TL;DR: Cute little sushi restaurant on the main floor of an apartment building. Not gourmet sushi but good for the price. I've had Orchid Sushi on my list of places to try for a long time now. I finally managed to get some takeout from them. UberEats was having a special on some of their rolls and 20% off on some other rolls and I took advantage of this deal. I got the Spicy Shrimp Futomaki which was 5 pieces for $8.20, this was the 20% off price. I also got the California Futomaki which was 5 pieces for $9.95 but this was buy one get one free (BOGO) so I got 10 pieces for that price. Finally, I got the Cucumber Hosomaki which was $6.25 for 6 pieces and this was also BOGO. I ordered on the UberEats app and went to the store to pick it up. The food was ready in about 20 minutes. Service was quick and efficient. I requested no sesame seeds and my order came as requested. The rolls were tasty. It's not gourmet sushi, but better than the casual fast food sushi restaurants. The cucumber rolls had wasabi in them, so had a spicy kick. The spicy shrimp rolls weren't all that spicy, but were the most delicious of the three rolls. The shrimp were plump and had a great texture. I loved the tempura bits in it. It also had avocado, oshinko, and tobiko. There was spicy mayo in it, but it wasn't all that spicy. The California rolls were also quite good. They had artificial crab, mayo, avocado, cucumber, tamago, and masago. The artificial crab was shredded which I don't like as much as when they leave it whole, but I liked that it had tamago in it. I had salmon, avocado and cucumber maki plus a sushi pizza A sushi pizza is a really tricky thing to do, they can vary between tasty and insipid. This was middling but on the weaker side, packed with a seafood salad and topped with smoked salmon. I was disappointed with the smoked salmon, because I felt that really wasn't what I ordered. It has a totally different flavour and I don't love smoked salmon. After having horrible sushi from a grocery store nearby I wasn't feeling like sushi in O town. The first choice that came up wasn't taking dine in so we ended up here. I had called in to reserve which is great as the dine in seating was limited due to the pandemic. Word of caution though I didn't realize that they don't have LLBO licence so you can't order alcohol here. I stuck with the rolls here. I ordered a few signature rolls and added a spicy hotate for good measure. I enjoyed my sushi rolls here (though it might have been the garbage rolls I tried from a grocery store earlier that made them taste better:). The service is decent. Upon walking into Orchid, you will be immediately struck by the "wow, this is not a good layout for a restaurant" feeling. The first time being here, and I wasn't sure where I was supposed to go. Was greeted by the Sushi Chefs as the kitchen is within 10 paces of the door. Decided to take one of the four seats at the sushi bar. There was a stack of menus on the bar that I helped myself to. Decided to go with the Avo roll, Red Tokyo, and a Nizakama roll. One of the chefs working in the bar then came out and provided some water, but never actually to any drink order. Ok, I'll just stay with water then. Shortly there after my rolls where in front of me. The presentation was well done. The first bites in. Yup, it's pretty good. Not outstanding, but definitely good. Nice flavour combos as well. Once done, since I was solo, I decided to head out. But wasn't sure if I actually had a server ! So I just took the one step over to the cash machine and paid my bill. Overall, Nice sushi, good presentation. Not sure who was my server, so that left me confused. The place has an odd layout, and it could use a bit of an upgrade. Not dirty, just a bit dated. Great service from a gentleman who gave us extra sauces and who was so patient over the phone when I was trying to decide which rolls to get. I'm from Toronto and am visiting Ottawa for a few days and I'm happy that I stumbled over this gem of a spot. The food looks beautiful and taste just as great! I remember when I first looked up the Yelp reviews of this restaurant. 4.5 stars out of 5? I'll admit, I was very skeptical, but I decided to give it a try. Never has my skepticism been so wrong before! This place is, simply put, amazing. The good: - One of the best sushis I have ever had. All the rolls are made with attention to detail and very fresh ingredients. The seaweed was crisp, the rice was aromatic, and the fish were expertly sliced. - Fresh sashimis. - Some of their special rolls (esp. Full Moon), while pricey, were truly a unique experience on the palate. Highly recommended! - Great presentation of food. - Great wakame salad, highly recommended. - Free edamame beans if sitting in! - Small, friendly group of staff. - Very affordable for the quality. The not-so-good: - Interior decor is lackluster. Suggest ordering to go/delivery, or eating on the patio when the weather permits it. - If eating on site, expect to wait a while for the food. However, the quality of the food more than makes up for it. - The salmon roe was not the freshest I've had; all other sashimis were great. We are visiting Ottawa from Toronto and saw this as a fairly well rated local sushi restaurant near our hotel. Unfortunately Orchid Sushi greatly underwhelmed, as I cannot find a single aspect of our meal that is positive. For the tldr; service is slow, decor is underwhelming, and most importantly - the food was bland and almost insultingly expensive given we could make far better sushi at home. We're not unaccustomed to feeling a bit disappointed by sushi restaurants, but this one takes the cake. For more detail read below: Service was slow, and we had to repeat our requests numerous times. It was nearly 30 minutes from the time we sat down to when we even got water, which we had to ask for twice. We had to ask in turn for chopsticks; soy sauce dishes; straws for our kids' water (which we asked for twice...); and tea. If it was busy we could understand, but when we arrived there was only one other table with guests, and they were nearly finished. We were incredibly even told that the food was delayed due to how busy it was - but again no one else arrived at the restaurant for at least the first 30 minutes of our meal. I understand the restaurant does take-out, but surely if one table is all that is being served the kitchen should be able to handle that? The decor is, as others have mentioned, basic and disorganized. I don't normally fault restaurants for that as often some of the best food is not from the showiest of restaurants, but in this case, it added to our displeasure. But the biggest problem was the sushi itself. The rice had NO seasoning. None. Sushi is supposed to have vinegared rice, but we received either very little seasoning or none whatsoever. It also was quite dry and stale. We ordered the 50 piece combo dinner. The maki we had were very tiny and had very poor balance of flavour; and most of what little food there was in each bite contained mostly - you guessed it - totally flavourless rice. The portions of fish and other ingredients in the maki were very small and had very little nuance or flavour. The spicy tuna for example seemed almost totally devoid of what is spelt out in the name of the dish - spice! It was as though I was eating red-dyed flake tuna from a can offered with day-old plain rice. The maki were also cut in uneven sizes - this wouldn't be itself a bad thing were it not for the fact that it demonstrated poor quality control or that they were rushing our food out (hard to believe given how long we waited). The nigiri were equally dry as the maki, and perhaps most importantly; although the fish wasn't terrible - it wasn't terribly good either. To top it all off, although of course I saw the price of the food when we were ordering, I was still shocked when I got the bill as it dawned on me how outrageous the price was given the poor quality food, small portions, and poor service. For the amount of food received, I'd expect to pay a third or so less at other sushi restaurants at home, or have the quality of food and service be exponentially better. read more

