Red dragon roll
Mike O.

After a long day touring the city I stopped in at Sushi Fresh for some dinner. While my meal was really good I would recommend taking out. The restaurant itself looks fantastic. It's clean and modern but very small. It can sit about 10 people and definitely cannot accommodate large groups. If I had known that ahead of time I probably would have looked elsewhere for my family of four. I saw most people ordering to go, which I feel is how they get most of their business. The staff was very friendly. You have to order at the counter and they will bring your order to your table. The lady behind the counter was energetic and happy to help. My meal took about 20 minutes to come out and she was very apologetic. She sounded very sincere and apologized 3 times over the course of the night. I wasn't in any rush so it was completely fine. I ordered a red dragon roll, beef gyoza, and the sushi and sashimi combo. The beef gyoza came out first. It was super crispy and cooked perfectly. While it didn't taste much different than your standard gyoza, I loved the crunch on it. The sushi was really good! The fish is cut large and thick, so you know you're getting your money's worth! The rice also has a nice flavor and the sushi as a whole was of really good quality. Overall I really enjoyed my dinner but I would recommend taking out due to the size of the restaurant. A small, quick meal would be fine but I don't think it's well suited for family dinners. The quality of the sushi, on the other hand, is fantastic and I'd definitely order again!

This relatively small place is a good spot to grab a quick and affordable lunch (for the area). The shari is reasonably seasoned and the seafood is good quality for the price. Service is efficient and nice. You pay for your food before sitting down. The salmon was cut just a tad thick but it had a good fattiness that made it okay.

Maguro and Sake sashimi

Excellent and F-R-E-S-H!!! We ordered the shrimp and vegetable tempura, sake and maguro sashimi, ume triple roll and the black dragon roll. The tempura was light and airy. The restaurant changes their oil frequently which is evident in the fragrance of the fried delights. They are generous with their cuts as the eel was a perfect ratio to the other ingredients. The sashimi was fresh and melted on our tongues. The miso soup was great for the fall weather. The service was impeccable especially as they accommodated all our allergies and put sauces on the side. Their friendly service and fresh food is definitely inviting. We will be back!

I had lunch here recently with my husband and it was great. Very affordable, especially for a restaurant in the Byward Market. They have lunch specials from 11am to 2:30pm. We had the Combo #2 ($11.50), which had Miso soup, salad, 2 beef goyza, 3 avocado maki, 3 spicy salmon maki, 3 California maki and 3 shrimp tempura maki. The rolls were freshly made and were tasty. The rice to filling ratio was good. Service was really nice and efficient. The place is really small. It only seats 18 people and there are 2 rectangular tables, so seating is communal. However, we were there on a Wednesday at 12:30pm and there were only 2 other customers there. This place is a bit hidden because it doesn't really have its own sign. It's sort of inside the Lapointes Restaurant. Sushi Fresh is on the ground level and Lapointes is downstairs. So glad we discovered this place :)

I stopped here for a quick lunch! I ordered one of their sushi bento boxes and I was not disappointed. It was brought out quick and it was fresh. There isn't much you can say about sashimi except it's fresh or old! LOL ok ok, I lie, the quality of fish is also important. I had zero issues. I enjoyed my bento box and it was a great price. If I remember correctly, less than $15 after taxes. This was around lunch time.

The seaweed salad was fairly standard

This sushi joint in Byward Market is a fine stop for a fresh and casual meal. I came here for a light dinner, since I had had a very large lunch. The menu has a lot of options - mostly sushi, obviously, but also nice sides and appetizers and a few non-sushi entrees. I ended up ordering a seaweed salad and a spicy tuna roll. The seaweed salad was simple and pretty standard. The tuna roll was tasty and had a good amount of fish. The restaurant ambiance is simple and casual. There weren't a ton of tables, but there was enough space not to feel claustrophobic. The waitress was friendly, though not very attentive. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. I'd come back again for a cheap and easy sushi meal.

I had the Special Roll Moriwase (32pcs) (which came with Spider Roll, Double Shrimp Roll, Caterpillar Roll, Kamikaze Roll) for $43. This was the perfect amount to feed two people. It came with two miso soups. It was confusing to find the restaurant at first because it shares space with a fish and chips spot (downstairs). They share the same entrance as LaPointe restaurant. I saw that there was outdoor dining outside but I think it may belong to LaPointe. The interior is casual. They have wooden tables with a black/industrial theme. They sell snacks like Pocky toward the front of the store. My favorite of the 4 rolls was the double shrimp roll (fresh shrimp on top and shrimp tempura in the middle). I liked that the ginger they gave was cut up really small but they gave very little of it. I thought the rolls were good but in a very simple way. The spider roll was my least favorite because it had an aftertaste I couldn't pinpoint. Their menu is large and offers non-sushi dishes like bento boxes and noodles. Their website says they sell Korean cuisine too but I don't recall seeing it on the menu (I probably missed it).

