All of the staff were welcoming and helpful since it was our first time, and they made great recommendations and explained the (rather overwhelming) menu of rolls really well. We ordered a Dragon Crunchy Roll to split, I ordered an Aloha Roll, and my friend ordered the Crunchy Roll and udon. They all came out quickly & when they were ready (compared to holding them back) which I prefer, and they were all beautifully presented. The fish and flavors are so good and all of the rolls were super filling. The Dragon Crunchy roll was what you'd expect, and the Aloha Roll was so fresh and different than your standard baked roll or tempura roll. The jalapeno definitely packs some heat but if you don't like spicy food you could easily ask for no jalapeno or pick it off. I have nothing bad to say about this spot! However I was with a group of friends and acquaintances that had some financial restrictions and couldn't spend too much for dinner. I found this place on Yelp and checked out their menu and thought to give it a try. The food did not disappoint and the ambiance was nice. It wasn't the best food but it wasn't bad either. Menu: Sushi Bear offers lunch plate specials from 11 AM to 3 PM as well as various bento boxes and sushi & sashimi combos. Outside of various specials and combos, you can find appetizers, salads, rice bowls, noodles, fried rices, nigiri, and most importantly - specialty rolls (over 50+ options.) These specialty rolls got really interesting names (about 25% names with sexual innuendo like 3 Hours Nonstop, Hot Night, I Did Your Girlfriend, Taste Like My Ex-Girlfriend, Natural Viagra, etc.) If you don't know what rolls to get, then Yelp highlights are good starting points or you can always ask the staff for more inputs. So not only was all my sushi lukewarm and damp from udon broth, we also only had 1/3 of the udon broth left to actually eat It's clear that Sushi Bear places value in aesthetics and presentation as shown through the dine-in experience + it's been almost a year since takeout has become a major part of the business, I don't think I'm asking for too much for wanting my takeout to be packed appropriately. TLDR; I will go out of my way to visit, it's one of my favorite spots. Sushi Bear is one of the few places that had Otoro & Chu-Toro. Got the small sashimi plate and the tuna was tough and chewy. It was the worst thing on plate. The octopus tasted like it just finished thawing so it had that frozen watery taste. The yellowtail collarbone was soft and good, but when we got to the inner piece near the bone, it was still a bit raw. The tasted like my ex roll was decent. Not gonna lie, I set myself up for disappointment because I literally had Sugarfish the week before for Mother's Day. Like most sushi places, I always go for the chefs choice aka the omakase because I don't want choices in my life; I just want someone to feed me the goods. So I got the Sushi Bear combo at $35. Overall, it was okay. It definitely had three of my favorites: squid, snow crab, and octopus, but the other fish were nothing memorable enough to write home about. The sashimi and nigiri were definitely fresh but pretty standard in flavor. For my specialty roll, I got the Hawaiian and when they mean "spicy tuna," it actually was spicy. It wasn't eye-wateringly spicy but it definitely overpowered the delicate flavors of the tuna so I didn't really taste anything else but hot. (And all the ginger I shoved in my gullet.) Definitely, a very filling combo but okay in experience. You also get it all at once. The green tea creme brulee dessert was fun but not enough sugar carmelization on the top. Strawberries were also really tart which was nice compared to the sweetness. This wasn't a matcha dessert FYI so all sweetness with the green tea ice cream. Unfortunately, the company that made their sorbets ran out so they definitely need to update their menus. The staff was very nice about it though. Coworker took me here to convince me that even though I don't like seafood, I may like sushi as long as the texture of raw fish didn't turn me off. While I didn't exactly become an overnight seafood convert, I was pleasantly surprised by how delightfully fresh sushi was, and without the sea taste that is just not my thing. There was another I enjoyed that surprised him a little, but he told me to stay the hell away from mackerel. Though I hear if you're in Japan the mackerel is much different and not overpoweringly fishy. In terms of Sushi Bear in particular, most people hear the name "Sushi Bear" and become a bit skeptical that such a cutely named place without that high-brow japanese name would be a great place for sushi. But so far their doubts have always been washed away by the HUGE size, quality, and taste delivered every time by the masters at Sushi Bear. Be prepared for giant proportions at great prices every time. With hilarious modern and gamer culture being referenced in the roll names, "Final Fantasy Roll" or "Tastes like my Ex", it seems hard to go wrong here as long as you know what fish you like and don't like. And as someone who isn't always feeling up for fish, the other dishes here are wonderful too, like the fried rice. Be prepared for a bit of a wait usually, especially at dinner time. I've heard so many good things about this place... So I had to check it out myself. Came in for the first time on a Saturday for lunch with one other person. There was probably only about two other parties there on that weekend. We got seated right away at one of their many booths. We were given complementary cinnamon wonton chips and sake to start. Looking over their menu they had plenty of lunch specials running. That included bento boxes, combo choices, and plates. Their regular menu had lots of options and they had plenty of specials of the day posted. The pricing was pretty low compared to other sushi places. I went with their #2 Sushi Combo ($26) off their regular menu. This included a miso soup, salad, eight nigiri chef's choice and one special roll. The special roll is one choice of six rolls, including their Sunrise Rise, Bam, Bam, Candy Cane, Hawaiian, Rainbow, and Aloha Roll. I went with their Candy Cane Roll as my special roll. It included spicy tuna, cucumber and avocado inside and was topped off with salmon. It was suppose to come with a ponzu sauce but there was none. The salmon wasn't as fatty as I wished and the tuna was alright. The entire roll was whatever. For my eight piece of nigiri, my favorites were the yellowtail and seabream. The other pieces were alright. I wasn't super impressed but it wasn't bad. The person I came with had their two Blue Crab Handroll ($7), Spider Roll ($11), and Sweet Shrimp ($7) and Scallop nigiri ($5). The blue crab handroll was very good. The crab was excellent. The spider roll was also very good. The sweet shrimp came out as one piece. It was beautiful presented but there wasn't much of it and wasn't worth it. The scallop was whatever. Our total was about $80. All the food was beautifully presented and very pretty. The service was excellent. The waiters were very attentive and kept checking on us to make sure we were okay. I got the dinner bento box, which came with a miso soup, side salad, chicken, rice, cali roll, gyoza and a scoop on potato salad. Everything was delicious.
