LAKE COMO: we were driving through the streets of town and stumbled upon Joe's Surf Shack and we are so happy we did! Joe's has a dog friendly outdoor area with a very beachy vibe, a great food menu, and a full bar! The menu is full of a variety of options at reasonable prices from soft pretzels and edamame potstickers to tacos, wraps, and sandwiches, their famous fried rice, and so much more. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options are clearly labeled. They also have Happy Hour and a Late-Night menu. The outdoor dining is open weather-permitting, and they try to keep the tables out throughout the year as long as the weather is nice. There are sail shades and umbrellas at each table with TVs at the outdoor bar to watch the game. The staff is the best and so friendly and offered Brie a bowl of water. The owners also run Cross & Orange / Asbury Park, another awesome dog friendly spot. read more

Great drink specials, and the two bartenders I interacted with were both very good. Nice outdoor patio seating, which was great for happy hour, at least until the local drunks spoiled it by sitting down upwind of me while smoking and vaping. I asked them to move, and they kinda did... But thirty minutes later they were back out for another cigarette and blowing smoke in my face again, at which point I left. These people are costing you money: please designate a smoking area away from the tables where people are trying to enjoy their food and drinks. Also, stale chips for the $10 chips with guac/salsa is not a good look. read more

My friend and I had a beach day in Belmar and this spot looked like one of the better places to eat at in the area based on the menu options. We sat outside on one of the benches since the weather was nice and the inside smelled like your typical dive bar. We were excited to order pina coladas but were let down as they barely had any coconut or pineapple flavor and tasted artificial/watered down, which didn't warrant the $14 price tag at all. As for food, I'm not sure why they have fried rice on the menu or how it's "famous" but it did not live up to the hype and was really salty to boot. We agreed that the grilled wings and Baja steak nachos were pretty good though. Sticking to bar food and beers seems to be the safest bet here. Overall a decent post-beach hang out spot for the area that has potential and some room for improvement. read more

My boyfriend and I hit this place up this past Sunday. We moved into Belmar in October so we've been waiting for the weather to break to check this place out properly and it did not disappoint! Live band, energizing atmosphere, beautiful melting pot of patrons, and amazing food! We devoured the mahi fish tacos and tuna fried rice. We can't wait to come back and try other items on the menu. Don't let the bar vibes fool you; the food is delicious! My husband and I ordered takeout from here last night and were pleasantly surprised at how delicious the food was. When my husband arrived to pick up our food, he said the bar was surprisingly busy for a Tuesday evening. There wasn't a hostess working, so he had to track down a bartender to get our order. However, he was in and out pretty quickly. The Ahi Tuna Burger was delicious; it came with a thick piece of ahi tuna cooked perfectly, topped with a crunchy cabbage slaw and a spicy wasabi mayo. It was accompanied by a large serving of crinkle-cut fries (enough for leftovers, always a plus). My husband tried the classic burger and also said that it was cooked well. We also tried the Baja Steak Nachos, which were decent but nothing to rave about. This dish came with way too much guacamole. I love guac, but it had way too much on top, making a lot of the chips very soggy, and it was covering a lot of the steak and other toppings. We'll keep this spot in mind the next time we want to pick up takeout in the area! read more

Joe's Surf Shack has a great variety of offerings, pleasant seating, and friendly staff. We visited on a weekday afternoon and ordered the stuffed avocado, pretzel styx, grilled Mahi Mahi tacos, and mushroom and truffle fried rice. The avocado was really interesting and tasty, not something we'd had anywhere before. The pretzel styx were surprisingly good. I was a little worried they'd taste like mall pretzel bites, but they were much better and the beer cheese served alongside was very good as well. Good consistency and flavor. My dining companion said the tacos were great and I loved the mushroom fried rice. The mushrooms had a nice crispy texture and the quantity was ample. Service was friendly. We'll go back! read more

Great place especially after spending all day in the beach and not knowing anything about the area. While driving around we found this spot and what a pleasant surprise. The food was excellent, their Joe's fried rice with short ribs and Buffalo Chicken Dip was our favor. Very casual place within a residential area. 3 stars but potential for 4. My group of 5 came in on Saturday night at 9:00 to a live band and an older crowd. Then the dj started and a much younger crowd started to come in. There are a bunch of games to play like jenga, table size connect 4 and cards against humanity which was cool. My gripes were the drinks, the mixed drinks were extremely light on alcohol and when I asked for a double the guy went to grab a bigger glass to pour the same amount of alcohol in with more coke. I had to explain twice just give me a "double" on the alcohol but the same amount of coke. I just personally don't want to drink 5 cups of soda when I can have 2 decently stiff drinks and be satisfied. The space was solid, very open and spacious with a bunch of TVs for the games and also very clean. A few in my group ordered some apps from their late night menu and they were standard bar food apps, nothing crazy. I would definitely come back, I would just do things a little differently next time. read more

We decided to stop at Joe's for lunch because we couldn't decide on anything. I'm very happy we decided to because it was a fantastic lunch. Enjoyed everything about my burger and fries. Went to joes on a Wednesday night in the winter. Waited 17 minutes just to order a drink. There were 2 bartenders and 26 patrons. The slowest service I've ever seen. I understand it's the off season and it's not busy, but at least take care of the people you do have. Would not recommend. Saltys is a block away with the same atmosphere. Food was amazing!! Got the ahi tuna burrito and the fish tacos (the best of the two). My dad got the buffalo chicken wrap and it was good. Fries are perfectly seasoned and thicker cut. Beers were cold and they abide by the new CDC regulations well-- bartenders were always wearing masks and the tables were outside and more than 6 feet apart. Will definitely be back! read more

One of Belmar's hidden gems! I rented a house for 4th of July weekend that happened to be right down the road from this place and kept coming back for more. It's going for that "divey" vibe but you can tell it looks very new, updated and clean. It gets pretty crowded at night. They have a lot of live bands playing and plenty of room to bust a move! Their beer selection is fantastic and the tacos are to die for!! I tried the pork, fish and short rib tacos and would absolutely recommend any of them. I did not try the nachos but the person next to me had them and they smelled incredible. I will be coming back next time I find myself in Belmar. read more

My first time was a few months back & at the time I gave them 1 star, not because the food was not great ( its awesome ) but because their janitorial service recommended the wrong cleaning agent that left an unpleasant after smell. One star for ambiance. Bartender couldn't remember our drink order and we never saw him again after food was delivered. Had to go and ask for the check. Fried rice was mushy lacking in flavor and texture. It felt like they tossed mushy rice and added old meat to it- no seasoning. Korean wings were ok. Unfortunately the highlight was the French fries on the chicken tenders platter. The chicken tender were over fried. General lack of care in food and service. Our friends, that are locals, and eat there often recommended the place. We post gamed for a friends 21st last week, the bouncer was super nice and the crowd was pretty small, overall a pretty nice atmosphere! The menu looked great for a late night meal. We should've got the burger but we went for that wings. It sucked bc the Wings were super burnt like charcoal so we lost like 3 wings bc of that, alittle annoying to pay $12 for 7 wings but 4 edible ones. 4 stars are for the somewhat dr*nk bartender for forgetting to charge us for the white claws we got.
