First off we just came here on a whim. It was divine. We were seated quickly. We were lucky as It seemed most of the tables were reserved. We sat down and ordered pretty quick and did not wait long, but long enough to enjoy my company. My loving husband. We enjoyed a "sushi pizza" to start and It was fried yumminess. Just crispy and fresh. Then we had a few specialty rolls and a tuna/green onion roll. Everything was so perfect. Fresh, well made, beautifully presented. The service was friendly and helpful. After a long morning at the office I started to crave some sushi. So I went to my local sushi bar on Preston street. When I entered there was a friendly attendant who greeted me, I told her that I was interested in their lunch menu. I checked the whole menu, their prices were fair. I chose the bento box 1 (lunch special)..I probably waited less than 10min for my order to be completed. I took the chance to check out the restaurant. It is extremely clean and elegantly decorated, the staff is very attentive of their customers. Great place to be! When I got to the office, I was blown away by the aesthetic of the presentation and the scrumptious taste of each item in my bento box. Top notch service. Very nice, friendly, professional customer service-oriented wait staff. Mainly because this is one of the few restaurants in Ottawa where they actually have enough staff to service the restaurant properly! Service was fast. Anytime you asked for something, you got it very quickly, whether it was a dish, some ice, cutlery or the bill. Excellent Edamame and Spring Rolls to start. Edamame nice sweet flavour with just the right amount of salt on the bean pods. Spring rolls were small but tasty and crunchy. Had the Tempura and Beef Teriyaki main course. The Tempura included 2 shrimp tempura and 3-4 vegetable tempura. Beef Teriyaki was very tasty without being overly salty. I was disappointed it came as ultra thin small pieces instead of an actual piece of steak, then went I tasted it, the disappointment went away. Very well done. A few pieces of carrots and broccoli on the side of beef. Main course came with steamed rice and miso soup. Miso soup smelled quite smoky, but did not taste too smoky. The only real negative is even though it was mid-January in Ottawa and -15C outside, the restaurant was STIFLING HOT!! Not sure if it's the kitchen heat entering the dining room or just overheating dining area, but it was uncomfortably hot. Must have been at least 25C in the restaurant. My friend and I always go back to Kiko, mainly because they do have a lot of vegetarian options for me. Also it's right in the middle of Little Italy which is where we like to hang out. My favorite gelato shop is across the sheet. I like the interior design of the restaurant. It's very pretty, very clean. The staff is very friendly when you walk in and very accommodating. For anyone who needs to be gluten free like I do (celiac disease), this place is GF-friendly. They can make most of their maki rolls gluten free. The only ones they cannot make gluten free are the ones that have soy sauce as a marinating sauce. But what I like about this place was that our server was really knowledgable about what could or couldn't be gluten free. She also asked for some maki rolls to be changed so I could eat it. And they even had gluten free tamari sauce! I've been to many sushi places in Ottawa and very few have tamari sauce. I had the yasai maki, kappa maki, sweet potato maki, and a few others that I found were simply delicious. My friend loved the dragon and spider rolls. We just kept ordering more. We also shared edamame. In a way I prefer to eat à la carte over all you can eat. With the latter, you can get pulled into the "eat as much as you can" theme and you don't quite enjoy the experience that you are supposed to feel when eating out. Some people I know have pointed out that it isn't authentic sushi but western sushi, but let's be real: this is Ottawa. We barely have quality ramen shops, and sushi can be great but it is nothing like what you will experience in other larger cities in Canada. The food here is yummy, and the eating experience is great. I recommend it. read more

I've been craving Asian food but there aren't a lot of Asian people or cuisine in Ottawa. When I saw this place, I got very excited and walked in without thinking about anything! Well, the place had very pretty and colorful Asian-style decors. Also, the seats are very comfortable! Those cushions!! I could sit there all day! I went around 1/1:30pm, so it was right after lunch time rush. Because there weren't many customers, the waitress was extra attentive and friendly. I was very thirsty and downed the glass of water very quickly, and she would come frequently to refill my glass! Based on the environment and service, I would give this place at least a 4 star. However, the food I got was bad. Maybe I should've gotten sushi or asked for the waitress's recommendations on the customers' favorites. I got the duck spring rolls and Korean-style wings. The spring roll had too much meat and not enough veggies! Since it was a spring roll I was expecting it to be more veggie based. The lack of veggies made it rather heavy! The Korean wings were very fat and hairy. I think the sauce is pretty good and spicy, but I can't do fatty wings. read more

I've been trying to find a good quality sushi restaurant since our perennial favorite sushi restaurant, Wasabi, closed their doors. For my first visit to Kiko, i am very happy. Ordered their deliciously prepared raw oysters. Yum! A spicy scallop roll did not disappoint. And finding they had Gomae (Blanched spinach with sesame) on their menu was a most pleasant surprise! The edamame was slightly over cooked, and a little plain, but still good. Overall, I'll definitely be coming back and I look forward to dining on their nice patio! read more

