I was attending an event at the Angelika and arrived early to grab a quick bite. I spotted Sushi Mocki and there was a spot at the bar, so I popped in. A young gentlemen greeted me when I arrived and gave me a thumbs up when I motioned to the bar. There were already menus on the counter so I began to peruse. The gentlemen behind the bar was friendly, but it was unclear if he was going to be taking me order or not as he was making conversation and then chatted up the Londoner employees who sat next to me. I finally asked if I could have some water and order. He jumped behind the register to enter my order. I had ordered an iced tea and was in the middle of ordering my roll when his eyes went to the front door and followed a sweaty young women fresh from bar or yoga (or whatever) as she walked to the bar. I started to continue my order when the girl came to stand right beside me and stated her order. He literally stopped taking my order, got out a paper and pen and took her order. I was shocked! He engaged her in a brief conversation while I sat there looking from him to her. After 2 min or so he looked back over at me, got behind the register and said, "I got distracted, what were you ordering?" No joke! I finished my order, still shocked. When my roll, the Lovers Roll (Crab meat, avocado, cucumber inside, topped with spicy seared salmon, scallion, spicy mayo, unagi sauce.) arrived it looked and smelled delicious! I was starving and dug in. The toast on it was perfect, the flavors were wonderful and the portion was hearty. If I had more time before my event I would have ordered another roll. Went to big D to try some prime rib. That was slated for Sunday brunch so what shall we do about Saturday lunch? We did some shopping and ended up at Sushi Mocki. Not my GF's favorite cuisine, but she found a noodle dish that met her approval. There is zero chance I could name every roll that hit the table. We literally ordered half the damn menu. When we thought there wasn't anything left more food showed up! I can however touch on appetizers; we kinda went wild there too. Good but foodservice grade dumplings. Shrimp Panko were perfectly fried and paired well with the dipping sauce. Favorite bites were the Beef Tataki with Ponzu and Sriracha. Runner up was the Hamachi with thinly sliced Serrano peppers. Main reason for the 4 star nod was the service. This dude never let our drinks run dry and busted his rump bringing plate after plate after plate. Probably the most sushi I've consumed in years. THE STAFF IS AMAZING! I want to start this review with that highlight because everyone working during our visit was very friendly, accommodating, and quick to provide recommendations. If this was a service only review, it would be 5 stars. Unfortunately, the other aspects were not as positive. To begin, upon entering, the restaurant had a notable cleaning product and old fish scent. Usually, I would leave immediately, but being on a time constraint, I decided to stick around. We ordered a cucumber martini, old fashion, edamame, miso soup, and a few sushi rolls. To begin, the cucumber martini was strong but honestly could've easily been replicated elsewhere as there was nothing special, and the old fashion tasted cheap in addition to having a maraschino cherry as opposed to the typical black cocktail cherries. Onto food, the miso soup was bland and the edamame were soggy as if microwaved. In transparency, I usually would list out which sushi rolls we got, but in this instance, I feel all the sushi rolls were similar enough in execution that the detail of "which roll it was" is irrelevant. All of the rolls were overly sauced and resembled "okay" quality buffet sushi. For ~$100 tab, I definitely expected better quality and options. All in all, I do not plan to return, but I really hope ownership can increase the quality in order to benefit both the patrons and the employees. read more

Came for dinner, starving. Super slow to bring anything out. My husband got his food. 10 mins goes by and no sign of my food. Server finally comes over and says my food was made wrong so they are remaking it. Another 15 mins goes by. At this point my husband is done with his food. They finally bring my food and it's still wrong. I had asked for no Sriracha because im allergic and you could visibly see signs of it. They put it on there then tried wiping it off. Really wanted to love this place since it's a stones throw from the house. Unfortunately, the sushi is very average BUT the staff and hospitality are amazing. I came for lunch with a lunch date and we got the gyoza to start. We also got the SMU roll, some salmon sashimi, and the big time roll. Everything was pretty underwhelming. The specialty rolls were over done with spicy mayo and creaminess. I get that some of these should have that but it was just over the top. The sashimi quality was more of what you'd see at a grocery story than at a restaurant. Which is totally fine as long as you know what you are getting. The highlight for me was the big time roll. Super cool presentation and tasty. Still over creamed with the spicy mayo but it seemed like there was some fish in there somewhere! The host was a super warm, welcoming, nice gentleman. It's located just below the Angelika Theatre so it's a cool place to check out before or after a show. Really great sushi spot with lots of options. It has a long list of appetizers and wide variety of rolls. The salmon boat was just salmon sashimi with crab mix inside with a quail egg yolk on top. Pretty tasty for simple bite, the yolk provides a lovely creaminess that makes it taste luscious. The white tuna nigiri was sliced thick and was very hardy. The smu roll was flavourful and had a good mix of toppings with a nice crunch from the tempura flakes. It tasted very fresh and well prepared. The dallas roll was a bit of an odd ball. It reads on the menu like an elevated Rainbow roll. Instead, it's kind of a mixed fish salad with no sauce or anything. It made for an interesting texture i like, but my wife did not. The rolls we got were uptown and lovers roll. Highly recommend the lover rolls, it was amazing! The uptown was good as well. The shrimp tempura was alright. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. I needed a gluten-free meal and they were more than accommodating, making the chicken teppanyaki bowl with tamari instead of soy sauce.
