I went to their newer location - where Yo Sushi used to be. I am assuming food and service is same across the board. I went in for take out on Monday night after work. I was greeted by the hostess almost immediately. Super friendly staff, and very helpful imo. Since I went in for take out, I can't say how their dine in service is. Pricing is fair, it seems pretty standard with some of the other sushi joints in the area. Portions were filling, just right, with some room left over for some desert. I ordered the California Roll combo. It came with 6 pcs of California roll and 4 pc nigri. As for Nigri you normally get 2 Tuna and 2 Salmon, but at Sushi Giwa I got 1 ebi, 1 tuna, 1 salmon and 1 fish I couldn't identify. It looks like a nigri that you'd get in a fancier combo. Wait time for my food to be prepared didn't take long. I think I was out the door before my cup of tea cooled down enough to be drank. read more

Occupying the former Domenico's Pizza. Newly opened as a sushi restaurant. Interior has been renovated nicely. Reasonable prices, Korean owned and definitely not trying to hide the fact as they serve some Korean dishes. Sashimi wasn't palm sized as described by another reviewer, looked like it was cut with a knife not quite sharp enough as the bottom looked as though it has been ripped a bit. Rolls and appys pretty standard, better than Sushi Garden Lougheed. A lot of special rolls normally associated with Korean Sushi restaurants. Decent prices, service a bit slow and inattentive but willing to chalk it up to growing pains, definitely worth a trip back. read more

This place is fantastic. I've been here about half a dozen times over the months. I've never not liked something I've ordered here. Their sushi is best described as experimental, as they use certain things sushi isn't typically known for. However it is all so delicious! I don't think this is the place if you're looking for traditional, classic sushi. But if you're seeking to try something new and modernized, I highly recommend this place. The service has been great every time. The waitresses are always friendly and the food reaches us fairly quickly. The chef even prepared us a free appetizer upon our last visit to show his appreciation of our frequent visiting. Sure it was a simple avocado nigiri, however it is little gestures like that which make me truly respect restaurants such as this one. They also have an alternate menu for Korean dishes which is awesome if you like variety. I tried a few of the items, and they're all delicious. My favourite one is the Japchae. The atmosphere is nice; it is always very warm and cozy. They also have this humongous cherry blossom tree in the centre of the dining area which is very inviting when you walk in. There are a few negative reviews inquiring the sashimi. I've yet to try it, so I can't confirm or deny. But my friend ordered it and she said it was great. The service is horrible. I had a date and I waited over 45 minutes to get my food. I asked for the manager he/she never showed up. After complaining over and over again finally our food arrived and another disaster. We asked for one thing we got something else. I had to ask for the bill and wait another 12 minutes to get it. A and I were carpooling today and she talked me into food after work, so I brought her to Sushi Giwa since it's kinda on the way home. Located on Hastings Street in Burnaby, they have a couple parking stalls in the parking lot and a bus stop in front, making it easily accessible. I saw they had uni nigiri ($2.50) so I ordered one and was so happy with it. Usually it's the larger uni but they served the tiny ones and it was so fresh. The sweet buttery taste of uni exploded in my mouth--pretty great for under $3! I also ordered a couple rolls, all California roll-based. They had actually messed up my order and offered to change it after apologizing profusely, but why waste perfectly good food? So they gave me extra tempura bits to put on top of my Spicy Salmon Roll ($3.85) [I ordered a Spicy SUN Roll, but they misheard] and it was really good. Great chunks of salmon in the roll without being overwhelmingly saucy. I really liked the Mango Paradise Roll ($11), sweet mango paired with a citrus mayo and smoke salmon on top of a California roll, it was nice and refreshing! Finally I also had a Dragon Roll ($9.55), with unagi on top. Kinda boring compared to the other rolls but the eel was moist and flakey, not too no either, very enjoyable. Service was friendly and attentive, I did notice an increase in prices since last year though (I guess inflation DOES happen), but food was fresh and good quality! read more