Pretty expensive for mediocre to decent quality fish. The sashimi is not very fresh or high quality. For example, the salmon sashimi was not very fatty and the tuna was frozen. I may be coming off as cynical and picky, but I expected higher quality for the price tag. The Kraken, a flagship item, was also a let down. For 22$, I expected actual sashimi to be in the roll, not just imitation crab stick. While Kiko Sushi bar has the atmosphere and service of a higher priced sushi place, the food definitely is not up to par. read more

Ordered the Kyoto Dinner for takeout. 30$ for 25 assorted sushi items. Decent and enough for 2, if not a tad expensive. Fish is extremely fresh and there are lots of options to choose from. Everything looked delicious, and their salmon is especially good. If you take your time to look through the menu you can definitely have a moderate-priced meal, or go all out and spend $$$. A downside would be that it's hard to figure out how much you get for your money. A lot of the combos just describe the type of sushi and not the amount of rolls or pieces. If you're there in person I'd definitely ask lots of questions. We tried one of the salads, the sweet vinegar one, and it's not really my thing, but it was still a decent portion and freshly made. All in all: seems like a fairly reliable place to go for sushi, at a price that's more reasonable than what you tend to find downtown. Sushi and wine snobs, take note! Kiko has fresh fish and $15 per bottle corkage. The restaurant itself is spacious and modern. We were there on a Wednesday night and had the place to ourselves. The super fresh sushimi was the star of our meal. The two rolls (Cherry Blossom and Kiko Special) where good but nothing to write home about. If you care about wine, skip the uninspired wine list and bring your own. Kiko is on my short list of restaurants to return to for a high quality casual meal. Kiko Sushi is a sit-down sushi restaurant located in the heart of Ottawa's Little Italy. I had heard good things about the place and decided to try it out. They have patio seating for those beautiful summer night. The restaurant itself had great design. The decor was was hip, minimalist and chill, with shaded lighting and beautiful bamboo decorations. The restaurant offers enough vegetarian and vegan options that one could eat there comfortably. The lunch menu is very reasonable, with meals as low as 11$. I visited Kiko for dinner. I ordered my good ole Chirachi and my guest had a salmon teriyaki bento box. The meals included soup or salad. The meals were more expensive then similar dishes ordered at Festival Japan or Sushi 88, but the quality and meal presentation were excellent. The fishes were all excellent! They didn't serve any oilfish, which is nice. The service staff were quick, courteous and efficient. The drink menu was extensive and offered all sort of cocktails, sakes and drinks. They also offer deserts including great tea ice cream, tempura ice cream, fruit and crepes. Next time I go back I want to try their tempura ice cream. Overall I look forward to returning to Kiko. If you can afford spending 25-30$ a head before drinks and taxes, then come here and come here often! read more

Visited Kiko for dinner a couple of weeks ago on a Friday evening. Nice looking place overall. Tried a number dishes including the beef tataki, the kraken (full squid), the chirashi don and the mango tango rolls. Overall, this was some of the best Japanese food I've had in Ottawa to date. That being said, the food is certainly a bit more expensive than other comparable places. The only real downside was the the service - although friendly, it took over an hour to receive our order - glad to say at least it was worth the wait! read more

New place on Preston. Nice interior. Attentive staff. Very spacious, (mostly empty) but also good for those who don't like lots of tables crammed together. Ordered one of those funky hybrid rolls (Kamikaze, I think) the kind that has the usual roll stuff on the inside plus some crunchy tempura flakes and something else rolled around the outside -- tuna maybe? Very good. So good we ordered a second similar roll with smoked eel. Nice, each of these was about 8 bucks. Also ordered another small tuna roll (about 4 bucks). Not remarkable but the fish was fresh. I was there with a 2/1 facebook coupon. I think most of the other diners had one too (by most, I mean the other 8 people in the restaurant.) Not sure the place is going to last long unless it can hold on until the summer patio season, in which case it has a prime location and lay-out. One bonus is that they offer free parking in the new garage under the building after 5:30. A great benefit given how crappy Preston Street parking is in the evenings. Try it, but you'd better hurry. read more

Went here for lunch on a weekday. Pretty extensive menu, I was impressed by that. The place is decorated quite nice. Our servers were polite and friendly, but they were a bit inattentive and didn't come around to refill our tea - one star off for that. Depending on what you order lunch could either be moderately priced or quite expensive. I had an order of goma-ae and an avocado roll and it was $10. Given the area and what I usually pay for lunch at a nice sit-down restaurant, that seems about average. They do have a variety of veggie rolls, which is nice. Choices actually go beyond your run-of-the-mill avocado roll and kappa maki. They also have a variety of noodle dishes. read more

