J:Unique roll

It was alright! The plum sake was really good and the traditional rolls as well. I personally wasn't a big fan of the J:Unique roll but it was fun to try. It's a small, intimate place with excellent service, so I'm glad we were able to grab a spot on a Monday night.

Oh boy our nation's capital can't get things right (when it comes to sushi :) The dearth of decent sushi continues in Ottawa. This was a delivery expedition and we ordered a bunch of rolls. Despite being visually appealing and OK quality of fish (not that it shines in a roll) the main ingredient in this case i.e. Rice pushed the whole experience off a cliff. We are talking mushy, clingy, soft version that settles in your tummy till the next day. Half way through the roll I started to feel the effects of being bloated. While the presentation is nice and novel in some cases I can't recommend this spot if that's the level of rice we are dealing with here.

Admittedly, I'm no sushi expert but this sushi was delicious and "Unique"! We tried the Toro Toro, Big Boss, Salmon Oshi with Japanese Tea. This was my first time trying Oshi: I will definitely be trying this again. The Big Boss was a mouthful but a welcome treat. All three were very filling! I found that the Japanese Tea complimented the sushi very well. Of note, no reservations. Walk in only. On a Friday, we walked in at 5:30pm and were seated immediately. The restaurant filled up quickly thereafter. Patio seating available.

Presentation is beautiful, dare I say, unique. I definitely get why people here love this place. The taste didn't really stand out to me personally though coming from SF Bay area but I understand it's probably the best Ottawa has got. The yummiest roll was probably the big boss, Godzilla was whatever but was worth seeing the aesthetic.

Finally, a decent sushi spot in Ottawa. I totally recommend coming here for lunch! I have been doubtful about sushi in Ottawa ever since I moved here, but this place proved me wrong. I think the fish is very fresh and good quality, and they even have sockeye salmon. I have only been for lunch, which honestly seems like a deal in comparison to their dinner menu. The restaurant is quite small, so it would be a good idea to make reservations. My friend and I were here for lunch on a Friday ~1 pm and we grabbed the last available table. Green tea was complimentary. Service was friendly but a bit on the slower side. We both ordered the mega set. For $19.95, we each got a miso soup, salad, 3 fried pork gyoza, 4 pieces of tempura (including 1 prawn), 10 pieces of sashimi (chef's choice I assume), 4 pieces of nigiri sushi, and 4 pieces of California roll. I love the variety in this set. It's definitely a decent amount of food for lunch. The tempura is lightly fried and doesn't feel too oily. The fish was all very fresh. I did see that someone who had the set on the table next to us got 2 pieces of toro sashimi whereas we each got 2 pieces of octopus sashimi. I guess it's chef's choice, which is too bad, because I would have totally preferred toro! I was pleasantly surprised to see they offered sockeye salmon, which is rare on the East coast. Everything tasted great and high quality. I think next time, I may try the Oshi sushi set for $18.95. I left the restaurant feeling super satisfied. I plan to be back for lunch soon! Perhaps not dinner, since lunch is much better value and is also available on weekends. I think this will be my go to sushi restaurant in Ottawa when I crave it!

This was a set meal for two, which includes the big boss roll in the middle.

I've been here twice and this has become my favourite sushi spot in Ottawa so far. The sushi is actually on par with some of the places I like in. Toronto. The location is a bit around the corner from bank street. I came on weeknights both times and there were a few tables but it has never been so busy that we needed a reservation. The sashimi is yummy and seems fresh. The rolls are creative and will put together. I really enjoyed everything. Service is excellent as well.

I love this place. The fish is fresh and the ambiance is great. Quick service and friendly staff. It does get very busy when they reopen for dinner service so I recommend going for an early dinner to beat the rush.

3.5 stars Was able to pop in for lunch recently. Nice clean and simple space. As a Torontonian I am very spoiled with regards to restaurant selection, but this place has a pretty good ramen combo. I went with something simple, the shoyu, and it was great for the cooler weather. Simple but tasty broth, good firmness for the noodles. Cha shu was a bit dry. Korokke was nice and crisp and the sauces helped make the flavour profile more exciting. I won't be too quick to judge the sushi yet as I've only had some complimentary California rolls and the spicy salmon roll... but as long as no one's going in expecting hyper traditional stuff (and why would you... unique is in the name) it seems okay so far.

This is definitely one of the best sushi spots in town! It's tiny and cozy and glad we had reservations on Saturday night cause it was quiet busy! Keep in mind kitchen closes early at 9! Parking was not very easy on that street but we walked few steps . The sashimi was super fresh and the best we had in Ottawa! They have 2 pages of special maki rolls.. lots of variety and creativity! Our 2 favourites were the J UNIQUE which was torch flamed and the big boss which got lots going on with those crispy things on top! Prices were decent not too pricy and staff very friendly! Glad we discovered this place and definitely will back

One of my favorite spots for a la carte sushi in Ottawa. Located in Centretown, the sushi here is very fresh and presented very nicely. The lunch special is a great deal, but be sure to get here early for a table. Thoroughly enjoyed the aburi sushi!

It was really delicious! We tried five different sushi plates and all of them were perfect! For sure I'll visit again!

