This isn't a nice sit down spot; the interior is nothing fancy. However the tacos are solid! Whenever I order tacos here I get them to-go and have never had any issues. When we picked up takeout the other night they mislabeled a few of our tacos but thankfully the order was correct. My go-to the order is the Baja mahi taco and the garlic shrimp taco. It's one taco per order but they're very filling! They give you a ton of chips with your order, so definitely not necessary to order extra, unless you want the almost famous salsa bar (which I will say is worth it...their salsa verde in particular is so good). read more

What a disappointment! I had expected so much flavor and love from Surf Taco but it was just not it! First off, the girl who took our order looked like she hated her life. I stared right into her eyes as I walked in and greeted her with a smile and said hi. She just looked at me as if there was a fly on my forehead. I awkwardly stood there to read the menu and ended getting the mahi taco and the garlic shrimp taco all for a combo. Combo comes with nachos, beans and rice. I would skip this as the beans and rice were bland. They didn't add any seasoning but honestly it's kind of hard to mess rice and beans up. The chips were ok but you'd need queso cheese to compliment it which is extra. The mahi taco lacked so much flavor and the fried fish was cold. I was so disappointed but still ate since the food here wasn't exactly cheap either. Fortunately, the grilled shrimp was the come back for flavor here and saved the day. Maybe just don't order the fish from here? The chef was in an F it mood tonight? Who knows but lord knows I won't be making the same mistake twice. The salsa bar there was intriguing but the flavor and spice disappointed just like everything else on the menu. I don't think I would come back to surf taco. There's honestly so many family owned restaurants here that we'd rather support who puts more love into their food. read more

Got the surf burrito, which was completely flavorless. I was surprised because it was dripping with sauce and fairly messy.... you'd think that the sauce would at least have some flavor to make up for the lack of flavor of the other components, but it didn't. I kept adding salsa (both regular and spicy) to try improve it, but even those were really bland. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised.... most of the customers seem to be high school kids, who I guess are not the most discerning clientele. Street parking only. 1 outdoor table. The pro was that they had a free foosball table inside, but the con was that it was in pretty bad shape and also the handles were as sticky as f. This place is not even remotely close to a Cali style burrito. read more

One of my friends raves about this place from North Jersey. He actually drove an hour each way to cater a party. It was nice the way they gave us all our own ingredients to heat up and assemble the tacos. They were good. I thought he was crazy to drive that far but he was happy with his decision. I was in the neighborhood and thought I'd check it out firsthand. Due to COVID, they're open for pickup only. There's a menu outside for you to look at so you can call. They had a good selection of tacos, burritos and bowls. The tacos come one to order but their pretty big. If your a big guy, you're going to need two to fill you up. My wife got the beef tacos. She said it was better than Taco Bell and she wasn't as worried about getting a stomach ache. I got the mahi taco. The cabbage, avocado and pineapple went together nicely. I would recommend going to surf taco if in the area, but I don't recommend driving more than 10-15 minutes each way to get there. read more

The servers and workers really nice and thoughtful. Can't say a bad thing about them. The food on the other hand, was pretty foul. The only thing that was decent were these nachos. We got burritos, tacos, their Crunchwrap... all bland, gross, and unappetizing. This is like a worse version of tex mex. Def better spots in the shore, sorry read more

A location by the Avon beach that is a store front to the popular taco chain Surf Taco. The tacos we ordered were okay, unfortunately bland and a little watery from the dressing on the vegetables. Salsa left a lot to be desired, it tasted kind of watery and if they advise you one of them are spicy, I would assure you not, it's not. If you crave fresh tacos, I advise going to an authentic Mexican joint that makes handmade tortillas than tacos from this chain that has really floury tortillas and a watery filling. My pickup order also took a pretty long time and wasn't as cheap as I was expecting for a taco "shack." read more

Ugh so disappointed!!! Came here with my boyfriend after a beach day and was totally disappointed with my food. I use to love coming here and now I won't ever return. I ordered the taco salad and the salad use to come in a taco bowl and now it's just chips. So skimpy! Chicken is extremely chewy and huge chunks. Waffle fries were just ok. They aren't even waffle fries as u can see lol. Completely went down hill. Will be going somewhere else after a beach day. Three stars because the chips are good and the girl who took my order was sweet. read more

