I read a couple of the reviews below and feel like I had a very different experience. Let me preface this review by saying I really tried to enjoy this place. We came in thinking we would have to wait in a line and then we would quickly get our food and be home to see the fireworks. It didn't happen. We waited in line for 10 minutes (not bad), but then our food took thirty minutes to come out. The place was not packed either. While waiting for our food, we sat at a table that was really sticky and water from the ceiling was dripping onto it so we switched tables. The second table was just as sticky. We asked someone to clean it and he used a dirty rag to clean and the stickiness remained :( Also, it was hot inside, why don't they have AC?! When the food arrived, it smelled amazing and the salsa that we gathered while waiting was a tasty complement. We ordered three different tacos: surf, carne asada and the mahi mahi. The surf taco was delicious! The juicy flaky texture of the fish accompanied by the crunchiness of the cabbage was perfect. The white cilantro sauce coupled with the spicyness of the baja (order it baja) sealed the deal. The other tacos were pretty good, but nothing special. Overall, the food took a really long time and it just simply wasn't worth the wait. I understand that it's a cheap place and I should overlook the sticky tables and drippy ceiling, but I think the food should be better if that is the case. read more

Disappointed and can't really review the food. Ordered tacos and a salad for my gf for us to eat on the beach. Used the official app from surf taco, and once it processed, only then did anything indicate it was a door dash order. It showed up timely but once the driver left I found the tacos covered in cheese, which was listed as allergen when ordering to avoid it being included. The other taco ordered was no where to be found. I called to get it corrected and the store blamed door dash and said they couldn't do anything about it and can't send new food. They offered a refund but they claimed that they couldn't process it today because that person was off. Manager was not helpful and passed the blame on door dash, which ignored the cheese issue. They didn't offer to make it right and I might get my money back but that doesn't get the food I wasted time waiting on. Would not order again from a place that blames a third party for internal failures and makes excuses instead of corrections. Also if doing delivery don't expect any utensils or napkins as they apparently do not provide these according to the manager. Not the surf taco it use to be. read more

Me and the girls went last Thursday when the weather freakishly went back up to 88 degrees from a 72 norm and stopped by after a stint at Belmar. Combined we all tried the Chicken, Cod, Blackened Salmon & Shrimp Tacos. The Shrimp Taco was a huge favorite. The Cod lacked flavor. The blackened Salmon was repeatable. The Chicken disappointing. Surf Taco is one of the coolest chains I've ever come across. Everything from the name, to the decor, to the atmosphere, to the food is too notch! From what I understand this place is a homegrown Jersey Shore institution started by a local surfer who decided to marry seafood with tacos and Mexican food. The concept works and its a real amazing treat! The choices here are phenomenal and there is plenty to choose from. You have everything from shrimp tacos, to tuna, to other types of seafood including interesting choices such as surf & turf tacos (steak and shrimp). If you're undecided and want to try something, try one of the numbered combos since its more bang for your buck and comes with a drink. You can choose a fountain drink or you can grab a bottled drink from the fridge, which is great for people like me, since I'm not a huge fan of fountain drinks. The cool thing about this place is its atmosphere, it's friendly staff and the whole surf theme. There's surf inspired stuff throughout and the TVs play loops of all sorts of surfers doing their thing on the waves. All of the chains as far as I know are located in Jersey shore towns all within mere steps from the beach, which extend that whole shore, surf beach theme and feeling these places go for. I believe they sell merchandise too, so why not grab a tee on the way out? Would I recommend it? YES! Went to Surf Taco with my family after the beach this week. It was great. The tacos were great - I loved the surf taco. The burritos were very good. Prices were great as well. Best of all, they had chicken strips for my youngest! Atmosphere is fun and casual. The wait for our food was a little long, but the games of Connect 4 that were available helped kill the time. I've been visiting Surf Taco restaurants for about five years now - it has essentially become a ritual to stop by after each beach sesh. My local & most frequented location is in Belmar...its BYOB and filled with friendly people. I've tried a good majority of the menu, the favorites for me include chicken tender tacos, garlic shrimp tacos, various burritos, waffle cheese fries, and the tsunami. The salsa bar is usually full and if its not the staff takes care of it asap...like I said very friendly! Must say that over the years the portion size of the beef tacos has decreased and the fish tacos are a bit over fried at times - but still delicious. Take advantage of the combo meals when you eat here...for $10 you can get a filling meal, especially if you go with the rice & bean platters! Better than I had expected. Although there was a long line during 4th of July weekend, the service was fast and efficient. I had carne asada taco and salmon taco. Carne asada was topped with fresh avocados, which I enjoyed but the salmon was sub-par. They do have a salsa/sauce bar with a variety of levels and tastes. It's a quick bite after a long day at the beach. I only wish they would have executed the specials better with more OOMPH as both tacos I ordered were on the specials of the day. read more

