Came here last Saturday and someone in my group got a salmon bowl. It was so fresh and glisteny and had that nice belly color that I could not resist. Got a salmon, hamachi, and unagi sushi with 2 pcs each and a poke bowl. OK yall. This is a must-go-again in my book. But I think just one or the other is a decent meal and pretty affordable honestly compared to some of the other places I have been going to. The sushi pieces were SO FAT. Sushi is supposed to be one bite. I struggled to get this all down in one bite. It was more like two bites. My new friends around me remarked more than twice about the (good) struggle I had! The poke bowl was so filling. The belly is such a good good cut. Tender and sweet. I had my reservations but lordy, I had to take the rest home and I was so full. Located inside the Mess Hall on Flight in Tustin, you would not expect anything amazing coming out of here. Their hours close at 5 pm. And they are closed on Sundays. We had stumbled across Mess Hall the previous weekend during our walk at Tustin Legacy Park and I bookmarked Sushiya as a spot to come back to. We came back the following weekend and were surprised to find the Hall packed! There was a cool vintage/thrift market happening in the parking lot so it was great to walk around and peruse and get our steps in before heading in to eat. I ordered the plain udon and salmon sashimi. Unfortunately, they were out of rice (!!) which wasn't so much a disappointment for me as it was for my husband who wanted to get the poke bowl (he ended up subbing lettuce instead). I'd give this place a 9/10. Got an order of spicy tonkatsu, salmon nigiri, and yellowtail nigiri. Tonkatsu was good but not great especially for $16+. Nothing bad about it, but unfortunately, it didn't compare any better than a $3 instant bowl, hard to justify for takeout. Egg was also cooked too long before submersion... more hard boiled than soft. Good amount of pork though and tasted good. 7/10. As for the fish, both tasted excellent. A bit pricey, but when you see the cut, it's about the same as any other restaurant. $7 for 2 pieces in an order, and they're probably 1.5-2x bigger, with more rice so the ratio is still really nice. Smell was good, taste was great, texture was perfect. I can't attest to anyone's claim of food poisoning but it's usually pretty clear when there's something wrong with the fish, either by taste or smell, neither of which flagged me. With the fish, they provided wasabi, soy sauce, and a heaping pile of ginger. The rolls were expensive like the ramen, and it was raining and cold, so I didn't opt for the rolls. If I come back to the area for another vendor in the food mall, I'd consider the nigiri again for sure. My colleagues had the udon (~10$/bowl) for plain, and enjoyed it. Two others got poke bowls and enjoyed those as well. Service 10/10, very friendly. ---------- This last part did not contribute to my Yelp rating and does not reflect the restaurant operations, but more of a 411 about the mall facility they operate out of. Be weary of parking in the gated area or garage, and park further down. The signs advertise as "90 minute free parking" and then say underneath that you can validate. We took 4 vehicles in total and mutually thought that they validate past the 90 minutes, but that's not the case. They charge $6 for an hour with an empty lot, and won't let you exit until you provide your home address, bank number, phone, email, name. It's a shame that this restaurants adjacent parking lots are operated by this type of shady practices. read more

Several vendors make up the Hall, with games to play like giant checkers, corn hole, etc. No dogs unless they're service dogs. Indoor and outdoor seating. Loud music, at least on the weekend we went. Order at the register, get a buzzer, wait for it to go off, then pick it up. If the serving size was even remotely reasonable, it would've been five stars. Given the approx $18 price tag for the sushi burrito roll as of Sept 2022, I expected more. It was gone in a few bites and a minute or two. We aren't savages, either. We looked around and the only place that would sell us food at 10:30am, as all places normally opens at 11am We decided on Sushiya and the owner accommodated us and actually took our cash payment vs their regular cashless payments. We ordered the dragon roll, ramen, tamago, & shrimp tempura. The ramen was good and tamago as well. The shrimp tempura could have been left in the fryer a little longer as it was a little moist. The dragon roll had a stench and I realized it wasn't fresh. I did return it and told the owner, I wasn't looking for a refund and left it at that. I told him to be careful, because another customer might not be so kind. The place had tons of seats and location very easy to find. The location was clean and restrooms were outside. Rolls are relatively small and I usually have to order two special rolls to feel full. The lobster rolls are actually crawfish when reading the fine print, a little misleading even though it's quite tasty. A solid choice, but nothing that really sets it above the rest. read more

The lobster baked roll was a huge letdown. The lobster topping had no flavor and didn't even taste good. Only the top was warm! Everything else was cold and made with imitation crab and bland rice. I really enjoy Sushiya in the Mess Hall. There isn't a ton to say about it. I typically get the Tonkotsu Ramen (ask for it spicy) and a sushi roll. The ramen is solid. The broth is good and it's a good filler without going to a ramen shop. The star is their sushi. It looks and tastes very fresh. Their rolls are are decent size and they have a good variety. Sometimes I get the poke bowl. It has a few varsities of fish on it and it isn't overly weighted with crazy toppings. It's pretty filling too with the perfect amount of rice. My only real issue with this spot is the cost. Like most of the spots in Mess Hall, it's very expensive. Be ready to spend about $30-$40 per person here. read more

The garlic edamame was just regular edamame and they sprinkled some garlic powder on them.... for $2 more? Shame on you. At least toss it. The sushi roll I had said CRAB as one of the ingredients. I asked the lady is it real crab and she said "Oh No, thats why the prices are so good" Prices good???? WTF??? One roll and edamame was $21. And I left half the roll, something I never do - ever is leave any sushi uneaten. FYI Sushiya.... REAL CRAB STARTS WITH A "C"..... FAKE KRAB, THAT YOU PUT ON YOU ROLLS, BUT ADVERTISE AS "CRAB" STARTS WITH A "K". This is false advertising. You should immediately change your menu's to reflect the actual KRAB, not CRAB you use. The Mess Hall has been my go to spot recently when grabbing lunch with my coworkers recently as it is close to our office. I decided to try the sushi place here this time. I ordered a crunch roll and baked salmon roll as well as a miso soup. Prices are pretty standard, and the service was pretty speedy. You order at the counter and pay and they give you a buzzer. My food was ready pretty quickly! My sushi came with ginger, wasabi and soy sauce packets. I requested some extra spicy mayo. The miso soup was nothing special, but also not bad. The crunch roll and baked salmon roll were flavorful. I have not tried their fresh fish so I cannot comment on that, but if you are looking to fulfill your sushi fix at this food court place, then this could be a good option. I would return. This place is inside the "Flight" Mess Hall. It's like a small indoor food hall across the street from a bunch of office buildings. I have met up with friends several times here and at least one of us always chooses food from this place. And it's always super good. They have vegan and vegetarian options, too, which is nice. Their ramen is really good and everything they make is per order and fresh. I would say, out of all the options the food hall has to offer here, this is one of the best places. Lunch is typically busier than dinner so I would suggest coming in for dinner. Large outdoor parking lot and parking is free. read more
