We had been out selling Girl Scout cookies and were cold and exhausted. We saw Sushi Island and were excited. We wanted sushi and it seemed to just be the place to hit the spot. They welcomed us right in, my daughter and I were stoked. We sat at the delicious array of sushi dolling along on the conveyor belt before us and were so happy. The waitress came right over, we told her we wanted water and she said we could just start eating. We had just selected our first plates sushi when a waft of cigarette smoke blasted in our face. That was completely off putting and unappetizing. I called the waitress over to ask what could be done. She said she would investigate and came back to say she was sorry but the cooks were smoking. I suggested they shut the door. She went back and we grabbed a few more sushi plates. The sushi was fresh and delicious. I had wonderful pieces of Salmon and my daughter had a delicious shrimp tempura Roll. However, the cigarette smoke came right into our faces again. At that point I was done. I called the waitress over and said we cannot sit and eat with the cigarette smoke continuing to blow in our faces and over our food. It was extremely unappetizing and just disgusting. To their credit, they did not ask us to pay. I had to stop at burrito boy to get my daughter dinner on the way home. What arrived didn't look anything like the picture in the menu, nor any resemblance to any rainbow roll I've ever had before, and I've been eating sushi since the early 1980's. I might have given this place three stars, as it's just another two or three star conveyor belt sushi joint. I've given it one star, though, because when I arrived at 8:50 they began mopping and dousing everything in some awful chemical cleaner. They close at 9:30. I could barely eat. I never cared much for the services but it's not a crucial part to the dining experience. This would have been a 3-star review, but the service I got from the last visit took a star away. We walked in at 3:45 pm and was sat immediately, a server came up to my boyfriend and simply stated "No more happy hour" before walking off. What? Happy hour is 2-4 pm. Spectacularly bad. I see that I was wrong in naming Duck Sushi worst in town, because Sushi Island is even worse. Pros: Literally none. Free parking perhaps. Cons: - The atmosphere: Like sitting at a table facing complete strangers, with all parties awkwardly trying not to look at each other or listen to each other's conversation. And when I say "at a table", I mean "at a rotating trough". I felt very uncomfortable and couldn't wait to leave. And that was -before- I found out how awful the food was. - The price: Supposedly it was Happy Hour, but since we paid after 4pm, we were charged full price. Didn't prevent us from getting the crappy happy hour line-up of only four kinds of sushi on the belt. Only as we were getting the check, after happy hour, did we suddenly see a few new things come out. - The selection: There were about three dozen types of sushi on the menu listed under "sushi belt selection", yet only four rotated during the entire time we were there: California rolls, california rolls with mango and salmon on top, salmon and cream cheese rolls, and salmon rolls with some crunchy stuff and sauce on top. That was it. Not a single other thing came by the entire time until we had already asked for the check, when happy hour was over and they could put their real sushi out. - The rolls: Not much variation, and they were all way too sweet. Cheap mayonnaise? Gross. Even most grocery store sushi is better than this. - The Escolar: I saw that they have escolar, which is my personal measure for how good a sushi restaurant is, but there was none on the belt. I asked the waitress, and she said "oh, that's never on the belt". So why is on the menu under "sushi belt selection"?! Anyway, when it came out I wished I hadn't ordered it. It was brownish beige. YUK. I've eaten escolar at all kinds of places, and bought it at Uwajimaya as well for preparing at home, and it has -always- been a bright, creamy white, sometimes a little toward pinkish, but never this weird color.. I have no idea what they did to it or how old it was. I ate it because I felt like I should at least try it, but it wasn't very fresh tasting. I should've just sent it back and asked for my money back, but I never saw the waitress again. - Unagi-don: By FAR the worst unagi we have -ever- tried. We make it home, eat it at lots of restaurants, but never have we seen unagi this bad. Dry, crusty, disgustingly overcooked, bones in it. Eww. - The service: Saw the waitress when we placed our order, at which time I told her I might want to order more later. Saw her again when she delivered our first order, and then never again. Wasn't able to order more, what she brought us was barely even edible, and there wasn't much on the belt. We didn't come here for happy hour, we just came for a late lunch. We ended up getting a shitty selection of only 4 kinds of sushi, and no opportunities to order more after our initial request. Ate here Friday afternoon, a little after 2 p.m. From 2 to 4 p.m., all the food on the conveyor belt is only $1.75 each. Now, this isn't some elegant, exotic, super duper seafood sushi bar. This is a nice, clean, modernistic sushi bar. This is more of a common man's/woman's, university students sushi bar. At about 2:30 the restaurant got very busy and I'm sure it's because of happy hour. As far as the food goes, I thought generally it was very good with some of the items being excellent. For the price, it was excellent. They have a wide variety of items. And yes, some of the items I saw go round and round and round, but I didn't pick those. There is a server that can assist you and there is a regular menu that you can order items from and booths that you can sit down at. All the servers were really friendly and helpful. The Cook's looked grumpy, but that's pretty par for the course in any restaurant :-). I will definitely be going back again for their happy hour, and if you like sushi I would definitely give it a try. The concept of the individual orders going around on a conveyor belt doesn't sound appealing but it really does work as the product rotates out nicely with all the people. Great experience, they use a conveyer belt and you can pick off whatever you want. If the belt doesn't have what you want, you can order items or speciality things. The plates are very cheap and they even have a 'happy hour' where it can be upwards to about 50% off which that makes the place the cheapest but still quality sushi anywhere in town or even probably the entire state. It is notable though that albeit the happy hour is cheaper, you're selection is minimal compared to most normal hours as there's way more people there and the best stuff goes super fast. I stop in quite consistently when I'm passing by as it's nice to be able to just pop in, grab a snack and pop out really fast when you're busy as the stuff on the belt is already ready to go. My boyfriend and I came into Sushi Island pretty often, as we really enjoy sushi. Very recently, we went in during happy hour and were completely thrown off by our experience. Right off the bat, it was busy, but my boyfriend and I got seated right away. As usual, waters were brought over to us. As I grabbed a plate off the conveyor belt, we also wanted to order something off the menu. After that first encounter with the waitress, we had not seen her for another 10-15 minutes or so. It took a while for us to order other food. We finally got to order order a beef teriyaki and chicken teriyaki bowl, and once we got our food, it was pretty disappointing. My chicken was not cooked and was really chewy. I could not even finish the bowl. My boyfriend usually eats my leftovers and not even he wanted to finish the chicken. In regards to the waitresses, they were extremely rude. Reaching over customers, not saying excuse me, walking off without a nice mannerism. When paying, one of the waitresses (older woman with short hair) acted as if we were bothering her. She ran my boyfriend's card and, without saying anything or even looking at him, she handed him his card back. Kept her head down the entire time. When we left, she also did not say anything either. I really like Sushi Island. They're affordable, tasty, and insanely convenient. Their choices are great. They have an awesome Cucumber Salad that is normally marinated dressed just perfectly! Out of the limited number of signature rolls I've tried here, my favorite is by-far the Dragon Roll. It's perfect and executed so every single time I order it. Honestly, the only thing I have against this place takes a star away, and it's an important one: the hot tea. I am not a huge sushi fan- and am leery of trying new sushi places since I've tried some nasty sushi. My fiancé comes here often, and wanted to go so I went with him. I ordered tempura shrimp and veggies from the appetizer menu. He got sushi from the sushi belt. I tried his California roll and regretted ordering the tempura. It was super good. For me, it tasted fresh, the balance if ingredients was right, and the temperature was good. I then tried his tempura California roll, also delicious. When I got my tempura veggies, I was even more disappointed- one asparagus, potato, sweet potato and ???. When I've ordered tempura other places, there is typically some broccoli too- I'm not a huge fan of tempura fried potatoes. The tempura was just ok- it would have been better with more asparagus or broccoli. But, I wouldn't order it again either way. Next time, I'm going with the sushi, so I don't have to take pieces of my fiancé's plate. It was tasty, and even at regular price, not a bad price. If I didn't order the tempura, and if the seating wouldn't be so awkward with more people in the venue, id give this 5 stars. For now- 4. But I'll definitely be back! read more