The original Surf Taco was on point. Maybe a few hairs of cabbage too fluffed, but otherwise tasty. I dig the help-yourself bowls of salsa. I also had The Mahi Taco, which should be renamed Pineapple Explosion. Seriously a dab will do it. No one needs that much pineapple on anything. Also it was weird that there were 2 flat screens and a jumbo projection screen with no live television... they have some kind of closed circuit channel that just rotates between waitress/staff profiles and menu items. It's a little weird. The profiles are a live clip of the staff with text overlay naming their stats. Kind of like a playmate of the month. I will say this-- the wall art is freakin awesome. It's been awhile since I've been here, probably 2 years, however I remember it well enough to say that it wasnt a terrible place. When I went I ordered the Mahi Tacho and it wasnt that bad; the flavors were alright and the chips weren't too bad either, I think what made it a better meal was the salsa bar. There was definitely a nice selection that complimented the chips as well as the taco well. The Taco shell was pretty dry though and without flavor of any kind so thank goodness the vittles inside made up for that as well as the extra lime I ordered. The Guacamole was pretty good from what I can remember though. so there was some highs and lows overall. I cant say that I would rave about this place, but it's a review based on one visit and it could have been an off day as those can and do happen. I would go back and hope that next time, things would improve just a bit. I can say that its better than going to any fast food joint by far! read more

Talking about Surf Taco is the only time I'll say that South Jersey has something better than North Jersey. It's that good. They're ZAGAT RATED! Without going to California, I don't think you can find another place like Surf Taco. Forget Baja Fresh and Taco Smell. This place is the REAL DEAL! Answer this riddle. Can a place be bad that has a salsa bar? Last time I checked, you'd have to be missing your taste buds if you said yes. I always get their burritos which are very good. My girlfriend loves the fish tacos. Overall, not a bad place to chill at with some friends and have a good laugh. Be sure to snag some stickers to slap over the signs around town. P.S. Surf taco was a great place to stop for a quick sit down meal. I always order the buffalo soldier, which is phenomenal. I like how they give you a selection of salsas to choose from for both your meal and the side chips they give you. I have always experienced good service at Surf Taco as its usually a younger staff from the beach area, willing to work for a tip (which is not necessary). I love the TV's they have around the place which always has surf films going. It gets me pumped up to get back for the surf. read more