I like coming here especially after a day at the beach. It's bound to get extra busy in the summer so be mindful. They offer a lot of different options of tacos, burritos and platters. Salsa is fresh and flavorful. They also have desserts and smoothies that I have yet to try. Tacos and nachos are average but they get the job done. I dig the surfer vibes/decor and the videos they show on the TVs of people surfing, makes me feel like I'm not in Jersey. There's locations all over the state but I tend to frequent this one the most. read more

Who doesn't like surf taco? Definitely one of the places I need to stop at when I'm in town. This location has plenty of seating to accommodate the swarms of people that come in. Weekday or weekends, ST is never empty. The food moves here. For those of you who've never stepped into a surf taco, it's a very laid back environment where you walk up to a register, order, then sit at your table and wait for someone to bring you your food. Everyone who works here looks like they just turned 18. Tacos are good, burritos are awesome, and the salads are good (although they only have 2 on the menu). Haven't tried anything I didn't like here yet. My only complaint is that I wish they would be opened later! :) read more

Its ironic that a place dedicated to surfing and located right next to the water would serve up tacos that were so dry you'd think they came straight from the Gobi Desert I got an order of the Surf Taco, the Mahi Taco, and the Mango Shrimp Taco. All 3 came loaded with tortilla chips (so many that we ended up taking about half of them to go for our drive back home). Each taco came loaded with veggies and greens on top of the protein - a battered piece of cod, blackened piece of Mahi Mahi and some fried shrimp. Sadly each one was very skimpy on the salsa and sauce, leaving each taco rather dry to eat. Separately, the 4 salsas on offer were all lackluster, missing flavor depth and heat. Honestly they could be better served by throwing an Old El Paso salsa on the bar for the chips. The restaurant is decked out like a chill Cali surfer joint, and while we showed up on a rainy Sunday during Covid times, I can imagine how busy and lively this place must get read more

Please step up your game :( Belmar local who just gave you ANOTHER chance despite lost orders and neglecting to follow my request to hold the tomatoes in the past. I want to like you guys so badly but every order is so disappointing. I love fish tacos. That being said, these are not the best fish tacos I have ever had, but that's probably because I ate em every chance I had in SoCal. These are however, the best fish tacos I've had in NJ. Order at the counter, take a number, and find a seat where the staff brings you your food. Clean up is on you though. I've had the mahi mahi, salmon, surf, and shrimp tacos. My favorite is the Surf Taco, baja style, followed by the shrimp tacos. They have non-seafood tacos, but why get beef or chicken at a place called SURF taco? Their salsa bar is pretty good, and they have a Coke freestyle machine. They also have a foosball table and free stickers! read more

When i think of going down the shore, i think of beach, bars, strollos and SURF TACO!! I always have to hit this place up every time i come down the shore. I absolutely love it. I normally get the 2 taco combo- i've tried chicken, steak, salmon, surf taco, and they are all good- my faves are surf taco and steak I've also had the #4 combo with the maverick burrito with surf taco. Also delicious and filling. Buffalo calamari- GREAT! They have those cool soda machines with a thousand flavor options. Its a very casual set up- You walk in, wait on line, order, and they give you a number and they bring the food to your table. They have a salsa table set up. i love the salsa verde. I cant wait to go down the shore often this summer just to stop here every time! The only reason why i'm not giving it a 5 is b/c there is sometimes a line and you have to wait a while before they take your order. read more

Surf Taco - #4 - Wraps Near Me - Belmar, New Jersey

Unfortunately, this place lost its luster and disciplined cleanliness. Owners need to take a hard look and do a serious renovation.

