I had dinner here with my Yelp friends Jana D and Norm D. Most people at the restaurant were having the all you can eat Korean BBQ, and I think that that's what the restaurant is known for, but we didn't feel like AYCE so we ordered from their regular menu (note that all people in your party have to get the AYCE or they all have to order from the menu, you can't have some people at your table doing one and some people doing the other). Overall, I thought the food was just ok, but it might be what I ordered because Jana's and Norm's dishes looked tastier than mine, lol. I had the "rice cake and vegetables soup with beef dumplings" ($11.95). I've had this dish before at other restaurants (admittedly in Toronto though, never in Ottawa) and the one here was just ok. First off, when I got my soup they forgot to add the beef dumplings, so I informed the server and she brought it back to the kitchen. Shortly after, she brought it back with the dumplings. Not a huge deal, but I think they rushed to get the dumplings in because the dumpling wrapper was a little undercooked. Although I do understand why the kitchen felt rushed because everyone else at the table had their meals and I'm sure the kitchen felt bad that I was just sitting there. I got about 3-4 dumplings and other than the wrapper being slightly undercooked, they were good. The portion of the soup was very generous. I love Korean rice cakes, but I couldn't finish it because I had so many rice cakes in the soup! I was a bit disappointed that the "vegetables" turned out to be just green onions :( I was hoping for more of a variety of vegetables. The broth was an egg drop broth and while good, a bit on the salty side. There was lot of egg though :) Jana's Bibimbap looked delicious and so did Norm's Chicken Teriyaki. Jana and Norm were also nice enough to let me share some of their Seafood Pancake. It was great. I didn't taste too much seafood in it, but it tasted like a potato latke. I love latkes, so I loved the pancake. It was crispy on the outside, and it wasn't too salty. They got a small (which I believe was $6.95) and it was fairly big. I think the large would be a meal in itself (although I think the large was $11.95). The restaurant also pre-cuts it for you in pieces, which I thought was excellent. We also got some free appetizers (banchan). We got some bean sprouts, kimchi, potatoes, shredded daikon radish, and seaweed. I only tried the potatoes, and the radish, both were good. I'm not a fan of the rest. Service was good. Our server refilled our waters often. Decor was nice. They had some unusual looking antique telephones by the cash register which I thought were cool. If I return I would want to try the Bibimbap, Beef Bulgogi or the all you can eat Korean BBQ. read more

This was the venue chosen for Ottawa's very first Supper Club dinner. Three of us turned out for this inaugural event. I hope we will have a better turn out for future events, but the 3 of us enjoyed each others' company and the experience. I didn't really know what to expect here, as I've never eaten at an "official" Korean restaurant before. I'm glad I read other peoples' reviews as I was sitting in our booth trying to figure out what to order, and sought advice. Besides, I had no idea what that button on the wall was for! However, we didn't need it while we dined at Koreana; the service was attentive enough, even filling our water glasses without the need to be asked. (ICYMI, that button is the way we are supposed to call the waiter / waitress!) Based on what I had heard before eating here, I was expecting a buffet to be laid out and on display as I have seen in other AYCE buffets before (ie: think Mandarin), but that's not the case here. Koreana's version of "AYCE" means that all the people in your party need to be on board if you are ordering AYCE: everyone seated with you will be charged the AYCE price of $22.95 per person. And then when it is brought to you, you have to cook it yourself. Looks like a lot of food, too! The tables have burners in the centre of them, but I saw beef cooking over a flame (in a stand for this purpose) that was placed at the edge of the table rather than cooked over the burner built into the table. So be ready for all of this before going in! What they did have on display was some beautiful salmon. Presumably that was for the sushi, but I'm not sure. We ended up ordering from the menu, everyone finding something a little different. We started with a fish cake which tasted a bit like a potato latka, and it was very tasty. Then they brought out small sampler plates which surprised me; apparently these are Korean appetizers which come with the meal. There was seaweed, something made of radishes that resembled coleslaw, potatoes, and 3 other dishes. I liked to potatoes, and really liked the radish dish. I ordered the Bibimap, based on a review I saw here in Yelp, and the description of it on the menu; it was tasty. Hubby ordered Chicken Teriyaki (I tasted his too; really good!) Koreana was one of my favourite Korean bbq restaurants in town. They are unfortunately not allergy friendly for gluten, or MSG but if you do not have allergies, I would highly recommend trying it. When you order the bbq style that you cook yourself at the table, everything is brought over in small batch orders. Their pork and beef are phenomenal, and their dumplings I still have dreams about. So when indoor dining opens up again definitely get in there and try it out, the ambience and service are great, as well as the food. They do also offer all menu items as an a la carte option if you want to give them a try without committing to a full dinner. read more