To start the sashimi and the Phillian Special roll were fantastic, fresh and very tasty. But I am pretty disappointed with the service. The restaurant was almost empty, but it took a very long time to get my order. There were two take outs and one table with seven or eight people but other than that I was alone. I had to ask twice for water even though the waitress came by and asked how my food was (which, again, was fantastic) and looked at my empty water glass and walked away. The food was a 4.5 to 5, but I can't go above a 3 with the staff and long wait. read more

The online pictures make this place look a lot fancier than it really is. In real life, it is a "fast food" style with modernesque decor. Service was extremely slow. This complaint seems to be common with other reviewers, so I know this is a legitimate issue. Between arriving and the first dish arriving, it was an hour. There were only nine other customers in the restaurant so I don't know what they were doing. One of the problems is that take out sushi orders seem to take precedence to customers in the restaurant. I saw some orders going out the door while I was waiting for my order. The other problem is that their chefs do not seem to work as fast as chefs I've seen at other places. Finally, watch out for the auto tip option on the credit card machine. Otherwise, you will be charged 17% tip calulated after the tax is included, whereas standard tip is 15% before the tax is included. I certainly didn't think this was warranted after the slow service. You have to force cancel the credit card machine to allow you to enter the tip. Best advice: pay by cash. read more

It is so hard finding a good sushi place in Ottawa. SO HARD. Most online sushi reviews are usually written by people who don't even know what good sushi is. I know that sounds arrogant, but there are so many people who a judge sushi place after only eating some vegetarian rolls and eating the cooked food. Many people also judge a place badly because they feel like they didn't get enough food for the money. Fresh fish this inland is expensive. Hiring a good sushi chef is expensive. 1. Good sushi should not be cheap. Period. It should not be all you can eat either. 2. It's all about the fish people! Every time I have been here so far, the fish has been fresh. Not only that, but there are the little things this place does like giving you shiso leaves with your fish instead of garnishing with parsley. Is this place 5/5 for by Vancouver or New York standards? No. But for Ottawa, this and C'est Japon a Suisha are as close as it gets. Thank you Kiko! My daughter and I, both sushi affecionadas loved what we had at Kiko's. We went just before 9pm on a Friday and the place was half-full; the setting is trendy, maybe not cosy enough,but I admit there are two sections, one of which we did not look at. We both had had bad all-you-can-eat sushi lately and did not want a repeat. My saba sushi (the mackerel was well cut, looked very elegant, the rice was subtly seasoned (the way I prefer it) with just the right amount of stickiness.The piece was the perfect size for a mouthful. The agedashi tofu came with a dust of batter, piping hot in the very tasty broth; I took the non-spicy one. The tofu was maybe not as fresh as it could have been. The inari sushi was very good and with black sesame added to the rice, the tofu pouch was maybe a little too sweet for my taste but overall everything was very well done, presented and quickly eaten. My daughter had a perfect California roll without the fish eggs.She thought it was one of the better ones. We both have been spoiled over the years by my son who is a really good sushi chef out west. Although we did not have much variety, the quality made it that much more enjoyable. No hesitation to go back, soon! They clearly forgot to submit our go to order, then tried to blame the delay on having only one chef. There were a total of 5 tables of people in the whole place. My favourite is the preston roll and the Kraken, (sushi inside a squid) Be prepared to wait a bit, the service is a bit slow, but the quality of the sushi makes up for it. This was the most uncomfortable and unpleasant experience we've ever had in a sushi place. Some foods were simply inedible at all! I ordered a bowl of miso soup and could not eat it because it tasted like a mix of medicine, dishwashing liquid, and dirty sponge water. How do you mess up something as basic as miso soup? Tuna tataki were also not tasty at all! Again, how do you take something so delicious and make a complete nonsense out of it is a mystery to me.. Finally, rolls: tasted ok, but expensive and very small! I am not sure I have seen smaller rolls anywhere in Canada or in the world. I would, certainly, choose supermarket rolls over what Kiko is offering any day! I'm genuinely finding it hard to say anything good about this place, but I'll try. It has nice space and the waitresses are cute, but once you realize that they do not know the basics of etiquette (e.g., the sequence of bringing drinks, appetisers, seating guests, etc.), the charm goes away. At 7:40, we called the restaurant, and the nice sounding person on the phone sounded annoyed at their own delivery person when they said that the food was ready on time but the driver "just left with it a few minutes ago." Disappointing. My family and I have been long time supporters of Kiko. Unfortunately, tonight's experience has made us rethink this restaurant as our "go-to" Japanese restaurant. The food was ok but: One person's meal was not brought with the other 5 people's meals. No explanation. No apology. And, when asked (after a lengthy wait) where the food was, the reply was a curt "Its coming." We could no longer substitute the miso soup for a bowl of rice. Waitress argued about a menu item until the diner produced the menu and showed her. Parking is no longer validated. Tempura dipping sauce was forgotten. None of these items are significant unto themselves but together they spoiled what is normally a lovely experience. Next time we are going to C'est Japon a Suisha on Slater Street. read more