It's a sad day when a place you go to regularly, a local place you bring out of town guests because it's your favorite, a place that for the last 21 years has been a family go to decides to change the menu in order to "streamline so they can franchise!" As if the past few years hasn't been hard enough, we lost our soul of restaurants. Absolutely NONE of our favorite dishes survived the cut. But ok we take a breath and refocus. Jersey Bowl was a go to, now I try the Aloha Bowl. Basically it's a pile of rice, some strands of shredded lettuce and tasteless chicken. You would think a place named Surf Taco would have taco options- again the crispy taco was cut from the menu- only soft tacos now. The manager was brave enough to walk around and ask how everything was - we were honest, we were not happy. His explanation of streamlining did not make us any happier. We have supported Surf Taco for decades, we ordered many meals during Covid to support them and we are devastated. Today's meal was boring and bland, we don't need another chipotle. Farewell Surf Taco - the duchess is signing out! read more

I have lived in jersey for 25 years and finally got to the famous Surf Taco. All you see when driving on the parkway is these bumper stickers on cars. Everyone always talking about the great surf taco, and how they are the best. I don't think they are the best tacos in the world, but they were definitely worth the drive. The mahi tacos where dried out, but the shrimp teriyaki and fried cod were awesome. The fish is very fresh along with all of the ingredients used in the tacos, and when I asked for no cilantro, they actually listened. The whole place has that laid back surfer/shore feel too it, and I felt like I was on vacation, and not in NJ. They have couches to relax in and even a foosball table. Good food, fun vibe, I will be back. read more

Although I'm a regular at Surf Taco, this is the first time I actually went to their Belmar location. All of their locations are in Jersey Shore towns, although now they have expanded to Princeton and the Rutgers area, too. The food and atmosphere are on par with the other locations. What I liked about their Belmar location is that it is fairly large given that space is expensive in that shore town. When people don't like Surf Taco, I think they just don't understand the concept. It's not supposed to be authentic Mexican food. It's a concept called "coastal cuisine," which is fun California-style food that the owner brought back to the East Coast after having lived in the sunnier state for a while. I got the signature "Surf Burrito," and it was delicious. I really like the salsa bar, as always. The fast casual concept also works very well for me. You can come on your own, you can bring kids, or you can come with a girlfriend. Everyone, regardless of how much time you have, or whatever the occasion is, will enjoy eating here. It's a great alternative to fast food. I think it's much better than Panera and Chipotle, too. read more

Pretty good. Cool surfer, artsy atmosphere. I always get the mahi tacos, and it's abundant with fresh, flavorful fish. Pineapple really makes it! The surf taco tv plays surfing, body boarding, other water sport competitions which is entertaining while eating. Prices are high for what you get, but everything comes with chips and salsa bar and I usually feel satisfied after 1 burrito or 2 tacos. Baja salsa is decent with a smoky flavor. read more

Awful food! We picked tacos up (ground beef, chicken tenders) and ate them immediately outside in the car, but all the food was barely warm to totally cold! which is dangerous and could cause food poisoning! The beef taco didn't even look like ground beef-- it was gray and mushy. We threw it ALL away. Will NEVER go back here! The Health Dept should look into this place and monitor the temperatures they keep their food at before people get really sick here. read more

This is my go-to spot after a trip to the beach. The food is always fresh and really hits the spot after spending all day in the sun. I recommend their burritos since they are the pretty large in size and definitely will fill you up. The reason for the four instead of five star review is that service here is hit or miss. Since this is a really popular spot, the line can be quite long. It seems that they rarely ever have more than one cashier working at a time, and as a result the line can sometimes back up as far as out the door! Again, because it's so busy, the fountain soda machine is almost always out of ice, and tables are sticky from not being cleaned. I really think all of this could be resolved if they just properly staffed the restaurant during peak hours of the summer. It still is Surf Taco, and the food is awesome, so I will continue to go. Just beware -- don't come starving, because you may be forced to wait in line for 15-20 minutes during peak times. read more