I love the concept of conveyer belt sushi, because you can literally start eating as soon as you sit down. Great for if you have a short lunch break. Come during Happy Hour and each plate is only $1.50! Their 11th Avenue location goes from 2-4 p.m. and downtown location goes from 5-7 p.m. so you've got some options. Every other time I have been here, this place is great... But not today. I requested fresh spring rolls during a dead lull in happy hour and attempted to enjoy some salmon sushi. The salmon sushi was room temp and mushy, which is not a usual thing for this place. The "chef" microwaved some cold spring rolls off of the conveyer belt and handed me still cold microwaved spring rolls stating that they were fresh. I touched them and they were still cool to the touch. The "chef" then grabbed the rolls with his hand that I had already touched and heated them more in the microwave and attempted to serve me soggy microwaved spring rolls. I really enjoy Sushi Island, in fact, I come here at least once per week to eat dinner. Although I do not eat fish (I know, why go to a sushi restaurant?) I find there are several tasty vegetarian dishes to choose from. Suggestions: Asparagus roll (yum), avocado roll, Inari, fried veggies, sesame balls (extra yum!) and edamame. As for the service, I have never had bad service. My only suggestion is that I wish Sushi Island served ashigashiya tofu, for the vegetarians that would like to go to sushi with their friends. :) read more

Despite the lack of a lap/wave/tread/kiddie pool, I will be definitely be returning. However, imagine how great it would be to tread water around a sushi belt. This is my go-to sushi restaurant in town. Their sushi belt prices are always reasonable and they have a great variety, but I always try to go during their happy hour. You definitely have to get there right when happy hour starts if you don't want to wait for a seat, because it fills up very quickly. I am always impressed by happy hour because they keep producing a great variety of rolls and nigiri, instead of just making lots of their cheapest dishes. While the decor isn't mind-blowing, it's tastefully done, and the restaurant is always very clean. A great option for fast and tasty inexpensive sushi. read more