It was our first-time trying it because the original restaurant we wanted to go to on Somerset was closed, but we were definitely not let down. They open at 11:30 on the weekend and we were a bit early but the staff was super friendly and accommodating- letting us sit down, browse the menu and even place our order before they "officially" opened. Out of all the dine-in korean restaurants we've tried so far in Ottawa (which I know is quite limited and most aren't authentic- but that's not to say they aren't good): Alirang, Maht, Daldongnae, etc. This is definitely top tier AND we will be coming back. As a small business, they are generous with their refillable complimentary side dishes (which is so yum), the flavour HITS, and the service is so good and welcoming. They kept checking in with us, turned down the volume to the TV that we were sitting under, and kept refilling our tea. inside the restaurant is also quite spacious and has comfortable seating arrangements. But we were sitting next to the AC which can be quite breezy!

The restaurant is clean and tidy, which made the experience even more pleasant. Service was attentive, though with only a few tables it's hard to fully judge. Still, everything we needed was taken care of. The food was fresh, portions were generous, and prices felt fair. I especially appreciated that their pancake wasn't overly oily like you often find elsewhere. Dishes leaned on the milder side which made it easy to enjoy everything. The kimchi was a little salty, but the pickled radish was a nice balance. Big plus: they serve Asahi draft, which you don't see everywhere. One small miss was the sundubu being accidentally left off our order, but no big deal, just an excuse to come back and try it next time along with the Kalbi. Seating was comfortable, and I loved the individual wireless table lamps at each table which added a nice touch. Overall, a great first experience and I would definitely return to explore more of the menu.

The tteokbokki or rice cakes were good. The texture was perfectly chewy and the sauce was spicy and sweet. However, for the price, I found the portion to be a bit stingy. The bowl looks large but there isn't much in it, and considering rice cakes aren't that expensive I'm surprised they gave so little. The chicken drumsticks were tasty, but a tad dry. Not sure if it's because they slit it open at various places to let it cook faster. It didn't have the same type of coating as other Korean fried chicken I tried either. Overall, service is attentive and food is good. However, I think I have other places that I prefer for Korean fried chicken in Ottawa.

Ordered an Asahi Super Dry and an order of Beoseot Bulgogi. The beer was super cold, and the Bulgogi came sizzling hot (with a cup of rice and three side bowls) side bowls were toasted sesame flavoured bean sprouts, sweet sauce on turnip, and kimchi). The Bulgogi was not as flavourful as I've had at other establishments. But otherwise it enjoyed. Servers are not very personable. No greeting, just ask how many, seat me in a booth with menu and a slip of paper to write my choice on. 20 minutes later had to wave at them to comeback to take the slip. Btw, at the Merrivale location don't take the first booth, the door is inches behind your bench and everytime the door opens you are blasted with cold air. One other interesting thing to note. My bill didn't seem to be correct. I noticed it was a little higher than I expected, but I tipped 20% and left. I was only given the transaction record. The bulgogi on their menu is $15.95 (as per website), I am pretty sure the beer was $7.95. That totals $23.90. But my bill was $34.92 before tip. $41.90 after tip. So, something happened. But I guess it's my fault for not bringing it up while there.

The food was good, with enough quantity to eat and take home as leftovers. We were a party of nine taking the regular (not BBQ), so they put two tables together for us. Our only complaint about that was that the tables were not the same height. The amenities (restrooms) were not very pleasant, as the trash cans looked as if they have not been emptied in a month (they were overflowing), and there was toiled paper on the floor. In addition, the floor did not look very clean. Food: 4 | Service: 3 | Atmosphere: 2 Recommended dishes: Beef Ribs, Miso Soup Kid-friendliness: There aren't any meals for kids, so you would mostly likely get a couple of dishes and get plates to share.

The side dishes were also quite good! My mandu were slightly burnt/over fried but the delicious and unique filling paired with the good sauce provided made it fine. My only issue is that when I try and return, craving their hearty kimchi stew on a cold day, their hours don't match what's posted online or on the paper outside their restaurant? For example, there's a paper sign on the door that says they take a break from x-3pm , on a day I was reallly looking forward to the comforting stew and warm vibes. I check at 3pm and their OPEN sign is off, alright maybe they need a minute or 2, so I do some rounds and pass by it a few times with it still being closed, I go back home and come back around 4:30 which is well past their reopening time and it's still closed. I gave up cause I was starving and went elsewhere. If this could be updated or made more clear then this review would be much higher. I love the food and it's genuinely authentic Korean food but it's frustrating having plans to go for lunch or even an early dinner and having them squashed by an inconsistent hours schedule.