Ramen with Soy Sauce

I was searching for the best Ramen place in Ottawa and finally found it! After so many unsuccessful tries of noodle broths with no creativity and cooking skills, I found a place where you get Ramen with 4 California rolls and Japanese Gyoza. It is wonderful to have it, but rolls have crab sticks inside, which is a really cheap product. Maybe if they were with salmon and the total price of Ramen combo will be $17 instead of $15inish. BTW, the broth is Veggie and if are Muslim then don't forget to ask for no pork inside. Please, if you are the owner and you read this, instruct your waitresses to check the goddamn instructions carefully, cause we asked for no corn in Ramen, and guess they served us freaking corn.

Sockeye Salmon Pressed Oshi

Visited Ottawa this past weekend and my friend kept raving about this place, and she doesn't even like sushi! Our group of 10 was seated outside - perfect weather and gave us so much space. I heard it was very small inside the actual restaurant, but it was pretty small outside too. We were a group of 10 and only another table of 2 was available outside. For food, we ordered the gyoza, takoyaki, spicy salmon roll, red dragon roll, j:unique roll, sockeye salmon pressed sushi and the chef's special sashimi platter. The presentation of each dish was very simple and neat, the red dragon roll and sashimi platter had the best aesthetics though! But more importantly, everything was delicious! There was not one dish that we did not like. All the sushi dishes tasted fresh and sooo tender that it melted in your mouth. Our favourite is definitely the sashimi platter - every piece was thick and super fresh. Even the shrimp sashimi was the biggest I've ever had compared to all sushi restaurants I've tried in my whole life. This was really worth your money! Definitely recommend this item. Service was also great! Our waitress was very sweet and always made sure we had everything we needed at every moment (but not overbearing YOU KNOW?). There was a button for us to press for service too if we ever needed anything and she wasn't outside. Very small detail but made such a big difference to our experience! Food also came out at a reasonable time. No complaints what so ever about J:Unique! Glad this was the first stop for food during our trip in Ottawa - already excited to come back again!!

I've had sushi plenty in Vancouver and Toronto, and this place was disappointing in comparison (even to Toronto sushi). I think AYCE sushi is more popular in Ottawa. This is one of the few places that do a la carte. I found the prices to be a bit expensive for what you get. 3 of us shared a sushi and sashimi party tray. It came to around $30 a person, and was quoted on the menu to be for about 3-4 people. I would say it's barely enough for 3 very small people, let alone 4. It did not come with miso soup or salad. The quality of the sushi was nothing to be amazed about. Although it was probably a bit better than AYCE, I think for the prices, I'd expect better quality sushi. If I had to, I'd choose AYCE sushi over this in Ottawa. Also, in terms of authenticity, I think this place is Chinese owned. It is a small establishment, so if you want to be sure you get a table, I'd recommend reservations. There is street parking available on Somerset. I likely won't be back, and will definitely try my hardest to persuade my friends to go elsewhere if they want to come back.

Their sushi is delicious, especially for takeout sushi. I decided to get a platter for dinner for my husband and I. I got their Maki Platter A, which is 36 pieces for $47.95. You get 8 pieces of California, 8 pieces of Spicy Salmon, 10 pieces of Dynamite and 10 pieces of Orange Dragon. UberEats was having a special where if you spend $40 or more you save $11. So I ordered through UberEats for pick up and saved $11 :) Note that with this deal you pay taxes on the regular price and then get $11 off the post-tax total. It took about 25 minutes and pick up was quick. Staff were nice. The rolls were delicious. I loved that the rolls were mostly filling with very little rice. I had requested no sesame seeds and that was no problem at all. The California rolls had cucumber and surimi crab and was topped with masago. The Spicy Salmon rolls had raw salmon mixed with spicy mayo and was topped with tempura bits. The Dynamite rolls had shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumbers, and surimi crab and was topped with masago. The Orange Dragon rolls were Dynamite rolls with the additional topping of sliced raw salmon and sliced avocado. While everything was tasty, I did feel that this platter could have used more variety. The Dynamite and Orange Dragon rolls were too similar. Nonetheless, my husband and I enjoyed the platter. I feel it's a good size for dinner for 2 people. Glad to have discovered this sushi takeout joint near my current work place. It's so convenient to pick up a platter for dinner. Street parking or paid parking in the various nearby lots only.

I had lunch at Yuzumi and it was delicious!…read more Yuzumi opened in August 2019 and took over the space that was The Bowl. It serves primarily poke/rice bowls, sandwiches, and sushi rolls. I had the Shrimp Po Boy Sandwich with a side salad ($13.95). I loved that the shrimp in the Po Boy was not breaded/deep fried, so it didn't taste greasy or oily at all. The amount of shrimp was good, as I had shrimp in each bite. The sauce had a slight spicy kick to it, and the cabbage slaw added a nice crunchy texture, and a bit of creaminess without being too rich. The bread was dense and it held the sandwich together well, the bread did not get soggy and the sandwich did not fall apart. I thoroughly enjoyed the sandwich. The side salad was real mixed greens (hurray for no iceberg and no romaine!). It had shredded carrots, cucumbers and grape tomatoes. Vegetables were fresh, and the dressing arrived on the side as requested. The dressing was a sweet and sour vinaigrette, which I enjoyed, as it wasn't too oily. Service was friendly and the place was bright and clean. The layout is unchanged from when the space was The Bowl. It's a very casual eatery for a quick meal, by yourself or with coworkers or friends. Not exactly a romantic spot for a date, IMO. There's one gender-neutral washroom at the back of the restaurant. It was clean. A great place to grab lunch/early dinner (they close at 5pm) if you work at Tunney's Pasture, or live nearby. I'm looking forward to trying their other options! Street parking only.