On the first 80 degree day of 2018, that happens to be on a Saturday, what better plans would you have than to go to the beach? Getting dinner at Surf Taco and then bringing it to Beach Haus Brewery in the beach town of Belmar might be that improved plan! When we got there, we found ourselves in a long line of post beach-goers, I squinted to read the menu to be prepared when our time to order arrived. When it did 15 minutes later, I picked the Surf Taco, Mahi Taco, and the Chicken Taco; my girlfriend picked the Buffalo Chicken Burrito for a total of $25. After 57 minutes from signing the receipt, we got our food. I wasnt sure why it was taking so long as it was pretty empty there at this point. The sun and warm weather was replaced with freezing wind when we stepped outside around 8. The whole walk to the brewery, I thought that these tacos better be the best tacos in the world. Part of me was even hoping they weren't anything special after that whole wait...but they were fantastic. The Mahi Taco was my favorite. It had a zesty taste to it, along with a large avocado chunk. The chicken taco was stuffed with large chicken pieces, and the Surf Taco was unique with cod and I believe tarter sauce. All three came with chips. I was so happy with the meal that I couldn't even be bothered with getting a beer until I was finished eating. In the future, I'll call an order ahead of time and I'd say they were worth the wait if you're a taco enthusiast! read more

This place is dirty as hell. I went there with my family and we all got combo meals. We were going to fill up our cups with drinks and noticed black mold growing on the sides of the ice machine. If I could give zero stars I would. I got the shrimp burrito bowl and it was completely flavorless and watery. My friend got the maverick bowl. Also flavorless, the rice was severely undercooked and the steak was practically mooing. Her bowl was $19 and it was definitely not worth it. They forgot too add the sour cream and pico de gallo to. Key components in a burrito bowl if you ask me. The only good thing about this place was the salsa, and that was even mid. Also the tables outside by the look of it have never been cleaned. Don't come here worst surf taco ever. read more

Giving it 1 star because I had to. First time at a Surf Taco my friend and I and my kids were at the shore and she raved about it and how she visits one in Red Bank went here 50$ later the soda machine was out of soda no ice server was rude bringing our order table and seats were covered in food. Surf Taco is along the same lines as Jaws tacos on Maui, Rubio's in Califronia and Fins in Belmar, NJ. It is Mexicali with the emphasis on the Cali. Though there are long lines the lines here move quickly. Service is fast and efficient. The owners are surfers and have pictures up of all the places they have been to surf around the world. It is a little more laid back than Fins. The tacos tend to be a little soggy because they add a lot of sauce. I usually order the surf taco which is good. Their best item in my opinion is their shrimp taco. The best shrimp taco I have had. It is a little spicy with sweet Thai chili sauce. They give you a choice of salsas. Mild, verde. Baja and hot. They have table service, The employees are local students and surfers. It is a cheap quick option for the shore. Then head over to Strollo's for ice! read more

I'd like to start by saying that I feel bad for writing this but it's the truth. Included is two pictures of a buffalo chicken quesadilla I ordered. As you can see there is hardly any chicken and an absence of buffalo sauce. I love Surf Taco because it reminds me of my youth spent in Belmar. And by "youth" I mean my twenties, hungover from DJais and looking for sustenance with Bina. Bina and I would come here, order delicious tacos, chips and salsa, then pick up some beers and eat on the beach or back at the beach house . Those. Were. The. Days. The fish tacos are great but don't count out the Buffalo soldier burrito. Oh man, I love pigging out here. Prices have gone up over the years but I still consider it "cheap eats" in price only. I have been an avid surf taco fan until today. I went to pickup something for my stepson. I got the Buffalo Calamari. $9.95 plus tax and tip. $12.60 out the door. When I get it home, there is something less than 9 ozs. Of overcooked, rubbery calamari. Sauce was passable, nothing more. I called and complained. Apparently that's what your supposed to get according to the kid on the phone. No interest in making it right. I'll be speaking to the manager in the morning. Very bad experience at a place I used to love. Update. I received an email from the General Manager of this Surf Taco this morning. What Happened??? IN BELMAR I use to love this place now it's not even mediocre. Just got 2 taco combos for $24. The fish was all lettuce. The beef was mediocre Chips were stale. The beans and rice were ok and that's sad because how do you mess up canned beans and white rice and if that's what I'm paying $24 dollars for ouch! The salsa bar had 1 gallon nasty bowls that had film growing on top because no one was there. And worst of all ... the soda machine leaked on you and tasted nothing like soda. The place is quaint and feels like a bit of the "true surfer experience" but it never really hits it right on the mark. The food is bland, they offer salsa to salvage but they're never full.