From the greeting when you first walk in the door until the thanks when you leave they really put an effort into making you feel comfortable and valued as a customer. As others have commented the interior décor is very nice and comfortable. The kitchen is open and you can watch the chefs at work. I am not a very adventurous eater (I avoid the huge fish roe, octopus, etc) but there are so many excellent choices for me at Giwa in addition to all the others. By far my favourite is the Giwa House Roll - a group of rolls covered with vegetable, cheese, sauces, and lightly barbequed salmon and tuna. It is just incredible, and so delicious, and unlike anything I have had at the other restaurants! The slight char to the fish, the melted cheese, it just all comes together. I also really like their spicy agadashi tofu, which doesn't just fall all apart like so many others, and has a sweeter take on the usual spicy sauce. The nigiri sushi is large and tender, with a perfect amount of rice underneath, and they have some really fun and interesting maki options - check out the menu! The sushi is excellently priced for the value, and our children also enjoy the food and the tea, and are comfortable in the restaurant. It isn't as loud and crammed full as some other restaurants, and you have more than enough room to be comfortable. One of the chefs (who I now know as B.J.) crafted a special treat for our children that was a real delight, and totally made our night! This is our new sure-thing for sushi! I've had good previous experiences at this place but the last time I went back, the server was rude and disruptive. She made a mistake on our order and my boyfriend asked if it was okay to get the order fixed and apologized for the inconvenience to which she rolled her eyes to. She followed up by complaining loudly and swearing to her fellow coworkers in Korean ( I can speak Korean). I was 100% not impressed. It is a very easy fix, just switch it from yam tempura to a roll but she felt the need to come back and let us know that we made a mistake and not her. She said it not one but twice. Let's say we did make the mistake (although I 100% know he said roll considering we are regulars here and he orders the same thing every time), the eye rolling was completely unnecessary and just rude. Happy to see another restaurant addition to North Burnaby! Nice and cozy decor, friendly staff, friendly price, good sushi. They also have some Korean dishes such as seafood pancake and sweet sour pork etc. cheaper than in most other Korean restaurants. Prawn tempera coating was a little loose, they fall apart as you pick them up. The bench edge is a little too harsh on the butt/legs, you get huge pressing marks on the thighs (I have short legs...) Absolutely did not have a good meal tonight. I ordered the dinner box A which took 45 minutes to be served. By the time my meal came the chicken teriyaki and rice were cold, the tuna sashimi was watery and the prawn in the tempura was soggy. I could not finish the chicken karage and asked for a box to take it home. Again I waited and when I went up to the front counter to pick my leftovers, the waitress told me she threw it away by mistake and offered to have the kitchen fry 2 pieces for me. HUGE Disappointment!!!! Ordered Nagasaki Spicy Ramen which states (with veggies) and received ramen with a tiny bit of seafood and lots of beef that wasn't mentioned. The waiter offered to replace it but we had to be somewhere so ate the soup which was flavourless. Then ordered a Godzilla roll and a Gangster Chef Roll. The Gangster Chef Roll arrived with Godzilla BITE which we didn't order. Since we were trying something new, we didn't know it was different than what we ordered until the bill arrived and the price was $14.95. The girl was also going to bring another soup which we also didn't order but I corrected her and she crossed it off the sheet. When the waiter came, we told him of her mixups. Any other restaurant would have taken an item off of the menu or gave a gift card for the next meal. Horrible, horrible service! We used to really like this place and told many of our friends to go. I give this place a 3.5 stars because of the atmosphere, service and some of the food. The specialty rolls I give a 5 star for. I was here for an early dinner one night and I remember the location to be a sushi place but not with that name. But all in all it's still a sushi restaurant run by Koreans I believe. Their menu includes a few Korean dishes which was pretty cool. They have your normal sushi and a sheet full of their specialty rolls. We tried out the Philadelphia roll and the Kamikaze roll. The Philadelphia roll I have to say is very cheesy because it does come with cream cheese. So, if you're not a fan of that then I suggest you to get something else. The Kamikaze roll is like a house roll (or dynamite roll. Not exactly sure) with spicy salmon and tuna salad. To me that's like the best of both worlds. This is one roll where I would come back for. We also had chicken karage, ebi sunomono and tuna tataki. There was something about the tuna tataki that I felt was missing. So, it wasn't as good as I expect it to be. The ebi sunomono wasn't exactly well mixed where the shrimp had no taste but water. Chicken karage was literally just deep fried chicken wings. So, those 3 dishes were kinda disappointing. Service was average. The servers all speak a decent amount of english even though they look like international students from korea. It's a pretty big restaurant but sad part that by 7pm the restaurant is only about 1/4 full on a week night. I don't blame them when there is another sushi place right next to them and Antons on the other side. We came in because we were hungry and Antons was like a half an hour wait. Overall, I suggest you all to come try out their specialty rolls and skip the rest because it's pretty meh. Though I didn't get a chance to try out the korean dishes so i can't say much about that. Made a reservation here on a Friday evening with my family for 6:30pm. A few people were running late about 10 minutes late and the waitress there did not show any patience for our table. She asked if everyone was here and when I replied that we were waiting for two more she went on on a long rant about how we were holding up other reservations. Now, I've been to Sushi Giwa before and had a lovely experience (when they first opened), but after this experience I would not return. This one waitress single-handedly turned a family celebration into a sour event - she kept messing up our order, made it seem like we were the wrongdoers, and avoided us for the whole time we were there. Not only did this delay our dinner because they had to constantly go back to the kitchen to change things, but our food was staggered so everyone was eating at different times. (If they had repeated our orders to us in the first place, we would've been out of there much faster and wouldn't have "held up the other reservations after us.") Quite disappointed with the service here, but to be honest the food isn't too bad. If you're looking for cheap eats this is the place for you. If you're looking for good service, I'd try another. read more