Went to this Korean place several times throughout 2020 to 2021 and the place was good during those times. Me and my wife decided to come tonight for a meal. Upon coming in, I noticed the decor was dirty and drab looking. We sat near the window and I noticed a lot of dust and dirt on their window panes and fake plants. The seats were cushions but I saw that the cushions were crusted with dirt and dust. As I was eating, specs of the table flaked onto my pants. The staff were on their phones over span of time too. After getting sat, we decided to get the all you can eat. We ordered a round of everything. The server was friendly and attentive, but the food wasn't up to the usual korean standard. The Korean pancakes seemed like they were out of a cupboard. We had to grill them up on the frying pan ourselves. The meat was fine but the experience wasn't great. As I paid, what appeared to be the house manager rang up the bill and told me the cost. She mentioned that gratuity was included already. She meant that she added the gratuity herself (which was 15%). My bill was 65 dollars after tax and she added on another 9. I was very taken aback and was shocked at her non chalant demeanor. I ended up paying, but I looked through the menu and didn't see anywhere stating a fixed gratuity. Now, I'm never the one to give bad reviews, this is my first actual review on this site, but it erks me that a place was so dusty with expectations of grand tips like this. read more

Excellent food very friendly staff, great experience. Also this restaurant is accepting credit cards which is good to keep in mind when you are traveling from the US. ****3.5 STARS**** The food here was good in capturing the Korean cuisine but I felt some dishes weren't executed well. Otherwise, the food gave a homemade style feeling which is awesome! My partner and I went in for a la carte. I ordered the tofu stew but all the contents in it ended up being a little mushy to distinguish which was a little disappointing. Otherwise, the taste was decent! My partner got the cold bowl which they said tasted like cold noodles with poké bowl ingredients - very fresh! We shared the bulgogi, seafood pancake, and sashimi. The bulgogi was really tough like it was jerky beef than real beef. My partner has gone here since he was a kid and said maybe it's just the dish we got today because typically it's really tender (I hope this was the case!). The seafood pancake was also a lot more batter than ingredients but still tasted pretty good. But omg the sashimi was delicious! I was craving raw fish and this did not disappoint. Overall I had a great time dining there; I'm glad to see their business is still booming despite the pandemic. I would love to try this place out again for the AYCE experience. I was just a little underwhelmed with some dishes, hence the 3.5 stars. Perhaps this may be I eat at a lot of Korean restaurants in Toronto and Waterloo that I can't help but compare it to those restaurants. Nonetheless, support their business! Nov 12, 2021 - My birthday. My parents said they would take me for dinner if I didn't have any other plans. And I didn't. They noted that every year I'm always suggesting Korean food and we haven't done it yet. So I Googled and picked the restaurant that had the best reviews - Koreana. It turned out to be lots of fun. It seems to be a pretty old restaurant, so it's got a cosy feel. And there's a photo of Pierre Trudeau eating there. So I guess it has been there a while. You can order out a card, or all you can eat. So we got the all you can eat. My dad was starting to write down choices but then I said let's just get one of everything and see what we like. It was all delicious. And you get to cook the meats yourself at the table. My dad said he's walked past here many times and he wishes he had come in sooner. My parents were both very pleased to have discovered a fun new place. We've eaten at the Yangtze restaurant across the street dozens of times. But my parents now can't wait to come back here. They said they have a friend coming to town next month and we should take him here. As we walked past Yangtze to the car, I joked that the Yangtze staff was looking out the window, going hey, why aren't they in here?! But don't worry, we have lots of food love to spread around. read more

