We were fortunate and lucky enough to make last minute reservations, and to even get a table in short notice! We had the New Years Eve tasting. It started off with a salad with a delicious ginger and sesame dressing. Then the seared Scottish King Salmon with its roe, avocado and shiso flowers, and the miso black cod for appetizers. Both fish appetizers were delicious, melts in the mouth. Then the main. Out of all six makis, we enjoyed the salmon, the fresh scallops, and the unagi - fresh water eel from Japan. Their otoro hand roll was really good. Their red miso soup had deep flavours, and their Miso panna cotta was delicious. The service was very good and very fri ndly, with constant tea and water refills and constant ginger refills. The ginger tasted like it was made in house, too. Overall. Food was ok. Table quite wobbly and I tested adjacent tables which were all quite wobbly. One of the nigiri pieces (striped jack I believe) was noticeably unpalatable which I was not sure if it was because the fish was not fresh or it was the natural taste of the fish. We ordered the house made cheesecake to share. We are usually not big dessert people but this was the tiniest slice of dessert I have ever seen at any restaurant, upscale or not. Bathroom was dark to hide the uncleanliness. There is a mandatory service charge at 23% which was pretty shameless. Christmas Eve prix fixe: modern take on traditional sushi course. The atmosphere was 'if I'm going to pay a lot for a Christmas Eve meal, then I want fish from Japan in a modern restaurant with great service'. My son added a roll off the regular menu, and we had good cocktails too. Many restaurants don't know the proper order to serve a Japanese meal, let alone which dishes are appropriate for a celebration. But not only was everything perfect, but the sake was exceptional. I was particularly impressed with the shishito pepper flavor infused into the akadashi soup, properly served at the end of the meal. OK, the dessert was quite clever too. read more

Sat at the bar with some friends on a weeknight. We got drinks at the speakeasy that is connected to this sushi place. We liked the ambiance of Sushi Sato and decided to move to the bar after our drinks. We shared a ceviche and a yuzu panna cotta dessert. Tuna in the ceviche tasted fresh and nice. I liked the choice to add edamame and corn in the ceviche, I don't see that too often. Beautiful presentation for both dishes. Did think it was pricey for what we got. I waffle between a 3.5 and 4 star, but given there are no halves, we'll go with 4. I thought the food and presentation was good. We had some flavorful nigiri, a couple of appetizers (seaweed salad and potstickers) and a few cut and hand rolls. They also gave us a free desert, because I think they knew we waited a while for our food and they forgot a few things. Dropped by Sushi Sato this past weekend to try their recently launched omakase menu and had an amazing time. The restaurant interior was simple, yet modern. We were greeted immediately upon entry and check-in for our reservation was easy and smooth. We were lucky enough to get the owner of the restaurant as our chef that night - we had a lovely time talking to him the entire night! The chef showcased his creativity, expertise, and passion for the craft in each course he put in front of us. We enjoyed the delicate, but bold flavors the garnishes brought with each bite. The amaebi and the uni handroll were my favorites - they both had outstanding quality, freshness, and flavor. The chef mentioned that fish was flown in daily from Japan, purchased straight from Toyosu market. The daily omakase menu changes based on the inventory that was purchased that morning in Japan. I definitely want to stop by again to try their a la carte menu. The owner of Sushi Sato also owns Jang, which has been at the top of my list of restaurants to try in SF - looking forward to eating there soon as well. Just a heads up, Sushi Sato is only for a la carte ordering. Within the restaurant there is an entrance to the omakase restaurant, which is a separate restaurant completely with a different reservation system. It was a little confusing since we saw people coming in and out of other entrances and felt a little bit like we were eating in the waiting area for the other restaurant. The menu overall seemed like it was inspired by Nobu-style Japanese fusion, with dishes like miso black cod. But they definitely made it their own. Overall a very creative and interesting dinner, though seasoning was sometimes too salty. Service was really attentive and we liked the sleek/modern interiors. We ordered: - pan seared scallops: good seasoning but I think I would have enjoyed more if completely cooked through - miso black cod- miso sauce on top was too strong/salty especially compared to the light dashi soup it was in - sushi tasting- very good quality fish but again some of the sashimi pieces were over seasoned - maki rolls- the rice is brown, but it is just white rice that has been pre-seasoned. Again good quality fish! Recommend the king salmon and toro. - Crab Risotto- my favorite! You can't go wrong with truffle flavor and creamy rice. I would come back for this dish! It was my one day off and I wanted to grab some sushi in the city so here I am. I sat at the bar and ordered a few cocktails. I got the melon drop and Kiwami. Both of these were pretty good if you like something on the sweeter side. The melon drop being the even sweeter one. For food, I ordered the sato signature roll and the fatty uni truffle bowl. Both of these were amazing! Was sad when it was gone lol. For the dessert, I got the yuzu panna cotta which was pretty solid. The service here was pretty good. I was seated at the bar and the bartender/server Tommy