Get the Hawaiian salad, add avocado, and call it a day. I normally skip right over the salad section on menus, but after seeing a friend order this one I had to try it. Yes, it looked THAT good. Ask for the dressing on the side, or forgo it all together.. there is enough going on in the salad that it's not really needed. Coming here after spending the day on the beach has become my routine. Mmmm ate here (for the first time) after the beach yesterday! I had always heard of people going here and finally made my way over. I had a "surf taco" baja style and a "mango coconut shrimp taco"...both were absolutely delicious and overloaded with ingredients. Each came with chips and it was more than enough for me to eat. I love visiting my friend in Belmar because it means Surf Taco! Normally we just stop by for lunch or dinner, but last weekend we placed a gigantic take out for 12 hungry friends. Phone ordering took a while (I don't blame them - 12 orders is crazy), but 15 minutes later we arrived, double checked our order and were out the door. I really appreciate the giant handle bags and that every takeout box was labeled, making at-home distribution extremely easy. Combo #2 with garlic shrimp and salmon tacos seemed to be the fave. My Combo #4 made for both an early dinner and a late night snack (seriously, the Maverick Burrito is enormous). Love the surf taco - crispy fish tacos are delicious. This was a fun place. I was a bit disappointed (at first) based on how it ranked relative to the recommendation offered by my friend's cousin, but it ended up being just perfect. Surf Taco ia very informal fast-food Mexican place. You order in line and then take a number and retrieve your food when called. It had been a long day, so I was more in the mood for a sit-down order-taken-at-my-table sort of place. I came down on a weekday (workday) from North Jersey. Still, this turned out to be just great. There were lots of yummy menu options, but that wasn't the highlight. They had a salsa bar where you could serve up your own salsa. YUM! There were were several salso options, ranging from fiery to mild. I prefer the fire! Okay, I LOVE the fire and there was some nice heat! The menu options were also yummy and served fresh. The food was good, place was clean, person who brought our lunch to the table was nice BUT the girl behind the counter was so nasty. She was cutting me off when I was ordering, reached for my credit card before I was done talking, threw her pen towards me at the counter after running it through AND actually rolled her eyes when picking up the signed receipt. Poor demeanor. Very flat affect - totally inappropriate for someone who is the first person customers interact with in a restaurant. I am super picky about fish tacos. I like them spicy, but not too spicy. I like them saucy, but not falling all over me. I like them to taste fishy, but not like chicken of the sea. I like my tacos in general to be casual, but I want them to taste good. The Surf Taco Surf Taco meets all my requirements, and if you slap some Baja salsa on there it is in fact perfect. I'm beginning to get hungrier and hungrier as I even talk about it. While the restaurants aren't super classy, they're clean, the kids working the counter were nice, the food comes out in reasonable time, and the tacos are great. I love this place. The food is pretty good, but I think I love it mostly because it just screams summer to me. Is it authentic Mexican? I dunno. I think they tout themselves being more Baja than Mexican. It's a shore staple. Hating on Surf Taco is like hating on Kohr Bros, the ski lift thingie on the Seaside boardwalk or the sloptarts that leave Karma. You just don't...... I also always get a salad. I ordered the baja taco- the only reason why is didn't give 5 stars was because the fish wasn't very warm and not very flavorful. Service was good, and food arrived quickly. I don't think Surf Taco claims to be authentic Mexican. Hell, I don't know if they claim to be Mexican at all. The concept of the burrito and the taco are largely open to interpretation, and Surf Taco does their own thing. I think it is unfair to judge them based on criteria to which I don't believe they've ever tried to adhere. But they are good at stuffing things inside tortillas and making them taste good (perhaps selectively). With that said, consistency is not their strong suit at this location (the only one I frequent), and I do believe that how good it is largely depends on who is making it on a particular day. The chicken taquitos are a consistent favorite of mine, though. Even though they're deep fried, they never strike me as greasy or heavy. The chicken always tastes really bright and fresh. I have enjoyed the chicken enchiladas on the few occasions I have gotten them. The rice and beans repulse me. I have given them a couple of shots, but every time they taste soapy. So gross. I steer clear. But Jesus Christ, I would eat a Buffalo Solider burrito every day of my life if I wouldn't die from it. Definite last supper status. I don't know how they manage to put so many components inside without losing the flavors of each one. The chicken stays crisp; the tortilla doesn't get soggy with bleu cheese. The lettuce stays fresh and the buffalo sauce they use is absolutely mind-bogglingly good. Spicy, yes, but with a big punch of puckery flavor. I live in Piscataway, about an hour away, and am simultaneously thankful and miserable that I don't have everyday access to this glorious burrito. I have had other buffalo chicken burritos, and nothing else hits the spot the way Surf Taco's does. But again - it depends on who is making it. I need to find out who is skimping on the buffalo sauce and have a word with him/her. If you come in expecting authentic Mexican, you are coming in to be disappointed. But if you're looking for some yummy, cheap, hand-held grub, Surf Taco is awesome. read more