Staff is always so nice and the food is always so good! Also so nice and convenient that they sell the Atomy skincare line! This quickly was a favorite spot for my boyfriend and I and we love to bring our friends here. We mainly order off of the regular menu but have tried the all you can eat bbq; ayce bbq is good, I prefer the regular menu and my boyfriend says either is great! I've been to Koreana many times before but it had been well over a year since I was there last time. My friend Lesia and I decided to meet up at Koreana on a Friday evening for dinner. I had made reservations that same day for 6h30pm. All the tables were busy except for our reserved one when we arrived, so I would advise calling earlier in the day if you plan on having dinner there on a Friday night. I remember it always being busy on weekend evenings when I had been previously as well. For dinner you have a choice to pick from the menu or go Korean BBQ AYCE. For this time around we decided to take from the menu, though I have had their BBQ before and it's a good choice if you want to stuff your face! The service was quick, our orders were taken promptly and our water glasses refilled often. I order Mandu soup as an appetizer, it was a small bowl of broth with 2 large dumplings, nothing special but I had a craving for a soup and never had it before so wanted to try it. It was not bad, though I probably wouldn't order it again. (The pancakes are way better for appetizers!) I had the Kimchi Bokkeum Bap (fried rice) with egg on top. The balance of spice with the fried rice, egg and pork was delicious! I had made kimchi fried rice at home before but never had it in a Korean restaurant. I was pleased! The prices are reasonable and even though it was busy the service was good. I was happy with our dinner. The ambiance at Koreana also feels more trendy then other Korean restaurants, so I will likely be returning here rather than other Korean restaurants in the city. read more

When I heard about this restaurant from my friends, I was pretty excited when they mentioned there was barbecue involved. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the small amount of selection available from the all you can eat menu. The food is very delicious fortunately to make up for the lack of selections. The beef dumplings very tasteful with the soy sauce. The Korean pancakes were done very well with a lot of flavour in each bite. The A la cart menu is fine but they truly should not call themselves an AYCE place when their menu literally has 5 items on it. I would not recommend this place for Korean BBQ. If you have been to the places in Montreal and Toronto. You know what a real Korean BBQ place should look like. This was a complete disappointment. Even the dinner menu was super small. Maybe 4 extra items. For the price it's just not worth it. I like variety. We actually got up and left. I should have snapped a picture of that menu. I totally forgot to. But I won't be going back. I am writing this review after my first meal at Koreana -- and the food I had was very good. I would go back again sometime to try other items on their menu. I ordered the sliced BBQ pork that came on a hot-plate with a side of rice and all the typical Korean appetizers; my wife had the Bulgogi from the lunch menu. Both dishes arrived very quickly at our table and the server was attentive and polite. I have been here before with a big group but did not yelp it. Returned with my son and his GF who had not eaten much Korean food before. I guess because they were new to the cuisine, I was hoping for a sublime experience. Koreana is just okay. Even though the restaurant was not full during dinner hour, the service was slow. Seemed to be Dad behind the sushi bar and two kids and mom doing the service. The younger servers were friendly and really moved fast but Mom seemed to lack either language or social skills to have any kind of exchange with customers. Mostly, she seemed disapproving of our choices and confused by our requests. We did the 'cook at table' bulgogi beef and another platter of seafood. Both were very good - not super - but large portions, fresh and well prepared. The real surprise was actually the salmon. Very tasty on the grill. The appetizers were good: dumplings were crispy but not greasy; sushi was fresh and nicely seasoned; seafood pancake was nice, but not as superlative as some I've had. Six dishes of banshan. Looking over this review, I guess the food was pretty good. The kids were impressed, but I was hoping for a wow factor -- something a little extra: a free miso soup or little appetizer; or even refills of water, rice or banshan without repeated requests. With the indifferent and sometimes surly service, it will be difficult to muster the enthusiasm to go back to Koreana when Ottawa has a number of equally good or better Korean restaurants. read more

I love this place and only come for the all you can eat Korean BBQ. My favorite meat is the beef. The sides are great and included in the all you can eat are california rolls, miso soup, Korean pancakes, and chop chai noodles. The only downfall sometimes is when it is extremely busy, and if you're seated upstairs, the service can be lacking. If you can try and be seated on the main level which seems to be where you get quicker service. Unfortunately there's no free parking so you're on your own. There are paid lots in close proximity however if you're like me and don't want to pay, try finding a near by side street for free parking. Parking is also free at meters after 7pm. Having said that I take no responsibility if I'm wrong on the time :) For those familiar with Korea Gardens on Rideau Street, it is the same owners who had sold Korea Gardens and opened up this restaurant right in Chinatown. For those who have no interest in all you can eat, they do have bento boxes and other traditional Korean dishes on their menu. A must try! read more

