When I walked into this restaurant, I KNEW I was in for a good meal. It was crowded and I had to wiggle my way through to get around to the ordering counter. There was a constant influx of people dining in or ordering takeout. The dining area is small so I recommend coming during off hours if you want a table inside. The menu is limited (8 choices), but that usually means the food is fresher and the chefs carefully curate every meal. I ordered the birria tacos with cheese ($16) and a strawberry horchata ($7). It took a little over half an hour to get my food, but the wait was soo worth it. I snagged a table outdoors and dove right in. *Strawberry Horchata- I've always loved horchata (rice milk drink) but I've never had it with strawberry. This drink took my love to the next level! It was refreshing, creamy, and sweet. For starters, the consomé is spot-on. It's rich and flavorful without being overly oily or salty, which lets the depth of the spices really come through. There's a nice complexity to it that shows real care went into the broth. They make everything fresh and each taco (double wrapped) is generously stuffed to the max. It is substantial. Thank goodness for all those napkins on the table. Trust me, you will need them. The beef is exceptionally juicy! They also have drinks. We ordered a Horchata to share and it is the perfect accompaniment to the tacos. I have had Horchata before and did not care for them which is why Hubby and I wound up sharing it. After my first sip, I realized how incredible it was. The decor was very casual and the staff was very friendly. The clientele are obviously repeat customers as I heard many of them not even needing to look at the menu as they ordered. Each dish is about $15 - $16 and for what you are getting, most likely, you will have to ask for a container to carry some of it home. Somehow I've been visiting Mexican restaurants the most frequently on my own accord, but I suppose that's because they're convenient, relatively inexpensive, and the quality of food can be quite high. Naturally I've developed a taste for Birria, which is all the rage right now. I can make this review simple: this is the best Birria I've had yet, which is reassuring for a place that specializes in Birria--besides the non-alcoholic drink menu it makes up the entirety of the menu. Let me say that I was floored by the watermelon juice / Sandia Playera I ordered: it was delightfully sweet and natural, perfect for summer as it's all blended watermelon topped with fresh watermelon on top that's coated in a fruit sauce as well as the Tajin on the rim. I wanted to try multiple styles so I ordered the Mixta, which is essentially three different Birria items: a Mulita with consommé which in my eyes is a significantly better version of a Cheesy Gordita Crunch, a fried taco, as well as a fried quesadilla. This was yet another meal that brought a smile to my face, and I didn't hold back in my enjoyment of the Birria: squeezing a lime on each after taking a bite out of it, then adding the Birria broth with a spoon, and also adding a taste of the side red sauce which added a slight sweet element to an exceedingly rich meal. I loved them all, and was particularly fond of the quesabirria. Being seated outside was pleasant, with the entranceway looking inviting. Birrerias are apparently quite common in Mexico, so the amount of specialties served here shouldn't be surprising. The friendly staff recommended the Birria noodles which do look like they could be tasty, and explained a lot of the menu. Do keep in mind that this isn't the sort of place to come for any specialties beyond Birria, as there are no tortilla chips available and the only dessert option is flan. Finally!! A Birria Recipe I can get behind and say. "Yes, this is it!! I want I crave I NEED this at least, once a week!! preferably at home, in all its cheesy, brothy-flavorful, goodness". So - as of the writing of this review- we have enjoyed Los Barbaros 15 times- as a family or as just orders for lunch here and there. Tacos have been the go to, but because I love the noodles, I order the noodles Birria most times, as my own "a la cart", and if anything you need to try them at least once. I, personally like the quesabirrias, I literally pick my tacos into bite size pieces and dunk them into the broth, so it made sense to order the quesabirrias. Plus any left over tortilla, broth, meat, cheese etc, goes into the broth for the next days lunch, which is why I order the noodles, add all of it together and enjoy my heavenly lunch the next day. Trust me, your gonna love it. I have not ordered any of the drinks, since all my orders have been "To-Go" and Jarritos is already a staple in our house fridge and I make our own agua frescas, which isn't to say I won't try them if I order to eat there, I just haven't eaten in yet.