I originally wanted the jerk chicken burrito, but I guess things got mixed up and I ended up with a Surf Burrito. Hmmm. The texture on the fish was soft. Too soft. Mushy in fact. I thought i was eating rice. Apparently not. It was the fish. Taste? Eh. I tasted a lot of the cabbage and nothing else. There weren't any taste on the fish, beans, or anything. 3 stars? Yeah. Surf Taco is one of my favorite "Go-To" spots for ordering out. The menu is extensive and has a lot of options for everyone in the group. Most meals come with chips and their salsa bar, which I find to be better than Fins, Baja Fresh, Chipotle, and Moe's. Also the Belmar location is large and has one of those NASA Coke machines with 100 flavors, so your good to go beverage wise. Surf Taco is a go to lunch spot every time I head to Belmar Beach. I've been to this location 3-4 times. The line to order can sometimes be crazy long but the wait for food isn't too bad. I recommend getting the surf taco combo which comes with 2 tacos, rice, beans, chips & a fountain drink. Sometimes the chips can be a bit stale & the rice & beans could use a bit more flavor, but this is overall a great spot to grab food after laying out in the sun all day! read more

We're not in the area much but when are, we have to make a stop at Surf Taco for a light meal that just hits the spot on a beach day. I was in there yesterday and ordered they're specials, the mango shrimp taco and the buffalo calamari. The mango shrimp was good: large chunks of mango and avocado with fried coconut shrimp. It wasn't drenched in sauce to the point when it falls apart, but you still get flavor in every bit. The buffalo calamari was delicious and I'm now tempted to try this at home. The buffalo sauce tasted like frank's red hot and the calamari wasn't breaded which is always a great surprise. We were surprise to find crumbled blue cheese on top of the calamari but it worked well with the buffalo sauce. On a side note, it's a pretty pricey taco - $5+ for 1 taco and chips but it's worth the treat every once in a while. And again perfect when you want a light meal. read more

Food was close to inedible...nachos soggy and lacking any flavor. Chicken Quesadilla had so much low quality greasy cheese they were on par with something id get at the the airport, my 7 year old can make a better one and found these "gross". Chicken Fajitas were the only reason they get 1 star, but how tough is it to mess up fajitas. And how about those tacos...the namesake...out of 3 (carne asada/shrimp/Hawaiian) the shrimp was the only one that got finished. The Hawaiian had so much mayo mixed with bbq I had to dissect and only eat the fish, the carne asada was bland and chewy with a burnt soft shell. This is the first review, after 3 trips-where the food (quality and taste) seems to get worse with every order. Lastly, ordered on the app, user friendly...when i chose 630pm as a delivery time it said it was too close to the order time (about an hour) so changed to asap w/spec instructions to "back of residence". Not only did the food come in about 30 mins early...but the just left it on the front porch with zero contact, no knock, call or text) after sitting there for at least 20 mins we realized it was just left on the front porch to get soggy and cold. How this place has multiple locations and decent reviews is incomprehensible. Will never order again. Be warned. There are much better options in the area. read more

This place is an absolute joke. Tacos are average. Chicken tastes like shredded cardboard. Beef is the lowest grade possible. Steak is burnt to a crisp. All tacos come with a small portion of chips which is unavailable to be removed. Buy Chips and cheese and you will be absolutely appalled. Your better off unloading the lbs of cheese off your tacos and throwing them in the microwave/toaster oven... It's what surf taco does. I went to Surf Taco maybe two weeks ago with my friends for her birthday. This was our first time actually trying it, but we had heard so many good reviews. The staff and employees were very nice and friendly. On the day we went, there was some sort of contest, so we participated and won a shirt. The experience and vibe was very nice, sadly I cannot say the same about the food. I ordered the two tacos, rice & beans and chips combo. I picked the Mahi and Surf Taco, ordered them both with the spicy sauce, forgot what its called. My friends ordered the chicken burrito with chips. The 'spicy' salsa at the salsa bar was not spicy, the 'spicy' sauce on the tacos was not spicy either. The 'rice and beans' was almost a joke. I was excited and anxious to taste them but was quickly let down when i seen that it looked like boiled instant white rice and canned goya black beans with no seasoning or just salt & pepper but still gave it a try, i was correct. The salsa was very good and the guacamole had the most seasoning out of everything my friends and I ate. Would not recommend or go again, would sell my soul to satan for a single dorito before i returned. read more