Very interesting concept!! We ordered from the all you can eat menu and were pleasantly surprise with the concept of ringing a bell on the wall for service and frying our own meat at the table. The first problem came from the poor selection of sides to go with our meat. There was no vegetables sides available... The second problem came from the pan used at the table to do the frying. After a couple of orders the meat starts to taste burnt because of the buildup at the bottom. It's a real shame because the meat was the highlight of our experience. The food is now quite bland, the place itself is kind of dirty and the service quite inefficient. I like how the sushi tasted though it breaks up (the rice fell apart) when we lifted them. Ambience is okay. A Korean song was playing on the background. Fit for dates: family, friends, couples. Downside: My mom wasn't done eting yet the server got the plates where there were still food in it without asking if he should take it off from our table. The decor is left wanting. The food.. as a table we got ayce and ordered everything on the menu as there are only nine items to order. I was willing to look past the lack of choices if the food was delicious, but unfortunately this was not the case. The meats were marinated but bland, the bibimpap honestly was rice, lettuce and an egg no sauce what so ever. As well as the side dishes are lacklustre, and the Korean pancake filled with little ingredients and chewy with no sauce. Bang for your buck? For 25 dollars pp I would say not. The missus had a craving for Korean food and as this place was recommended by a colleague, we decided to check it out. Arriving at just before 6pm on a Friday night, the place was pretty quiet though by 6:30, tables were starting to fill up so I think depending on the night, reservations may be recommended. (By the time left around 7:30pm, people coming in had about a 5 minute wait). They do have a second floor so the restaurant can hold quite a few people. FOOD - AVERAGE While they have a full menu, we decided to try out the all-you-can-eat dinner menu which has maybe 10 items or so on it. I will say they are very fast (everything pre-made ready to serve?) as our server came back almost immediately with the hot plate and meats. Everything else we ordered came out very fast as well. On the plus side, the marinated pork was very good and we preferred it over the Bulgogi beef and the marinated chicken. All the meats cook relatively quickly on their hot plate so you don't have to wait long before digging in. The salmon sushi wasn't anything special and in fact they left some of the skin on the salmon which is a bit of a no-no. The California rolls also weren't anything special. The same can be said for pretty much everything else we tried, the dumplings, the Korean pancakes, the Korean side-dishes and even the Bibimap. Everything was just a bit bland which was a surprise as the other Korean restaurants we've been to had more flavour and spice. SERVICE - GOOD Service was good as everything was brought quickly though near the end it was taking a while to get some attention when we wanted to settle up. On that note, it seems you have to pay at the counter once you get your bill (or our server was getting really bad as we waited quite a while before just getting up to pay on our own). --- All in all, as we didn't find anything special about what we had, I don't think we'd go back. But if you are hungry and want something a little different without it being too exotic, it would still be a place to try at least once. read more

Ate dinner here with a group. Good food at ok prices. Service was very slow. We waited 10 minutes at the entrance to only be brought upstairs where there were plenty of open tables. The waiter didn't even give us menus, and we had to ask a few minutes later for them. We didn't even get water. Once we finished deciding, we waited patiently for the waiter to take our orders. We waited 15 minutes, and we eventually had to call for him. He was indifferent of how long we waited and rude. The food kind of made up for it, but I wished the lighting was brighter, so we could see. The meat was well marinated and tasted great, but I felt that the portions were small for the prices ($17 for 1 person). The kimchi was meh. The pancake was ok, but had more dough than seafood. Honestly, I tried this place with my brother and parents last night and it was awesome. The menu although small is great. We tried almost everything and we all enjoyed it all. We chose the beef and pork and opted out of the chicken and the beef was sweet and the pork was salty and it was perfect. I love being able to cook at the table in front of you. Food is delicious. I've come here a number of times over the years now. I think the older man is starting to slow down a little but still the food is fantastic. Usually