gave me good recommendations. He even gave me an angel wing sake on the house. The restaurant is nicely decorated. This place is perfect for a date night type of occasion. The parking situation is kinda sketchy. There is some street parking and there is a parking garage nearby. All in all, a great experience. All I have to say is WOW. Talk about a dining experience. One perk of mid-week dining is having plenty of space to stretch out. This was our first time dining at Sushi Sato, and it did not disappoint. + Albacore Crudo: Nothing unexpected from a restaurant of this caliber, and that's a good thing. The fish was fresh, and the flavor was even better. + Seared Scallops: Arguably my favorite dish. The roasted corn perfectly complemented the beautifully cooked scallops. + Crab Risotto: A standout for me. This dish was nearly perfect, but it could have been even better with the addition of mushrooms and mushroom stock. That would have taken it to umami heaven! + Toro Truffle Bowl: Objectively good, but not worth the price, in my opinion. I would have rather skipped this and ordered two more crab risottos. + Yuzu Panna Cotta: Good, but nothing special. I would skip dessert. I doubt people come here for that anyway. I'd also skip the cocktails based on my two experiences--both were a little too experimental and didn't quite hit the mark for me. Next time, I'll probably opt for whiskey or sake from their bar. We came here last night to celebrate two friends' birthdays and had high hopes based on the restaurant's website. We made a reservation for 20 people at 8:30 PM and were seated at two adjacent tables. We were especially looking forward to trying their Omakase experience, which was advertised online for under $100--a seemingly great deal. However, upon arrival, the Sato Signature tastings (Okonomi Tasting - $95 and Sato Tasting - $85) were not available. The only option close to what we expected was the Sushi Tasting (6 pieces) for $40. One of our tables opted for that and ordered a few additional dishes to share, including the Maguro Donburi, Negitoro, and Crab Miso Risotto. Not only were these portions tiny, but they were also significantly overpriced for what we received. An hour passed with no food. When our waiter finally approached with a tray, it was just soy sauce. We didn't receive our sushi tasting until nearly two hours later, at 10:13 PM. Unfortunately, the presentation and quality didn't live up to the price or our expectations. What was meant to be a celebratory evening turned into a frustrating experience due to the long wait, unavailable menu options, and underwhelming food. For the price and hype, this was deeply disappointing. I'd recommend checking out one of the many other sushi spots in San Francisco that offer better food and a smoother dining experience. read more

Also, it seemed like they didn't have enough ingredients and plating options when one compares what we received v the pictures from others on Yelp. My friend had such wonderful memories of eating at this place so I wanted to try it too. A big disappointment. Came to celebrate dad's bday with my parents. Service - A+. The whole staff made my 69 year old dad feel welcomed and celebrated. It was as if the entire staff knew. Chef Aiden was an amazing host who was friendly and shared fun stories of his culinary journey. Victor the som was incredibly gracious and attentive - and clearly a nerd level foodie in the most endearing way. Forgot the name of the man in the suit who also played host - he was so friendly and kind to my family all night. Ambience - A+. Simple, clean, modern. Value - A+. You absolutely get what you pay for in terms of portions and quality. Flavor - A. My fave was the chawanmushi, ceviche, poached lobster, and the Japanese ginger slices. This is now our default sushi restaurant, especially after our 7-year-old daughter declared it her favorite restaurant. We tried the sushi tasting along with a variety of sushi from the a la carte menu, and everything was exceptional, there wasn't a single piece that we didn't enjoy. As parents, we're often cautious about bringing our daughter to nice sushi restaurants, as many don't really cater to kids. But Alan and Yunus went above and beyond to make sure she felt welcomed and had a great experience. Alan even crafted a mocktail for her, which she absolutely loved. Sushi Sato is an elegant, fine dining restaurant located in Nob Hill. The interior is clean, modern, and very vibe-y. It's a great place to come for a date, special occasion, or with big groups. I have to give five stars for the impeccable service. Our waitress, Fiona, was so kind, explained the menu, gave great food suggestions, and made us feel taken care of! The food here was absolutely delicious. Fantastic quality of fish and the food was made with love and precision. I like how they used brown rice instead of white rice- it was a nice switch up that was nutty and had a more bite. Sashimi Tasting: akami, kamasu, salmon toro, kurodai, hamachi, kirasuzuki (extra). All of the fish were absolutely delicious. My standout favorites had to be the lean akami tuna, and salmon toro. These fish tasted delicious and luscious. The chef was also kind enough to give us an extra slice of an off the menu fish kirasuzuki which was also very delicious and fatty. Crab Miso Risotto: this was a luscious risotto with cream, miso, and a generous portion of crab. I was very impressed that the risotto was a soft texture despite the use of brown rice. Brown rice is normally more chewy than white rice but the chef was able to perfect a soft texture for the risotto. Yuzu Miso Black Cod: miso black cod that reminded me of the famous Nobu version. It was definitely a small piece of fish to split amongst the four of us, but the flesh was so tender, the light miso glaze was a great complement to the fish. We also loved the clams that came with it. Negi Toro Handroll: to finish the meal we all ended with a tuna handroll. We were delighted at how big the roll was and how generous the tuna serving was. This also came with brown rice and I loved the sesame soy sauce seasoning for the tuna. Overall this was a fantastic dining experience and I will definitely come back to try their $110 tasting menu. read more