I'm rating this based on what it is, they aren't trying to fool anyone, it's a sushi-train, folks. Balance your expectations. Sushi trains are for fast sushi. Yes they need to be clean and well functioning of course, a good selection is always a plus. Sushi Island gets the 5 out of 5 for sushi-belts because it hits all points nicely. The selection is actually better than I'd usually expect at a train. I love the set up. Some places have it so that the chefs are the middle and it feels cramped sometimes. This is not set up like that. It's sort of set up like a U instead of an O. It's a nice arrangement. The seats are nice and comfy, the place is well maintained. The sushi isn't the best cuts of fish, why would they be, it's a sushi train. It's cheap because it's a simple procedure and mass produced. I was able to spend a 30 minute lunch, eating at my own pace and walked out with a tab about the same price as if you went to a diner. Whereas if you go to a higher end sushi bar you'd pay twice that and it would take much longer. You shave off some quality for convenience. If you want great sushi, go to Mame for dinner. If you want a quick, satisfying lunch, Sushi Island is good times. read more

This is my husband and I's favorite place to get Sushi in Eugene. It's a clean place, the waitresses are usually always nice, and the sushi is absolutely delicious!!!! Make sure you go during happy hour though (mon-sun 2-4pm) Our personal favorites and must haves anytime we go here are: Monster Rolls!!! (These are my FAVORITE!!!) Be sure and ask the cooks to make you fresh monster rolls and have them put them on the belt so that they are cheaper (but it has to be happy hour to get the cheaper price) Also their California rolls are too die for. First off I will say I typically do not eat much sashimi, I don't mind it, but I just prefer my food cooked. With that said I can not believe this place is 2.5 stars! Happy hour from 2-4 (everyday) is absolutely amazing, every plate is 1.50 on the sushi belt. Around 4 pieces per. I arrived right at 2 and by 2:20 is was packed. Everything was great, minus the calamari was a little overcooked. An abundance of soy sauce, wasabi, teriyaki, and a flavored mayo(?) were around the seats. My wife and I left absolutely stuffed for 21$ which I find hard to do most places in Eug eating sushi. (bring the sweatpants) I read below some people complained of the service. I had zero issues and was actually quite happy with the waiters, they were very helpful and quick to refill my drink. The good: The conveyor-belt setup was a welcome surprise. While waiting for my cooked dish, I stared longingly at what looked like a nice selection of well priced offerings. Edamame, various sushi, it looked good. Unfortunately, I came in with a very specific meal in mind and that's what led to eventual disappointment. The bad: My Katsu chicken was overcooked and took _34_ minutes to arrive. I can't even think it was the size of the crowd because I arrived well in advance of the lunch rush and the place was almost empty. I believe the server (a woman with a color streak in her hair) lied to me when I asked for a status at the 20 minute mark. She went in back, I saw her handle a ticket, then she came out and told me they were plating it 'right now'. It was 10 more minutes before the dish actually arrived and the woman who cashed me out told me they had actually lost my ticket. I am frustrated that I was lied to. Mistakes happen (lost tickets are usually no big deal) but to be lied to about it makes me feel like a chump. I would have tried again likely but I feel so frustrated at being deceived that I don't believe I will. read more

Sushi Island is easily located on West 11th by the Fred Meyer with ample parking. It has been mentioned in several comments already, but it bears repeating that from 2-4 on any day, including weekends, you can feast on any plate from the sushi belt for $1.50 per plate. What has NOT been said, is that you can *also* order from the regular menu, or make special requests at any time. Yes- you will pay regular price, but for those complaining about the variety this may well be a fair compromise. Of course they do a ton of different rolls such as California Roll or Spicy Tuna Roll during Happy Hour. I have also seen many other varieties. Regular prices on sushi are average for the area. Buy 5 plates get the 6th free, I have never been told that I had to purchase Miso and a drink, in fact they also print coupons in the Savvy Saver that do not state additional purchase required. I have been told this coupon does not apply during Happy Hour. Much has been noted about the customer service. Think of it as fast food and not fine Japanese dining to gain some perspective. These ladies work hard cleaning and resetting places, in addition to juggling orders with no table numbers and their regular cleaning duties at minimum wage plus splitting any tips. It is usual to have to remind a server about a special order- particularly since they switch positions frequently. I have never had anyone be particularly brusque with me, I have been told that we arrived 5 minutes too early and if we touched anything off of the belt before 2 p.m., we would be charged full price for the item, which was a *little* over-the-top. My daughter and I timed the sushi as coming around every 5 minutes. There are actually 4 separate belts, not one big one. Patrons are welcome to get up and walk around to find what you are looking for (though it's never appreciated to reach over someone's shoulder to snatch what they were reaching for.) Bento boxes are reasonably priced. When we ordered, the chicken katsu was overcooked, which seems to be a recurring theme. The tempura veggies were perfect and delicious, however. My daughter particularly enjoys the miso soup, which is always rich and dense. Seating is rarely awkward if you're used to cafeterias. Saddle up where there's room, try not to knock anyone with your elbows and get your wasabi on! read more

After further review it turns out I go back often! This place has a GREAT happy hour. All plates are $1.50 between 2-4 every day. As long as you're there before 4pm they still give you happy hour prices! Awesome. The sushi is very consistent, always get great product and pretty good service.