get the kimchi jigae, squid dish, seafood pancake and bulgogi with some spicy tuna and spicy salmon hand roll. The spiciness is a perfect amount because you don't lose the flavour of the fish to it. It is perfectly marinated. The seafood pancake is amazing, they don't cheap out on the seafood for it. I liked the food :) super tasty, the side dishes were super authentic (as far as I can tell) and you get a lot of food for cheap :) I went for the tofu pot and the bf got pork bone soup. Both were delicious and portions were large! It didn't contain too much msg but there were definitely some in there. One criticism is that the ventilation was severely lacking. The restaurant looks like it was an old house, there were no fume hoods, windows were closed because it's winter, so the kbq fumes made me cough and made us smell like kbbq even after we got home. Late, after a yoga class I decided to pop in here with a major craving for kimchi. We shared the Bokkeum Bap (fried rice with kimchi and pork) and the Kkan Poong Gee (deep fried chicken and spicy tangy sauce). While we waited the server brought us complimentary Korean pancake. It was delicious and I considered ordering more, but decided to wait to see how much food would arrive. I was thankful I had that foresight. Before the two main orders came, we were presented with all of the pickles. Forgive me for not knowing the names... There was kimchi (spicy, pickled cabbage), bean sprouts with sesame sauce, something that tasted like potatoes soaked in syrup, Korean style seaweed, shredded pickled daikon and carrot. The kimchi, bean sprouts, and daikon were my favorites. The main dishes arrived simultaneously. The fried rice (with kimchi and pork) also had a fried egg on top of it. The dish was mouth-wateringly good. There was a great balance of sweet, salty, spicy with burst of acidity from the kimchi and various pickles. Total heaven. There could have been a little more pork in the rice. The spicy tangy deep fried chicken was also good. A nice compliment. It tasted like popcorn chicken and the sauce was not too sweet. The food was amazing and we definitely did not need that pancake. My only complaint about the place would be the flooring. There was carpeting in the dining room which, as a general rule, I think is unsanitary. The staff was mostly young and very friendly. The service was quick and the food was wicked. Came here for dinner. We were craving Asian and knew somerset street was Chinatown. We chose this place given the location to accessible parking and a short walking distance. As well we noticed the restaurant was full. We went in and the staff immediately greeted us and suggested we seat upstairs. We went to the upstairs and noticed the space was a bit busy and disconnected to the restaurant so we went back downstairs and say at the sushi bar. We sat down and a waiter came by with menus. We ordered bimlobop and pork Katsu. Both dishes were average but a good portion size. The staff were friendly and was really busy with the full restaurant. Went there to eat with a friend last Saturday around 2 pm. Surprisingly there were quite a few customers around this time. Most people ordered the BBQ but since I wasn't really hungry, I ordered a bowl of Soon tofu jigae (Soft tofu stew). The waiter gave us some Korean pancake sampler for free. It was a nice gesture. My meal came with the usual Korean side dishes. I wasn't too impressed with the side dishes. The kimchi was too bland. The other side dishes were just so-so. However, my tofu stew was awesome. The tofu was extremely silky and soft. The soup base had the right spice and taste. It was really good. Exceeded my expectation. My friend had the bibimbap stone bowl. Since this was the highest rated AYCE Korean bbq restaurant on yelp, I decided to try it last weekend. Unfortunately I was disappointed as it was unlike anything I've ever seen. Meats were overly salty, the grill used to cook them was very sketchy and old, the menu was pretty small, and there was a rather unclean environment and utensils (my plate had hot sauce on it...). Side dishes were pretty good on the plus side. Usually AYCE Korean bbq involves grilling the food on a grill that is placed in the table, and the server comes to change the grill every once in a while. All of the juices are supposed to drip through the grill lattices into something that holds them under the table. At Koreana, the "grill" was a portable stone plate that sat on top of the table, ran on butane, looked very old, cooked really unevenly, and had a hole on the side of the grill so the meat juices could flow out into a bowl.... Plus, the server brought our chicken, pork, and beef all on one plate and dumped it all into the grill at once!! All of the flavours mixed together and it was difficult to cook it properly as the grill was crammed full and cooked unevenly... so some meats cooked fast and were done whereas some meats were still raw, and they were all in the same grill mixed together! I didn't have high expectations for Korean bbq here, but Ottawa really needs to step up its game! My bf said that even Halifax has better. Would not recommend nor would I come back for kbbq. read more