We went with the sake and wine pairing, which went beautifully with the meal. The restaurant also features its own microbrewery. So, I had to sample the beer, and wasn't disappointed. The food was terrific but I was really disappointed by the service. We had to ask our server multiple times for the right menus and he did nothing to explain how the omakase experience worked vs the a la carte. Additionally, the food came out extremely slowly and even at one point our dish was sitting at the counter forgotten by the server. Only after we asked did he realize he forgot. The icing on the top was the 20% service charge (for a party of 2) despite the poor service. I'm giving this place two stars only because of our waiter, who was clearly overworked but stayed super apologetic and patient the whole time. We went last night because I wanted to try their $85 tasting menu, which sounded pretty good. We made a 6:30 pm reservation to give ourselves plenty of time before our 9:30 pm comedy show. When we got there, there was no host to greet us. Eventually, someone came and sat us, but I quickly realized that the same guy who seated us was also the only waiter serving about 10 parties in the restaurant. (Just to clarify, the place is split into two sections--Sushi Sato and Sato Omakase. For Sushi Sato, there was only one waiter and one sushi chef. The other staff seemed to be handling the Sato Omakase side.) We waited 20 minutes before anyone even took our order. I tried to be patient because I could see the waiter running around nonstop trying to keep up. When he finally took our order, they told us they couldn't do the tasting menu--even though it was on the menu! Thankfully, the waiter asked the sushi chef, and they were able to make it happen for us. At 6:55 pm, we finally got our drinks. The first course showed up at 7:12 pm, but the first five pieces of nigiri didn't come until 7:39 pm. By then, we'd been sitting for over an hour and had only gotten our drinks and the first course. To make up for the wait, the waiter brought us an eggplant appetizer for free, which was a nice gesture. At 8:15 pm, we got the chawanmushi, and later he brought us some potato croquettes as another free appetizer to apologize again. The second set of five nigiri didn't come out until 8:44 pm!! I've had omakase meals that last around two hours, but for the amount of food we got in this restaurant, the wait was just ridiculous. I felt bad for the waiter since he was doing everything he could, but the management really needs to step up. It's a Saturday night--you should have enough staff so your customers aren't waiting an hour just to get started. I even saw another group leave because they got tired of waiting. What really annoyed me, though, was the sushi chef. There were two women at the chef's table, and he was chatting with them nonstop and showing off while one of them kept filming him. I don't know if she was an influencer or what, but their meal was already done, and he was still hanging out with them instead of making our food. I honestly wanted to go up there and tell him to stop messing around and make our nigiris already!! Overall, it was a pretty frustrating experience. The automatic 20% service fee felt like a lot given the service, but we still tipped extra because our waiter was working so hard. As nice as he was, the poor management and ridiculous wait times made the whole night kind of a disaster. read more

The omakase menu was $195 pp which is on the pricier side in terms of number of courses and size of fish compared to other places like Kusakabe, but I liked that most types of fish catered to my preferences. If you love uni, scallop, salmon, toro like me - you'll be eating a lot of that here! I also appreciated that our chef and servers were attentive and patiently waited between conversations before presenting us with each course. A dear friend was visiting from Paris, where there are very few good sushi restaurants. On the basis of its Yelp reviews, we decided to go to Sushi Sato. This was at 9:20 on a Saturday night. We were both very well-dressed and well-mannered (I've been to Japan many times and know how to behave in public). The sign said they're open until 10. We could see that there were still 3 tables active. I went to open the door but the hostess hurried over and took the handle, opening it just a foot or so, and planting her head in the middle of the doorway. "I'm sorry; we're closed" she said. "The sign says that you're open until 10." "Yes, but sorry -- we're closed." If this had happened in Japan, I would've apologized and left, since Japanese etiquette demands that. But this is the US, where businesses are expected to abide by what their signs say (barring emergencies, and so on). Clearly that wasn't the case here. More likely, the staff wanted to get off work sooner, rather than accommodating customers who might still be in the restaurant until maybe 10:30. Note to Sushi Sato: in the US, when your sign says that you are open until 10, that means you are expected to accept customers coming in your door until 10. Not 9:19. I will never try coming to Sushi Sato again. This city is full of sushi restaurants to choose from and I will chose among those who treat their would-be customers with more respect. read more
