Industry City. I ordered their gyusuji. It was udon with beef tendon, daikon, and stewed konnyaku. I liked that the broth was clear. Sometimes I'll need a break from a thick rich broth. It wasn't used to the flat udon. It looked more like regular noodles. It wasn't anything fancy. It was a pretty basic bowl of noodles, but it was good if you like eating tendon. If you come at a busy time, you might need to hunt for a spot to eat your food.

    Chicken Karaage: Take-out. $3.21; $3.50 with tax.

BLUF: Good Niku Udon soup. We were impressed with our first visit to Gohei, a purveyor of udon and soba noodle soups in Japan Village. They seem better than their 3.2 rating on Yelp in mid-August 2023 suggests. We ordered a Niku Udon (a beef noodle soup) for $13.78 ($15 with tax), with an add-on serving of chicken karaage (fried chicken) for $3.21 ($3.50 with tax), to go. The beef was thinly sliced, sweet, somewhat fatty, and a large portion. The broth had a meaty sweetness to it, but could benefit from more scallions. The udon noodles had a nice bounciness and chew to them. I like how Gohei and Japan Village displays post-tax prices on their menus, as this is the amount most people actually pay. Prices are displayed post-tax in Japan, too. While we took our order to go, it may be better to dine in, to experience the noodles and soup at their intended temperatures. We would definitely return for the Niku Udon, and to try other dishes.

Wow, the mentaiko creamy udon is out of this world. It's like if Japan discovered mac and cheese but elevated it to the 7th dimension. It's so flavorful, and there's a nice texture of the fish eggs. Really goes well with the udon. I wish more restaurants had this style of udon! This place is tucked away inside the Japan village building, so don't miss it! The portion doesn't look big , but honestly I'd probably die from cholesterol from how creamy it is if it was bigger.

    Cold udon with chicken karaage

Go to Japan village to shop and stop by this udon & soba restaurant at the food court. The udon and soba are homemade and are pretty good. However, the duck soba soup is a little bit too salty. Otherwise everything are good and quick if you don't have much time to eat. I see many people come to eat during lunch time. It's so lucky to eat some authentic udon and soba in Brooklyn when you can't travel to Japan.

    Mentaiko Cream Udon
    Linda T.

Of all the places in Japan Village food court, this is my favorite. There is one dish I've discovered that is my absolute favorite - the Mentaiko Cream Udon! I usually get that with a side of beef or Karaage (fried chicken). I've even compared the mentaiko cream udon to other places and this stands out as the best one I've had so far. It's such a simple dish, but tastes so unique and good, their udon is fresh and not too thick with the perfect texture. The beef can be a little oily, but tasty. And the Karaage was good, although I've had better, it's not the best. They have seating to the side that's reserved for this particular restaurant. Limited seats, but people don't stay too long. Price is not very cheap, and recently gone up, but still worth it in my opinion!

    Zaru udon (cold udon) $10
    Richard M.

I really wanted to give this place 4 stars because the zaru udon was really good and you can tell the udon was not some machine made dried noodle you can buy at the market next to this place. However at $10 for the portion I received and how long it took for me to get a simple zaru udon (3 people who ordered after me got their food first) I'm giving the place 3 stars. For $10 you should pile on the udon, after all there's basically nothing else: udon, chopped green onion, sauce (poured out of a bottle, I saw), and wasabi. Taste: 5/5 Wait time: 1/5 Value: 2/5

    Mushroom Cream Udon
    Ga Hing C.

Decided to try this place as it was right next to Ramen Setagaya, where I was getting food from. The pictures of the food caught my eyes and ended up ordering the mushroom cream udon for $12. First thing I noticed was how small the portion was. On top of that, the cream sauce was very bland. It really tasted like thick milk with some mushrooms mixed it. I don't think I'll give this place another try :(

I asked to sub rice for noodles because one of my kids is a rice pot (can't go without rice) and requested extra sauce, which they kindly provided. The set meals are a fantastic deal; a full size entree, an appetizer and a drink for $19-20. An extra order of noodles is $2.50 and it's really double the amount of noodles that comes in your entree. I also ordered their new dish with has abalone and sea cucumber; this is not part of a set meal. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has that umami sweetness that comes from a great soup base and the noodles are delicious as usual. The abalone was tender, the sea cucumber had a bite to it. There was fish maw and wood ear in there as well.

Barely any flavor. 5/10 The mala pork intestine soup noodle: I got the regular spiciness level and it was actually quite spicy. If you can't tolerate spicy food, try mild or medium first. The pork intestine is bit chewy. Otherwise the flavor is good. 8/10 The seafood tom yum soup noodle: mild tom yum flavor. The soup base is slightly on the sour side. Overall is good. 8/10 Thai style soup noodle: the soup flavor is good. Not too spicy. 9/10 We also tried the brown sugar rice cake: it's just ok. Not crunchy enough. The brown sugar is missing some caramelized flavor. So it is a sweet rice ball. 5/10 I think the temperature inside would be fine if you go during a cool day. When it's a hot day, the restaurant could get very hot even if they turn on both ACs. With just 2 ACs insides, and eating a hot bowl of spicy soup noodle, we were all sweating inside. Though the food is good, I would not return during summertime. It's just too hot to enjoy a good bowl of hot soup noodle.

We walked into a simple, fast casual setup that focuses more on the food than the atmosphere, with a clean, functional space designed for quick meals and takeout rather than lingering. The ordering counter is straightforward, and the staff moves efficiently, keeping the flow moving even during busy lunch periods. The hand pulled noodles are the biggest highlight, with thick, chewy strands that have a satisfying texture and hold onto the sauces well. We ordered a few different noodle dishes, and the flavors leaned bold with chili oil, spices, and savory seasonings that give the dishes their signature Shaanxi style profile. The stewed pork and beef options were both generous and filling, but the lamb dishes stood out with a strong cumin flavor that brought a deeper, more aromatic taste to the table. The lamb burger is another unique item, combining seasoned lamb with a crispy, handheld format that feels different from typical restaurant offerings. The noodles themselves are the main draw, but the lamb burger is worth adding to the order if you want to try something beyond the bowl. Service is quick and efficient, making it a convenient option for lunch or a casual dinner. Portions are generous for the price, and the menu has enough variety to try different dishes across multiple visits. The spice level can be adjusted, but many dishes naturally lean toward bold and spicy flavors, so keeping that in mind is worth it if you prefer milder food. Xi'an Famous Foods is a reliable spot for anyone craving hand pulled noodles and strong, flavorful Chinese dishes. The chewy noodles, cumin lamb, and unique menu items make it stand out from more traditional Chinese restaurants, especially for a quick meal that still feels distinctive and satisfying. It is not a place for a long, leisurely dinner, but for a fast, flavorful bowl of noodles that delivers on texture and spice, it hits the mark well.