We were in town for a coule of days to visit with family before Christmas. The MIL has nobody here that likes sushi so we took her for dinner. We live in the Vancouver area so we're pretty spoiled when it comes to any kind of seafood. We found Orchid on the recommendation of the concierge at the hotel and while there were only 2 reviews on Yelp they were both favorable so we decided to give it a try. The restaurant itself is odd for a sushi joint in terms of decor - feels more like a cross between a nail salon & a chinese restaurant. We had the place to ourselves, I guess Monday isn't a big night for sushi in Ottawa. At the time of writing this, Yelp says their hours are 11pm to 9pm which makes no sense and is very much an error. So if you look at the top of the Yelp page and it says "closed" don't necessarily believe it. Now on to the food which is what you really care about. We had 6 rolls off the menu and the chef made us a "special roll" (kitchen sink mix which was yummy) and they were all really good, very fresh & good flavor mix & nice sizes. I found the tea to be on the bitter side but the miso soup (shrimp) was very tasty. The only truly disappointing part was that the restaurant ISN'T LICENSED. So if you want an adult beverage you won't be able to have a saki or Sapporo. Parking can be an issue as it's on the edge of downtown & between the construction & snow, there was nowhere to put the car. Very fortunately we were at the Delta so the MIL & I got dropped off while the SO parked the car back at the hotel then we had a nice but chiily walk back. No big deal, if you lived close by or worked in the area it would be fine. Next time we visit we will likely try somewhere else but this was good & if I lived close, I would probably get take out quite often. read more

The first thing I'd note about this place is that it has fantastic menu! It has a bunch of things that are a bit unconventional and over the board like shrimp tempura wrapped in smoked salmon and salmon-caviar-strawberry maki. But it also has a great selection of the more traditional maki, futomaki, appetizers, etc. Whichever Japanese food lover you are - the traditional one or the experimentalist, you'll find something to your liking. Food is good quality, delivery takes forever and service is hit or miss. We have ordered for delivery weekly for the past two and a half years, spending a decent amount every week. When ordering, they will quote "45 minutes to 60 minutes maximum" delivery time, orders show up after 80-90 minutes and usually items are forgotten at the restaurant (usually equals every second or third order). They charge an exorbitant amount for replacing a soy sauce for a sesame sauce ($3, it's not like we're getting both sauces). They discourage ordering online even though they offer the service, simply because they do not want to pay the fee to menu.ca (they have said this to us several times). Their only saving grace is they have pretty good sushi. Unfortunately, that is hard to find in Ottawa. read more

Amazing!! It was my second time to have their food(first one was takeout) and it was truly amazing. Me & my husband started with miso & Tom yum soup with prawn tempura(it was love) and had unagi maki, fire house, Ottawa and spicy escolar hosomaki. Everything was great and delicious. Great sushis! Super fresh and tasty. BUT!!! I had them delivered to my hotel. The waitress called me 2 times to have the address and to know how to get there. The owner also called twice. I gave her the full address 4 times, explained them what bridge to take, on what street to make a right turn (I'm from Mtl, had to look at google map to help them). I believe they don't have neither a GPS, Internet nor a map. I even suggest for them to call the hotel reception desk (they said they didn't have the time for that). The service was awful because they don't even give you a menu, you have to ask for it. Also they don't even care about whether you are there or not.