Used to be my favourite sushi place in Burnaby, but now after getting new ownership this food and its quality is absolutely disgusting. As well they raised their prices..... but the food quality has gone way down... cause that makes sense? They also fail to mention changes to the menu and rudely blame it on you when you're not satisfied after they've made mistakes on your order. Good quality sushi and there are also Korean options if you like to mix it up a little. The Japanese fare is quite standard and you won't find much beyond the usual sushi restaurant options. Their tuna gomae is certainly different: normally I expect a spinach bundle with sesame sauce on top and tuna sashimi, but here it's more like a house salad with tuna sashimi. Not unpleasant but I do like the kind of spinach you get at almost every other place. Prices are reasonable and about what one would expect; it's not cheap nor is it expensive. I'd give this place a solid 4 stars except that it has a definite chemical smell from whatever they use to clean the tables. I've never experienced this at any other restaurant and it's potent enough that it detracts from an otherwise pleasant meal. While I applaud their attention to cleanliness, they could certainly achieve the same with a much less irritating cleaner. read more

One of the best sushi places I have visited in the lower mainland so far. My wife and I made the trip from Poco and were not disappointed. My local sushi restaurant got new management (it's so sad, they have a sign up on the entrance that says "New management" as if it is some kind of special promotion) which decided to bring up the prices of everything, without changing anything but covering up the ripped leather couches with ugly purple blankets. Bringing up prices while at the same time improving nothing on the menu is the best way to loose your long time customers. Thanks I'll just go to the sushi place down the street. 16 dollars for the same dish Ive been ordering for 9...screw you guys, plus your new waiters are untrained and have no idea what they are doing. The dishes are still exactly the same, the chefs are the same, everything is still exactly the same, just 80% more expensive...what is it that I am paying more for? Once again, screw this place. This is the worst sushi place I've been. We tried to make a call for reservation before we arrived. Nobody picked up the phone call after 2 rings. Its voicemail was already full. So we decided to drive there and see if busy. It was only 20% full inside the restaurant. Obviously the staff did not take calls and let it go to voicemail. So we were arranged to be seated at a corner table. Their menu has lots of typo. Canucks as Canuks, Mountain as Mauntain... Waitresses seem to be disappeared. Even you waved them to take order, they tried to ignore you and hide at the back. We were given tiny pieces sashimi and not as fresh as other sushi places. We ordered caterpillar roll (avocado, eel, cucumber). It was tiny and worse than ever. Everything is way more expensive than other places but food quality is damn bad so as poor service. They do have lots of take out orders thru skip the dishes. Not sure if take-out is the main support to get this place survived. read more

This used to be our favourite sushi place and we have had many positive experiences there. But that stopped 3-4 weeks ago. The last 3 times our experiences have been very disappointing. The giant spicy tuna rolls are neither giant nor spicy any longer (and now more expensive to boot). Once we could even taste that the tuna was on the verge of going off (too little spicy sauce to disguise the true flavour). The final time we were there, the giant roll was small again with lots of rice and very little tuna and now our unagi roll tasted like wet dog. We had to send the unagi back and the reply was that they had served it that morning and things were fine then so..?? We did not pay for the roll but that was our last time there. read more

I absolutely love this place. It's right up the street from me, so i go there very often and have never been disappointed. The service is amazing, the food is great, and the price is amazing for what you get. Two of us were able to eat for under $15! The only complaint I ever had was once my tuna nigiri wasn't amazing.. that's about it. Love this place! read more
